I love when I receive coupon stories and emails that prove it’s worth standing up for yourself. I think it’s great that so many of you take the time to call a store’s corporate office if you are mistreated or if you believe an employee is not following the coupon policy correctly. Please don’t get me wrong…I know there are many wonderful cashiers who are extremely knowledgeable about their store’s coupon policy and treat couponers with respect; however, I believe that it is important to follow-up if you have a bad experience during checkout. With that being said, check out this email I received from reader, Charity:

Charity’s Target Experience

I was Not a happy camper on my first trip couponing at Target. I did get some major deals, but the cashier told me that she couldn’t take the coupons that exceeded the value. I told her the coupon policy states otherwise. She said that if I read all the fine print, it says that each store can decide if they adjust the coupons and their store doesn’t adjust the coupons. I had printed out the policy, but not all the fine print at the bottom, so I wasn’t sure if she was right??? I came home and looked. I don’t see anything that says that. Also, on the 100 calorie Nabisco deal, they said I had to buy 5 boxes to use both coupons. HUH??? That doesn’t sound right. I have been couponing for years, and no other store that stacks coupons has ever told me such a thing. I emailed corporate today. Not expecting much results but we will see. (Why would I want to shop at a store that you have to constantly argue your way out the checkout?)

Email that Charity receives from Target Corporate:

Dear Charity,

I’m sorry your recent trip to our Target store didn’t meet your expectations.

If you have any questions about a specific coupon or experience using a coupon at Target, we want to help! Please give our Guest Relations team a call at (800) 440-0680. We’ll do the best we can to help you as quickly as possible…

In the meantime, I’d like to share with you some information about our coupon policy. When accepting coupons, we use the following guidelines:

– We accept two kinds of coupons: Target-issued and manufacturer-issued.
– We’ll accept one Target coupon and one manufacturer coupon for the same item, unless either coupon prohibits it.
– We can’t give cash back if the face value of a coupon is greater than the purchase value of the item; in this case, we’re able to adjust the value of the coupon to equal the price of the item.
– We can’t accept coupons from other retailers, or coupons for products not carried in our stores.
– All valid coupons should be presented to the cashier while you’re checking out.

Thanks for writing. Give us a call if there’s anything else we can do to help.

Charity decides to call Target Guest Relations:

I spoke with a LOVELY rep. named Michael. (He is now my hero!) He assured me that individual stores do NOT have their own policies and that they should adjust the coupons. He also told me that with buy one get one Target coupons and manufacturer’s coupons that stack… if they scan without beeping the cashier is supposed to take them AS IS because that means that there are sufficient items purchased. Thinking I may go for round two at Target.

Score one for the home team!!!!

I took my morning off of work today and did my Target shopping. I had a wonderful experience. I stacked all manufacturer’s coupons on top, with Target coupon’s last. My cashier was awesome and was asking me for couponing tips. When she needed help the manager came over and was just as helpful and happy…and she actually knew the coupon policy. I definitely learned when to go from now on!
