Beware of the Black Friday Hype

There are a ton of great deals to be had on Black Friday. However, as I mentioned in my Black Friday Shopping Tips post (#6), be sure the deals you snag are actually great deals. I wanted to point out a couple deals in the Toys R Us Black Friday ad that may not be the best deals you can get…

Crayola Crayons and Markers 50% Off
These items seem to me to be very over-priced at Toys R Us. If you stocked up during all of the killer back to school deals I posted about in July and August, you’ll definitely want to skip over this deal knowing you paid rock bottom prices for your school supplies!

40% Off LEGO Toys
While some of the LEGO deals listed in the Toys R Us Black Friday ad cost less than you would pay on Amazon.com, there are several that would be cheaper to buy on Amazon. Research your deals before you go, to be sure you are not paying more than you need to, especially since Amazon offers FREE Super Saver Shipping on orders over $25, or with an Amazon Prime Membership.

Head on over here to check out the Toys R Us ad scan and all the other deals available.

It shows that their game rugs are 40% but have no idea what the normal prices are! It seems like they have a lot of stuff with percentages off but no prices listed…very tricky! Disappointed they dont have more Thonas stuff this year…I guess that means im saving money this year lol

    • tracy

There was a great wooden thomas deal when the big book came out. They had $30 off $90 sets, $15 off $45 and get a free building when you buy $100 worth. We got $200 worth of toys for $100. The sale is still going on but you would have to check your store for stock.

    • Melissa Buker

You can usually get great deals on Thomas stuff at AC Moore and Michaels 🙂 They always have the 40 and 50% coupons in the paper and they have good prices on the wooden train stuff 🙂

      • D

Thanks for the tip about the wooden Thomas trains. My son is getting a train track and trains this year – every penny we can save is great! 🙂

        • MommySpendsLess

          If you don’t have a train table, here’s a great idea: https://www.younghouselove.com/2012/09/all-abord-the-train-board/

We did something similar with a wooden train set I picked up during Target’s January toy clearance. I just wish I’d been smart enough to make it fit under the couch like they were!

    theres no ad there.

    • A

      nevermind .

  3. kate

Is it me or does it seem too early to be thinking about Black Friday. I can’t believe it is only 10 days away.

    • Ashley

I agree! I just looked at my calendar yesterday and was shocked when I realized thanksgiving is NEXT week! Lol.

  4. Elaine M

What about the FP dollhouse? Is that really half off at $39.99?

    • dorie nichols

yes, but it is amazing. my daughter played with it frequently for 4 years. And it still is in perfect condition for when my other daughter is older.

  5. MommySpendsLess

I wouldn’t recommend the Mobigo. I got one for my daughter for her third birthday, when I found a great clearance deal. Maybe it’s because we’re used to Apple products, but she and I both find the touch screen very frustrating. It has no sensitivity. A simple task, like dragging an object from one side of the small screen to the other takes ME 3-4 tries. Another simple game that involves tracing lines and simple shapes (like triangles) is also very hard for the same reason. She’ll play it for a few minutes here and there but we always end up having to help because she gets frustrated.

    • Amber

I think it’s a little bit of age thing. I got my daughter one for Christmas last year and she loves it. It took her a little while to get into it, but she plays it quite a bit now. She was 3 at Christmas and is 4 now. As far as the touch screen sensitivity, it is a little bad. However, unlike most touch screen products, you can use your finger nail and press a little and it works great. I would recommend it also for durability. My daughter is not always that careful and has dropped hers several times. It still works great! I’m sorry your experience wasn’t good. I hope you’re having a great week!!

      • MommySpendsLess

Amber – Thanks for the fingernail tip! I wonder if a stylus would work then….? I’ll have to check that out. The problem is definitely not getting hard enough pressure. It seems like the pressure also has to be perfectly consistent when you’re dragging or tracing – which even I find very difficult to achieve given how firmly you have to press to begin with. They probably designed it that way on purpose assuming kids would naturally press hard and to increase durability.

I agree that the system is very durable and the games are cute, easy enough for preschoolers, with a mild educational slant and the sound and graphics are pretty good for an inexpensive kiddie gaming system. If the touch screen worked better (or at least the way I think it should work) I’d have nothing but good things to say about the Mobigo. As it is though, it’s just frustrating for all of us.

    • Holly

Perhaps it is a bad unit? We got one a year and a half ago when my daughter turned 4. Works great and she loves it! She has about 10 games and they all work fine. Have heard that other people have had problems with the screen shorting out if the pop up screen gets dropped. That happened to a friend and the company sent a replacement.

