Coffee With Collin: Let's Talk Fashion
This Hip2Save.com Deal was hand-posted on Monday, March 21st, 2011 at 10:37 am.
This week’s Coffee with Collin is one of my favorites thus far as I am chatting about one of my most beloved topics. No, it’s not couponing per se (although that is at the top of my favorites list) and no, it’s not food (again at the top of my favorites list)…it’s fashion, jewelry and shoes!! Yep, this week’s episode gives you a glimpse into where I find my favorite outfits and accessories.
Enjoy!

Lisa says:
I’m so jealous! I bought the exact shirt & scarf at K Mart for my daughter & paid the $16.00.
As for jewelry, I love shopping Kohls clearance.
Diane says:
I need HELP from the designer jean experts! I have a groupon good towards one of the following brands: J Brand, 7 for All Mankind, Diesel, Rock & Republic, William Rast, Current/Elliot Jeans, Chip and Pepper, Laguna Beach, Cult of Individuality, or Anoname.
Which brand do you think would be good for a plus size woman? I’ve never bought any of these brands and feel a bit intimidated!
Thanks for your help!!!!!!!!
Debi says:
Where I live (in Utah) we have a lot of “denim” stores. House of Denim is one and there are few others I see. These are usually independant super small stores. The point is that they sell all kinds of higher end brands. So you could try some on and see what you like. Also if you have a Maurice’s around you (they are typically in smaller town plaza malls) they sell Rock and Republic and a few other higher end brands (in addition to their own lable) so you could try stuff on before buying. ALSO search your area for Consignment stores and see what brands they have. Brands have diferent ‘cuts’ but it may give you an idea. Good Luck!
KATSY says:
LOVE Maurice’s!! You can order online too!? Cato has good clearance and cute shoes SOMETIMES
RWJ1018 says:
I personally own a few of these different brands! I would say your best bet is to go to a store and start trying own. The majority of these brands come in all different cuts and designs! I have confidence that you will find something you love!

I love macys and kohls, especially macys for the hubby! Most of the time on the clearance racks the price is actually lower thAn the ticketed price plus with a savings pass it end up being 80+% off! Also when they had their denim sale all the American rag jeans were ringing up at $9.80 with the $10 back they were free! Kohls is great too for men, got some dockers there the other day for like $5 and alot of the time they will have clothes b1g, so to be corny. We always buy matching jackets! With their shopping pass very cheap !

Recently, this fashion blog I read did a post on an online discount store. I compare it to Ross & TJ Maxx, it can be a lot of work to sort through but you can get some awesome deals (plus you get to sort from the comfort of your home). I have not bought anything from them yet, but I will say I put in an order for a dress and they emailed me the next day saying the dress was not of good enough quality to sell. I appreciated their honesty. Happy Shopping All!
http://www.mjrsales.com/
- PS – right now they are offering $2 flat rate shipping, 25% off pants and the blog I read says when they mention “Famous Catalog”, its Victoria Secret. Just sharing what I have read.
Tara says:
I had never heard of this website. Well after reading your post I stayed up way too late last night browsing the deals. Ordered a pair of “famous catalog” jeans and a Limited necklace all for $20! I can’t wait to get them!
Thanks for mentioning this! I will definitely be checking it out from time to time.

I would like to see a video on how you organize all this jewlery.
Hilary T says:
Hey,
A friend makes her own really cool, really green jewelry organizer that hangs on the wall. Uses recycled picture frame, cork board and not sure what else. I will post after I get her feedback.
Sarah says:
Would love to see a video on this too! You are so small and fit. Thanks for the cute video.

Gabriel Brothers in the east coast is THE BEST discount store EVER!! Not even kidding. It is similar to TJ MAX but SOO much cheaper! They have clearance prices as their normal prices! There are tips to shopping at this store and if you are interested, I can let you know. My Mom and I have been shopping at this chain since the first one opened in Pittsburgh like 30 years ago!! Love them!
Yvonne says:
I’ m not sure if anyone posted this or not, but I recently discovered CLOTHES MENTOR!!! Similar to Platos Closet in that it is a consignment shop- woman’ clothes only. Wow! They only accept clothes that are less than 2 years old, must be like new and current fashion-wise. I scored some amazing items including Calvin Klein jeans and items from Ann Taylor. They carry shoes and accessories. They also buy your unwanted clothes and will pay you CASH on the spot! There are stores in about 20 states.
Krista says:
One of the best places I find to get great deals on anything is through all the awesome comments readers leave on this blog and others! What a wealth of valuable information! Thanks so much to everyone here who has commented as well as Collin. I hate clothing shopping, but have a bit of a renewed inspiration after reading all this and watching the video.
Amy says:
I was wondering if you can ever chat about purchasing furniture and/or a new car? Thanks!

