Peanut Butter Prices Expected to Rise 24-40% In Coming Weeks… So Stock Up While you Can!
This Hip2Save.com Deal was hand-posted on Wednesday, October 12th, 2011 at 1:20 pm.

Peanut butter, oh how I love my Peanut butter!
Whether it’s spread on a piece of toast, slathered over a banana, or just used in baking… yum!
As much as I love my peanut butter, I’m saddened by this news! You may have seen in the Wall Street Journal yesterday that due to another hot, dry summer this year’s peanut crop was completely devastated, sending prices for the peanut skyrocketing and forcing peanut-butter brands including the popular Jif, Skippy, and Peter Pan brands to raise their prices. According to the Wall Street Journal, the prices of peanut butter will be rising 24% to 40% in the next few weeks.
You can read more details here or here.
With that being said, you may want to pull out all your peanut butter coupons and scout out the best deals before November rolls around! Here are a few deals to note…

Starting 10/23-10/29, Walgreens will be offering Planters Peanut Butter 16.3 oz jars for 2/$3 with in-ad coupon! This seems like a good price and if you have any coupons, you can get an even better deal!
Another deal to note is on Amazon… the Peanut Butter & Co. Peanut Butter, Crunch Time, 16-Ounce Jars (Pack of 6) is priced at just $15.92 after Subscribe & Save + FREE Shipping through Amazon Prime! That makes each jar of 100% natural peanut butter just $2.65 shipped to your door, which is a great price considering this brand of peanut butter sells for over $4 a jar in-store at Target (and other stores as well)! And the best part in my opinion is that you won’t even have to go anywhere to get this deal… love that!
Or if you’re a Jif addict, you can snag the Jif Natural Crunchy Peanut Butter Spread, 18-Ounce (Pack of 6) priced at just $14 after Subscribe & Save + FREE Shipping through Amazon Prime! That makes each 18 ounce jar ONLY $2.33 each shipped to your door! (Thanks, dr_beanz!)
If you know of any other peanut butter deals, please leave a comment! Thanks!

my dad has to eat peanut butter everyday because of the protein he needs. what if it gets to high to buy. then his protein level will go down.

Thanks for the heads up!

I love me some Jif! That news stinks!
Melanie says:
In case anyone is interested, Planters PB is made with hydrogenated oil, the other brand is not. Just FYI.
Anon says:
Palm fruit (kernal) oil. Watch out it is sneaking up in a lot of products lately touted as a healthier alternative. Not so.
Amy says:
Thanks for the heads up. My kids go through the PB like crazy! I happen to have some $1.00 off coupons for Planters PB too. Yay!
Alea says:
I’m not too worried – it seems to go up and down in price all the time. Stores will still have sales & coupons will come out – making it pretty affordable still. Higher prices will slow down demand, and they will be able to bring down the price again. Just gotta keep shopping the deals – who pays full price anyways?
sringrose says:
I doubt it goes up or down in price 24-40% on a regular basis. This is a long-term price increase – probably for a year or so – due to market shortages.
Alea says:
A year isn’t long-term to me. 5+ years is long-term. Everything is about supply and demand. This has happened in the past, along with other foods. It’s people that are so worried about price increases that go out and clear shelves, buy up all the gas at stations, etc – increasing the price for everyone as supply diminishes.
Once again, I’m not worried. Life will just be fine and peanut butter will still exist and be attainable.
catherine says:
Thank you for saying that, why was I starting to worry? You’re absolutely right. While I still might stock up, there’s just no point in worrying. (BTW, I got a good deal on Smart Balance pb yesterday with a 75c coupon that doubled.)
milly says:
good thing we’re not pb-eaters
Emily says:
If you have a Wegmans nearby, you could stock up there. They have promised not to raise prices on 40 store brand items through the end of the year- PEANUT BUTTER ($1.29) included.
Alea says:
Why stock up now if they have a promise not to increase the price on it?
Seems like it will only diminish the supply at the store making them not able to stock it for long…
Carrie says:
she is saying stock up before the end of the year
Emily says:
I meant stock up right before the end of the year, to have a supply once the price goes up in January.
catherine says:
The end of the year is pretty near. They also have a promise to hold prices down on chicken and beef. Thank you for the reminder and the info.

ugh, this will make it even harder/more expensive for them to help people who desperately need the help.

wow…this really puts things into perspective; we can complain all day about rising cost, but i am sure the majority of us will not ever have to see our kids starve…thank God we are so blessed!

