If you received the Buy 1 Herbal Essences Shampoo and Get 1 Herbal Essences Conditioner or Styler FREE coupon found in the 9/16 SmartSource Insert, there are a few great deals you can snag with it! And actually, the deals are even sweeter than I thought after reading the following tip emailed to me by reader, Natasha:

I just realized (not sure if it’s been noticed or mentioned yet) that the Buy One Get One coupon in 9/16’s paper for the Herbal Essences shampoo/conditioner does NOT state that the conditioner has to be of equal or lesser value… so I was able to buy the smallest shampoos (300mL bottles) and get the largest conditioner bottles (1L with the pump) for free!

* Note that the coupon does exclude trial/travel size and the conditioner will only deduct up to $6.99.

With that being said, check out the deals you can currently score using this coupon…

Rite Aid

Buy 2 Herbal Essences Shampoos 10 – 12 oz 2/$6
Buy 2 Herbal Essences Conditioners 23.7 oz (regularly priced around $6+)
Or buy the 33.8 oz conditioners with pump (not sure if the drugstores sell this size – but Walmart does)
Use 2 Buy 1 Shampoo and Get 1 Conditioner or Styler free coupons found in the 9/16 SS
Final Cost only $6 for all 4 products – just $1.50 each!
*And remember that 2 of these bottles are huge and normally retail for $6+… so seems like a *HOT* deal!

Could you combine the $3/2 coupon from awhile back with these?

    • Paola

Yup! The B1G1 coupon applies to the conditioner, whereas the $3/2 coupon can be applied to the shampoo 🙂 HTH!

      • Kristen

Sooo…this could probably be a moneymaker, but definitely free?! I hope so cuz I’m runnin low on shampoo in my stockpile! 🙂

      • Alea

The $3 off applies to the shampoo AND the conditioner – so she can’t use a second coupon on top of that. She would have to buy 4 (or 3) to use both coupons.

        • Paola

Yes, I bought 4 bottles in order to use the coupons. I thought that’s what she meant.

        • ccre_21

          that’s so correct! 🙂

      • Kristen

(different Kristen here, haha) I’m not seeing how the $3/2 is applied to the shampoo only. Since it’s $3/2 wouldn’t it apply to both the shampoo and conditioner?

        • Paola

The $3/2 is applied to two products. So, for me, I bought 2 bottles of shampoo and 2 bottles of conditioner. I used 2 B1G1 to get the conditioners for free, and then 1 $3/2 was applied to the two bottles of shampoo (which were the only items I was purchasing anyway). I also had the 20% CVS coupon, so I ended up paying $3.20+tax (but I had EBs to use, so free! 🙂

          HTH

          • Kristen

Kristen #1 here! Lol!! That makes sense!!!!! Tricky, but it is right!!! (well seems right to me!) Thanks!!

    • Kristen

I don’t think so, unless you are buying 4. The $3/2 applies to two bottles and the BOGO free coupon applies to two. At least in my understanding 🙂

    • Alea

No because $3/2 is attached to both bottles. If you had a coupon for $1.50/1 you could use it at most stores – because you buy “buy” the shampoo, the coupon attaches the free conditioner and the $1.50 is the savings on the shampoo. If that makes sense.

    • Paola

I was able to use both coupons with no problem at CVS. Guess it depends on if your store will accept them or not.

  2. Alea

I know I will be the odd one out about this scenario, but it doesn’t seem overly ethical to me – just because we *can* do something, doesn’t mean it’s always the *right* thing to do. I think it’s stuff like that this has really caused so many store to crack down on coupons and terminology (all the way down to exact size which has caused problems for me several times because that size is not being made because they have bonus bottles with an additional 10% for free). I really think the coupon was meant for people to buy both bottles of the same size….*shrugs*

    • Kathi

I agree with Alea. Just doesn’t feel right to me at all.

      • Alea

        Thanks 🙂

        • Sarah

I agree with you, too, Alea. Most of the time these coupons DO say Buy One Get Get One Free, of Equal or Lesser Value. I’m honestly pretty dissapointed in Collin and the rest of the Hipsters in situations like this… I love deals, don’t get me wrong- LOVE deals! But these kinds of coupons and sales are going to stop if people keep taking advantage- feigning innocence, looking out for #1- etc.

