Did you know Old Navy has a price adjustment policy?! I had absolutely NO idea that this policy existed until several days ago when I received this email from reader, Chris…

I just had to share this with someone and this seems like the perfect place. I took my kids to Old Navy on June 28th when they were having the 30% off everything in the store sale. I thought I had saved a bunch of money on that day even though I struck out in their clearance section. I went back this Friday to return an item and noticed that a lot of the items that I had bought were now on sale. I asked them what their price adjustment policy was on items that were marked down on sale and they said if it was a sale item and it was within 2 weeks of purchasing them they could give me an adjustment. If it was on clearance though I would have to bring the item back, have them return it and then I’d have to re-buy at the clearance price. I had them scan my receipt to see if I could save a few more cents on the items that were now listed as sale items (i.e. swimsuits for $5 which I paid full price last week but got 30% off) and to my surprise, I got a $40 credit back on my card!! I took a chance, but it was definitely worth asking!

How awesome is that?! After reading this email, I immediately emailed Old Navy for more information about this policy so here are all the details that I received in that email…

We’re happy to offer a one-time price adjustment when the original receipt is presented in any Old Navy store within 14 days of the date of purchase if the item has been reduced in price, this includes clearance items. Unfortunately, we don’t make exceptions outside of the 14 day time frame to ensure fair and equitable treatment of all our customers. Please note; items purchased using a discount coupon are NOT eligible for a price adjustment.

So that got me wondering whether this same price adjustment policy can be applied to online purchases. After some searching, I discovered that Old Navy also has an online price adjustment policy!! Here is that policy taken directly from OldNavy.com

* We offer a one-time price adjustment if an item is marked down within fourteen (14) days of the date on your purchase. To obtain a price adjustment on an online purchase, you must call 1-800-OLD-NAVY, or send us an email message at custserv@oldnavy.com within the fourteen (14) day window. Include your order number in your email message. If you are within the deadline, we’ll refund you the difference in your original form of payment.

* Items purchased with a promotional discount are not eligible for price adjustments. See promotion for details. However, items purchased with rewards certificates or free shipping promotions are eligible for price adjustments.

* A price adjustment for an online purchase will not be made in a Gap, Old Navy or Banana Republic store.

* We will not make price adjustments on online purchases for items featured in clearance pricing events in Gap, Old Navy or Banana Republic stores.

Did you know about this policy? Have you ever used the policy and received a credit back?

I knew about this policy and have taken advantage of it several times. Even when I have used a discount code they still did the adjustment. Love it!

  2. Jen

I shop at Old Navy all the time, and do this quite frequently. There are many other stores out there that have price-adjustment policies as well, which is great. If you shop at a store frequently enough, you know how their sales roll, so if theres something you really love, get it while your size/style is still in stock and go back for a price adjustment. Especially with a store like old navy where their stock literally changes every 14 days, so it is rare that something won’t go on sale in those 14 days.

  3. sabrina

when i worked at belk department stores i did this a lot!

  4. Chris

Yes, I’ve also seen people bring a new coupon in with their old receipt and get the new coupon applied within that window.

  5. katg

Also at Old Navy if you find something with a stain and you ask for a discounted price you can get 60% off (at least i did) but you may not return the item if the stain does not come out. These days however you can get most every stain out! I’ve gotten some pretty good deals this way.

    • momwhocares

I try not to tell people that, as I have heard people say they do it on purpose to get a discount. What I have also learned is many companies will ask you to buy the same item that isn’t stained and they will put that stained one in the back to write off.

It seems the only time the discount may happen is if it is the last item of it’s kind/size on the rack. Unless the sales person/store doesn’t care about offering the discount.

I wanted a pair of shoes once and saw it was scuffed on the side and mentioned the scuff to the sales girl there. She went to the back and came out with the same exact pair of shoes and said these ones are fine. Note: I never asked for a discount when I mentioned it to her. I bought the unscuffed ones – and wasn’t upset about it.

