My Commissary Deals (I Saved 80% & YOU can too!)

So I headed to the Commissary yesterday and was able to score some awesome bargains! I have highlighted most of the deals I was able to score below. I purchased a total of 80 items and spent just $28.72 out of pocket (including a $5.93 Surcharge which is like Military tax). My total was $120+ before coupons, so I ended up having a savings of 80%! Basically each item cost me $0.36! Gotta love coupons! 🙂

Side note, the Tony’s Pizzas I purchased were actually not priced well (in my opinion)… they were $2 and I’ve seen them go on sale for $0.99 at various stores, however, I had FREE pizza coupons they had sent me for doing a giveaway previously, so decided to go ahead and used those coupons.  And I also want to mention that this wasn’t a normal grocery run for me. I was honestly just trying to get prices for various items we all have coupons for, so that I could make an extensive Commissary deals list.

Some of the items I purchased were actually better than FREE and I was able to apply the overage towards other products in my transaction (like the bread, carrots and a few other items I didn’t have coupons for)! The Commissary actually allows this… in their coupon policy it states, “Valid coupons will be entered at the value stated on the coupon. If the value of the coupon exceeds the cost of the product, the customer will be given the full value of the coupon.” Pretty Cool, huh?!

For all you Commissary shoppers, I’m hoping the list below will help you save just as much as I did… possibly more! If you’re not a Commissary shopper, I am still hoping this will motivate you to clip those coupons. If I can save this much, I promise, you can too!

Quick response to problems with cashiers. One always carry the coupon policy with you there is a link above. At the commissary I shop for the right cashier just like at CVS or Walgreens. I have one or two I develop a relationship with and I find everything goes much smoother. There’s one at our commissary that I refuse to go to if they send me to her line because she always calls a supervisor over and questions every coupon. I try to do self check out as often as possible. The cashiers are a little more easy going or trying t multi task more. Bottom line is they usually push my coupons through. If your store has them try and use them. Ours in Florida has a 40 items or less lane and I just wait for it and let anyone else go in front of me to the 15 item self checkouts. That also saves tipping a bagger because I bag and carry out my own groceries.

You’re an amazing shopper!! Do you know if military cards are issued to surviving offspring of military personnel? My father served in the Navy in WWII & the Vietnam war. He & my mother passed away 5 years ago.

    • Beverly Kerwin

You only get a pass if you are a surviving child that is unmarried of a deceased vet that died from in service injuries.

  3. Stephanie

Thankyou so much for posting commisary deals! It would be awesome if you could keep it up, its a HUGE help! Thanks again, Your awesome!!

  4. Allie

  5. Laury

That’s a lot of KY. I can see why you have a happy husband! : )

    • Jaclyn

      LOL!!! 😉

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      😉 😉 happy husband indeed 😉

    • Joli Smith

I was thinking she had quite a bit of KY there! LOL

  6. Jaclyn

Stupid question…..can you shop at the Commissary if you are “non military”. Not sure if there was a way & then you just add a percentage or surcharge to your order. My dad use to be in the Air Force years ago, would that qualify at all? What about if I was a “friend” or a military person, although I can’t think of anyone off hand. I would love to get some deals- LOL!
    Thanks 😉

    • Tara

To shop at a commissary, you must be an eligible patron. Only service members and their dependents are eligible to shop at military commissaries and exchanges. You have to have a military ID to shop there. Anyone who shops for someone else at the commissary can lose this privilege. We don’t pay tax at commissaries. The surcharge we pay is not a tax. It is because the commissary system is not intended to make a profit. The 5 cent surcharge pays for “commissary construction, equipment and maintenance.”

  7. frances

You need to have a military ID or go with someone that has an ID

    • Tara

You are not allowed to shop for someone else at a commissary. If you are caught, you can lose your commissary privileges. This is one of the nice benefits of having a family member who serves so be very careful how you use it.

      • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I was raised military and married military. A better word than benefits, is compensation. Our military spouses generally make less than civilians in the same job sector. Savings at the commissary helps cover the pay difference, thus compensation 🙂
By the way, thrilled to finally find a site with the commissary on it!

  8. SusieHomemaker

This may be a stupid question, but are all commissary prices the same? If I go to the commissary in my hometown, will I save as much? Should I make my shopping list after yours? Thanks.

    • Ebony

They are a little different depending where you are like California Commissary tends to have higher pricing, sometimes my commsy in GA is higher than others. I think for the most part you can get the same deals but sometimes they vary I would just take the list with you maybe make a pricebook so you have a reference point.
And remember the prices do change about twice a month.

    • Jen J

you an also go onto commissaries.com u will need valid information that u are a patron that is eligible but u can see a list of sale items and their prices.

    • mel

I think the prices would be the same from state to state, however the prices seem to fluctuate like one week something is 1.50 and a few days later it is 2.00 then it’s back to 1.50.

  9. Tara

One thing I always buy at the commissary is meat. It is ALWAYS a good price.

  10. Kathy Sheridan

    Hi,

I shop at the commissary all the time. Some things are real good prices and some are not. You just have to know your prices. But I always do great when I shop there. I have a question. Does the commissary accept coupons you print off the internet? Thanks.

    • Kara

yes the commissary does take internet printables. Be sure to carry the coupon policy from above with you.

  11. Jill

Thank you for the Commissary deals. These posts are very helpful!

  12. Bridgette

I would just like to know how you eat those foods that arent the healthiest choice and manage to stay so thin 🙂

  13. Samantha

One problem I have had at our local commissary is the coupons I print out at coupons.com. If the coupon is a printout and it is for more than the amount of the item itself, they won’t accept it. Has anyone else had this issue? If there is any overage created by the coupon, they put it aside. So frustrating!