      • Jan

Different strokes for different folks. Manufacturer’s change there exclusions often, example: sometimes they will state no travel/trial other times there is no mention of travel/trial. If they didn’t *want* you to buy it then they would lust it in the coupon, each and everytime. It’s not coupon fraud!!! If it’s not a deal ou feel comfortable doing, pass on it, but don’t shoot the messenger 😉

        • Tabatha

Woo Hooo Jan u Tell them.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I personally think this isn’t unethical at all. Manufacturer’s are smart! 🙂 They know if they don’t put product exclusions on a coupon, that people will try to use them to get the most bang for their buck. That’s why most P&G coupons do have a ton of exclusions.

I follow the exact wording on a coupon, so using it in this way doesn’t seem wrong to me. But of course, everyone is entitled to their own opinion on this topic. 🙂

      • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Also, I forgot to make a point to say that the free conditioner is up to $6.99 in value. P&G knows that the 10 to 12 oz conditioners don’t retail for even close to that amount.

        • Alea

Honestly – they do retail in some areas for close to that amount – I get a lot of free product coupons that are so far away from what I pay here (metro Detroit) and have been told by more than one manufacturer it’s because they average the cost across the country – so people anywhere can redeem their free product coupon for free. For example, Oscar Meyer bacon is around $2.50-3 at my Kroger and Meijer – my free package was up to $7 over twice the amount. Couponers get so used to how much we pay that we forget how much things tend to retail for especially in areas with a higher cost of living (ie, Chicago or New York City).

          • debra

You are so right. I live on Cape Cod and the majority of the time the products are priced more than the coupon value and I have to pay the difference.

      • crystal

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you Collin, When you have 9 sibling to help out every tip helps..im a new coupon clipper and I never imagined I could save so much.

      • janel

Agreed. Follow the wording of the coupon! They put it out. 🙂

    • Laura

Yeah, I can also see this being a huge hassle with cashiers. I can see many of them not wanting to take off the smaller one even though *technically* they can.

      • Laura

I meant to write “larger one”

      • Paige Harwell

I did this deal at HEB 2 nights ago. The coupon said ANY shampoo and you get a conditioner or styler free up to $6.99 so if you buy a shampoo the conditioner or styler should remove when coupon is scanned. There is nothing wrong with using the coupon as it says. I could see if you were scamming the system but it does not specify a specific size for the shampoo so its not wrong to buy the small shampoo and get the big conditioner free in my opinion. Everything helps my family so that free large conditioner will save me money for a couple months and I do not feel guilty in the least bit. 🙂

    • Jane

I agree, and have never understood why stores even let people use a BOGO free plus another coupon…to me the BOGO is “the” coupon and you would need to buy more to use any other coupon. I personally don’t even try to do it but am impressed with the deals people can get 🙂

      • Vic

In my opinion it is correct to buy the smaller shampoo and get the bigger size of conditioner free. Not too ling ago, there was a coupon with crest but it DID specify the “free”item has to be the smaller size. And this does not state it, so it is the correct usage. What I think is wrong if you use another cent off coupon on the purchased item. If you read the fine print it states “one coupon per specified item(s)”. In my opinion BOGO coupons always attach to both items, otherwise you are not able to use! Yes, CVS allows you to use a cent off coupon with a bogo coupon unless the coupon forbids it! My CVS is pretty coupon friendly, and I don’t want it to change just to save another buck or two. I am saving SOOO much money with them, that I don’t mind as well. I can think of numerous moneymakers with them.

    • Laura

Actually the insert in the paper says ‘of equal or lesser value’, they just failed to print it on the coupon… I am sure after this they won’t make that mistake again!

  3. bdm

Did you have to tell the cashier to ring it up in a special way or can you just let them ring both up and it’ll automatically deduct?

  4. Jenna

Thanks Collin! Don’t forget hip2savers that the 23.7 oz family size bottles at CVS count towards spend $15, get $5 ECB monthly deal!

  5. dani

at rite aid you can use a “cents off” coupon with a Bogo coupon!! usually makes for a great deal!!

