IKEA: Swedish Meatball Meal ONLY $1 (3/5-3/7) + I’m Going! Yay!
This Hip2Save.com deal was hand-posted on Thursday, March 4th, 2010 at 11:33 am.

This weekend, March 5th-17th, participating IKEA stores are offering up a Swedish Meatball Meal for only $1! This meal not only includes 10 meatballs, but also mashed potatoes and cream sauce! Sounds like a huge portion for just $1! Check out more details here (in the lower left hand corner).
Guess what we’re doing this weekend?! Yep, you guessed it! We’re driving a few hours to IKEA! I cannot wait! This will be the first time I’ve set foot in an IKEA store… how exciting!! I’ve heard fantastic things about IKEA. My sister absolutely loves all their furniture… especially the prices! From seeing some of the pieces in her house…well, I’m guessing, I’m gonna LOVE their furniture too! I’ve also heard IKEA has a nice kids play area, so hopefully my kiddos will have as much fun as me!
(Thanks, The Bargain Jargon!)

is this going to be a follow-me monday? i have never been to ikea and would love to see it from your point of view.
collin says:
We will see…
Lisa says:
Ikea is awesome – the Lingonberry Jam served with the meatballs is GREAT!!!
Kiley says:
I absolutley LOVE IKEA! We have a lot of their furniture and it is priced right! I hope you have fun! The meatball meal is delicious, and a huge portion for only $1!!
tiffany says:
Ikea rocks! make sure to try the chocolate cake for dessert…yum! you can even buy the sauce mix for the meatballs, and frozen swedish balls there so you don’t have to make the trek when you get a craving!
Nikki says:
Collin, you have to buy at least one of their cinnamon buns. My husband and I never leave IKEA without purchasing them, even if we don’t buy anything else. I think that you can get 6 buns for $5.00!
Mandy says:
I agree! The meatballs with the berry sauce is good BUT the cinnamon rolls are SO SO SO good. And the $1 huge ice cream cones!! Enjoy your first visit!
Anonymous says:
IKEA is awesome!!! You will have a blast there. Take a break and try a little Lingonberry juice mixed with Sprite-so refreshing while shopping!
Wendi says:
That is our favorite drink. You got to try this mixed drink, the kids will love it. And because you mix juice with the Sprite it is “healthy”.
Forgo the water and lemon for this.
Mandy says:
I went to an IKEA for the first time two years ago and I was like a kid in a toy store… seriously, I was so excited! The Expedit bookshelf is awesome for wrangling the mess of a kid’s room. We got the 5 sq. x 5 sq. one that’s about 6 feet tall (you secure it to the wall) and now my son’s toys are all confined to one wall! I’m going to get another one for my second son once he starts amassing a lot of toys (he’s only 5 mos. old now!) Have FUN!
hoosierdog says:
Loving Expedit as well! Excellent solid piece that you add legs of various heights and styles to, or leave it legless. You can also put it horizontal or vertical, comes in different sizes. Best IKEA thing we’ve bought since ours opened, and I’m adding the giant one when I make my new couponing room (other people might call it an “office” LOL). DD might disagree – her MALM full bed is pretty awesome, too (VERY heavy solid piece).
Collin, you need comfortable shoes, and be prepared to be there for HOURS, and get a map (there are shortcuts you’ll want to know about). And don’t laugh too hard at the tiny silverware. One warning: be prepared to get a box home and have a piece not work. We had one leather office chair that took 3 trips back to get it right (but still is great years later). Our IKEA is 10 minutes away, but since you’re traveling so far…FYI.
IKEA is definitely an adventure and good deals abound (don’t miss the decor section downstairs and all the curtains are LONG and cheap!).
Amanda F says:
Our family loves the meatballs! We buy some every time we go, and dont forget to buy the sauce packs! That store is a wonderland for adults!
Christy says:
Only downside to the play area is that it is only for 1 hour and you have to be between certain height to be able to stay.
But yes, definitely try the chocolate cake! It is the best!!
Christy says:
You are going to have so much fun Collin! Thanks for the link.
Janet says:
I can’t imagine living HOURS from IKEA. I live 5 mins from one and 25 from another one. I’m there twice a week sometimes! Its a cheap place to grab lunch when I’m at Target across the street.
Nikki says:
I am soooo jealous… wish I lived that close. Although, it is probably better for my wallet that I don’t
Jessica says:
I also LOVE IKEA! We are planning a trip there next weekend actually. Ours is a little out of the way (5 hours) so we make a weekend trip of it.
