I am so very disgusted with Dollar General, I don’t even care about the awesome deals anymore. Saturday coupon was a disaster and has been every time for me. No one there ever knows how to do anything, and they wouldnt take my coupons for the hairclor!

    • kahila t

@esther i had the same problem a few months ago and i got fed up and contacted the corporate ofc via their website and the local head manager that oversees the stores here contacted me back. to make a long story short, i voiced my complaints and concerns and about a month and a half later no problems what so ever. with mfg cpns or the 5 off 25 deals. they cant fix a problem if they dont know about.

Tried to use these today. So if they are $3 each, then I buy 2 for $6. Ok so hear is where the cashier gets real stupid, and I usually don’t say stuff like that but this deserves it, and the odd thing is that the manager agreed with the cashier.
      Ok so here it is…..
      Buy 2 at $3 each = $6, I then use (try to use) a coupon for $5/2.
Ok, so I was told that the coupon can not exceed the price of the product, or if 2 item coupon can not exceed the price of both.
Ok, so I said they are $3, $6 for 2, my coupon is for $5 on 2, leaving a balance of $1, how does that exceed? I was told it was because they were only $3. I then said, ok fine, I have 2 for $3 each, so if you look at my coupon as 2 $2.50 coupons since it is for 2 products and the vaule is $5 to be split between 2 products, it still does not exceed $3, it leaves a balance of $0.50.
And that ways how my trip went.

here- not hear. Got I got stupid for a second.

      • Lorri Cotton

Where can I get the coupon? For the $5.00/2 Clairol coupon?

  2. Heather

Is the $5 off $25 coupon only after all coupons have been used?

    • Shelly Magneson

I work for Dollar General. The $25 criteria is as follows. Ring up all items. Pretax must be $25. Then use all Manufacturer coupons. Then use the Dollar General coupons, Then use the $5 off coupon. There will not be any problems if you use them in this order.

      • Cindy J.

Actually the coupon itself tells you to scan the Dollar General coupon before manufacturer coupons.

        • LOL

Cindy is 100% correct! The $5/$25 coupon states BEFORE manuf coupons…cashiers need to carefully read this coupon!

      • Tony

You need to inform your managers of that because not only do they not read the coupon they do not know their own coupon policy. I had such a miserable experience that I would never return.

I had a terrible experience with dollar general on Saturday. I tried using the 5.00 off 25.00 purchase and first she wouldn’t take it. Then she claims she scanned it but it didn’t take the 5.00 off. So I ended up returning everything. It was such a mess and I’m not sure I am ever going to go into that store…so very dissappointing

  4. Danielle Bangert

my total was $37 before coupons and since my total went below $25 she wouldn’t take the $5 off!! so that is what happening to others?! that was my first time trying Dollar General with coupons was so frustrated!!

  5. jenn

I tried to use the $5/$25 and scanned that coupon first and it deducts money from each item so I couldn’t use several of my coupons because of that. The coupon directs the cashier to scan that coupon first, then manu. coupons, I have it right in front of me. I voided my whole order. To make matters even worse there was 1 cashier and about 12 people in line behind me complaining by the time I was done. I’ll never go back to DG, it’s not worth it.

  6. Tera

My friend had the same experience at our new DG. I am so sad to hear all the negative comments. I was excited that DG was coming to CA. Hopefully they will learn

  7. Becky

I had the same problem last Sat. I was so frustrated. My total b4 coupons was $34.37. The $5 off $25 wouldn’t scan, so he laid it aside. Then he scanned all of my Manufacturer’s coupons and then tried to do the DG coupon. It wouldn’t work. He and his manager kept trying to tell me I hadn’t spent $25 (uh- I spent $34.27). I read the instructions on the coupon verbatim, with emphasis on scan it b4 manufacturer’s coupons. They kept telling me it wouldn’t matter whether it was b4 or after, the total spent was under $25. So I had them void my order and asked for corporate’s number. The manager had to go back to the office to get it. They kept saying if the system allowed them to do it they would, but it just wouldn’t work.
Meanwhile, a new cashier comes up and asks me what’s going on. She tells me that she does it all the time – scans the DG coupon first and it always works. So the manager comes back with the number and I tell him what the other cashier said. So I asked him if he he wanted to scan the items again, and scan the DG coupons first, I be happy to try it again.

Guess what – it worked! Imagine that. If you follow the instructions on the coupon, it does work. Who knew.
I haven’t called corporate, but if you want the number it is: 1-800-297-5527.

The dollar general coupon states on it to use it before all other coupons! They would never use my hair color coupons either and said same thing about the money difference. I guess people can’t do math anymore. They never have help in there either and dont know how to void or overide, so becasue I’m trying to save money I end up being the bad guy holding up the line because they never know what they are doing. One time I had them not take a coupon that came off an item in there store.

  9. Dana

It worked well at my DG here in FL. The cashier scaned the the $5off $25 first then the other coupons I had. It does take some time at DG to do your transations because of the computer system, but well worth the the time. Even the customers standing in line behind me was amazed at my savings. FYI…my DG cashier is a couponer too, so that helps!!

