Walmart: New Deals + Coupon Policy Talk

As you may know, Walmart has updated their corporate coupon policy in a big way! They have stated a few things which really took me by surprise and I’m guessing surprised lots of you, too! They now reportedly will apply coupon overage to other items in your cart, “Coupons may exceed the price of the item. Change may be given or applied toward the cost of the basket purchase.”

This coupon policy sounds pretty awesome, right?! Well, on a not so positive note, I have heard from many of you who have encountered various problems trying to use coupons that exceed the price of the item. All I can say at this point is to take a deep breath, be respectful and try to educate the cashier in the nicest way possible. Make sure to print the Walmart corporate coupon policy and keep it with you at all times. When an issue arises, show the cashier the coupon policy. If they still don’t want to follow it, ask for a manager. If the manager doesn’t want to follow it, contact corporate. To me it seems pointless to have a corporate coupon policy available online, if store managers and cashiers are not willing to follow it.

With all the being said, I would love to hear how interested you would be in seeing a more extensive Walmart deals list here on Hip2Save. I tried to do this before, but because prices vary so much by location, I felt it wasn’t really worth it and I didn’t want you all to leave your local Walmart frustrated that you weren’t able to get some of the deals that I had posted.

I am not a fan of Wal-Mart, but do shop there when it works out best for me. I DO like the fact that they price-match competitor’s ads. I would definately read your matchups, if you decide to take that on.

  2. Michelle

If you have the time to post Walmarts deals that would be great. Frankly since you post the Walgreens deals and my Walgreens is SUCH a coupon friendly store I primarily shop there now. If i need grocery items I can’t get cheaply at Walgreen’s I then go to Walmarts, or the local Kroger or Aldis stores. That said, I appreciate so much what you do for all of us, and I recommend your site to everyone I know, Even strangers in the stores. Especially when the strangers as me how I save so much money, I tell them about all the hard work you do for us and how it saves me loads of money. I am an instructor at the local college and even have had a class for my students and they ALL now use your site on a daily basis, guess its time to teach the new class about Collin too. Thank you again for all you do

    • Shannon

I love Kroger too! Got HUGE deals there this week with the MEGA Sale!

  3. Shannon C

I try not to shop at Walmart. They argue about coupons, and I have been told by the cashier that the manager said that they cannot accept a coupon that makes something free. I found one nice cashier who asked the manager about my coupon, but even with a copy of the new coupon policy, they would only give me the price of the item and no overage. Free is great, don’t get me wrong, but it would be nice not to have to argue about the coupons I use every time I shop there. Target usually takes the coupons with no problem and so does Publix. I just go there if I can. Not every Walmart will be like mine though, and I know many people in other cities who depend on Walmart for lower prices.

  4. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

The first time I use a WG RR at WM I picked a young guy cashier. He scanned the coupon and it went through without any problems. No need to get a CSM or manager. The 2nd time I use it I had problems the cashier scanned the coupon it wouldn’t go through IDK why but he override the coupon to $.70 (triple coupon) so it was $2.10 suppose to take off $4. He gave the coupon and I had to go WG the next day I didn’t want to go WM and give them a hard time.

  5. Shannon

I was HOPING with the coupon policy change that you would start to show WalMart on your website. I use to do ALL of my shopping there… since using your site 2 months ago, I haven’t been in more than 1-2x. That said, I would LOVE it if you showed us how to “shop WalMart.”

  6. kellydowdy

I was at Walmart about a month or so ago and had this issue. I purchased 4 or 5 things of dental floss for $.97 and had $1.00 coupons for all of them and the cashier and CSM held up the line for 15 minutes trying to decide if the coupon was allowed bacause it scaned and gave me the dollar off instead of asking for them to key in the amount of the item instead. I looked at them finally and said “are you really gonna fuss ove 3 cents, you will get reemburessed for the amount the coupon scans”, after that they accepted my coupons but the other folks that were in line were furious when they realized what the hold up was. I worked for Walmart for 7 years and there should be no reason to not accept a coupon unless it is out of date.
I also was refused the use of a coupon that stated it was a manufactures coupon but it had a Target logo on it and they told me they could not accept any coupons associated with Target…….

    • Julieanne28

The same thing happened to me in the past. I whipped out a “real” Target coupon & showed the cashier the difference. She was like “oh ok”, she honestly didn’t know the difference and thats the saddest part of it, the cashiers have little to no training.

  7. B

I never have any trouble with Walmarts policy. One time the cashier stopped and called a manager but I told him the policy and he explained to the cashier it was fine cause they are getting reimbursed from the manufacturer. I have loved my Walmart. They special order large quanities for me. I would love more help in finding the best deals there!