You have to check out this video on car buying-
not NEW- just slightly used- we did it twice!
I LOVE MY PAID FOR NOT SO NEW T&C VAN!!

Roxanne says:
This is one of my favorite subjects. I love shopping, I love fashion. But all my friends and all the people I get to meet will learn that I am a bit of a bargain queen. I actually call myself cheap
but someone said “you’re frugal, not cheap”. I could probably do that for a living. Help people find awesome outfits for less.
I wanna share with you ladies some of the deals I scored in the last months and some of my favorite stores. Although the mall might not be the best place for bargain shopping, you can find amazing deals sometimes. Mostly at the end of the season. We had a Max Rave store in one of the malls here and apparently they weren’t doing too good, so they decided to close their stores. They had everything on sale 40-60-75% off and sometimes even more than that. I got a nice black dress for $4, a pair of jeans (that are now my all time favorite pair) for $5, a sequin belt for less than $2, a nice hobo bag for $2.25, a floral dress for $3, several tops for $2-3 each. Not everything they had was great quality, but if you got patience and time, you can find nice items.
Then, right before Christmas, Charlotte Russe had those 40% off one item coupons. Plus they had all winter shoes on clearance. I got 2 really nice pairs of boots (in 2 different shopping sessions) for $12 each. Everybody who was behind me in line was like ‘wow, that is such a great deal’.
There are also other stores in the mall where I got good deals. Wet Seal had everything 50% off on Black Friday, so I got a couple of cute things quite cheap. There is another store called Rainbow. I don’t like most of their clothes or the quality, but I always take my time and try to find treasures. I got a really beautiful dress with roses, really great for a party for $11.
I also love H&M. They have really cute things, but no matter how much I love them, can’t really pay full retail price. So whenever they got clearance stuff, I find cute things. I got several beautiful dresses for $10 each.
Old Navy is another favorite, mostly because they accept coupons. I would never pay full price, just because they have sales constantly and you just gotta wait until your favorite item is on sale. And of course use a coupon
And when they have stuff on clearance or at the end of season, when it’s 50-75% off clearance, you can get good deals. I got a skirt for $4, an awesome coat for around $25 and a ton of clothes for my husband – $3-4 t-shirts, $5 shorts etc.
I used to find cute things at Walmart, in their clearance section, but not that much anymore.
If it’s in the middle of the season and I don’t wanna pay full price, I just go to thrift stores. I avoided them for a while since I don’t really like wearing other people’s clothes, but lately I found really awesome clothes, in perfect shape. I got 2 blazers, a sweater, a blouse and a pair of cargo pants for $12. They are all really cute.
Plato’s Closet has good things too, but I think they’re a little bit pricey for “old” clothes. I don’t care that much for designer stuff, so I prefer thrift stores.
As for shoes, I am a size 5
) so you can imagine how hard it is to find my size. I ordered some booties from Urban Original and I’m pretty happy with them. Around $25 and I got free shipping. They have coupons all the time and really cute things. On my one and only trip to Atlanta, I found a nice shoe store (in underground Atlanta) with lots of cute shoes. I don’t know what was the deal with them. They even had Steve Madden shoes for $40-50. I was digging through a box with clearance stuff (that kinda looked like junk, to be honest) and found the cutest pair of fuchsia patent shoes for $5. I have to tell you that wherever I go, there is at least one person who will admire them. Sometimes it’s even a man
)) I’m really proud of them.
Well, I think I already wrote too much and I don’t know if anyone will have the patience to read it. But if you do, and I can help you with any tips and tricks, let me know
Collin, that was an awesome post. You should do it more often!
Mary S. says:
Ok, this may get a little long but I LOVE shopping and have always prided myself on getting good deals. To the point where I have had friends/family members ask me to teach them how to stretch their clothing dollars further.
For shoes, I think DSW is one of the best places to go. If you sign up for their emails and rewards program you will often get coupons and all of the shoes are already discounted from their regular retail price. If you go to their clearance rack you can find shoes marked down 80% or more from their retail price. If you then have a coupon it gets even better. For your birthday they will send you a $5 off any purchase of $5 or more and I have been able to get a pair of sandal or some socks for just pennies using that coupon in the past.
For jewelry I will pick up clearance rack finds at Target. For a few nicer pieces I also find a lot of nice stuff on Etsy. Some of it can get a little pricey but I love finding reasonably priced, one of a kind pieces. I also love picking up jewelry at thrift stores or yard sales.
For clothes I shop places like Target but really anywhere with a clearance rack works. Even if you think its a more expensive store like Banana Republic or Nordstrom’s don’t rule it out. I have gotten tops off the clearance rack in both places for $5 or less. With Nordstrom’s I will shop in their BP (juniors) department. The clothes tend to be cheaper and the clearance racks are generally not as picked over as the ones in the other areas of the store. As you are looking if a sales person approaches you be friendly, sometimes they will tell you about a sale or a coupon they have.
