what do they mean by “place visited”? the place that the book was about?

Does anyone know if you have to pick your free book from your child’s grade level? My daughter is in 2nd grade and I checked out the free books available on Amazon to see what they were like. She doesn’t read those kind of books anymore. She would be more interested in the 5th-6th grade chapter books. So if you have to choose from your grade level I know she wouldn’t want to do this. Does anyone know?

    • Bren says:

Jennifer….my kids have done this program several times & get whatever book they want (as long as it’s on the free list). It did not have to correlate to their grade level. My son didn’t like any of the books one year & got a much younger level one for his little brother.

  • Kristin says:

THANK YOU! I’m a homeschooling mommy and resources like this all on my favorite site are such a blessing! Thank you thank you!!!!

  • Angela says:

I to am confused. What do they mean by “placed visited”? Do they mean you have to visit a Barned and Noble eight different times and buy eight books to read and then you get a free one? Do they mean what place did you “visit” by reading the book? Does anyone know?

    • Jennifer says:

I used Book 1 The Maze of Bones as a read aloud with my third graders this year. They really enjoyed the story! The characters in the story visit “a location” in each story which helps them find one of the 39 clues. You can visit the website http://www.the39clues.com for more information on the series. I hope you enjoy the stories as much my class and I did!

  • HS says:

I have the same question about “placed visited”?, please…

  • Jenn C. says:

My kids LOVE reading and I LOVE a free book for them. What a great program. Thank you for leading me to this!

  • Molly says:

My kids love this and I love the free books too!

  • Amanda says:

Yay for B&N for doing this, but did you know that many public libraries have summer reading programs too that are completely free and easy to complete for kids? Just throwing another option out there…and I know many people don’t have a library close by, but for those that do, it’s worth looking into!

  • Michelle W. says:

For those who have done this program before, I don’t see an age limit on who can do the reading program, only a recommendation on what grade level each free book is. Could my five year old do this program and just pick a book that he will “grow” into?

  • Amy H. says:

thank you- this is a great program! I never heard of it before but will be doing it this summer w/my 3 kids. We do the summer reading program at our local library every yr too and they always get a free book from that as well. Thank you!

  • Debbie C says:

    Love this. Thank you.

  • Jamie P. says:

Can you read any book or is it you can read any book of the 39 series?? Anyone know an answer?

  • [...] don’t forget to check out this post on the Barnes & Noble summer reading [...]

  • Autumn says:

You can read any book and they are just using the 39 Clues as a theme. The places visited is where the story takes place. We did it last year and it is very simple! It doesn’t matter where you get the books just as long as you read them and filled out the form. It really is a free program!

  • Cam says:

What does it mean by “place visited”?

  • nice post. thanks.

  • I’ll tell you why, because if you really need that extra touch in service, albeit damm near a personal concierge at your fingertips, you should pay for the best. THAT’S WHY!

  • It’s not my thought either, but it is what got the gears moving in my head.