  8. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I call WM Customer Service hotline they told me that alot of ppl were calling about the same thing I did about the WG RR used at WM. I asked her if I can use a catalina coupon on a $ off on my next purchase trip. She was agreed with me but then asked me to give my number and have the manager call about this issue. She also told me that it was a gimmick and that I would of got my purchase for less or free. I explained that I just wanted to bring my total down and spend less. These ppl are really nice each time I call better than the employees at my store. This is Walmart and they are suppose to help customers to save money and live better. Looks like they are not doing their job when it comes to saving money with all the coupons we give

  9. Beth

The prices never match at my Walmart so I gave up trying to get the deals.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

different walmart different prices. so like i remember one time Walmart had GV Gallon of Milk for $1.96 and another location had it for a cent more. They will not compare another WM store for that price 🙁

  10. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

OK I’m confused!!! The policy has changed again since I printed it last week and now it is saying that the “catalinas” are only used for the specific item that is printed on it. My problem is that most of the walgreens catalinas that I have do not have a specific item attached to them. The new policy also states that the checkout coupons (catalinas) can not be used to take dollars/cents off of the entire basket. So exactly how can I use them??? anyone……

    • Lisa

There are catalina coupons that print out for specific items. For example, I got one yesterday at Walgreens for $2.00 off Revlon beauty tools. That is a coupon I can use at Walmart. Other catalinas state, for example, $2.00 off your next shopping order. Walmart’s new policy states they won’t take those. I hope that helps!

  11. Lori

No, I would not. They are trying to get business from local stores, even matching ads, but without local stores there would be no matching ads, all the while refusing to honor their own policy with pictures, not the one I printed out. Convenient not to deliver on promises while people are back in your stores, while local stores, smaller, can go bankrup and without local stores with Qs, walmart would be back to their every day high prices business. Walmart only changed their policy because of 6 quarters of down sales, a first, and figured the world of blogs would get them publicity. Not fair.

  12. brianne

I would love to see Wal-Mart match-ups. I stopped shopping at Walgreens because of too many problems. If you don’t end up doing the Wal-Mart match-ups I won’t be heart broken either, I just appreciate the work you do already. So, thank you for all you do!

  13. Liz

My walmart’s tea was $2.25, I was really hoping to find it for $1.10! On the plus side, they took my walgreens dial soap coupon without any issues. I’m loving their new coupon policy!

  14. Linda C.

Curious to see just how many folks have issues with the Walgreen’s Register Rewards where there isn’t a specified product to match against the $$ off. I tried at mine and showed them the coupon policy and they refused indicating that it was a “dollars off then entire basket” catalina. Any others have this issue at their WM?

    • Holly

They just changed their policy two days ago to exclude the $ off $$ purchase catalinas. It’s really a shame, since I was planning to shop at Walgreen’s more often just so I could use the RR at Walmart.

  15. Shawne K.

I would love to see more Wal-Mart deals! I am not a huge fan of Wal-Mart, but in my small town the choices are limited. This week I used a Walgreen’s Catalina for the first time at Wal-Mart and I didn’t have any problems. I was very excited, because I had $3.50 off Gillette deodorant (Catalina) which I paired with the buy Gillette deodorant get a free body wash. So I paid less than .50 for each! Thanks Collin for all your hard work.

  16. Desirae

I shop at Walmart a lot but I have been annoyed by how they do coupons. The manager at my store has the cashiers price adjust a coupon if it is more then the item. When the new Walmart coupon policy came out I called the store and spoke with them about it. They said that they still would not allow overage on the coupons.
So I called Walmart Headquarters. 🙂 They lady I spoke with emailed the store manager.. she put in what the coupon policy stated… and now the store manager allows overage on coupons.

So if you manager doesnt follow call headquarters and im sure things will change.

  17. Holly

I think it’d be nice if you did a Walmart match-up, but it isn’t necessary. I would’ve jumped for joy if you did the match-ups while Walmart was still accepting RR, but it seems like they changed their coupon policy two days ago to exclude them.

  18. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I would LOVE it if you would post the walmart deals!! some may vary with different regions/stores, so readers just need to keep that in mind.

  19. Colleen

Collin you do a great job posting deals, but personally I don’t waste my time with Walmart…I consider that store ‘off limits’..I feel that corporation has many bad policies unrelated to couponing and the few times I did shop there in the past have been a bad experience. So, I say don’t waste your time with Walmart, but I can appreciate that many others feel differently, and that is OK too.

  20. CHRISTINA

Hold up applying the brakes!!! Wal-Mart covered themselves on the bottom by stating only one coupon per item. So, so much for the better savings Walgreens and Rite aid take multiple coupons making the items free a lot of the time..Just had to throw that in there 🙂 Thanks Collin for everything you do!!!