If you have a coupon for a mall store check and see if you can use it on clearance items or accessories. If you can you can usually get a pretty good deal. If it is a coupon that requires you to spend a certain amount see if you can go shopping with a friend. If you combine your purchases into one transaction you may meet the minimum requirement and then you can split the discount.
Check out if you have any consignment stores near you. My tip is to think of the wealthiest neighborhood near you and then see if there are any consignment or thrift stores in that area. It doesn’t always work out but generally if it is a more affluent area the quality of clothing consigned or donated is a little bit higher. I have found items with the tags still on them marked down 90%.
My biggest tip though for stretching your dollars further is to try on the item and think about it before you buy. If you find a really great deal on a top but it fits funny or you have nothing to wear it with, it is not a good buy.
I tend to splurge in a couple of areas as well. With some items I really do find it is better for me to pay for quality. I buy premium denim and will also spend money on a few really good pairs of shoes and a couple good jackets. These things tend to last me a long time and I think paying for quality works out to be a better deal over time. Some people may cringe when I say I spent $175 on a pair of brown leather boots (and they were even on clearance at the time!) but I have had those boots for over 5 years now and I still get compliments on them almost every time I wear them. And mixing a few higher end items with some cheaper finds elevates the whole look. In fact one of my favorite outfits involves a tank top I bought off the Wal-Mart clearance rack paired with a Marc Jacobs blazer I got on sale at Bloomingdales. I also try to take really good care of the items I have, I will take my shoes to the cobbler to get them re-soled and I will mend items or sew a button back on myself.
Kelly says:
I love to shop at Kohl’s. They have great clearance sections, too, all over the store and I usually always have a coupon for either 15, 20, or 30% off that you can use on clearance items, too!!
Jaden says:
My favorite place for shoes is definitely Shoes.com!! Shipping is always free, and if you sign up for their emails, they will send out 20-25% additional off the clearance codes pretty frequently… and they carry really good brand names. I usually get both my and my husband’s new sneakers from here for under $20 for brand names… can’t beat that with a stick!
lisa says:
I also like high-quality jeans, Lucky is my favorite brand. I still have a hard time paying the high prices so after trying them on to know what size and style fits best, I now buy them slightly used on e-bay for $20-30 a pair. These jeans are higher quality anyway so the fact that they are used doesn’t bother me, I still get lots of life out of them and end up saving $70-80!
RWJ1018 says:
I also love my designer demin. Lucky jeans typically go on sale @ 50% off twice a year both in store and online. Keep an eye out!
I can always find a good excuse to pay full price for demin or shoes. They just last that much longer for me. I love to shop at Piperlime (which is owned by Gap). They have alot of designer items and do offer coupons. They also have awesome clearance items at the end of every season. Piperlime offers free shipping and free returns on every single order which is a huge bonus.
I am a very small size jean, so I always like to try on my jeans prior to purchase. I typically head to the nearest Bloomies or Neimans and try on jeans that I like, snap a photo of the tag if I like them, and come home and do a google search to find the cheapest price.
steph says:
My favorite stores to get clothing deals at are: Kohl’s, Target, and The Gap Outlet. For Kohl’s I will wait until the items are 80-90% off and I will stack that with my 15%, 20%, or 30% off coupons (for being a card-holder) and score some amazing deals! I like Kohl’s mainly because they discount their stuff a lot quicker than other stores, so like in January (or late December after Christmas) most winter clothing is already 70-80% off, and after July 4th, the summer styles are 70-80%, so you are still by “in-season” but not when it first comes out. I too, like Collin, wait for stuff at Target to get down to 75% off, and I have gotten amazing deals on clothing and shoes. I also love The Gap Outlet, I have been able to get 2 items for under $16! My favorite was a trench coat and a pair of pants for $16 total! (I had a buy one get one free coupon).
I would also agree with Collin to just look at the clearance section in stores, and I totally agree with you also, to try things on, even if they don’t look cute on the hanger, you will be surprised what they look like on you!
I do have a clothing area I splurge on too–dresses, although sometimes I do get a great deal, I still splurge ever so often, because dresses are one of the most difficult things to find to fit me “perfectly” and when they do, I will buy them! My favorite stores for dresses are Bass, Ann Taylor Loft, and Kohls.
As for Shoes, I do well at Kohl’s and Target, as well as JC Penney online only.