SK says:
Here’s an idea- stock up on peanuts instead and make your own! I put peanuts in my food processor with some salt and some oil (vegetable, peanut, sunflower, etc- just don’t use olive!) and mix- it makes a nice, kind of chunky peanut butter. You do need to put it in the fridge.
I prefer this to any peanut butter I buy in the store- and it’s not loaded with sugar and additivies like the store-bought kinds!
Lisa says:
Excellent!
Carol_R says:
I like a little sugar in my peanut butter & I don’t like the type that separates with the oil on top.
Anon- says:
I used to agree with you–until I found out what it was doing to my health to eat the no-stir options–including the new versions claiming to be good for you. Nothing about palm kernal oil is good for you. Which is starting to pop up even in so-called natural and even organic products-watch out for that–just more corporate greed trying to get a foot hold in the latest trend.
Donna says:
The 2nd brand is all natural and yummy! Planters uses Hydrogenated oil (basically Crisco!! ) not good for the heart. Thanks for your post. : )
Kelly says:
bummer! hoping for some good sales to replenish our stockpile. we have 5 full fledged peanut butter lovers and an up and coming one as well as one that stops by on occasion. my kiddos go into panic mode when the go to the cellar and we are down to 5 jars….. they run up in panic “Mom – there’s only 5 jars left!!!!”