  6. Queenjen87

The big bottles count toward a monthly deal at CVS of Buy $15 get $5 ecb. So if you buy 4 at 6.99 You would pay 13.98 after 2 bogos (10.98 if you can use the $3/2 listed above) you would get back $5 ecbs (total 5.98) and have 27.96 toward beauty club. You could also do one more set (6 total) pay 6.99 more and get another $5 ecb so 7.97 for 6 big bottles and get a total of 41.94 toward beauty club ($5 when you reach 50). Even better deal if you have a % coupon 😉

    • Melissa

Percent off coupon won’t apply because they are on sale for $5.99

      • Jennifer

I thought that was next week they are on sale, this week is reg price at 6.99, but I could be wrong

  7. Amber

I know at walmart you can’t double stack manufacturer coupons but im excited to get this deal!! I just got a lot of these coupons!!!

  8. Kaylah

I’m not sure it works like that… I’m pretty sure they will make you pay for the most expensive item, and get the cheaper item free.

    • Jan

They can’t. The coupon specifically states buy one shampoo get the conditioner free. Not buy any of the two and get one free 😉

  9. shannyn

Walgreens has a sale right now 2/$6.00 with a $2.00 RR. So just $.50 each:)

  10. Jennifer

I did it at Walmart today using two bogo coupons and the $3/2…free!!! And huge sized conditioners 🙂

    • Kristen

I think that’s what I’m going to do!! You bought four bottles right? I would do it at Cvs I try to get the whole $6.99 overage but my cashiers told me cvs does not do overage so if the coupon automatically does that, they’d probably try to fix it. I think I’ll do it at Walmart! Did the bogo coupon scan or have to be keyed in?

  11. alice

I used one of the bogo coups with a free product coupon that I think I got on Facebook recently. Pretty sweet deal!

  12. Collin (Mrs. Hip)

On the coupon it states that you will get a FREE conditioner or Styler with the purchase of a shampoo, so the cashier has to deduct for the conditioner (not the less expensive shampoo) since that’s what’s stated on the coupon. Hope that makes sense! 🙂

  13. Ashley

I might try this deal but I’m nervous because wouldn’t the cashier give you the cheapest item free? I know thats not what the coupon says but if anyone trys the deal let us know! Thanks 🙂

    • Mel

They have to go by what the coupon says, since it doesn’t mention value and only mentions buy shampoo get conditioner free. Try it and you’ll gain more confidence & be less likely to miss out on a great deal 🙂 I’d you have a problem cashier, try another one. Good luck!

I’ve done it before with deodorant. Bought travel size and got a full size body wash free.

      • ashley

Thanks for the advice Mel! I’ll give it a shot!

  14. Jen

At CVS, it automatically took off $6.99 when the coupon was scanned. I bought 2 bottles that are on sale 2/$7 and only paid 0.01 plus tax for every 2 bottles I bought.

    • Alea

That seems like the better deal!

    • Jenna

This might not happen for everyone, the cashier could (and should) adjust it down to $3.50

      • Ashley57

That always happens to me at CVS. There is something wrong with their computer system. My cashiers say they aren’t even able to adjust it down.

        • Kristen

I was told once that they get reimbursed for the full amount of the coupon so they can’t adjust it down. That’s probably not true, but that’s the explanation I got when I pointed out that it should be adjusted down 😉

      • Jen

You’re right! However, it’s worth trying. I didn’t realize that it was deducting the full amount when I went but after I realized it I went back the next day and used the rest of my coupons. Both cashiers that I had didn’t even try to adjust it down. I guess it just depends on the cashier that you get.

    • Eunice

Hey Jen, I did that same transaction on Sunday, unknowingly it was goin to deduct the $6.99 on my 2/$7 shampoo/conditioner transaction. Too bad I only had 2 coupons on me that day. The next day, I found a newspaper with inserts that someone tossed in our community recycle bin. So I thought to attempt the transaction again. Unfortunately, it was a different scenario. The cashier scanned and saw that it deducted the entire amount and voided it and manually entered it (boo). That day I went 2 CVS stores and no success. I guess it was a one time deal for me.

      • Jen

I’m sorry it didn’t work out the 2nd time, Eunice. :/ Maybe you can try again with the first cashier you went to?