Tonya says:
I know I’m totally going to be alone on this, but…….I don’t like Ikea
However, their meatballs are delicious and they have a couple cool things for kids’ rooms. And their dishes and glasses/cups are a great price. Especially if you’re looking to stock a cabin or guest house or RV
april says:
lol…I was going to warn Collin not to give her hopes up b/c I did not enjoy it too much myself and after reading the comments I thought I must be alone in this, so I am glad you agree.
Tonya says:
My husband calls it throw away furniture
Cuz once you put it together….don’t try to ever take it apart, move it, and then put it back together. At least that’s the luck we’ve found with it anyway. It’s great for people who are just starting out though.
Christy says:
We bought our bed there and our daughters bed there because it was within our budget and I am dreading having to move it when we get orders to move!
Tonya says:
My husband and I bought an entertainment center there (about 7 years ago) when we were just starting out. It was so big that it had to be taken apart to move to the next house. When we got it put back together it was all wobbly because the screw holes had opened up too big (being that it’s made of particle board or chip board or whatever it’s called). It sucked! So it got thrown away.
Carissa says:
I am a huge fan of Ikea, used to live a few mins from one, but after moving, we don’t have one close anymore
We have a huge desk from Ikea that we moved cross country and it moved very well! It is an upright desk, so we just had to take the top part off, and it worked very well. Sorry to hear that others have not had the same experience
Sarah says:
I have to agree. I had their furniture in college and while it is very cute it falls apart easily. The good thing is it is so popular it holds its value very well. I bought a Wardrobe on for $99 and sold it on Craigslist 2 years later for $75!
Cheryl says:
I love IKEA. I have one about 30-45 min away. Hot dogs are .50…LOL I too have a malm bed as well as the dressers. I love having my bed low to the ground. I think it is cheaply made (not solid wood) and that’s why prices are lower. I actually broke a part of the dresser when trying to move it but overall I still like it. I also got glasses there and candles and you are just going to have so much fun. Make sure you have alot of time to look around because there is stuff everywhere.
Christy says:
we were going to get the malm, but didn’t like how low it was!
Katherine M. Grady says:
You are in for the shopping treat of a lifetime!! I am sooooo envious! To prepare, may I offer:

It is hysterical!
mamabear says:
pppfffttt!!! these vid’s are freakin hillarious!!!!!!!!!!!
Sandra says:
I never realized that I NEEDED a milk frother until my husband and I went there last month. I also HAD to buy the finger puppets even though our sons are 20 and 25 =) They also have wonderful large wooden chopping boards for $10. You might also find yourself talking like the Swedish Chef from Sesame Street when trying to pronounce the Swedish names for each product!
Have a wonderful time!
Erin says:
This is why Ikea’s a mixed bag for me. It’s so easy to buy a bunch of stuff you don’t really want or need. The furniture is definitely not high quality and quite a pain to put together, as others have said, but it sure looks cool! And as temporary solutions, it really can’t be beat. And Ikea carries lots of the other things are fairly inexpensive but neat–the kitchen items (although you will almost always get better quality and better deals at Bed Bath and Beyond), some decor items, flowerpots, and inexpensive vases and vase fillers. It’s definitely a great place to go for ideas, too. Have fun!
deenie says:
Erin
My thoughts exactly. Be careful and don’t buy lots of trinkets, and the quality (esp furniture) is not for long term (mostly particle board) but great cute fun items and some neat decorating ideas
Elisabeth says:
I love IKEA, I wish we had one closer to us. The closet one I think is in Dallas or ATL which is 4 or 5 hours from me
Meghan says:
We love Ikea!! I just emailed the fam to let them know we will be going this weekend (we have one about an hour away). My fiance and I have gotten this great deal before and it will fill you up.
Please be advised – Ikea does not have LEMONS!!! You must bring your own
Enjoy and bring a large vehicle to get your loot home!
Karen B. says:
Hi there, we have an IKEA over the bridge near Newark Airport, where the cafeteria is located so that you can watch the planes land and take off and its a big, sunny room. The kids area is amazing, wear socks and they have to be a certain height and no diapers, I think? its a blast for you and them as well.
Lori says:
which Ikea are you heading to? Maybe we can have a meet Collin lunch date who’s in?
Anon says:
Collin is becoming like a celebrity. Let her have some family time away from all this
Teresa Schilling says:
When I went to check this out it says the 5-7, not the 17. You might want to recheck your dates.
