Best iPhone Apps to Help You Save Money!

This Hip2Save.com Deal was hand-posted on Monday, June 28th, 2010 at 2:01 pm.

I have received a handful of emails from readers asking for tips/suggestions on choosing the best coupon and savings apps for the Apple iPhone. I have only been an iPhone user for several months now; and sadly, I have yet to download one coupon or savings app! How sad is that?! As a result, I did some research and found what I believe are some of the most popular apps out there to help you save money (many of the apps below have mixed reviews, so try at your own risk). If you have a favorite app that is not included and/or have feedback to offer about an app listed below, please do so in the comment section! :D

Amazon Mobile (FREE): Are you ever in a store just about to purchase an item and then wonder whether the same item is cheaper online? The Amazon Mobile app allows iPhone, iPad and iPod touch owners to very quickly search, shop, compare prices, read reviews, and make purchases on Amazon.com using a simple, yet elegant, interface.

CompareMe Shopping Utility ($1.99): How often do you find the product you want available in several different sizes and wonder which size gives you the most bang for your buck?! Well, CompareMe compares and converts prices of products with many different package sizes, volumes, and lengths.

Yard Sale Mapper (FREE): Maps yard sale, garage sale and tag sale listings from Craigslist. Users can visually scour listings, then select a listing to view more detailed information. Once a sale is found, Yard Sale Mapper gives users step by step directions to find the garage sale address.

Grocery Gadget ($4.99): Gives shoppers the ability to upload and share online shopping lists, run price comparisons and retrieve coupons.

Gas Buddy ($2.99): Find the cheapest gas stations in the US and Canada. Gas Buddy gives distance, directions and time estimates to each location.

Save Benjis+ ($2.99): Enables users to can scan product barcodes using an iPhone camera, then see internet offers for the best price on that particular product.

Red Laser (FREE): Searches for low online and local prices from hundreds of thousands of retailers and uses state-of-the-art barcode recognition that can read virtually any product barcode. Here’s what reader, Kelly, had to say about this app…
“Have you seen this barcode scanner yet? Totally awesome! I was reading a magazine last night that mentioned it, so I thought I would check it out. You can scan any item with a barcode and it automatically searches local (using your gps location) and online retailers and displays current prices for the scanned item. Totally awesome!”

Coupon Cash ($1.99): Cut your grocery bill by maximizing the coupon value. Helps you determine the best time to use a coupon by letting you know when and where the product is on sale.

Grocery IQ (FREE): Build new shopping lists quickly by simply scanning the barcode for any product and share your lists with others by using the new List Sharing feature; Find free coupons for items that you’re shopping for and print them or add them to your store loyalty card.

Coupon Manager ($2.99): Shopping tool to manage your coupons. You can add, modify or delete coupons; search coupons by coupon name; sort coupons by name and expiration date; show coupons by category that you customize.

Does anyone know if Blackberry has anything like that?

  • Michelle says:

I downloaded and used Grocery Pal for the 1st time this weekend; it was a free app. It let me set lists for the stores I was going to, compare local store deals to find the best price (although I found that it wasn’t necessarily a full list of deals), enter the item cost and how many I was going to purchase (and would calculate total cost), note if I had a coupon for the item and for how much, and would tally a total amount at the bottom (however, it does not seem to factor in coupons being used into the total). Overall, I thought it was a useful app especially being that it was free!

  • Sarah says:

I like Spending, it helps me keep track of my money. What I would love is a good coupon database.

hip2save has one … it isn’t complete … but is a good start

    • Mari says:

Lol, for a second I forgot we were taking about Apps, and I was going to say I like spending money too, lol, though I am not sure how spending it helps keep track of it.

  • Tammy says:

I use the Grocery IQ app and don’t know how we lived without it before. It’s AMAZING!!!! It categories everything for you and then let’s you know if coupons.com has a coupon for it. You can also scan items in and once you & your hubby are linked, every time you or him update the list, you get notified!! Which is perfect cause I never have to get a call from my hubby when he’s in the store asking “what’s on the list” while I’m at work. The best part about the App, it’s free!!! So if it doesn’t work as perfect for you, you just delete it =)

  • I have one called Holiday Shopping List. I like it because it keeps my list of people from year to year, and once I purchase something for someone, I can add it to that person’s list and I won’t forget that I have it later in the year. And it even has fields for budgeted amount and amount spent.

I know “droid” has some of the apps she listed. I just got the EVO on Friday and it is kinda like the droid.

    • Nikki says:

I also have the Evo… and I have been downloading apps like crazy. I have the Grocery IQ app, but I am still trying to figure out how to use it.

  • Maria Gil says:

Save Benjis is free this week. It’s under RedLaser. I used it to scan everything (books, water bottles, toys) and it works well.

    Enjoy.

  • Michele R says:

I really like my Grocery IQ app. I like that I run lists at several different stores on the same app and easily go back and forth. I also have red laser and pic2shop, which is similar to red laser.

  • I just reviewed CardStar, it’s AWESOME!! Basically, CardStar is a free mobile app that consolidates and scans loyalty, membership and rewards cards from an iPhone, iPod Touch, BlackBerry or Android device. They have over 500 merchants listed from the library to CVS, Costco, Rite Aid, and more! As a part of my review, CardStar is giving away (2) $25 iTunes gift cards. Thanks Colin for letting us share Apps we love too!

Aaagh crap another reason to get rid of flip Ive had for a good 7 years and go buy this $400 Apple. Uuugh. lol Waay cool features for users to doubt.

  • Heather says:

I really like the Shopper app by MidCentury Software. I use it primarily for my grocery store runs (i.e. Meijer, Kroger), not for drugstores…I will often make separate lists for separate transactions and find that it’s pretty accurate for calculating cart totals, including tax on taxable items.

In any case, there’s a Lite version and the full version is only 99c so in my opinion it’s worth it. You can add in coupons and it has a barcode scanner, although I don’t personally use it. Oh, and I also figured out that I can add catalinas to my “cart” in order to make my total more accurate. I name them “Meijer $3 CAT” (or whatever is applicable), enter the quantity, then enter the amount in the coupon section. It then deducts the $3 from my total when I add it to my cart! Nice!

I find it very easy to use!
