Just got this for Christmas! Love it!
I have one of these, thanks to my mom, but I cannot keep the rust off of it, even when I towel dry after hand washing. ;( I bought the glazed one from Kohls at Christmas and <3 it! No rust! Maybe I'm doing something wrong?! Do tell!
Alyssa, I’m pretty sure you’re not supposed to use water to clean cast iron pots. Do a google search to find out the exact process involved. Good luck!
Do you season it again after washing and drying it?
Hi Alyssa- I love cooking with cast iron and have finally gotten rid of rust issues! To clean my cast iron pans after use, I clean it with only very hot water and a firm scrub brush. (Never use soap!) For stubborn residue, I use salt as a scrubbing agent. Once it’s clean, I put it in the oven, upside down, for 10-15 minutes at 300*. Once it’s cool enough to touch, but not completely cool, I rub a very light coating of vegetable oil all over. I store the pans stacked with paper towels between each one. Hope this helps!
You don’t wash cast iron at all. Just wipe and go with little oil in it when stored.
Yes. . .WASH cast iron! Some people debate weather to use soap (so I’ll let you decide on that) because the theory is that it can take the seasoning off the pan. Lodge pans are “preseasoned”. Dry it with a paper towel and then throw it in a warm oven to finish drying the pan. Rubbing it with oil is a great idea too after you clean it.
I actually had this exact item on my wishlist! It was $27 when I added. Good deal!
It is saying no longer available. So sad! Really wanted this one!
Ha! This is the exact same pot my husband asked for for Christmas (and got). He uses it to bake bread in our wood stove and fry eggs on the top of it. He loves it!
Fry eggs on the top of it? As in on the lid? I’m intrigued, please tell.
I know someone who does the same thing, they flip the lid upside down to do it.
Oh, no:-). I meant he fries the eggs IN the pot on top of the STOVE:-). Sorry for the confusion, but it sounds like (via Steph) it can be done in the lid!
you can bake biscuits inside while you cook eggs on outside…or make an egg/sausage/bacon/potato and cheese casserole inside and bake the bread on top…just a thought.
so glad I decided to open up Hip2Save when I did. I would’ve cried if I missed this one since I have had it on my wishlist since before Christmas. Thanks Collin!
A tip for maintenance: after you towel dry it, rub the entire piece with a light coat of oil (veg, olive, etc). Then place in the oven, set the oven to about 200 degrees, and when the oven is preheated, turn the oven off and leave the pan in the oven. This will prevent any rust, and keep it in tip top shape!
you can use water to wash cast iron…NO SOAP…we put boiling water in to remove stubborn stuck on food. Then dry and coat with oil. We use cast iron all the time as we are involved in Scouting. When it rusts get the steel wool (not sos) out and remove it. Then make some bacon in it (only way I cook bacon now..in the oven in this).

turn on the oven to 350 or so..cut bacon in half toss in cast iron….bake…stir every so often. Won’t be crispy unless you drain the oil. Which I do since my dutch oven is from the early 1900’s and has a spout. Clean up is a snap, drain oil…leave a little bit…wipe with a towel and put it away. Bacon grease is the best way to get your dutch oven seasoned or reseason or just to keep it cooking nicely.
Also, when you use your dutch, make sure during cleaning you check the lid and the rims of both the top and bottom. Those need to be cleaned and oiled as well, or the lid will not sit properly and seal.
Thanks!!! I was wondering if you stirred it or not. Do you leave open with the bacon or cover with the lid.
All Gone 🙁