I love this site for jewelry: http://www.silverjewelryclub.com/ I bought so much from them and nothing has ever turned green either! nice stuff!
Michelle Y. says:
I know you are tiny. But what about plus size bargain shopping?? Any suggestions/ideas??
Thanks, love your website.
Ashley says:
Hi Michelle,
I agree! I’m considered “plus size”, and sometimes it is difficult to find clothes for myself that look “cute”. Most are really older women type clothes, and it really frustrates me! I’d love tips from anyone who is plus size, as well!
Amy says:
Old Navy online! They don’t have much plus size merchandise in stores, but they have an entire section of it online, and a lot of it is REALLY cute! HTH.
frannie says:
Woman Within has a lot of bargain priced clothes for plus sizes.

Hey, Collin! One of the great things about couponing and bargain shopping is having money for what you love, or what you have a goal for: a vacation, a stereo, a car, designer denim–whatever! You earned it!
Rainey says:
I love watches and have a zillion of them LOL
Amy says:
Amazon, Old Navy and Target are my big stores.
I recently got a $45 long belted black jacket at Old Navy for less than $10!
Jennifer says:
I find my Gap Jeans at Good Will! I love good Will! Once I got a $60 toy truck for $3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Marla says:
I was thrilled to see your link to Ten Thousand Villages!! They are a fabulous fair trade company. When you buy from them, you can feel assured that your money is helping to support an artisan in another country.
Amy says:
I love clothes. I really like to shop at Goodwill. They actually get brand new items from Target I went last Saturday and bought 2 brand new sundresses, 3 new tank tops,2 pair of longer shorts to wear to work,a blue jean vest and a sundress for my daughter, all for $50.00. I love the Kohls clearance racks for clothes and jewelery. Other good places for cheap jewelery are Charlotte Rue and Rue 21. Macys clearance racks are good for clthes and jewelery also.In the past I bought a leather jacket at Kohls that was orginally $100.00 for $10.00. I love the thrill of the hunt for really good prices!
Joy says:
These posts are making me want to give designer denim a try! I’ve always had issues with jeans so I tend to be a trouser type pants person. Love METRO pants from Dockers. I shop a lot at a Chico’s near my house but I always go to the sale rack first and always use a coupon in one way or another. They have some convertible cargo pants that are so comfy!
Olga says:
I love thrift store shopping too! And don’t get me wrong – I’m not a slob! That’s why it took me so long to take to the idea of finding clothes there. I was always thinking, “Who knows what kind of slob used to wear them!” But then I found one great brand-new thing (with tags!), then another, and then I realized that thrift stores are a Klondike for high quality great looking finds! And you know what? The truth is that if the thing seems to be in a good condition, the slob that used to wear it probably wasn’t too bad.
Of course you have to know all the tricks to thrift-store shopping, like what to check etc. I could write an article about it but don’t want to bore anyone. And it does take time to find a diamond in the rough. But what you can find in a thrift store, you might never find elsewhere, even for its full price, simply because it could be vintage or just brought by someone from Europe! No Walmart or Target bargains ever lived up to those standards! Though yes, I have found some OK stuff on clearance there. Still nothing like my thrift store finds!
Here are a couple examples. By the way, Collin, you might be interested in this! I found a brand new pair of jeans in Savers, the tags were still on and the retail price was $258! I paid $8! Total savings? Do the math! I have no idea about this brand – some William B. But I’m not a great believer in brands in general (except for Dr.Martens and Abercrombie and Fitch), I’m a believer in great fit and quality. And I can tell you that the quality of these jeans is exceptional! Plus they have a genuine suede top!
The second example. Recently in Goodwill I found a new Caslon leather jacket for $6! My guess is, the person who priced it had no clue what he/she was doing because even in Goodwill such stuff is usually way more expensive! And the leather is soft and thin like a baby’s skin! The jacket didn’t have any tags but I’m pretty sure it had never been worn because I know how such fine leather wears – a couple outings and you can tell the difference. Plus the lining always gives is out, especially on the underarms.
