Sent from reader, Jacinda, of Homemaker Hand Guide:

I know Easter is coming up, and I know that you have kiddos, so you might enjoy this 🙂 I was coming up with some ideas for Easter baskets, and I wanted to share something I do to get Easter grass for the baskets on the cheap. I just take colored paper that I already have around the house and put it through the paper shredder. It makes the best Easter grass for goodies!

HAPPY FRIDAY! 😀

Clever! Now I really wish I had a shredder!

    • Maritza Mia

      lol

      • Ashley57

LOL, that is my problem too. Wonder if I should just cut it with scissors.

  2. Sara

That would definitely be better on the vacuum, and you could recycle it after!

  3. Macy

Easter grass is sooo cheap. Paper is sooo much more expensive!

    • Charis

That’s exactly what I was thinking unless it’s old colored flyers that come home ever day in kids school folders! Now that would be FREE! 🙂

    • mamabug

My thoughts as well. I wouldn’t consider this frugal at all unless you were just shredding old stuff. I paid 10 cents for my Easter grass about 10 years ago and I reuse it every year (its the paper kind too, not the plastic stuff) so I figure I’m in it for less than a penny a year.

    • Tilla R Ham

i was thinking same thing, just didn’t want to say so:) the kids school sends so much colored paper home with announcements so that would at least be recycling it for another purpose

      • Belle

Crafty, yes, but definitely not frugal. In fact, I think it’s quite wasteful to use expensive colored paper, when easter grass is so cheap and even free sometimes (CVS) and can be reused from year to year.

        • Eileen

I have done this, but I use the comics sections from the local Sunday paper. It comes out pretty colorful and it’s something I already get, so not extra $$ for expensive craft paper.

    Great idea!

  6. Rachel

    What a great idea!

  7. lili

Great idea and if the colored paper was free or close to free even better

  8. Aly

VERY cute and clever! Love the colors!

  9. Tessa

If you’re a crafter-use a paper crimper first, then shred it so u get the wiggly looking grass

  10. Becky

Awesome! My cats like to eat Easter grass (no matter how I try to keep it away from them, they always manage to ingest some) so this is a really good substitution for me (still not perfect but much easier for them to pass).

    • Laura

My one cat loves to eat plastic so Easter grass is absolutely out of the question! This is a great idea. Glad to know I am not the only one with a crazy kitty 😉

      • Joy

Becky and Laura..one of my cats..he got stuck in the handles of a grocery bag when he was about 3 years old.. ever since..I can not bring plastic bags in the house..he will gnaw the handles off the bag.. ONLY HANDLES mind you.. leave all the rest in tact.. then we all know when it goes it..it has to come out somewhere..haha.. who says dogs are smarter than cats..

Cute ite with the color paper for Easter baskets..but like others..I would consider using any colored paper from flyers or that I got free.. neat website Homemaker Hand Guide..thnx

        • Joy

          ite= idea

      • Carrie

Becky and Laura, I have two cats and they both eat plastic bags and paper grass as well! Another idea instead of grass is colored tissue paper. I have been putting this at the bottom of my kids baskets for years. You can just kinda fluff it up a bit in the basket and it looks cute. I just save it from birthdays or other presents and reuse it.

        • mj

good that my cats dont read this post ….
U may wan to get them some real grass/grow from seeds/they would probably love it

  11. Heather

    what a fantastic idea!!!!!

  12. Tone

Pinterest bound, thanks for the idea!

  13. sarah

Use scrapbook paper for fun designed grass strands

  14. mel

Been doing this for years! Sometimes I accordion fold the paper so it’s crinkly when I run it through the shredder. I’ve even used colored tissue paper.

  15. Darlene Cyr

    Thanks!!!Great idea!!

  16. brenda

Great idea!I must ask, what kind of shredder do you have?Looks like a nice one!

  17. Sara

Thanks for the idea! Now I know what I’ve been saving all my kids flyers from school for!

  18. DMarie

Love the idea! I never really liked having to buy the “plastic” grass, this is a great solution!