        • Eunice

I know right? But I was in a different town about 1 hour away from home 🙁 Oh well, I’m grateful I got a few of them free.

          • Renee

I took 4 of the BOGOs and my free facebook Aussie coupon purchasing the 2/$7 ones and the CVS register took $6.99 off every time. So I paid tax for each ones I bought-however, I did not get an ECB. I live in Ohio and it was not in the circular or tagged on shelf.

            • Jean

My cashier deleted the $6.99 off that rang up automatically and changed it to $3.50 off at CVS. Darn it! Still a decent price for 2 bottles though.

  15. Melissa

If I have a free product coupon can I use it with the b1g1 offer. Would the coupon pay for the one I have to get and the other one would be free?

    • Susan

      yes, you can

  16. angeline

Well I had a better deal at CVs this coupon is actually deducting the full value of$6.99 so you get two free since there on sale at two for 7. I got 4 used two bogo coupons and one of the 3.00 off 2 giving me The overage…awsome deal.super excited.

  17. Veronica

If you use the buy BOGO at Walgreens you end up only paying a $1.00 for both products. Herbal Essence is on sale for 2/$6.00. Use the coupon to get the conditioner for free and then get back a $2.00 Register Reward for buying two items. This may have been mentioned already bot sure.

  18. Aileen

Can someone please tell me where to get the $3.00 off 2?
    Thanks!

    • Pat

08/05 RP. There is a coupon database at the top of the page, just type in what coupon you are looking for and it will tell you which insert it is in. Just remember though that coupons are regional so you may have not received it.

  19. Leisa

On sale at Walgreens this week 2/$6 get 2rr. I used a $3 coupon so before tax .50!

  20. edy

My friend bought 10 boTtles big pantene $5.99 each used 5 bogo cpns and 2/1dlrs she didn’t have more 1dlr cpns to use towards the one she was buying and she got 20 bucks its a 7 times deal buy $90 get 30 bucks but it ends 9/29 buy 15 get 5 bucks the same deal-it could be pantene or herbal big bottles

    • Jorge

Edy @ what store did your friend do this?

      • edy

Jorge, cvs its a was called a monthly deal associated with clairol deal at bottom of receipt buy $90 dlrs get 30 bucks u all can do it buying $15 dlrs get. 5 bucks since she did 10 pantene at 5.99 that’s 60dlrs she got 20 bucks she could do big bottles herbal or pantene

      • edy

Jorge, its buy 15dlrs big bottles of pantene or herbal. U all could buy 10 bottles @ 5.99 use 5 bogo cpns and 5/1dlrs cpns on P&G book the 1dlrs are applyed to the ones ur buying if the register at cvs auto deducts it takes $6.99 if irt doesntr make sure she manually puts $5.99 since there the big bottles or if u choose to herbal shampoos big bottles I would buy 12 big bottles and use 6 bogo cpns and 3 3/2 cpns on red plum 8/6 those be applyed to the ones that are purchase. So its 15X7 times and all this goes to beauty club! I hope this helps u have until 9/29 to do this deal. And all this is in their cvs policy about applying this cpns. They cvs and manufactures know that this its how they get everyone on their stores. And they know what cupons are up there too. I been cuponing for 18 years! And thanks collin, for everything u do post! It takes a lot of patience. I get the sale papers a week ahead and I still don’t prepare because, my busy lifestyle. Thanks to all and please do post any clearance finds. My cvs allows me to use their scanner when looking for clearance items so, I do thank my cashiers and managers also.

    • Anita

where did you get the info regarding buy $90 get $30 bucks back? was this at Walgreens or CVS?

      • kylie

It might help to read the post. HTH!

  21. Aimee

So glad I listened to my intuition at target today and put my herbal essence back. Now I’m in for a sweeter deal with my coupons!!!!!! Thanks 😀

  22. Jorge

at what store did your friend do this, Edy?

  23. estela

ok so i have a coupon for a free herbal essence up to 3.99 can i use that with the B1G1 coupon\??????

    • Susan

      yes

  24. Leyia

what about the Pantene BOGO that was under the herbal essence BOGO coupon. The pantene are buy one Get 50 off this week.