Anon says:
Think she made a typo…..on the heading, she put 5-7, it was down in the post that she made the “mistake”
Amy says:
Have fun! IKEA is great! In case you didn’t know, the playland is only for a little bit and all children have to be potty-trained (don’t know if this affects you or not). Have a great time.
Hope says:
I love IKEA! The closest one to me is an hour away, my mom and I have a had a trip planned for this Sunday for awhile, I’,m so excited about the $1.00 meatballs! They are delicious and Lingonberry jam is excellent on just about anything, they sell it in jars, so I’m stocking up!
Laura says:
Ikea is a marvelous place, you just have to pay attention to what you buy. Touch it, try it out on the sales floor, and read the tags to see what it is made of. Some of it is really cheap and crummy, some of it is very nice – it is typically priced accordingly. We actually remodeled our whole kitchen in our previous house ourselves using their cabinets and countertops. We were very pleased with the quality, they were very easy to assemble and install, and it looked gorgeous and helped us get top price when we sold the house. Without a face frame, the cabinets are also very spacious and hold a ton, the drawers were awesome. The you-get-what-you-pay-for comes into the doors and fronts. You pay a little and get “foil”, or you pay more and we got solid wood, glass doors, etc. There is no way we could have afforded to do the kitchen anywhere else. I wish it were in the budget now to do the kitchen in our current house. I would definitely buy their cabinets again. I live 2.5 hours away from the nearest IKEA now, but I try to get there once a year.

Lots of crazy ideas I’d never think of doing myself!
Meghan says:
You’ll have a blast! Come visit us at the Canton, Mi one!! Which one are you going too?
Couponing4myTacoma says:
This is “my” Ikea too… but it’s an hour east of us… If only I were closer…
Sandy says:
Just to give you a heads up on the kids area….couple things we didn’t realize. I was picturing it to be like McDonald’s play place type of a deal…only maybe with a little fence to separate it and some supervisors. But it’s more like a child care place not a play area. They DO NOT allow parents back there at all. You’re expected to hand your child over at the door, so you don’t see where it is that they’re going, who is watching them and you can’t help them get accustomed to it, they just have to leave your side and venture into the unknown. Also, they only allow a certain number of kids at a time, so there may be a wait. And they are very strict about the height requirement.
None of this is bad stuff, just wanted to prepare you. A friend told us about the great ball pit, so we pumped up our 2 yr. old about getting to go play in it. We went up the escalator and you could see the beautiful ball pit through huge windows….he was sooooo excited. Then we found out we couldn’t go back there with him. Even though he’s terribly shy he was willing to separate because that’s how badly he wanted to play in it. Then we found out there was an hour’s wait. Then we found out he was 1/4 inch too short. We left with a screaming child who cried for an hour until he fell asleep. The whole thing could have been avoided if we knew.
mamabear says:
wth, i have never heard of ikea around here! im near charlotte… im gonna have to check the locations on the site cause its sounds cool.
maybe i live under a rock
Krissy says:
I love Ikea! My “splurge” item is decorated paper napkins, I stock up on them at Ikea. They are cheap and have great patterns! I have the plastic “dishes” for my boys and love them. The plates, bowls and cups are the perfect size for little hands. Love love love the meatballs, and the hot dogs are really cheap for those that don’t like meatballs. The little grocery area is great – try the kettle chips – yum! And don’t for to try the lingonberry drink. YUM!
OK- now I have to go to Ikea SOON!!!!
They are great at Christmas, too! Great wrapping paper and decorations and cute little gifts. They have adorable little tealight candle holders for like 50 cents each. Pair that with a bayberry candle and a tag that reads “On Christmas Eve, a bayberry candle burned to the socket brings love to the home and money to the pocket.” These are perfect little gifts for co-workers, school secretaries, neighbors. Start your Christmas shopping now.
Ok- enough babbling – I need to go “window shopping” on the Ikea website now.
Enjoy!
Shahina says:
coolness – have fun at Ikea! Its a fun store – go early – its less crowded when they first open. Just an FYI alot of the cool stuff sells out quick, so don’t get TOO excited when you see a piece of furniture that you like until you have gone down to the mail level and loaded it inside your cart! Also there is a “clearance/sales” room down by the registers (at least at my Atlanta store) where you can find suff for cheap. Be sure to check out the board before you walk into this room as it will tell you the deal of the day. Sometimes they have take an additional 50% off whatevers in this room type deal. We have found side end tables there for like $2 bucks. They have other slightly damaged items in their too for cheap (plants/phot frames/pics/furniture etc). Don’t forget to buy their famous bamboo plants while your there! I bought one years ago and its huge now! have fun!