And what I don’t find in thrift stores, I find in Ross and Marshal’s. Example – a few pairs of Doc.Martens shoes and boots for around $20 each! I can’t get enough of those!
Kaitlyn says:
All I have to say is YOUR A JUNIOR’S SIZE EXTRA SMALL!?!!?
haha
I have not read all the comments but out of all my ideas this is the one I think may not be listed. Other than discount stores (Target, Walmart), sale stores (Kohl’s) and consignment stores one of my biggest deals of the years is always at the Banana Republic and Gap outlet stores. When you combine a sale with a coupon you can get HUGE savings for high quality clothings. Back around the Veteran’s Day sale maybe they had a high value coupon (I can’t remember exactly but I think it was 30% off entire purchase! My husband just started a new job so he needed all new work clothes… dress pants, button up shirts ect. Well, the entire store was pretty much 40-60+% off… paired with the coupon for around $325 (I wish I had the exact numbers) he got at least 6 pairs of shirts, 4 pairs of pants, 10 socks, jeans, 5 t-shirts, and I got a pair of jeans, a sweater, earrings and we both a got a belt. The shirts along were originally around $60-$80 a piece. I would never pay that price regulary. He works 60 hours a week (restaurant business) so his clothes gets a beating. He swears by Banana clothing since it lasts forever. We don’t dry clean anything either, everything gets washed and dryed at home.
April says:
Great video thanks for the tips. I love to hit the yard sales on base for cute clothes (many times at 25 cents a piece). It seems like if you go to base housing you can find 10-15 yard sales all in one concentrated area and many of them have a variety of clothing for sale (even more so if you are looking for childrens clothing).
HeatherinSC says:
I have to admit I am somewhat of a denim snob, too. I get great deals on designer jeans on ebay. I hardly ever pay retail for clothes. I loved this segment!

a really good website that has cheap cute jewelry is http://www.eleventhgorgeous.com/. Its a small website but they have some good stuff and you can find earnings for like 2.80.

a way to save big on you designer jeans is to shop neiman marcus last call stores or the nordstrom rack! Ive also came across lucky, jessica simpson and seven jeans at tjmaxx! I love a good deal, but sometimes i find myself buying stuff thats marked down dirt cheap that i never wear!!! thanks collin for all the shopping tips! your outfits were very cute!

I have to shop a lot with teen girls. The also buy a lot of the jewelry from Target and Walmart. Not to long ago we ordered some awesome jewelry on Kohls on line store. My girls will shop any consignment store as long as it looks in style, excellent condition is cute. Someone actually commented to them recently that they must be secretly rich or something since they have so much nice clothes. My daughter always brags how much she saves. Actually in this area, for teens, it is becoming hip to save if your a teen! My daughter’s biggest find recently was a splurge at Plato’s closet/ I bought her a very nice GAP black jacket for her birthday. I don’t think whoever owned it wore it much and since we are in Florida that is probably true (although we do need jackets still). Well, I paid $30 (felt it was a little high for consignment but she LOVED it and so new looking). Later that night I found the same jacket on the web for $298! I think it was a good deal after all. Commenting again on teens…all my kids friend’s have got into the act of couponing for movies, eating out, etc. They always stop by my house first before they all go out to see if there is any coupons for where they are going and they all use point/saver cards. Glad it is hip to save with teens right now!
Emily says:
I totally Goodwill it!! It’s the thrill of the hunt! For example, today I got a American Eagle long cardigan, and a bright green Mossimo swimsuit coverup (BOTH styles that are current and can be found in stores) for 5.35 total. I get an additional 10% using my college I.D.! Not to mention a brand new large Tonka dump trunk for my friend’s son for 90 cents! Can’t beat that!!
Amy says:
I love the Goodwill too! Great finds and it really is fun to search!