    • Laura

I used them at Target. Buy 2 shampoos and 2 conditioners (25.4 oz) for $5.54 each after BOGO pay 11.08 plus there was a Target store coupon in the paper where you get a $5 GC when you buy 3 of that size.

Also, at my Target (maybe a glitch in the system so might have been fixed by now) they took off the full value of the coupons, $6.99 each! So I paid $8.18 for 4 big bottles and got $5 GC for next trip making it $3.18!! 79 cents each!

      • Laura

Oh and if you are lucky, you might find a bottle with a $1 store coupon attached. I found one 🙂

  25. anneleise

Im new and need help with the best thing to do. I am going to Tops tomorrow and they have the following deals. pantene 2/7. – so if i go, and use my bogo coupon i would be paying 3.50 total correct? also whats the better situation/couple deal. *clairol herbal essence or aussie shampoo 2/5 – tops deal, i have 1/2 for two aussie products OR my bogo for herbal essence. is it a better deal to use the bogo coupon and get the herbal essence?

  26. anneleise

Also is there anyone on here that breaks down the Tops add? I live in NW pa 🙂

    • Jennifer

Try crazy about savin . Com or Suzy saver wny .com. Using the bogo on the herbal essences would seem like the better deal to me. However, I usually don’t buy much shampoo at tops unless it’s part of a gas points promo. It’s usually a way better deal at one of the drug stores like CVS. Hope this helps! 🙂

  27. Tiffany

At CVS they have a month long promo I think, I did it this week. Buy $15 worth of Pantene or Herbal Essence and get 5ecb. The limit is 7 offers. I have done it three times. The big bottles that are like 25 oz or so are 5.99. Buy 3, use bogo and 3/2. Pay 8.98 + tax, get 5 ecb back, you also get 17.97 toward beauty club total. Thats four dollars for 3 huge bottles. My price is a dollar each for the small bottles.

  28. dee

These are cheaper at walgreens this week sale price $3 and get $2rr when you buy 2.Use the bogo coupon, pay $3 and get $2 rr = $0.50 each

  29. Fanny

Wow, that sounds like a great deal! Does anyone have extras that they would like to trade? I have a lot of the $5/2 Covergirl coupons & several razor coupons for men and women. Ask I may have what you need, except any coupons from this past weekend 😉

      • mabel

Haha NOW it decides to upload all my comments after trying 5 times!

  33. Angela

I was clipping my coupon to do this deal and noticed on the page to the left that it does actually say “Buy One Shampoo and Get a Conditioner of Equal or Lesser Value”

  34. Bailey

Ok so i just got back from CVS and i didn’t really have a lot of time because i was on lunch so i didnt want to go crazy and get a bunch of bottles so here is what i did: I did one transaction and got…

1 reg size bottle of Pantene shampoo
1 big bottle of Pantene conditioner
1 reg size bottle of Herbal Essence shampoo
1 big bottle of Herbal Essence conditioner

I used a $3 off $15 cvs coupon first and then handed her:
    B1G1 Pantene
    B1G1 Herbal
    $1 off Pantene

She said i couldn’t use the $3/2 Pantene coupon and she ALSO said i couldnt use the $1 off Pantene but i KNEW i could use the Pantene coupon so i kind of argued with her and she said well fine i can try it and it worked! So im kind of interested to see if she would have tried the $3/2 coupon if it would have worked.

All in all i spent $2.33 which is not bad at all! I was happy because she took the full $6.99 off for the conditioner when they were actually priced at $5.99. I really wish each store would be consistent so we would have to go through all this trouble sheesh! lol oh well im still happy 🙂

She was right–you were only paying for 1 Herbal Essences, so you couldn’t use $3 off of 2. However, you were right with the Pantene–You were paying for 1 and could use the $1 off 1.

  35. edy

Bailey! On the 3/2 she was correct! U can use 1dlr cpns pantene those applied to the ones ur buying to be able to use ur 3/2 I would have bought 6 shampoos pantene use 3 bogoscpns 1dlr cpn pantene and ur 3/2 cpn pantene. Since 3 free and 3 ur buying. But cashiers, they don’t know policys and some managers either. There too busy always! But, everyones opinion counts

    i have a question

i have a bogo coupon for garnier fructicxe and now rite aid has a sale for bo get 50% off and i need to spend 14 $ as i have already spent 2$ from my previous buy of the same product.