  21. rachelvw

I tried it today at Walmart. The exedrin was $4.47!! They didn’t have the McCormick taco seasoning. Either my Walmart’s prices are higher or the coupon wasn’t in my insert. I doubt it’s worth your time. I’m having huge success at Rite Aid & CVS. If only a Walgreens would come to town!

  22. Michelle

I would love a Walmart match up!

  23. css03

I don’t shop much at Walmart, but decided to try it today. The cashier wouldn’t accept the Scotch Brite coupon because I wasn’t buying what was pictured, I pointed out the wording, but she handed me a little slip of paper that printed out from the register when she scanned the coupon stating that the coupon and item didn’t match (first time I ever had that happen), she then tried to tell me the same for the Revlon coupon, when the total came up – $0.22, she turned on her light. Another cashier asked if she could help, I started to explain and my cashier put her hand up to me to be quiet. Finally CM came over after, I pointed out the policy, he checked with the manager and eventually handed me the 22c and apologized. Not sure it was worth it, but it was a matter of principle for me today.

  24. Tara

Our Walmart has been a challenge, but I went through the chain of command using 1-800-Walmart and we are now doing better. Check out our story at savingmoney-101.blogspot.com Best wishes to you all at your Walmarts!

  25. Tabitha

I wouldn’t waste your time on posting Walmart deals because the price differs way too much in each area. I have 4 within 20 min of my house in Western PA and they all have different pricing on the same items. It is frustrating to see a good deal on here and then go to the store just to see it at a way different price. I would say stick to the places like Walgreens and Rite Aid that seem to be more similar in their pricing. Thanks for all your hard work.

  26. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Hi, just wanted to thank you for all your hard work! Went to Walmart today and I was amazed at the deals I got since the new coupon policy. Spent 45.00 on grocerys and paid 5.54!! I will be going to Walmart more often. I also got the last Swiffer duster / magazine deal free and with 3 something in overage.

  27. Q

I love Wal-Marts new policy and would love for you to feature Wal-Mart more. I have had great success with the new policy. I was able to use 39 of the $3/1 Purex coupons on the travel size 3-N-1 sheets and used the overage to get the pavers for my patio for $1.76 out of pocket! Plus the bonus of 78 loads of laundry for free!!!

    • Liz

Wow, thats awesome! I really wanted to get one of the 3 in 1 detergents but they were all sold out.

  28. angiefettig

    Do Walgreens RR expire?

    • Lisa

Yes, Walgreens RR’s expire 2 weeks from the day you get them. And, in order to redeem one, your transaction must include at least one item for which you do not have a manufacturers coupon. In addition, the transaction total before the RR is scanned, must be more than the amount of the RR without the sales tax added. Sound confusing? It is! But, once you get the hang of it, it gets easier. In fact, putting together the transactions is a challenge I enjoy. You just have to decide if it’s worth it for you.

      • angiefettig

That’s super helpful. Thanks for the info.

  29. Brandy

Thanks Collin, for all of your hard work…but I’m not voting for Wal-Mart matchups. You spend enough time on this blog with everything else! I appreciate the match-ups that you currently provide and if I need to shop at Wal-Mart (heaven forbid!) I will search for the best deals myself. Thanks again!

  30. melissa

Had a problem today with overage. After 20mins of management I got the revlon overage, but they would not take the string cheese coupons 🙁 I still got a $57 bill down to 58cents though! (the cashier was so angry) Thank you for this site!

  31. Angelique

I would love to see Walmart deals!

  32. MWilliams987

What coupon is everyone using for the McCormick taco seasoning??

    • INDYMOM

I’m thinking its the coupon that says:

$1 off any McCormicks SPICE, HERBS, EXTRACT, OR COLOR..
Unfortunatly, it does not say seasonings so I don’t think you are supposed to be using them on the seasoning packs though.

      • MWilliams987

That’s what I thought, but I’m with you. I don’t think that coupon is meant for the taco seasoning. Thanks for your help!

        • Jennifer

I agree, I didn’t try this McCormick deal because of the wording on the coupon. I was already saving over $100 in coupons so I certainly didn’t want to do anything to rock the boat.

  33. FrugalDarling

Just wanted to mention that I went to print the new Walmart coupon policy for the first time today and it seems they’ve changed some of the wording from the original “new coupon policy” update? Did anyone notice that? If you printed it when it first came out, you might want to print a new one. It seems to have more detailed explanations and more professional wording than the original “overage” update policy.

