(The Thornton Family Home in Calhoun County, AL)

As we mentioned yesterday, we will be embarking on the Hip2Help Tour in early July and are planning to sponsor between 1-3 families in 4 different communities along the way. Thanks to the help of Hip2Save reader/volunteer Tina in Calhoun County, Alabama, we are honored to introduce another one of our sponsored families, the Thornton Family. The Thornton Family consists of dad, mom, boy (age 11) and girl (age 15 who will also be having surgery on June 8th). As you can see from the picture above, the Thornton’s home was partially destroyed, including the living and kitchen areas.

If you want to help us support this family through donations, here is what is needed:

*Boy Needs (Age 11): Clothing (Size 32 pants/shorts, Men’s size medium shirt, & size 9 1/2 shoe…he LOVES sneakers!)

*Girl Needs (Age 15): Clothing (Size 2 shorts/pants, Small size for tops, & Size 7 shoe)

* In addition to clothing and shoes, the family could use gift cards to Lowes and Walmart to help with expenses for repairing their home.

Please mail donations for the Thornton Family to either of the following addresses:

Note: If your donated items are not immediately needed by the family, they will be stored in either of these locations until we arrive in July.

These posts make me so sad, yet so joyful at the same time because I know the Hip2Save family is going to take good care of these families.

Just a thought, though…. after we’ve “met” all the families, will there be one place where we can go to see them all listed out with all their needs, rather than having to scroll through a month’s worth of posts to find which address to send which items to? Maybe a Hip2Help tab or something?

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

There is a Hip2Help Tab on the right side of the website. If you click it, it pulls up each county and you can click each county to get a detail of each county!

    • Collin

      Hi Lisa!

You can easily access all information about the Hip2Help Tour by clicking on the Hip2Help image in the right sidebar (look for the blonde girl in the bus). You can also click on the 4 communities where we will be stopping for more specific information. For example, you can find specific information about each family and community events for Calhoun County by clicking here: https://hip2save.com/its-hip2help-in-calhoun-county

There’s not a tab that I can find, but it is categorized to bring up all relative posts together: https://hip2save.com/category/hip2help
..You can also find the category link (as well as all the posts) by searching ‘Hip2Help Tour’ – but I agree that a tab or link somewhere would be hip2helpful ๐Ÿ™‚

Collin, I hate to ask you to do something else but is there anyway we can get the sizes for the parents for all the sponsored families . My kids are grown and married so I don’t really have kids clothes but I can send some of mine and DH’s clothes. I haven’t been near a size 2 in years…LOL.
Also, I know they don’t need fall/winter clothes right now but Anniston gets snow. Should we send that type clothing now or wait til the fall? I haven’t been to any of the hit areas and thankfully I have never experienced this type devastation so I don’t know if there is a place to store these type items now. Thanks!

    • Collin

I am trying to locate the parent’s sizes right now. If I am able to obtain this information, I will update the post. Thanks!

    • Norma

I live in Anniston and it doesn’t snow much if at all. Right now it’s super hot 90F and humid. Shorts go a long ways into September/October

  5. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

does any one know what the girl is having surgery for and if it was from the tornado what is it. broken leg? ect. thanks

    • Collin

I believe that the surgery is not related to the storm. ๐Ÿ˜€

    • Tina

It is not related to the storm, It was scheduled before the storm. It is reconstructive surgery. Unknown why or how it was injured. Thanks for helping!

      • Tina

On her spine, sorry I left that off.

I was talking to my daughters and we thought a very easy way to help them would be to go buy gift cards which can then be used by the teen to pick out her own styles for their clothing.
I didn’t know what stores were in the area and will choose stores that offer on-line shopping.
We are off to Aeropostle to buy a gift card for the girl and will send if off with a card from my teens who helped kick in some money from their allowances ๐Ÿ™‚ My medically fragile daughter wanted to get something for the girl as she empathized with having surgery … any idea of her interests?

    • Tina

I did not get any of that info, but Im sure anyting you send will be loved. We are doing a basket for the parents with odds and ends in it gift cards gadgets bath and body stuff..
and there are 2 malls one in Oxofrd and 1 in Gadsden there are lots young people friendly sotres, gap, american eagle, old navy, Aeropostle, etc. Thank you for helping.

I am trying to get more info from an aunt today.. I will post as soon as I know. THANKS YALL!

I have had many surgeries on my spine and neck and I can tell you a great idea if you can get the names of the mall, maybe a mall giftcard to be used at any of the occupying stores because it would be nice to put TO GET YOUR HAIR DONE or MANICURE. It feels so great to get those things done before a spine surgery as it is sometimes weeks or months before you can really get out. If it is neck then it will be months too before you get your hair done again. It can involve physical therapy and a brace for a while too. I don’t know exactly what she is having done but the spine is usually no small thing. And painful. Remember lots of people think material gifts or flowers that die, but it is nice to get pampered as well. Can get the mall websites then too, go on and find out how expensive those places are, Or contact Tina on how to best pull this one off, maybe she has a hair place she already prefers (don’t we all, or at least know where we WONT go back to, ๐Ÿ™‚ ). I could go in it with you too if we can do this. AHHH. sorry getting excited as I wish someone (the man lol) woulda thought of this for me. haha. Laughing because I recently had more surgeries and have not had my hair done before or yet so it’s been almost 2 years. (I always forget to go get it done, and I am still not up for it as the last was back and then neck) You can email me at fairysfly77 (at) yahoo.com title it thornton family. If it’s a no, I won’t be offended, let me know and maybe can repost the idea