  10. Tat

I got $26 worth of goods for $7 at the DG on Saturday! I used the $5 off $25 DG coupon, 2 free Oxydols with the $1 q’s, 7 free boxes of tampons ($1 per box less $1 q), 4 Wisk ($4 less $2 q) and a diet cola for hubby. But I did have an issue with the tampons; after the $5/$25 DG q, they got discounted to .81 but luckily, the cashier manually entered each q at .81. I learned a lession, the $5/$25 DG q discounted some items but not the Oxydol nor the Wisk. Not sure why.

I think it’s my best score yet! I love the Dollar General Store. Does anyone know if there is a blogger just for DG?

  11. Teresa

I just take the ad to Wal Mart have them do a price match. It’s easier than going through the trouble with DG.

  12. Leisa

I went to DG today to pick up some balloons, i happened to want a bday one and did not see any. Did not really you could ask for any balloons they have to be blown up! Only $1 or 1.50!

  13. Tony

Dollar General is a nightmare to shop at. My $5 off $25 dollar coupon rang u pbuthten disappeared. When the manager went to fix it after debating with me how it should of been rung up she could not fix it. She then informed me that you can only use one type of coupon per the like items. So if you buy 3 all’s you can only use one coupon. I will add dollar general to my NEVER GOING TO SHOP stores right next to Walgreens.

    • Becky

That can’t be true. I bought 6 T-Bonz dog treats and used 6 coupons, 2 Gillette Pro Fusion razors and used 2 coupons, 3 Nivea body washes and used 3 coupons, and 2 Trident gums with a B1G1 coupons. My total b4 coupons was $34.37. After the $5 DG coupons and manu, my total was $4.47.

I had a bad experience Saturday also. I go to the register, the mgr/cashier sees I have coupons, and immediately says, I need you to put each coupon with the item you are using it on up on the counter. Strike 1. So, I do, but I say, I have these, but you have to do the 5/25 after you ring up everything, and then the coupons. He says oh no, that isn’t the way it works. I read the bottom right corner aloud. He says I don’t care it just doesn’t work that way. Strike 2. I say, that’s fine don’t ring it up, I will just call corp and get the official answer on how this works. As I am leaving the store, he calls out to me, I know my policies. Strike 3. I call corporate. Very nice, within 48 hours I get a call back from district mgr. He says, I can’t use the 5/25 on Tuesday, but he will instead give me a $10 gift certificate and for me to please go back. I go back, get my Wisk, go to the register, same mgr is working. I say, did J. call you, I am the customer that you had a problem with my order on Saturday. He says yes, produces the gc, and then very rudely again says, I was told by him that I was right on Saturday. Your order will need to be over 25 after coupons. I say, no that is not what he told me. So, I pull out my cell phone and call J, the district mgr back, and he is not happy with mgr. I tell him, I will get to the bottom of exactly how this should be handled, and I did not appreciate his mgr still arguing with me over this. He says, mam, do not leave the store until I get this resolved. I will call mgr right now on the other phone. He does. The mgr all the sudden is very changed. He says to me, what can we do to make this right? I said, do not argue with customers, follow the directions on the coupon next time, and don’t get defensive about people using coupons, we deserve respect just like everybody else. I told him, I will coupon according to what ever policy is in place for that store, I do not try to scoot around the rules, and I am very ethical in my couponing. I was only going by what was in black in white on the coupon, to me there was no gray, the directions were printed on there. I also told him that at least he could have tried the transaction as the directions were printed, and then I would have seen him at least try.The district mgr was still on the phone this whole time with him and heard me. I still left very mad because I felt like he still wanted to have a “power struggle” with me. My next step is to email corporate b/c I want to know exactly how this works. I like Dollar General, I like shopping there. And, I think the district mgr was very professional. It was the store mgr that really should have handled this differently.

I am so glad I wan’t the only one that felt like garbage after leaving that place. Had the same experience with cashier trying to put each coupon with each thing he and was hand entering coupons like he was adjusting them or something. The workers just never know there stuff and its too stressful. When you have to shop with kids and have to go through nonsense it take the joy out of the saving!

    • Becky

I think next time I will do as a helpful DG cashier told me. Hand over the $5 DG coupons and do not give them the rest until afterwards. I will not hand over the stack of coupons to them again.

  16. Melissa

Has anyone had issues trying to use those $1 off coupons on the RepHresh Brilliant tampons, I went in to DG this morning and coupon dinged when tried to use it stating it wasnt valid on items purchased and had to explain that the product i got is whats on coupon, so manager had to show girl how to manual enter and still wouldnt work, So the manager goes and speaks with I guess another manager and says they would have to adjust it down to 80 cents. Not sure what the deal was with them but needless to say item wasn’t purchased left very upset since i had $27 worth of items and my 5 off of 25 along with other coupons. Doubt I will be going back to them again.