Also, it seems from the wording in the current policy that Register Rewards would NOT be accepted since they will not accept “Check Out” or “Catalina” coupons for Dollars/Cents off the entire basket purchase. But that’s just my take on it?

I went to Walmart for the first time today since the policy update, coupon policy in hand (and ready for a fight), and was able to get 4 Gain 40 ct. sheets @ $1.87 each, used the $3 off coupons, and no questions whatsoever from the cashier. Not sure if this was a result of policy change, or just good cashier profiling, but I was excited. We used the overage to pay for some home repair products. Yah! 😀

  34. Yvette

Frigo cheese coupon $1/1 is no longer available 🙁

  35. happy1038

I WOULD LOVE for you to include deals at Walmart since I get to intimidated by the store sometimes and it would be nice to know where to focus my efforts based upon the deals you would potentially include every week. I am in Indiana and not far from North Caralina so hopefully your deals would match up to my state closely too 🙂

  36. Angie

THe Walmart in Joliet, IL is very coupon and price match friendly and they take expired coupons up to 14 days past the date and also allow overage no questions asked. I was wondering, does anyone know if Walmart will take the Target printable “web” coupons? If they do will they stack these coupons with manufacturer coupons. Thanks so much!

    • amy r.

YES!! Wal-Mart will stack manufacturer coupons with store coupons either from a flyer or the web. I have never had a problem using target coupons at WalMart.

      • Lisa

The new coupon policy states, “Only one coupon per item”, so you may no longer be able to stack them.

  37. Jennifer

I’d like to get the purex sheets (trial size). Can anyone tell me where they have found them in the store? Thanks!

    • Elizabeth

Our store had them in the travel sized section by the toothpastes and mouthwashes. Well, they had the tag where they should have been. By the time I got to them they were sold out.

      • Jennifer

Thanks so much! I did find them in the trial section and was able to snag a few.

        • Cheryl

I love the trial size section last week i snaged about 70 FREE COUPONS ON POLIGRIP TRIAL SIZE COUPONS They dont run out until May That may not excite some one else but for me WHOOOOOOO>>>>> {Our local Broookshire Broothers has a free paper bin I go alot….

      • Jennifer
  38. Denise Laumann

The old saying misery loves company holds true. I have had a number of RUDE experiences in the passed 2 weeks at Walmart. I actually had a cashier refuse to wait on me after she was told that it was policy to accept my coupons and use the overage for the rest of my cart. I will say the manager did apologize but I still called corporate, if you are going to have a job in customer service you must learn to give service to your cutomers and not make them feel descriminated for using coupons and being a good shopper. Hang in there don’t let them win.

  39. Beth w

I tried to do the Frigo Cheese Heads single cheese snacks deal today and the cashier wouldn’t take the coupon because it says $1 off one “package”. She said “that’s just crazy” when I said my friend used this coupon. Oh well I guess.

    • Dianne

I tried to use the Frigo coupon today and was told it was on the packages of cheese as she pointed to the picture. I told her this is a package, it doesn’t say excludes singles neither does it say for 6 ct or higher or any words except “ANY PACKAGE”. I guess the question is what is “is” and what is a “package” ? I’m starting to hate Wal-Mart again.

  40. Lacey Robert

Love the Walmart list!! Just got some great deals on dog treats and some other things. Prices were a little different but just by a few cents, so close enough. Please do it again.

  41. Tille

Go top Publix to get your Marrobone’s….50 per bag with your 2.00 off coupon!

  42. Karena

Does anyone have any of the $3 off Gain Fabric Softener coupons left? I had 3 and wasn’t able to use them because all of the stores I tried were out. I finally found a Walmart (that is kind of out of my way) that has them in stock and of course, I’ve lost the coupons. I made my list to go to Walmart this morning and they are nowhere to be found in this house. If anyone would like to help, here is my email address: kjmorrison80@yahoo.com. Thank you!

  43. THERESIA

will they take coupons that say target instead of manufacture coupon

    • joy

I highly doubt it since that would be considered a competitor coupon and they don’t take those. Only manufacture. Hope that helps 🙂

  44. liana

WAL-MART IS HORRIBLE WITH PEOPLE WHO ARE USING COUPONS! I DON’T SHOP THERE. TARGET IS BETTER!

  45. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

    Collin,

If you’re up to posting Wal-mart I’m interested in seeing what the sales are. I shop Wal-mart so it’ll be nice to know what’s on sale or before going.

  46. joy

Has anyone been able to print the huggies flushable wipes?! I keep logging on and clicking the link to “get coupon” but it just keeps taking me in circles 🙁

    • Shelly T.

I am having the same problem. I just sent them an email asking them about it. I used the contact us link at the bottom of their page. HTH