  37. Tina

I got 6 herbal shampoos and 6 conditioners plus 2 dawn paid 2.32 awesome thanks cashier said that coupon is broken and she hopes they get reimbursed for full amount.

  38. nancy

I went to Walmart n the dumb store manager refused to give me the bottles free, she said I was wrong, n how was she going to let me get a more expensive bottle for free, I don’t usually argue so I just looked at her, explained it and she kept arguing the same thing, what can I do?

    • Tarin

I wish I had read this before this morning! I just went to Walmart and the manager was soo rude to me and my mom! They wrote on the coupons, so I hope that I can still use them elsewhere but I doubt that I can 🙁

  39. kerri

Nancy avoid Walmart with coupons…it seems that there unwritten policy it to be jerks about coupons. Plus after reading through the comments you may actually get a better deal elsewhere…

    • Leyia

Yes and be careful with walgreens. The BOGO pantene coupon only applies to the 50% off one this week sale makes the deal not so great. Buy one reg price, get one 50% off, then they applied BOGO coupon to the 50% so two for price of one but without a sale their prices are outrageous.

  40. ccre_21

Did this deal at CVS since they allow a “cents off coupon” with BOGO for a .50 cent moneymaker! got 3 shampoos (small bottle) $10.50, 3 big conditioner bottles $5.99/ea = $17.97.

used 3 BOGO coupons (each took off max value of $6.99, cashier didn’t adjust it down!)
    used 1 $3/2 MQ
    subtotal: $4.50+tax
Earned: $5 ECB and $28.47 count towards beauty club reward!

I also got a free nuance am/pm cream, and 4 wet n wild nail polishes earlier this week! 🙂

    • ccre_21

i paid with $4 ECBs and the tax, i paid off using a P&G rebate card so no Out of pocket for me this week!!! 🙂 i am a haaappy couponer!!!

Count do more over the past 2days no more left. But, also wiLl get beauty bucks today! Since I did this wednesday evening. Hurry go!

  44. edy

    • tiffany

      edy
can you write out your transaction for me?
did you buy all the bottles in teh same transaction or did you do 7 since you said there is a limit of 7
      THANKS!

  46. Nancy

I went to CVS today. Here is my transaction:

    1 Colgate toothpaste.
Used 1.00 coupon in 9/9/12 newspaper
    Paid 2.17, received 2.00 ECB

    2 Pantene Shampoo (3.99 ea)
2 Herbal Essences Shampoo (3.50 ea)
    2 ID Gum (0.99 ea)
    Used BOGO Pantene coupon
    Used BOGO Herbel Essences coupon
    Used BOGO ID gum coupon
    Used 2.00 ECB
    Paid 0.09

The cashier was very friendly! She didn’t adjust the coupons making my total spent only 2.26!! I figured I would get the toothpaste because I would end up paying a little over 1.00 for the Pantene and Herbal Essences shampoo. So why not pay 2.00 and get toothpaste and 2 packages of free gum! 😀

  47. edy

Marissa, if u buy 10 bottles pantene @ $5.99 each that’s. That’s $59.99 – 29.95 from using 5 bogo cpns – 5 dlrs 1dlr cpns pantene = pay 24.95 that’s either cash or bucks. I had 10 bucks so, I paid cash $14. Plus tax but, my purchase was $60dlrs so, for every 15dlrs. I got 5 bucks back. So, for my purchase of 10 bottles I got $20 bucks so that’s 4X15 so, if I buy $45 dlrs more of herbal big bottles or big pantene have until 9/29 I wiLl get 15 bucks for every 15dlrs purchase I get 5 back That will end my limit & plus I get beauty bucks too. Some cpns herbal or pantene will auto deduct $6.99 but mine they didnt

  48. Renee Jackson Holcomb

Publix has Herbal Essences for $2.49 each, if you get 2 shampoos at $2.49 each, then use 2 BOGO conditioner free can get all four (4) for $4.98

  49. Laura

You can also use the $3/2 from RP 8/5 with this deal:)

  50. Chrystal

My flyer for CVS says only ONE rewards offer per household for the Herbal Essence deal. Is it different in different states? I’m in Indiana…