kriss spencer says:
We usually buy ours at Sam’s if we can’t find a crazy bargain. They price is usually around 7.5 cents per ounce. $7.28 for 96 ounces (Jif)
stocking up this week!
Lisa says:
Luckily I have about a year’s worth of peanut butter stocked in my pantry from a somewhat recent Walgreens deal. I think I paid 75 cents a jar? And I was able to get a free jar at Walmart recently too with a printable Planters coupon. Unfortunately I can’t remember where I printed it and what the amount was.
LisaR says:
I saw this on the news too few days ago!! I had 4 Planters $2 Q’s too, They came fron the Kraft First Taste site. I used them at Publix( $2.59) and stacked it with the $.75 Target Q so FREE Plus overage!! I also bought 10 jars of the Skippy a while back at Publix and they where like $.20 each!!
eden says:
if you got the high dollar $2 planters coupon a few weeks ago, that will be free at walgreens next week! also, its $2.29 at shoprite, so 29 cents there. probably pretty cheap at other stores as well. think it was a FB coupon…
hotmomcoupon says:
I used my $2 planters coupon at Safeway on a sale the other days and scored 4 jars for 49 cents OOP.
fran says:
Hi Eden,
The Walgreen coupon doesn’t start until 10/23, the week after next.
Check the date on your $2 coupons, mine expire 10/15, so if you prinited yours the same day, yours probably have the same expiration date.
I called Wags, and they are $3.39 this week. I didn’t see Planters at my S.R., but thanks for the heads up.
kitten mommy says:
I got $2/1 MQ too, and my Target had planter’s PB on sale for $1.99, so FREE jar of PB
fran says:
Thanks Kitten Mommy
bali says:
LOL we go through about 1 jar of pb a YEAR, and I have 3 jars in my pantry (call me a crazed hoarder!). I think we’ll be fine (as long as the price of Nutella doesn’t go up!)
Sarah says:
I’m with you!!! My hubby and my 2 year old are the only ones in our house that can eat PB so we don’t go through more than a jar a year. But I go through a small jar of Nutella every 2 weeks!!! (I have a mild peanut allergy
)
Nika says:
Anybody who has a FoodTown nearby (not sure if they are TX only or not..?) They frequently have a 3 pack of Peter Pan Peanut Butter on sale for $2.99. That’s my favorite time to stock up!
Rhonda says:
Watch your shelf life on the bargains….and I know you do….but peanut butter didn’t have the shelf life I would have expected it too. Just FYI…:)
mary says:
Smucker’s natural is 15.19 for a 6 pack and it comes in glass jars
Marie says:
Although the prices will go up, I hope everybody who loves their family will put their health on the first place and not money. DO NOT buy any more peanut butter with hydrogenated oil. It is very bad for your health. Please read this article and inform everybody who doesn’t know yet about the poison in your kids food.
http://www.dldewey.com/hydroil.htm
Laura says:
What about palm oil? I bought a huge jar of Jif Natural and that’s the oil they put in it.
Eve says:
ugh I would never eat anything with Palm oil in it. It’s devastating to the environment. They are clearing away important rain forest habitats that are vital to many critically endangered species to make plantations for palm oil manufacturing. This is happening in biodiversity hotspots that are the most important to protect.
I’d rather eat hydrogenated oils sparingly personally than increase the demand for palm oil. It’s also why chipotle decided to use hydrogenated soybean oil instead of palm oil.
mary says:
Is it only peanuts not other nuts? Seems like you can’t ever pack PB in a lunch anymore anyway…I was figuring I would have to buy almond butter or something for the kids’ lunches even though they aren’t allergic.
Anonymous says:
is planters the only one that has hydro oil or there are others?
Ap says:
I think regular skippy and peter pan have hydro oil as well…i use skippy natural which does not. hth!
Anonymous says:
thank you
Laura says:
We eat peanut butter every single day in our house! Thankfully, I already stocked up about a month ago so we are set for a while.
kjarcollins says:
We do, too. We literally go through a jar every week, because my daughter is mostly a vegetarian, and that’s where she gets her protein. I got about 9 jars for $.33 each not too long ago, and they did not last long! I haven’t had any good coupons to stock up recently, so we only have one jar!
kjarcollins says:
BTW, that was Skippy natural, which is our favorite!
Amanda W. says:
Severe peanut allergy in the family so we don’t buy peanut butter anyways. We use Sunbutter which is made from sunflower seeds and taste almost identical!
Brook says:
Same here in our household. Daughter with a peanut allergy, if only could get Sunbutter at a decent price.
Amanda W. says:
I usually get mine from Amazon…a 3 pack for around $13 and some change with subscribe and save. I don’t even know if that is a good price for delivery to my door but I use my swagbucks to pay so…
ladyflameoffire says:
Walmart sells Great Value Natural PB for $1.99 1lb. jar
anonymous says:
LOVE me Some peanut butter too. HATE me some hfcs (hi fructose cornsyup) and hydrogenated anything or palm anything-Not designed for your body-therefore your body doesn’t know what to do with these.
Next time you reach for your next jar o’ pb… grab something made without the above harmful and completely unnecessary additives. Only saying this because I care for others [just as is empshasized on this wonderful website] and know that those items down the road will only lead to devastating health problems which unfortunately at this point don’t qualify for coupons. And even if they did-would you sacrifice your health for it?
If you say it’s too expensive, think again. I usually find its actually cheaper to buy natural p/b than the overly processed types. For that I use Trader Joes OR 365 Whole Foods. However if I collect coupons for organic brands, than when a sale surfaces, I have a killer deal. YES, even better than the deals you’ve ever seen for skippy. No Joke–My last price paid for Organic P/B: .99 cents/jar on clearance at my local natural shop. Love It !!
Processed nut butter is anything but healthy. For example “Jiff” and other brands in the past have removed the natural oils and refinements (found to be nutritious and beneficial to health) and replaced them with “hydrogenated oils” as well as added chemically processed sugars. Eeeek!
I used to have that hot sale pb lined up in my cabinet too. Till I realized what the hell was in my pb. I have switched baby, and I’m never going back. Thanks for all you do H2S.
Ann says:
sure are a lot of drum beaters and holier than thous over all natural PB on here.
Anonymous says:
“like” the comment Ann. I try to boycott organic when possible since it isn’t really healthier, it just has a lower crop yield and creates food shortages.
Eve says:
I agree I am distrustful of anything labeled organic.
“organic” doesn’t even mean anything anyway. There is no standards they have to follow at all to call themselves organic. Some people think that it means they don’t use pesticides. They do just “natural” ones that are often unrefined versions of the pesticides non “organic” farmers use which is even worse for you! It’s just an excuse to jack up prices and prey on consumer fears.
Looking at the Skippy peanut butter now i see that their “natural” brand uses palm oil which is such a joke. The consumer is fooled into thinking that the “natural” brand is some how better when in fact it’s the most environmentally damaging choice they could possibly make.
IIA Farming Momma says:
Have you all been on a farm that raises organic food?
Anonymous says:
Farming Momma, Are you able to educate us further or are you just asking? Eve, Lower crop yields = starvation. I’m tired of being guilt tripped about every choice because of “environmental impact” when most of the time the “impact” is hyped up or nonexistent.
Jana says:
whoo-hoo!! SOOOOOO true! I think it’s hilarious that people think Organic is so much healthier–I just snicker and think to myself–go ahead and pay more for your food. I’ll stick to the facts and the research and eat my cheap, conventionally grown food!
Marie says:
When I was at Meijer last week, they had a sign posted on the shelf area where the peanut butter is saying they apologize for not having a good supply in stock but it is beyond their control. It did look pretty empty in spots. Not only is it price but stores getting inventory and having stock.
IA Running Momma says:
I’ve stopped eating peanut butter for about a year now, and really love peanut flour. I order in bulk to make up for the shipping costs. This is so much healthier, and I love the company. Small town ppl just like us! This is where I order mine from: http://www.southerngracefarms.net/peanutflour.html
They have something similar at our Hy-Vee stores, (PB2) but has added sugar and salt to it, and the stuff from Southern Grace does not.
Melissa says:
Is peanut butter okay past it’s best by date? I stocked up a while back when target had the huge jars for super cheap but the best by date is coming up. I know most products are still okay past the date, just not as fresh.
Laura says:
Nuts and nut butters can go bad, they get rancid. The peanut butter probably will be fine for a while past the best by date, but not indefinitely. You probably would be able to taste it if they were rancid. HTH!
Tracie says:
you don’t want to eat rancid fat — always use anything with oil in it within a few weeks of its best-by date. Keep it stored away from heat and sunlight. Rancid fat can be really unhealthy, even if it doesn’t smell rancid yet.
Christie says:
My local grocery store (Reasor’s) is having a Saturday only sale on which the Planter’s peanutbutter is 99cents! (Limit 4) Now, I need to see if I have any coupons, or if there are any on the internet I should print. Anybody know of any?
littleblessings says:
I just geard this today from my store in our area it is already high the manager told me to stock up it will be about $6 a jar!!!
Ashley says:
man I learnt a lot from this post… lol, but that price jump is crazy, but so is just about everything else sooo… guess we’ll just keep on couponing
Kandice says:
Peanuts are legumes (like soybeans and peas) not nuts. They grow as plants mainly in the southern states.
You can also take this opportunity to try out PNB alternatives. There are a number of tree nut butters – almond, hazelnut, as well as alternatives such as soybutter and sunbutter (sunflower seed).
loraloiuse says:
Albertsons (in TX) has the Planters PB .99 cents when you buy two and a couple of weeks ago it was 1.49 when you bought ten (I have a raincheck). Going to get my PB before price hike.
Cathy says:
So, I might be seriously missing something, but how do I sign up for the Subscribe and Save thing?
K says:
the thing that worries me about this is i’ve seen stories on the news where they say customers get used to the price increase so when the so called shortage is over they very rarely lower the price back down.
Newday1 says:
Well if your really want to research something about where our “cheap and conventional” foods come from and how they impact our health and the environment…..then go here

