Kathleen says:
Why is today tax day and not yesterday?
Danielle says:
The 15th was a sunday so normally that would make the 16th Tax daty, but the District of Columbia yesterday was Emancipation Day — a local holiday unfamiliar to most Americans, so the federal government was closed due to location of the main office and today is tax day!
barb says:
Because April 15 is some holiday only in Washington DC, so tax day is deferred until today. I don’t know what the holiday is (?) but I’m sure some people were glad to get 2 extra days to file!!
Debbie says:
@ Kathleen: Emancipation Day in DC falls on what would ordinarily be the Individual Federal April Due Date (April 16). Therefore the federal individual due date is Tuesday, April 17.
Deborah says:
Kathleen…When April 15th lands on a Sunday, then Tax day would have been on Monday but, Monday is the District of Columbia’s Emancipation Day — a local holiday unfamiliar to most Americans. Thus by law, District of Columbia holidays are treated like federal holidays when it comes to tax deadlines. That is why it is a Tuesday today. Great question as I wondered also and had to do some research.
Kathy Beltz says:
federal holiday
Colin Adams says:
Because it was a holiday in the District of Columbia yesterday and the IRS decided that it would be unfair to have tax day in D.C. on 17th and the 16th for the rest of the nation
