Remember the recalls that McNeil announced back in January and May of this year for select Tylenol, Motrin, Zyrtec, and Benadryl products?! Well, unfortunately, McNeil has announced yet another recall of 21 lots of over-the-counter medicines.

What items are being recalled?

Why is McNeil recalling these items?

This action is a follow-up to a product recall originally announced in January which was initiated following consumer complaints of a musty or moldy odor, which has been linked to the presence of trace amounts of a chemical called 2,4,6-tribromoanisole (TBA). The risk of serious adverse medical events is remote.

What should I do if I purchased these products and currently have them in my medicine cabinet?

Stop using the product and contact McNeil Consumer Healthcare for instructions on a refund or replacement. For these instructions, and information regarding how to return or dispose of the product, consumers should log on to the internet at www.mcneilproductrecall.com or call 1-888-222-6036 (Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Time, and Saturday-Sunday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern Time).

What do I do with the recalled medication(s) that I currently have in my possession?
*Unless instructed otherwise, do NOT dispose of unused medicines by emptying them into your sink, toilet, or storm drain.
*Some states may have regulations regarding pharmacy or community take-back programs in which they may receive and dispose of returned unused drugs for patients. Contact your local pharmacy or local authority to determine if it participates in such programs.

    This is getting ridiculous…

I’m done with McNeil products. We have switched to generic/store brand. I also have yet to receive any type of coupon or refund on the items I previously submitted to them for the 1st recall (of this year).

    • Wes

Brandy – I’d check with them again. We received our product refund approximately 2 weeks after filing the claim.

I agree however that this recall for McNeil products is beginning to get ridiculous!

    • Lauren W

Brandy, I would definitely follow-up as I got the cheques fairly fast after filling out their online form!

I agree, this is getting nuts…

Yeah…I’m all over Meijer brand from now on. It’s WAY cheaper. I just don’t trust McNeil anymore.

As a bargain shopper, I got a bunch of McNeil products at Walgreens earlier in the year (3 or more bottles of chilren’s motrin and Tylenol) and submitted my claim. I got back way more by way of refund than I purchased the bottles for with the sales and coupons…. so I can’t complain. I always shop generic, unless I find a great price that beats generic – which is what happened earlier. But, I guess now they’ve become a moneymaker!

do we mail back the product or how does this work?

  5. Laura B.

    Scary!

  6. Dwana

I think I’m going to stick with generics from now on. *sigh*

  7. Our Nifty Notebook

This is pretty scary, but you would think the generics were at the same risk. We just don’t hear about them?

    • Aneta

Yeah, I was wondering that too! They’re made with the exact same ingredients, but I don’t see how they would be able to notify consumers. Through a TV commercial, like, ATTENTION ALL WHO BOUGHT WALGREENS BRAND IBUPROFIN?

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I work in a drugstore and every week there are many many items on the quarantine list for any various number of reasons. Most of them are voluntary due to “quality” lot numbers etc. etc and concerning the generics being at risk, not exactly. Name brands don’t usually produce generics, therefore they aren’t generally made under the same roof so to speak. I forget the actual terminology but you’re safe taking the generic. If any type of recall has been issued to the store registers physically will not check the item out to you, in my store at least.

I bought a zillion of their recalled products but only contacted them about 2 tylenol packages I purchased. I NEVER got any coupons for replacements even though I contacted them via phone and email. Instead all I got were a ton of letters from them asking for my medical information related to my incident with their products. I finally sent one back stating I had not had a reaction but that I was requesting a replacement for the recalled products. I have not heard from them since!
    They SUCK!

how do i see what lots have been recalled all i have is my phone so i cant see lot numbers can someone email them to me

  10. Amy

I emailed because i had a bunch of the small bottles that were recalled before, but they were at the expiration date at that time, and i got an email to call them about the recall stuff, and she said she was going to resubmit it… but i have not seen any (They said that it was because it was recalled) I know on many things, the Generic items are usually made by the parent company (read the box car fully , i know years back they use to say made by …. Company) i haven’t checked lately (Because my family seems to be only for “NON generic stuff…”) so im not sure if it is that way anymore.

I had a recalled Tylenol PM… I’ve already taken half the bottle. I feel fine but would like to know what this trace chemical is capable of doing to me. I wish they would provide more details about what to look out for.

In my medicine cabinet I have 3 packs of Rolaids, 2 Motrin, 1 Benadryl… at this point I’m scared to take them because they could be recalled any day. Like many of you, I’m going to lay off McNeil products for a long time. Since I have my receipts and the unopened products, I wonder if I could exchange them for an off brand?

  12. shannon

I never buy thier products anymore…they charge way too much , then agravate us with stuff like this…Generic all the way…LOL

  13. MommySpendsLess

I agree with the rest of you.
When they issued the first recall, I had two big (100 ct.) bottles of Rolaids and a bottle of Tylenol in my cabinet that were part of the recall. I sent them an email and weeks later I got a coupon to replace ONE item, and it had a short-term expiration date as well.
During the second recall, I had a bottle of Infant Tylenol that we hadn’t opened yet and after their unimpressive response the first time, I didn’t even bother to contact them for a refund/replacement. I ended up buying the Target brand acetaminophen, which is less than half the price. While I have no problem buying generics myself, when it came to the baby I thought name brand would be safer so I was willing to pay the higher price for “real” Tylenol…not anymore!
