Beware of the Black Friday Hype

There are a ton of great deals to be had on Black Friday. However, as I mentioned in my Black Friday Shopping Tips post (#6), be sure the deals you snag are actually great deals. Here are 2 examples of tool sets that may not be the best deal you can get…

Kobalt 20-pc. Ratchet Set $24.97 (reg. $29.98)

Kobalt 30-pc. Standard/Metric Mechanics Tool Set $24.97 (reg. $29.97)

At only $5 off, these tool sets are not a good deal. There are much better deals on tool sets at Lowe’s on Black Friday, including the Kobalt 41-Piece Mechanics Tool Set $24.98 (reg. $49.98) mentioned above. Although the price is the same, you are getting more for your money!

Last year, my dad went to Lowes to pick up this ladder that he had to have. He went right when it opened. I went a little later for a fire pit. When I was in line, the cashier told me that you could get online and order the black friday items and put to pick up in store. Then, you would not have to get there at the early opening time!

Yes, I did this last year. I got a great toaster oven for my mom at half price online.

It could be a little risky though. I did that a month or so ago with the 1/2 price canning jars. When I got there they could not find them and said they sold out and it was a mistake that they accepted my order online. I called before driving 65 miles to the store to make sure they had my order and to pull it and they said it was fine and it would be ready for me. Then when I got there they couldn’t find my order. I wasted a lot of time. They offered me half price on a few jars that were out on the floor, but they were NOT the size I wanted, they were huge.

65 miles for 1/2 price canning jars????

    • Laura

Except that multiple people said they did that and their orders were cancelled due to so many people doing the same thing!

    • Kristin

The problem with that is, if someone has it in their cart and is still shopping, you are able to purchase online still cause the store doesn’t know that a customer has it in their cart. So if its a limited quantity to be safe you should get there sooner than later. Or else your order can get cancelled.

Yes, but last year you could order online on Thanksgiving, while the store was closed ( I assume they will do the same this year as well). I did that and had no issue whatsoever. Picked up my lovely cheapie ShopVac late on Friday with no lines and no crowds. I hate crowds.

There may be much better deals on other tool sets, but this is a very good deal on the double drive tool sets because these are tool sets like no other!!! they’re not your ordinary tools – thanks for the tips on purchasing online – cause that’s my game plan this yr!!

My lowes was out of the shop vac last year. BUT they ordered it for me at the Black Friday Price! LOVE THEM! Plus they offered me my 10% Military Discount too! We also bought a large fire/water safe for 16 guns, for under $300 amazing deal! They are so great to their customers!

Just curious what Black Friday lines/crowds are like at places like Lowe’s or Home Depot?

    • tish

i was wondering the same thing! my Lowe’s is not around any other stores so i’m thinking it might be pretty easy to get in and out of, but i’m not sure i really want to try it.
I have NEVER shopped on black friday because i was a manager at JC Penney for 7 yrs!! after having to work it for so long, i just don’t like to put those ppl thru it!

      • Jennifer

The lines are not bad at all at the registers. The only waiting I’ve had to do in the past was to order a refrigerator which took only about 15 minutes until the associate was available. They have plenty of staff working. 🙂

  5. irene

Completely off topic… love your new “coupon” art for Thanksgiving! It’s so festive! 🙂

  6. Viv

Can you use the USPS 10% off coupon on Black Friday purchases?

    • midget

      Yup.

  7. Annabella

Does anyone know of a store that will let you purchase their Black Friday deals on major appliances but wait for delivery? We want to take advantage of the deals but want to have them shipped to our new home in April/May? Any ideas?

    • Wendy

We were able to purchase appliances and wait for delivery a few years ago.

      • Annabella

Wendy- From where? So far Best Buy and Sears says you must take delivery within 90 days….