I always shop on Old Navy’s website and have always called to get price adjustments and they are wonderful about it! I remember one big order I placed had quite a few price adjustments that applied and I got over $80 back. I did spend over $400 originally but hey $80 is wonderful! Also a few times I forgot to enter a coupon code and called them and they applied it and refunded my card. Their customer service is wonderful and so helpful!

  7. Charmagne

I have used this policy many times as well. I purchased a table and chairs from target and on day 14 saw that it had gone on sale. I brought my receipt back and got about $100 credited back to my card! It’s always worth it to check prices even after you’ve purchased something, just for this reason. =)

  8. Tiphanie

That is cool. I wonder how many other stores do this. I was going to say i know Target does this also, but not on clearance items. ( I used to work there)

    • Kim

Really? 2 summers ago I bought a tent on clearence then noticed the next week it went from 50% to 75% and they adjusted it for me…………….guess I really lucked out. 🙂

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I worked at Hollister in college — both Hollister and Abercrombie have a similar policy. I also recently asked The Limited about it and they do a similar policy (I think it’s a month actually — but I’m not sure about that!) I think a lot of stores have a policy similar — but I doubt they advertise it very much

  9. Melissa

Thank you SO MUCH!!! I just made an online purchase last week a DAY before the 15% off promo started, so I was just about to look into this today to see if I could get an adjustment.
Bottom line, it never hurts to ask.

  10. Rachel

Most stores will do this. The reason is because most stores have at least a 30-day return policy. If they aren’t willing to make a price adjustment, then you could return the items for what you paid and repurchase them at the new discounted price…doing this takes up their time and yours, so most are willing to do a price adjustment.

  11. Sarah

I use this policy all of the time. Its a great one and a fantastic company. Gap and Banana will do the price adjustments for items purchased in the store. LandsEnd.com has a price adjustment policy as well.

  12. sg

I did the same thing at Gap when I was returning a swim suit that had gone on clearance…I got a chunk of change back on my credit card too:)

  13. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I forgot the name of the website, unfortunately, but there is a website that you can enter the details of your purchase (items, price, store name, etc) and if something goes on sale within 14 days from the date of your purchase they will email you to let you know. That’s awesome cause then you don’t have to keep track of your purchases, they do it for you!

  14. Anikka

Key point is KEEP YOUR RECEIPT. I made the mistake once of throwing out a receipt for a coffee table from Target. We knew we were keeping it and so I saw no reason to hang on to the receipt. Well sure enough 2 days later it went on sale for like $30 off. Knowing that you have a week to make the price adjustment we went back exactly one week later receipt less. They have signs all over “No Receipt, No Problem” advertising that if you used a debit/credit card you can return without a receipt. We found out this means ONLY returns and not price adjustments. So we could return it and then re-buy at the new price but we couldn’t just get a price adjustment. The manager was INCREDIBLY rude….probably the only time I’ve ever run into a rude “Team Member” at Target. So we left and actually drove to a different store just to see if we’d get the same answer and we did.We didn’t want to take apart the table to return it so we gave up. Assuming the receipt was long gone we continued errands and got home late that night. In a fit of frustration I started digging through the garbage and lo and behold I found the receipt. We hopped in the car and got there like 10 minutes before the store closed (on a Saturday Night) and they did the adjustment.

Long story short I think it’s odd that they can’t do the adjustment but they can do a return. I’m sure it has something to do with the way their computer was set up. I learned my lesson though….keep the receipt!

    • Rita

if you pay by credit card..they can pull up your receipt.

      • Betsy's Third

For $30, I would have load the same table up into a cart – check it out and return it under your old receipt. If you didn’t have it – I would have used two different credit cards and then have gone up to the customer service area and used the credit card with the one that was $30 more to return it.

      • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I had payed by credit card and they couldn’t look it up. We were shocked and upset since they advertise they can. It’s only for returns though!