and search for warnings about unhealthy ingredients in our food that the FDA does not require food mfg’s to warn us about.
and read this entire article about Monsanto who controls over 1/3 of the worlds agriculture and spends billions to lobby for FDA standards in their favor. Take time to read the facts…then make up your mind. So many people in the US just take for granted that the FDA has your family’s health and safety in mind.
Interview quote – Jeffrey Smith The leading consumer advocate promoting healthier, non-GMO choices:
~Well, if the FDA were absolutely dedicated to protecting public health, giving them more power makes sense. But investigation after investigation for years, it turns out that they often serve their, quote, “clients,” which is industry. Even one-third of their own surveyed members in September revealed that they believe that corporate and special interests really dictates policy in the area of public health. So, my opinion is, giving them more power without first eliminating that bias towards corporations is a dangerous formula. In fact, they are officially mandated with promoting the biotech industry, which is obviously a conflict of interest.
Just a quote for J.S. interview…go read the rest of the facts in the transcript here here http://responsibletechnology.org
Jana says:
there really is no such thing as “non-GMO” choices–unless we got the original seeds that God put on the earth, which is impossible. So, everything is genetically modified in some way. Now, I’m not defending Monsanto because I don’t agree with everything they do–but, my husband is in a AG leadership group and they toured a Monsanto Plant and he told me about how they are doing some pretty amazingly cool things to help speed up the genetic process, which in turn will really increase the food supply and help FEED MORE PEOPLE for much cheaper in the rapidly growing population!

maynekitty says:
Peanut Flour Price Going Up on 2/7/12 at Southern Grace Farms — The price for peanut flour will increase tomorrow 2/7/12. Today is the last day to buy at the current price. Their shipping is reasonable also. Trader Joes carries the exact same thing because Southern Grace Farms packs it for them. The price of peanuts has gone up drastically this past year because of last seasons poor crop harvest caused by excessive summer heat. All major pb brands will be raising prices somewhere between 25-30%, if they haven’t done so already. Hope the peanut farmers have better summer weather and an increased yield in 2012.
