So this week I’m heading to three local dollar stores in my area: Dollar General, Family Dollar and Dollar Tree.  I’m not a huge fan of Dollar store shopping, so I thought it would be a great idea to scout out the local Dollar Stores and see what deals can be scored. Please check below this video for a few Dollar Store deals, coupon policies, and other info!

Enjoy!

**If you can’t see the video, go here to watch it.

Like every good couponer, I wanted to know the specific coupon policy for each dollar store so several days before my shopping adventure, I emailed these stores to find their coupon policies (see below for the results). If you are a frequent dollar store shopper or browser, it is probably worth joining their electronic newsletters so that you can receive the latest coupons, promotions, etc. To join the Dollar General Savings Zone, click here; to sign for Dollar Tree emails, click here; to join Family Dollar Savings program click here and then enter your email in the box in the top right corner that says “Family Savings.”

Dollar General’s Coupon Policy (taken directly from the email I received):

  • Dollar General is pleased to accept manufacturer coupons at any of our more than 8,100 stores. If you have five coupons for five products, you may use them in one transaction unless the coupon states otherwise. If the coupon states that it is good for any product, you may use the coupon for any product even if it is not pictured, unless the coupon states otherwise.
  • You may use a Dollar General coupon along with a Manufacturer’s coupon for the same item, as long as neither coupon states otherwise.
  • Unfortunately, due to fraudulent attempts, we are unable to accept internet coupons, unless they were issued directly from Dollar General.

Dollar Tree’s Coupon Policy (taken directly from the emailed I received):

  • We do not accept manufacturer coupons. (This was all the information I received…just one simple sentence, that’s it!?)

Family Dollar Coupon Policy:
Family Dollar accepts the following types of coupons:

  • Family Dollar Coupons with scan-able bar code (with valid promotion code to be used if coupon won’t scan)
  • Manufacturer Coupons with scan-able bar code (cents off; no hand written values, no photo copies)
  • No Free merchandise Coupons (Except buy one get one free or other combinations that require a purchase)
  • Manufacturers Buy-One-Get-One-Free coupons or other combinations of buy X and get Y
  • Internet Coupons (both Manufacturer & Family Dollar) with scan-able bar code only.
  • Soft drink bottle caps

Dollar Tree is a great place to get mylar balloons. I let the kids pick out a “get well” balloon to take to friends who are sick. They love doing it and it is fun to see people react to receiving a balloon from a child. (When was the last time most adults just randomly get a balloon?)

I also get greeting cards from Dollar Tree – 50cents each! Great for sympathy, anniversaries, thank yous, get wells, etc.

Another favorite is the Teacher materials at Dollar Tree – lots of great activity books, reward charts, educational posters, flash cards, etc. Great for teachers, but also great for preschool and elementary aged children. Did you know you can buy Dollar Tree giftcards? I got some for my daughter’s teachers and they loved it!

Scrapbook supplies and coloring books are also very nice at Dollar Tree. Most school supplies on my daughter’s list this fall were cheaper when on sale at Target and Walmart, but Dollar Tree had small white boards and packs of white board markers – waaaay better prices than anywhere else.

I wholeheartedly agree with your post. I LOVE their cards. Sometimes the price on the back is $4.95 and they only charge 50cents! Amazing balloons, too. Dollar Tree is really great!

  2. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Just a heads up on the Suave deoderant… Target carries Suave at $.97ea. great to combine with the $.75 q. Not sure when it expires??

  3. haidy

I have learned a lot from you today, Thanks Collin

  4. haidy

I have tried once to use a manufacturer coupon with a dollar general coupon but was not allowed. Next time I go I will take the policy with me
    Thank you

Was tickled to see this post today. I work for Dollar Tree at the corp. office in Chesapeake VA. Being a huge couponer myself, I still shop $Tree for all sorts of stuff 🙂 The balloons are a huge seller for me – you can get a whole bouquet for the price you’d pay for just one or two in a grocery store or florist. And I always buy any additional Sunday papers from them (if I need them). The teachers corner is another huge hit – I make assorted baskets for my daughters preschool which is a private business – not state funded. They can use all the help they can get!

    • Smellyann

Hey, Neighbor! I’m so glad to see another Hampton Roader here (VA Beach myself) – I never see any comments from local folks! 🙂

    • Maizie

Sunday papers at $Tree? Is this all stores or only certain ones? I’ve never seen the papers in AZ.

  6. Desire'

My mom has a Dollar General near her house and she always finds cute baby/toddler outfits for my two daughters. They are usually $5 or $7 and sets, like matching shirt, pants etc. They make great playclothes – I don’t mind them playing in the yard or painting in them.

  7. Stephanie

thanks for the tutorial. I never shop these stores, but in the mail today I got a dollar general flyer and saw All on sale for 3.00. WIth my 2.00 of coupon, 1.00 is a total stock up price!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I saw that one too but not sure if the 2.00 coupon will apply, I think the oz is like 132 oz on the coupon for this one. can anyone else verify?

  8. Jen R.

I just wanted to add that we use Dollar Tree around Christmas to fill shoeboxes for Samaritan’s Purse. We usually find a lot of items there that work, so that’s another way to use a dollar store. Thanks, Collin, for another great video!

  9. Stephanie

Dollar General is the place to go to score big for the Olay Rebate. I paid $2.78 for 3 body washes (25% off $2.50 plus Qs) and I’ll get $15 for the rebate!