  15. Laura M

Kohls does this as well. 14 day policy… bring your recipt back, online works too. There are a few exceptions to it though, does not work on clearance or BOGO

  16. lamnova02

This is a hidden secret at most department stores — Kohl’s, Bon-Ton, Macy’s, etc. I never used it at Old Navy, but have at Kohl’s. Very easy!

  17. Kristen

I haven’t used this, but they also have a policy where if something is defective, you can return it AT ANY TIME. I bought a pair of jeans for my son and the snap came off. They returned them and gave me a BRAND NEW PAIR!

Also, I bought my daughter a dress on clearance this past Easter (over 50% off) because one of the straps of the dress was broken. I saved over $10 on an adorable white ruffle spring dress (that was newly released and was full priced at the time I bought it). I paid less than $10 for a dress that took me less than 1 minute to repair. Definitely worth looking at the “as is” stuff sometimes. You can’t tell — and it’s now stronger than it would have been otherwise!

    • Danielle Miller

My husband bought a shirt at Kohls and after just one washing as directed on the label, there was a big hole in it. Took it back to the store and got a new one. No problem. They wanted his receipt, but he didn’t have it. They still let him do the exchange.

  18. Ln

Gymboree has a policy like this as well. I wish I knew the name of the website that one commenter above mentioned that would let you know if something comes on sale withing 14 days. That would be nice to have, especially if you’ve purchased something that costs quite a bit of money.

  19. Melissa

Just called Old Navy – and I was able to get a price adjustment on a promotion! Apparently, in addition to the 14 day price reduction refund available, if you make a purchase 24 hours before a promo starts (in this case, I purchased online right before the ONSAVE15 started), you can contact them for the adjustment.
    Just saved $17 more off!!

  20. Liz

Yes-I did this last Chrismas at Old Navy when I bought gifts that then were on sale later. I got like $50 back.
I also just did this at Target. They have the same policy. If the item goes on sale within 14 days of purchase, just bring in your receipt and they will refund you. I got $15 back!

  21. Becky

I actually did know about this policy (not that the clearance items had to be brought in to be retruned and repurchased at the lower price however). Wish I thought to tell you sooner! Gosh, like 5 months ago I bought quite a few things at Old Navy. I got a pair of sweats in blue and LOVED them. The next weekend I went back to Old Navy to get another pair of those sweats in pink. When I went to get them I saw they were now on sale and I happened to have the receipt with me. I didn’t think they would do anything but when I asked she asked for my receipt and scanned it. Not only did the credit for the pants populate, but 4 other things that I bought that day were now on sale and I got a credit for them and I had no clue they were on sale! Most stores will just look at the receipt, scan the item and give you the difference, but Old Navy is the only store I know of that will scan the receipt and give you a credit for everything and not just that one item you ask about, which saves you from having to run all around the store looking for the items to see what is now on sale. Another reason why I LOVE Old Navy!

  22. Ln

Okay I googled it and this is what I found:

excerpt from site: Use tracking sites
Track your purchases at free deal-generating sites that notify you if a given item’s price drops within the time period selected. PriceProtectr.com monitors purchases through 146 retailers, including Best Buy and Staples, while comparison search engine PriceGrabber.com tracks specific items at hundreds of online retailers.

Meant to saythat the article I posted above also listed details about price adjustment policies from many diff. stores.

  24. Jessica

I love ON’s price adjustment rule, I use it all the time at xmas time. You know how everything goes down to next to nothing after the holiday passes?! This way I get to give ppl stuff they’ll really like, and as long as I buy it within that last week before xmas I can go back for the P.A. the week after. I’ve gotten back hundreds of dollars! That’s my secret trick, I guess not so secret anymore 😉

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I’ve done this too, but now I’m wondering if this would work since they’re saying you have to bring clearance merchandise back in to get the new lower price?

  25. Amy

Menards also has price adjustment policy, last year we purchased a bunch of ceiling fans and lights for remodeling our house. The next week, the 4 fans we bought went down $50 a piece…I asked at customer service and received $200 back!!!! Price adjustment policies are worth looking into!!