Anne says:
The IKEA I go to sometimes in Schaumberg near Chicago (5 hours away) has a separate ball pit for little ones that’s not in the Smalland child care area. I suppose they’re all different.
i just got some MALM dressers and while they are not fine furniture, they are far superior to what you’d get at Target and at a much lower price. They have a $3 can opener that works better than any other I’ve ever tried.
http://www.ikeafans.com/ has forums about everything IKEA. Great resource if you need info on IKEA products.
Kim says:
Hmmm…I haven’t been to an Ikea since shopping for post-college furniture…and I’ve never eaten there. I guess I need to check it out next time I’m near one!
Kim says:
Wow, I just looked at the site and the nearest one is 4.5 hours away! I guess I won’t be going there anytime soon…
Leigh Ann says:
Have fun! We love visiting IKEA. It’s true that to some extent you do “get what you pay for”, but we’ve been really happy with all of our purchases over the years.
And seriously, for the love of all that’s right and good, DO NOT MISS THE CINNAMON ROLLS. Our family thinks it’s worth the hour drive to IKEA just to eat.
Nancy says:
OMG! their meatballs RULE
Rachel says:
my husband and i are considering buying some ikea items, but we arent sure of the quality. does anyone know if a majority of the furniture/bookcases etc. are particle board, or real wood. im assuming particle board. tia.
Lynne W says:
Unless it’s the unfinished pine, they are particleboard. They are much nicer than the particleboard ones we had before – the shelves slot into the pegs so they don’t slide off. The backs are cardboard.
Lacie says:
Most of them are a particle board type material, but they actually aren’t as chintzy as everyone says. Some of the items are real wood, but it’s mostly the super expensive stuff. I had one of their office chairs, a shelf and a few lamps from them and was nothing but thrilled at the quality and price of them. Sure it’s not top of the line furniture store furniture, but it’s not as bad as everyone says.
Krissy says:
we have the LEKSVIK coffee table and love it – it has 6 little cubbies underneath and they sell little baskets to fit. The baskets are great for hiding switchers, coasters, books, etc. It is solid wood and very sturdy.
we also have the ALVE desk. It is beautiful It’s solid wood and even the back is finished, so it could be free-standing in the middle of the room.
We also have the DEGERNES under-bed baskets. They look really great, but were a pain to put together.
Oops- almost forgot my husband’s very favorite chair and ottoman in the whole house POÄNG. It is so comfortable and still looks great after 10 years!
Melissa says:
I love IKEA for the food, lol! We live near the Charlotte store and seems like every time I go I only end up buying something from the food court. Might have to check out this deal!
Lynne W says:
You’re going to have so much fun! After our first trip, we ended up redecorating our family room with an IKEA sofa, two chairs, sofa table and an ottoman! Definitely try the Swedish Meatballs and bring a cooler with ice – you can purchase the meatballs, sauce and jam to cook at home if you get hooked!
rebekah says:
Be sure to take a truck, large van, or a vehicle with a roof rack!! You won’t regret it.:)
Mona says:
I enjoy going there too. However the meatballs are not my favorite. Love the cookies in packages with the jam and cream centers. I bought the best drainer for washing dishes. It expands and actually slopes down so that the excess water after hand washing goes back into the sink. I become amused when I read Ikea of Sweden on the labels but when you scrutinize the product it is made in China.
Peggy says:
I love, love love IKEA! A lot of our house is decorated in IKEA & I always joke to my hubby that they should feature our son’s room in their catalog (he has the bed, dresser, bookcase, toy ‘chest’…). LOL! We have one an hour away, but make it up there pretty often. We even made a last minute trip the weekend before Thanksgiving to buy a new dining room table (10-15 as opposed to the 6 seater we had); hubby and I got there ten min before they closed and went straight to the warehouse for it. We are so hardcore IKEAns! ;0)
Katie Kimmell says:
I love IKEA! I enjoy that I can get so much stuff with such a little price. My favorite finds are their packs of reusable containers that come in a pack with green lids which seem to be those strange sizes you never have. Also I do too buy the napkins because you can get so many different designs for so cheap! My husband and I recently replaced our bedroom set and purchased the MALM bed, nightstands and dressers as well as a new desk for me and storage for scrapbooking for less than $700. I have the 2 of the EXPEDIT cube shelves which I have found so handy for storing glasses or turning horizontally for a sideboard look.
The food is awesome also! We usually try to go and get to eat 2 meals while we’re there. I really enjoy the $1.99 breakfast since you get french toast sticks and then whatever you want for lunch. Definitely a fun place to go!