    • sara

We have 3 Mobigo’s for our kids and they never seem to be working properly. We have already returned one. The sensitivity is bad on it, and the batteries die so quickly. We are looking at getting them some sort of tablet or possibly iPhone, but certainly don’t want to spend $200!

      • MommySpendsLess

Sara – I was lucky that the one I got came bundled with the adapter.

I was thinking the same thing about getting our daughter a tablet. Walmart.com has several 7″ Android tablets starting at $59. There’s one on sale for $99 that has awesome reviews – most from parents who bought it for their kids. Our daughter just asked for a camera but even the kiddie cameras (VTech, Fisher Price) are $35-$55. At that price point for a little more I could get something that also lets her play games and watch movies. I’d love to get her an iPad but it’s just not in the budget.

  6. Jessica

can i price match the BOGO skylander at Walmart?

    • Emilytwinmom

I was wondering the same thing, it’s not on any characters from the giants game but who cares – we don’t have half of the first round of characters LOL!

      • Ib

as long as it has a price listed in the ad along with the BOGO words than yes. But if the ad just says BOGO with no price you cannot price match.

  7. Ana

I am thinking about getting a LeapFrong LeapPad for my 5 year old. Does anyone have experience with the LeapPad?

    • dorie nichols

My daughter got one for her birthday in March and she loves it. She already had alot of games for the explorer and they work with both so she didn’t need many new games. We have loved leapfrog products for several years though so yes I recommend it!

    • Christina

Ana – my 5 year old loves her LeapPad! As a teacher and mother, I highly recommend it!

    • Ana

Thank you ladies! I am trying to decide between the LeapPad and the Tabeo, my concern about the LeapPad is that i will have to keep buying additional games for it and he’ll only enjoy it for a year or two, verses the Tabeo that has lots of free apps….hmmm decisions decisions 🙂

  8. Michelle

We have a ToysrUs express in our mall. Will these prices be good there too? Otherwise the nearest is an hour away.

  9. Stacy

Is 40% off Lego Friends the best deal? or can I find them less somewhere else?

    • Melissa

You should check Lego.com. Those prices are the retail cost. Toys r us are usually overpriced on Lego. Target generally sells the sets for the same price as Lego.com and sometimes they have sales. You can also use your target red card for 5% off.

  10. CC

How does black friday work at Babies R Us? Will there be separate deals/sales/flyers or just the baby items from the Toys R Us flyers? Thank you everyone for your help.

    • Sophie

The only baby deals I noticed when scanning the ad were $5 wipes (babies r us brand, 432 ct) and $10 diapers (babies r us brand, 48-84 ct). A friend told me that in the past any toy that was sold at Babies R US was part of the Toys R US black Friday Ad.

  11. desi brown

    no $10 diaper boxesthis year???

    • Sophie

They have the Babies R US brand 48-84 ct diapers for $10 in the ad.

  12. Katie

Do you think the same deals will be online on Black Friday? Last year I went out late on Thanksgiving night to score some deals at Toys R Us, only to find out they were also online. With ShopRunner’s free shipping, it’s better to shop online if you can get the same deals, I think!

  13. ANA

Does anyone know if I can price match at Walmart ?

  14. Annie

Is the 40% off Lego only the sets listed in the ad or is is all Lego sets?

  15. melinda

Does anyone know if we can shop their black friday sale online to avoid the lines?

    • Theresa

“Toys R Us doors will remain open until 10 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 23 to accommodate the millions of shoppers looking to snap up these extraordinary deals on toys, games, plus video systems and games. Consumers can also take advantage of the same Thanksgiving weekend deals and discounts at Toysrus.com beginning Thursday, Nov. 22 at 8 p.m.

Below are examples of select doorbusters available at Toys R Us stores nationwide and online at Toysrus.com beginning Thursday, Nov. 22 at 8 p.m. through Friday, Nov. 23 at 10 p.m., while supplies last (no rain checks):”

      From the following website:
      http://www.examiner.com/article/toys-r-us-reveals-best-deals-on-toys-and-video-games-for-black-friday-2012

Assuming it’s true, we CAN make purchases online!

  16. Theresa

Are the Toys R Us Black Friday deals available online or only in store?

  17. Rebecca

I have the same question as Annie. I was planning on going tonight because I thought it was 40% off all LEGO, but now that I look at the ad again I realize that it might just be 40% off the sets in the ad :'( Does anyone have any insight into this??

  18. Alesha

I was wondering the deal at toys r us if you spend 75 you get a 10 gift card. If the original item that was purchased is returned can you get a full cash refund or is it only in store credit?