  26. kirstin88

I wonder how new this policy is. A year and a half ago I called my Old Navy to see if they would adjust a price, and they said they couldn’t. I would have to return it and then find another one on the rack.

  27. nicole corry

fyi last year when I was doing the day after thanksgiving shopping I saw alot of people who had bught sumstuff the day before and brought it back that day to get the discount!!

    • chris

I actually have done this now for the past few years. I take advantage of all the websites that are now out there posting Black Friday ads before they even come out in the paper and decide ahead of time what I am going to buy. If the items they have listed in their flyers are in stock before Black Friday, I buy the items that I want and take the receipt back for a price adjustment. I usually look for places that advertise their Black Friday deals as two day sales so I don’t have to fight the crowds on Black Friday itself to go back and get my price adjustment since the crowds are pretty well dissapated on Saturday. A big exception that I have found to this is the items listed as “door busters”. Most stores will not adjust an item if it is listed as “door buster” and it’s also a good idea to ask ahead of time about their price adjustment policy because it varies from store to store. Target, Kohls and Walmart seemed to be the most willing to price adjust with almost no questioning. Best Buy, however seemed to me to have the worst price adjustment policy and they even list in their Black Friday flyers that most of their return/adjustment policies are different for that day itself. It never hurts to ask though!

  28. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Yes, have known about this for a while. It’s great to do on those crazy 1-day sale items like flip flops, tanks, fleeces, etc. Buy earlier in the week when the selection is good and you’re not getting trampled by the crowds. Then on the day of the sale, go in with your receipt and get the low price!

    • Samantha

That’s what I’ve been doing for the One Day Wonders, too. I have a 2 year old and I will just go buy what I want when it is convenient during the week and then go out later on a Saturday when the crowds have died down. I love that you only have to bring your receipt in for a price adjustment! I have not taken advantage of it yet, but did notice as others have that Kohls has a price adjustment policy, as well.

  29. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I’m confused by “Please note; items purchased using a discount coupon are NOT eligible for a price adjustment.” I’m pretty sure I’ve bought things using a coupon and then gone back for a price adjustment on those items. I almost always use some sort of coupon at ON, so does this mean I won’t be able to do price adjustments? Or are they saying they won’t apply the coupon on top of the price adjustment?

    • chris

I am actually the one that sent Collin the email about my $40 savings at Old Navy, and I’m a little confused about that statement as well. All of the items that I had orginally purchased were eligible for the 30% discount that they were offering on all the items in their store. When I brought my receipt back for the price adjustment, the cashier was able to use her scanner on the receipt and the register/computer actually found all the items that were eligible for the price adjustment on 8 of the 10 items that I had purchased. The only thing I can think of is that because I didn’t actually use a coupon to get a discount on these items (it was a storewide discount), that is why all those items were eligible for the adjustment.

  30. Rita

use this at GAP all the time

  31. Hannah

My husband worked at the Gap years ago, and he told me about it. We use it all the time!

  32. Anya

I love priceadjustment at ON.. I always keep my reciept. I have done this a few times before a huge sale (you know on sale day most items you are looking for are gone and there really isnt much left to choose from).. so I go and buy what I need a day or two before the sale and then bring the receipt in and they price adjust it.

  33. Crissy

Wow, I had no idea this was so common. I’m definitely going to pay more attention & check out those tracking websites b/c I know I’ve seen clothes go on sale right after I bought them. I did this at Toys R Us earlier this year. I’d purchased one of those Leapfrog fridge toys for my niece’s bday & then 2 weeks later they were 1/2 off & those $5 coupons were everywhere. I called & she told me I could just bring the receipt in & my coupon, so I ended up getting $15 bucks back! She told me the same thing someone else mention…that you could technically just return it & rebuy with your receipt within 30 days, so although their official policy for price adjustment was 2 weeks, they would do it within 30. I’m surprised you could do it with a one day sale or things like black Friday shopping. If that’s the case why wouldn’t everyone by the black Friday deals the week before & skip the whole crazy shopping frenzy, then just go back for a price adjustment? I guess you’d probably still have to go within the sale window to get the price adjustment?