My favorite site for jewelry is shopthelook.net. It is amazing and always has great online codes. I also love rummage sales and thrift stores. I do a clothes swap with some girlfriends every few months, so FREE designer stuff. i could talk all day on this subject…thanks for another great video.

Collin…loved your video and I’m sure you have tons of ideas. But after watching yesterday I was driving and had these video ideas:
* pets (saving on food, meds, care, etc)
* Credit card rewards (which cards rewards — cash, points, are best for those who put all their purchases on a card and then pay it off of course)
* Store customer rewards programs — which are most generous…
* Travel — best online site for booking, hotel frequent stay programs, etc.
So these topics are some that you might be able to share info and readers could share too.
So cool that the 12 yr. old called you out!

I love love love Rugged warehouse. They usually sell last season’s clothes, but who cares right? I just bought an express zebra print bikini for $8. ($4 for the top and $4 for the bottom). These are usually around $60! I also bought a couple express sweaters for 10. I remember buying the same sweater a few months prior for $25 thinking it was a good deal since it was originally $50.
I am also obsessed with ebay. I bought a slightly used (it looks brand new) raincoat from lands end (usually $80) for just 10 bucks plus 5 shipping!
also, the music in the transition scenes kind of sounds like an adult movie… must be inspired by all that K-Y

Oh Ive heard about this store when i lived in NC! Too bad in in TX now and there’s no locations here!

I love to shop at Jcpenneys. They have good clearance deals and coupons. If you have there credit card they send out better coupons I have got several almost free things with $10 off of $10 or more coupons they send out ( 2 pair leggings for me, dress and shirt for DD) This past weekend I got me and my daughter new Easter dresses and my husband 2 pair of work jeans there for $75.00! Full price for it all would have been $180.00!
Holly says:
Where did you get the two cute sweaters that were $4.99???

If you can believe it… Kmart!
They actually have some cute clothes if you take the time to browse around.

WAHOO!! I read fashion talk, and had to put down my US Weekly and watch! Loved the video and all the great ideas. Aside from a lot of the stores you mentioned, (that I love to find great deals at), I shop frequently at Nordstrom Rack. You can find some great deals there, especially in the clearance section. They also sometimes have “denim events” that are sooo much fun to go to. I get there before the store opens at 8:00 AM and there is usually already a line, but they have high end denim (TR, Paige, Seven, Citizens, WR,) at discounted prices. Lower than there already discounted prices. I usually end up spending around 40.00 for a pair of designer jeans. THey are on racks right when you walk in the door, by size, and normally they will only let you take 3 at a time. Anyways, it is fun and girls will start trading jeans in the dressing room trying to find that “perfect pair”! Love NOrdstrom Rack for cute tops too.

ROSS is the place to save here in Southern California. I have found the best selection as soon as they open Monday through Thursday only. Forget the weekend, by then its all gone!

I am also a huge denim snob. That does not mean that I didn’t snag some of those FREE jeans at Target recently, but I do prefer to wear higher end jeans. I’ve found that they hold up a lot better than some of my lower end jeans and I end up getting my money’s worth better that way. I recently snagged a pair of Buffalo David Bitton Gitane jeans from Nomorerack.com for $7 shipped, though, so it IS possible to get a sweet deal on higher end denim!
Devon says:

Designer Norma Kamali at Walmart is really nice for the price. She offers a lot more online. NYC has 70 off tons of stuff right now and they have a deal of the day. Colin, I’d love to share some decor tips and deals with you if you are ever interested. I have a few posted on my sidebar right now.

Has anyone tried Plato’s Closet… I buy sooo many of my clothes there, mostly because I can find very high end brands like Banana Republic, Coach, Lacosse, BCBG, Seven, and other for usually under $10!!!! I got most with the original tags on them as being marked down from $80 to $130!!