    • i want to cry

I am seriously the worst right now. I thought the post stated july8 for surgery, and its june8. I am sad my idea would not work then for before but it would still work for after. So sorry about the mistake ๐Ÿ™

      • Tina

Thank you so much for your kind words. You asked how I could not help but keep the words off the keyboard, well, its not ME that cant, its HIM in ME that did it, cause I could have easly lost it back up there, but I give all the credit there to Jesus Christ. I am too blessed to be stressed about what she had to say, and if she were here and saw all the devistation these people are going thru, her tune would change. Unlike when we have a car houses are not DRIVEN down a road and the poslbilty of injuring others, and not all people have any luxuarys, not even HEALTH insurance to buy meds they need so any way.. thanks for your kind words. Made me feel better..about it all.

Hi Collin – Just curious what is the difference between sending to each individual family’s address or the address (PO BOX) that you had originally providing in the Hip2Help tour? Thanks in advance! ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Collin

The only difference is that packages mailed to the original PO Box that I posted (with a Camp Lejeune, NC address) will come to me and I will then transport them to the family in July. If you mail a package directly to the addresses listed above, Tina (our wonderful Hip2Save reader/volunteer) will be assessing the packages and getting them to the family immediately if they are items that are needed now.

  8. Becky

Are you going to do anything for families in Joplin, MO? I am an Missourian and was back home in Branson when it happened. In fact, a couple hours after the tornado hit Joplin, that same storm came at us!

  9. Bree

It’s devastating to see this destruction. I lived in Jacksonville,AL (also in Calhoun County)for 3 years (I’m a JSU Alumni) and this part of Alabama is definately Tornado Alley. I remember times in college when my friends and I would all get under mattresses together b/c of the threat of tornadoes. Several of my family members (on my husband’s side) and friends live in this area still and it’s scary to see and hear their first-hand accounts of this tornado. It’s a great thing that Hip2Save and Collin are doing this. The world needs alot more good people like them.

    • Tina

Bree, would love for you to come out and help us on the 9th.. email me at tinahorn@bellsouth.net or call the above number if you are intrested. Thanks!

I am writing from the Ringgold, GA area where we were hit with an F4 tornado on April 27th. We are within a few miles of the Tennessee border, which was hit as well. My church, Apison Baptist Church, has been the disaster relief location for over a month now and we have been overwhelmed with all types of items that we can spare and have been wanting to give forward. I am positive I can pull together as much clothing and any other items this family may need, if someone can give me a more detailed listing.

    • Cathi Thurston

we could use anything that we could put in goodie bags for storm survivors….ie shampoo tooth brushes and paste, deodorant, lotions, razors, shampoos and conditoners…also small toy items for the kids, maybe items specific to men ie (tools…you an get these at dollar tree)
we are putting together several hundred of these bags for the day of the event….anything you could spare would be great!!!!

  11. Kayla

Thanks for posting this! I was just getting a bag of clothes ready to give away and I know some of them will work forthe family, so I will mail them to the family instead! So glad they will be going to good use!

  12. Mary

    Hi Tina!

Thank you for helping Collin organize this for the family. I am a mail carrier and thought this might help~ It is great to give the carrier a heads up that you are expecting lots (and lots! ๐Ÿ™‚ of packages. Just let them know where packages should be/can be left in case there is no one available to accept them at the church or your home (back porch, with a neighbor, at the PO, etc.). Both addresses may be on rural routes. Some rural carriers drive their own vehicles and may have limited amount of space for what I imagine will be a Jeep load of packages just for you! (Which will be awesome!) They may be able to make special delivery arrangements for you! I know our Postmaster would make special arrangements. Thanks for all you are doing to help the family!

    • Tina

Thanks Mary! I am very good friends with my mail carrier He is great, and I have told him about the things that may be coming. Also the other address is my church and they too know about what may be coming. Thanks for reminding us about this.

  13. jennifer

When I see this I do not know how we missed being hit I am five minutes from them I will continue to do all I can to help. I have been out helping everyday. Calhoun County and several areas in Alabama lost so much I still wake up daily wondering how this happen and several states also are going through this I am so thankful for the support of hip 2 save thank you for all that everyone has done

    • Tina

Jennifer, I feel the same way, this is one reason I am so thankful to be able to help the HIP2SAVE crew with all they are doing.. We (calhoun county) will be ever so grateful. Wanna help? contact me.

  14. becky1618

Hubby wears a 32. I’ll have him clean out his closet when he gets home ๐Ÿ™‚

  15. Pamiam412

I dont know if this is possible, but a pay pal button would be so great to just start adding funds to what the family needs. I know someone who has been through a disaster is thankful for anything they get, but I also know teens and how they can be embarrassed by the littlest things. It would be so great just to give the teens money to get things they will love to wear and give them a little self confidence while they are homeless. It would be so great to also be able to specify amounts to each member of the family or for the house. Just a thought.
Also will we get a picture of this family? I would love to post a picture of them on my fridge. It reminds me to sacrifice the extras to be able to send money to help.
Thanks for thinking of a way we can all be involved to help!

    • Tina

we may be able to get a picture at the “day of healing” event. If so I will send it to the site and when Collin gets home she can up load.. But rest assured, there will be a LOT of picture taking. I am a picture nut!