    • Crissy

      by = buy

  34. Tara

We have a Carter’s and Osh Kosh outlet by us so I get a lot of my daughter’s outfits form there. I was told my managers at both stores that if I see something I like that she needs to grow into, buy it, keep the tags on it and the receipts and if she doesn’t fit into it that next summer etc, then I can return it or exchange it. I am pretty sure this is good for clearance as well.

  35. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I do this all the time at Old Navy!! It’s WONDERFUL!!

  36. Christy

I’ve done this at Kohl’s before.

  37. Jess

american eagle, and target do the same! saved tons of money that way!

  38. Jennifer

I have done the price adjustment many times and often carry my receipts from Old Navy, Gap, etc. in my purse until the 14 days (with Old Navy) and 7 days (with Gap) have expired from purchase date. I often ask them to see if there is a price adjustment. Even when they have had their take an extra 50% off clearance – all I have to do is have the receipt and they will deduct the additional 50% off the clearance items I bought the week before. I have never had to bring in my clearance item to return it and then rebuy it. I have only had to bring in my receipt and they do it with no problems. Gap’s policy is now 7 days from date of purchase! It’s wonderful and has saved us many dollars!

  39. Meagan

I worked at Gap for 6 years so I know all too well about this policy. It was a pain before they made the switch to the new cash register system a few years back. It’s really easy to do now though and so nice!

  40. julie

When i used to work at macys we did this too, I think it was within 1 week though

  41. Tina

I have used this policy before. I bought my kids some clothes, and the next week they had their kids/baby sale. I just handed them my receipt, they scanned it and I got $60 back! I used to buy some more clothes! Gotta love Old Navy!!

  42. Lindab

I’ve worked for Gap Inc for 15 years. (Gap/Banana Republic/Old Navy/Piperlime.com) YES PRICE ADJUST!!! Banana Republic is 7 days, Gap is 7 days and old Navy is 14 days. Anything ending with $.97 is a final sale and therefore no further price adjustments will be made. And the item can’t be returned. We are not really suppose to advertise this benefit but, I do. I think my customers like to save as much as I do. You might be surprised at how many stores price adjust. Kohl’s, Carson Pirie Scott, Macy’s, JC Penney’s are some that I’m fairly confident still do. Many also meet competition pricing.

  43. Linda

I didn’t read the whole thread so maybe there was talk of this already. I’m curious as to what other stores offer price adjustment policies. Might be a good topic for a Follow Me Monday video.

  44. Linda

ok – guess I should have read before I posted. I see many stores listed. Thanks everyone!

  45. Christa

Last year we bought some TVs at Target before Thanksgiving, then asked for a price adjustment during the sale. Very simple! Their policy states online that they will adjust the price if it goes on sale the same week or the following week of purchase.

I have gotten some price adjustments at Toys R Us too so I thought about trying it there with the Black Friday deals, but when I was shopping on Black Friday morning I noticed that the Customer Service desk was closed until noon, so it wouldn’t be possible to do a return during their best sale hours.

Eddie Bauer has an adjustment policy too.

  46. Joanne

Most stores do price adjustments… Ann Taylor, LOFT, Victoras Secret, as mentioned Gymboree. hold on to your receipt and ask.

  47. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Too bad I only order my daughter’s clothes from gap.com when I have a coupon code.

  48. Erin Fisher

I have also done some preshopping on those 1 day sales. 🙂 Just stay within the limit and you should be fine 🙂

  49. Peggy

Yup, I actually found out about it from a comment on here about an ON one day sale, like last year! Now, I always go in the day before the sales (those tank top, flip flop, etc), buy the stuff, then go back in & get an adjustment. Saves me a lot of hassle & I don’t have to fight with people over the last pair of pink flip flops! ;o)