    • Ebony

Nope they are still supposed to give you the overage, contact the store manager OR email DeCa on their website and print out the response and take it with you

  14. Shannon

I was at our commissary last night and had an IP coupon that was from catalina marketing and the cashier told me they didn’t take the catalina’s- I understood if it was from a catalina machine but this was an Internet printed one- it was no big deal b/c I had a MQ from the paper that was exactly the same – I was just using the other b/c it expired first. Also – anyone who buys lots of cat food- my commissary had specially marked boxes of 24 ct. Fancy Feast for half off- there wasn’t a special sign or anything it was just marked with the price. I thought I was hallucinating- asked the lady in front of me that had several boxes if I was reading that correctly. I got 4 boxes and am going on my lunch hour to get several more- I have a borderline diabetic cat who can only eat Fancy Feast so that will save us tons!! Unfortunately I am out of the $1 off coupons from using them at Target this week!!

  15. Meghan

I love shopping at the commisary. My fiance is a retired Marine and we make out quite well when we go. I love the fact that they have coupons every where!! We have one cashier that we avoid completely – she is just a pain in the butt to deal with. We let other people go in front of us if she is the next available. I was just down in FL in Cocoa and did not have any issues shopping there. I guess it depends on the cashier’s attitude. Thanks for the great post and enjoy the KY!!!!!

  16. Maegen

Last time I went to the commissary with a bunch of good deals in mind, I got to the register, and they told me they don’t accept internet coupons (even though it says they are acceptable in the policy). While I love the commissary and would also love it if Collin posted these deals more often, I haven’t shopped there very much recently since I get a large portion of my coupons online. Has anyone else had a similar problem or know anything about this? Next time, I’ll definitely bring the policy with me, but I was just wondering if anyone else had this issue.

    • Ebony

Your right they are supposed to accept them, take the policy print out with you but just to prevent confrontation you can call first and tell them you have some IP’s and do they accept them, if they say no tell them you have the print out you can bring in to show them they are supposed to take them.

  17. Meredith

Thanks Collin!! I would LOVE if you were able to post commissary deals more often!! 🙂

  18. Ebony

For those having problems with IP’s I found this on a message board…

Just wanted to share with yall that DeCA has clarified that Smart Source internet printables are still being accepted…it’s specific ones that are not. Go check out DeCA’s Facebook note on it here: https://www.facebook.com/note.php?not…48610&comments

“Additionally, we frequently send notices of known counterfeit coupons to our commissaries; and they are not allowed to accept these coupons, regardless of where they came from. While our counterfeit coupon alerts frequently contain alterations of Smart Source coupons from the Internet, we have not issued a blanket alert to stop accepting ALL Smart Source coupons; it applies ONLY TO COUPONS IDENTIFIED AS COUNTERFEIT on the alerts provided. If you ever question your commissary’s refusal to accept a coupon, based on it being counterfeit, someone at your commissary should be able to show you the notice. “

  19. Dawn

Collin, cute comment you wrote on the KY. You are so funny!! Thanks for helping me be a better shopper. I wonder sometimes if you realize how many people you have blessed just by sharing what you do.

  20. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I love the Reach deal. I did that a few weeks ago as it is almost always that price and bought 5 giving me an overage of $1.25. Also Tampax (is that the pink box??) tampons are normally on sale every couple months for around $2. I always have $1 coupons which is a pretty good deal for tampons, but last month I had those $2 off coupons and they were on sale for $2.02… so I bought tampons for $0.02 a box. 10 boxes of tampons for 20 cents. My husband was so happy because he says that buying tampons is a ridiculous cost since they are normally around $4 a box elsewhere. Too bad he doesn’t understand the need. Happy shopping!!

  21. brittany ellenburg

I was wondering if anyone else has a problem with their commissary marking up things. They seem to do it according to what coupons are out or if there is a holiday.

  22. Laura

Can you stack military manufactured coupons with regular manufactured coupons?

  23. Tracy

I wish you posted more of these deals!!! I love my comm and you rock with these march ups. Thanks so much!!!!

  24. Diana

Did a bunch of these deals today in Charleston, SC (Goose Creek). I felt so proud of myself for buying the KY for the overage. I went through self checkout as normal but the machine stopped working in the middle of my transaction so they had to manually input a bunch of stuff….so this totally young kid was ringing up my KY and the coupons for it 🙂 With my toddler in tow and my big baby belly he was probably laughing at me in his head….totally worth it tho!
    Thanks Colin for this list!

  25. Lighthousefam

Yay thanks so much for posting this! After coming home from 2 weeks on leave with my hubby we are in desperate need to go grocery shopping. Please post this more!

  26. Tina

I bought 12 ky’s and had a big old 38 week pregnant belly. The young kid kept looking at it, then me, and then rang it up, just like that nine times. At the end of it I said it helps the baby come out with a straight face. You should of seen the look on his face. He didn’t know up from down at that point and it made it real easy with all the coupons I had. I almost peed myself on the way out the door cause I was laughing so hard. Get your ky ladies!!!

  27. Teresa

OMG Collin I save 91%!! Thank you so much!!

  28. Army Wife

THANK YOU SO MUCH for posting these deals from the Commissary!!!! It is so hard to find good info about deals & such for military spouses who do the majority of their grocery shopping at the Commissary & the PX. So, I sincerely thank you…. and keep ’em coming!!!! 🙂