  10. Lisa

What – no lemons this week ??? I am kind of disappointed !!! lol

  11. Lesley

Hope you are feeling better!! Not enough lemons with Vit C??? tee hee!

  12. Wendy

Awww, man – not underwear in the EASTER basket!!
Like getting socks at Christmas 🙂
I hope you get in the swing of Dollar Tree – I have enjoyed its’ seasonal stuff. We go thru a lot of baggies for lunches and stuff. One ‘splurge’ that I do for our house is the seasonal sandwich baggies – box of 25/$1. (Hearts, snowmen, bunnies/eggs, robots, Little Mermaid, Cars)
Others have mentioned the value of the greeting cards (what a racket, huh? $4.99 now?!!) and gift bags. I find that the 4 pack of night light bulbs is a great value.
Of course, in our house we don’t call it Dollar Tree. It is the
    BALLOON STORE!
To my son, the whole point of going there is to get a ‘good’ balloon (not latex).

  13. tiffany

There are sooooo many dollar type stores around here so we have a huge selection of items. They are the best for gift bags, tissue paper, gift wrap, candle holders, little inexpensive frames, holiday decor, ect…You’re right though, when it comes to H&B supplies, you can always find better deals on CVS and such. Oh, and some of them do have the best deals on balloons! It all comes down to already knowing your prices on items and knowing a great deal when you spot one. Thanks for the video Collin. Hope your feeling better.

  14. Regina

Hip really must have been feeling sub-par (though she didn’t look it, lucky her), because I didn’t spy a single lemon.

  15. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

We LOVE the Dollar Tree 😀

Our main buys are the cards, of course and the books! I just wish that ours sold newspapers 🙁

  16. Dwagnfly

I shop Dollar Tree for stocking stuffers, Easter baskets , birthday party favors, mylar balloons and party decorations and when I need fillers for our school PTO fundraiser raffle baskets. I have found dvds and books for a dollar which are great for our raffle baskets.

One thing that I hear people buy and think they’re getting a good deal on are the food items. But most of those you can get at the regular grocery store for a lot less or FREE) with sales and coupons.

  17. Kim Harris

It was fun for me to see this video, I service 6 local Dollar General stores in my area which is big Russellville Ky. this past week in all my stores they have 70% off lots of items. Wahoooo Our local WKU University hoodies and tee-shirts also all UK appeal. My daughter attends WKU so I was so excited to grab 20 total hoodies, tee-shirt and long sleve shirts at a super price to put back for Christmas and birthday gifts.
Thanks Collin, Hope you are feeling better soon. Sincerely, Kim H.

    • Angel In the Burg

      KimH…..Score!

My Son is at WKU too and I would love a deal like that. We are in Northern Ohio so not much chance of deals like that here. I send him boxes of food and snaks with all the deals I get thanks to Collin. If it weren’t for her………. he might starve;)

Thanks Collin! Love to see your smiling face on Monday’s!

  18. Tricia

I had never watched one of these videos before. So funny and very informative. Thanks for all the hard work you do on these. Keep them coming.

  19. Suzanne

I don’t go to the dollar stores on a regular basis – I too have found them to be not much better on prices. But I do go to the Dollar Tree around Xmas and load up on gift bags (if I didn’t score enough post-Xmas they year before). They are also really cheap with cards and party supplies which is nice. I say beware of the food items. There is a Dollar General right around the corner from my office and a lot of people get snacks there but when I’ve gone the food has either been super close to expiration or PAST! Not worth it.

  20. Carolyn

I love the Dollar Tree we have here in Vegas. I just scored Fiber One muffin mixes and pancake mixes for 1.00. We all know those are priced much higher. They always have name brand products at the Dollar Tree I go to here and so far nothing has been expired that I have purchased so far. I do love their cards too. They also have packs of birthday invites and thank you cards for just a dollar. I get my kids birthday supplies from there and gift bags too. There is also a .99 Only Store here and they sale produce, dairy, meats, ect. You can get Yoplait yogurt 3 for .99. They have packs of produce for .99. Like 4 tomatoes for .99 for the whole thing! I have also found really cute baby stuff from there that I make into a cute gift basket. Love the dollar stores!!

  21. Roni

I will shop at dollar stores for gift bags and cards…but for the most part I feel I get better deals with the Drugstore deals. I love your videos!!

  22. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

foam poster board is $1.00 at the dollar store – you can’t find it at walgreen’s, cvs or anywhere else for $1 !!

  23. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

cleaning supplies ARE a great deal at the dollar store for $1

  24. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

cards and party supplies can’t be purchased for less than $1 any where else! check out the spices. too

  25. Amy

I likto shop the “dollar” stores for household cleaners and detergents mostly. Pair up their prices with the coupons and can really get a great deal. At Dollar Tree, I find baggies, foil, snacks, cards, ballons, stocking or easter basket stuffers and such. Some of the food items are good as well. Our local store has bread and buns(name brand) for sale…at a dollar!

  26. Barb

Don’t go to the Dollar Tree too often but always find something good there when I go. Many times the manufacturers will sell them a load of newer products. I recently bought a four-pack of Mini-Wheats Little Bites and each box had $1.00 off a box of Mini-wheats, so I actually made a few dollars.

Ours has name brand bread as well. Cannot beat bread for $1. I have bought accessories for my daughter’s iPod, books, Disney items, etc.

I would not buy many of their toys and some of their food items.

  27. KT Fuller

LOVE the video! This was the first one I have watched since finding the site this week. Thanks for the info and all of the information on couponing on this site! What a great attitude you have even if you were sick!
