As most of you know, we will be embarking on the Hip2Help Tour in early July and are planning to sponsor between 1-3 families in 4 different communities along the way. Thanks to the help of Hip2Save reader volunteer Sarah in Elmore County, Alabama, we are honored to introduce another one of our sponsored families in Alabama, the Meadows Family. The Meadows family consists of dad, mom, and boy (age 10). As you can see from the pictures above, the Meadows family lost virtually their entire home and are currently living on their property out of two campers (they are using what is left of their house for the bathroom and closet). Here is a little about their story:

When the tornado hit on April 27th, the family was in the bathroom in their house. The tornado picked up the house and moved it 2-4 inches…when the house hit the ground again, it broke the cinderblocks underneath! Luckily the family was on the opposite side of the house where a tree landed. The mother credits the tree for saving them, “without the tree falling on the house, we would have gotten thrown around.” The family did not have insurance and is awaiting to hear back on loans to rebuild. They have been told they cannot move another mobile home onto the property, so they will now have to build.

Their ten year old son loves to read books about WarLocks and Dragons. He also loves remote control cars. The family is not in need of clothing as they have already received plenty of clothing through donations. Instead, they are in need of living room furniture (the couch that was in the living room has shards of glass all over it). The dining room table was also destroyed in the tornado, so they are in need of a table and chairs. The linen closet that held all their bedding was damaged in the tornado so they are in need of twin and full size bedding. Bathroom towels and bathroom supplies would be great as well!

Please mail donations for the Meadows Family to the following address (if you are local to Elmore County, you can call Sarah to arrange local delivery of your donations):
Note: If your donated items are not immediately needed by the family, they will be stored in this location until we arrive in July.

You mean mail donations for the Meadows Family? Because you wrote Hall!

    • Collin

      Woops! Thanks for catching that!

  2. Ryanne

Is there any possible way to keep an update on what has been received so everyone doesn’t send the same thing?

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

As I get donations in I will update everyone!!

      • yippee8999

Have you received full sized bedding for the parents of this family yet? If not, that’s what I planned to send but thought I’d check first.

        • SARAH

no not yet i have not

  3. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Collin, you truly are amazing! I love that you are so caring and giving. You are so inspiring and just a wonderful person. This is such an amazing program you are doing to help out these families. God Bless you!!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

BTW – I will be sending some care packages!! =)

  4. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

what about the people who are losing their homes in AZ bc of those fires? are you gonna help them to?

    • Lisa m

there were a lot of familys that lost there homes in bertie county in N.C. but you can only do so much, I think its great to take the lead in trying to help any of these people

    • Annoyed

WOW! Such negativity! be thankful that she is helping where she can!

      • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Wasn’t being negative in anyway. you think so negative that you assumed I was. WOW people these days. It’s great what she’s doing but i was asking a real question/suggestion. I guess no one can do that these days with people going and thinking something else. Crazies!!

        • Jill

I’m not a negative person and I’m only going to chime in to say, that sometimes what you see in writing is hard to understand and could be taken the wrong way. That could have happened in this case as well. Responding rudely and attacking someone doesn’t reflect well on anyone.

There are so many people sadly that need help, that unless there are more people like Collin many go without receiving these kinds of donations. While I don’t think one tragedy means more than another, but this family she speaks of doesn’t even have homeowners insurance. Many people who do will have many of their items replaced.
Are you in AZ? You could make an impact for those who are losing homes and rally your community, friends and local organizations etc to start a drive for the unfortunate situation in AZ

          • Jill

On top of that, doesn’t arguing over some ridiculous comment seem very selfish when your commenting that way on a post about a family who has LOST so much. Be happy you have what you have because they need basic necessities. Seems very petty and this isn’t the place to do it!

I think this is great, what you are doing. I have sent care pkgs & donated money to my home state of Missouri because of all their devastation. So tragic.

  6. Lisa m

I am in tears this is so sad, I will be sending a care package too, I assume you got my other one. Thanks collin for all you do, I am starting a coupon group next week, I will see about collecting some donated mdse for the other the familys you have mentioned, from my group

  7. cole

Do you know if they need specific genders on the sheets? I have some girls twin sheets I’d be happy to send along. Also, could they use school supplies? Staples has the $3 off an purchase coupon.

    • SARAH

I will find out the gender on the sheets and get back to you asap! Thank you!!

  8. Tiffany

Wow. That looks really scary. I know if I was any of those people with destroyed houses I would MOVE!! IMMEDIATELY!! Too scary for me! I’m grateful our job moved us to a place that has no earthquakes, no tornados….although one of our many volcanoes may explode one day! LOL!! :/ I’m glad there’s someone that cares enough to take their time to sponsor these families. Good for you!

  9. Staci

Collin (or anyone else that might know) –

My husbands life insurance business (tdlifeservices.com) would like to donate gift certificates to local supermarkets for these families – they might get the more material things you are pointing out that they need fairly quickly, and he figures you can never have too much money to spend on food – any way you could include local market names where these families live? Or email them to tomer@tdlifeservices.com or myself. We would love to help. Thank you!

    • Collin

I just searched for grocery stores in the Elmore County area and found the following: Ingrams, Piggly Wiggly, Winn-Dixie and Walmart. Thanks so much to you and your hubby for supporting these families! 😀

  10. anon

maybe I have missed some of the families being highlighted, but how come they all have just 2 kids – one boy and one girl???
I think that it’s great that you are helping, but couldn’t they use most of this stuff before July?

    • Collin

It is total coincidence that all of the sponsored families thus far have one boy and one girl (we will actually be highlighting a family with 4 girls under the age of 9 next week).

As I said in the post above, the reader volunteers that are receiving the donations are going through each box to ensure that the families get the items that they need right away.

      Thanks for your support! 😀

  11. kake

Is that ok to send WM gift card to this address?

    • Collin

Yes, gift cards can be sent to the Wetumpka address in the post above. Thanks so much!

  12. yippee8999

Okay. I decided to send other items instead because I didn’t want to send something they may have already received.