  19. Emily Apat

My mother inlaw did this one year. Some of the paper got on the floor in the kitchen and fell onto some spritzed water from a very wet raincoat. The color immediately came out of the paper and onto my old beige linoleum floor. it was nearly impossible to get the color off the floor and I ended up scrubbing the floor with a bunch of different cleaners until it finally lightened enough that you didn’t notice it. If you make Easter grass this way, make absolutely sure it is not near anything wet or even damp or you will have to deal with color transfer. Otherwise, its an economical and easy idea!

  20. April M.

    Now that’s a green idea! 🙂

  21. Doug

You can buy Easter grass for pennies after Easter.

  22. The Frugal Free Gal

    Cute idea! Thanks! 🙂

  23. sonora

i like to buy green tulle in the fabric section at walmart. we used it over and over every year and i could wash it as well.

    • Andrea

That’s a great idea. Reusable and not messy

  24. Christina

    collin,

holy COOOWWW, I would have never thought!!! thank you so much. Its amazing how we dont think of the simple things…so much better too for pets and vacuums. I LOVE THIS 🙂

  25. kelsey

I love the idea! Yes easter grass can be cheap but its not green!! If you have a shredder and colored paper from flyers dont buy easter grass just make you own! Great Idea!

  26. mari d

good idea, and pastel paper was just free after rebate at staples!

  27. laura

You could replace the printer paper with the comics from the Sunday newspaper and would get a similar (and more colorful) effect – and you are recycling the newspaper!

I try to do as much as possible with left over newspapers so I don’t feel guilty throwing away a ton of paper each week. My grandma used to use comics as gift wrap for kids since its cute and even better, FREE! 😉

Some links that show comics as wrapping paper:

If posting the links isnt allowed please delete – you can google ‘sunday newspaper comics as wrapping paper” and you should find tons!

  28. Amy R.

I have done the same thing for Easter using my left over tissue paper from Christmas.

  29. Keri

Cute idea, but I have a cross-cut shredder… and three young boys. I don’t know that I’d want to deal with the little pieces all over the house. 🙂

  30. Lacy

I don’t think it’s a bad idea. We just don’t use any “grass” because of the silly cats. We also don’t use baskets..instead I buy the really really big buckets that the kids can use after easter at the beach. They hold more eggs when they go on hunts so that another bonus.

  31. Racheal

This is a lot safer for animals than plastic Easter grass.

  32. Christie

I do the exact same thing using my old strip cut shredder. The blades are really dull so it actually causes the paper to crinkle up as it shreds which adds a nice touch! Works for Christmas and other holiday gift baskets as well. I shopped the Staples paper deals a couple of weeks ago and stocked up on the free pastel paper. Took a friend with me so I could get pink, blue, green and yellow. Free paper=free Easter grass and it can be recycled too!

  33. Missy

We do the same thing, except to make it even more frugal, we use paper that has already been shredded.

  34. Karen G.

We have alwyas used the Sunday funny papers for Easter grass. It shreds easily and is always handy.

  35. carey

About 5 years ago I bought something called Easter fluff ( I think) @ Target. It was kind of like colored fiber fill. I have not been able to find since. This stuff was great it stayed in one clump, no finding the plastic grass for 4 months. If any one could tell me where to get this fluff again I would so greatly appreciate it.

  36. kristin

This is a great idea! I actually use tissue paper that I save from gifts we receive on my daughter’s bday. I can’t stand the Easter grass – I always find it months later somewhere random! lol!

  37. Abby

I did this a few years ago as a last resort and thought I was super awesome. I’d forgotten to pick up grass and grabbed a few sheets of different colored green papers I had around and shredded them up. The baskets looked extra awesome that year, I have to say. But as a normal thing to save money? No way. Last resort…emergency sort of thing for sure though. 🙂

  38. Amanda

This will not exactly save you money but in my house we don’t bother with grass in the Easter baskets at all we use $1 bills (tri-folded). Then only snacks are placed in the basket no actual gifts….and with the rule at our house being that 50% must be saved it helps the college fund also.
