Just a huge plea from a cashier. I work for a major East Coast grocery store. I cannot tell you just how much we (all the cashiers) DESPISE cloth bags. They are SO hard to fill groceries w/ b/c you have to hold them open w/ one hand and scan and bag with the other. We have a certain amount of items we have to scan per minute and each time we get one of these bags, that total goes WAAAAY down, affecting our performance ratings.
Cloth bags are great for when you bag your own groceries (I love any customer willing to help out by doing that) or going to the farmer’s market or the beach, etc. Just please, don’t bring them to the stores.

    • Amanda

I got one of these bags back in October and it is one of the nice ones that has a flat bottom so they are easier for cashiers to fill:-) and so much better for the environment.

      • Nicole

Thanks Amanda! those are SO much better. I’m hoping this will be good for the beach/pool for my daughter for summer.

      • mel

Funny how different areas treat their customers. Cashiers here actually prefer if you bring your own bags! I use the bags with flat bottoms too, and sometimes help the cashier (esp if its a large trip)

    • jolynn

Well, that’s not going to happen with me. Really, I can’t believe this is a legitimate request!! Using cloth bags is better for the environment. I do try to help. Maybe instead of asking people to avoid helping the environment, you should demand management change how your performance is rated.

      • Nicole

Please show me where I asked that people not bring in their own bags. I simply made a plea to not use cloth bags b/c they are hard to fill if you have go fast. You do know there are other types of reusable available, right? Instead of immediately being offended, try reading what I wrote first.

        • Amanda

Well, what other types of reusable bags are there besides cloth bags? 99% of the reusable bags I have are cloth. One is something like vinyl as it’s insulated, but it still doesn’t really stand up by itself.

          • Nicole

There’s the kind remade from plastic, there’s paper (which is reusable), there’s vinyl, there’s baskets, there’s even those really really stiff cloth bags that stand up on their own.

            • Amanda

Eh, paper’s no good. It can’t handle a lot of weight and rips easily. A basket like an Easter basket? That would be funny to see!

            • Nicole

LOL, had not thought of that. That would be AWESOME. No, many have wicker or these metal and cloth baskets. I can’t describe it too well. They’re cool, but they hold so much I don’t know how they lift it!!!

      • Heather C.

There are plenty of other ways to help the environment besides using reusable shopping bags. You can easily recycle the plastic disposable ones that the store supplies. If you don’t have recycling service at your home, you can easily bring them back to the store with you the next time you go shopping. Most stores have a receptacle by the entrance just for recycling the disposable ones.

        • Amanda

Actually, I think I’ve only seen a place to recycle plastic bags a few times. My Best Buy used to have a spot to recycle them, but I don’t think they do anymore.

        • Cindy

You can, but plastic isn’t reusable indefinitely. Eventually it becomes useless, unlike glass, steel and other recyclables, and obviously unlike paper, it takes hundreds of years to degrade. I think people want to use it to lessen their dependence on plastic and petroleum-based products and certainly reusable bags do help. Reusable bags may contain some sort of plastic materials in them too, but the durability (assuming you get one that’s not flimsy) and longevity likely outweighs the amount of plastic you accumulate through plastic bags.

    • Amanda (different than the one above)

I’m sorry, but I’m going to continue using my cloth bags as well. They are better for the environment, and until recently I got 5 cents off per bag I used at my supermarket (they no longer do that, unfortunately). Also, almost every time I go to the supermarket, there is a cashier and a bagger at the line. Where do you work that there are not separate baggers? Plus, how can you really have to scan a certain number of items per minute? What if there are no customers for half an hour? Do you get a bad performance rating for that?

      • Nicole

No, they do a formula that figures out how many customers you have per minute, the amount of groceries scanned while dealing w/ the customer, how much time it takes to move the customer through the line, etc. I really don’t know the whole algorithm, but we aren’t penalized for not having customers. The only time the store is empty is late at night – it’s a super popular store. We don’t have separate baggers – ever. That would be wonderful and would move customers through so much faster b/c then I could bag some items while giving some to the bagger. Wishful thinking though. ๐Ÿ™

        • Amanda

Well, that’s too bad (about all of the above). If they want you to be able to handle more customers in a shorter amount of time, they should get baggers! I have been in my grocery store with only a few other people before. I love going at 8pm! Before I moved away from the city, I would sometimes go shopping at 10pm and there would only be one other person in the store.

    • amanda m

I used to be a cashier and I too would get evaluated for items per minute and I have to say cloth bags never slowed me down and I use to like it because that meant I did not have to to the back and carry boxes of bags! And. I am sorta of hippie I personally use my bags EVERYWHERE! ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Lindsay

I’m sure the time it takes to stand up a cloth bag isn’t any more than the time you have to load a new stack of bags, or the time it takes to separate two when they get stuck. Just saying.

I’m curious what store chain you work at? so I can avoid it with my reusable bags.

      • anna marie

it’s sure not publix!!! were they have baggers.try scanning all the items first and then bagging them last.

    • Kristine

At my store, I save $0.05 for every reusable bag I use and only $0.02 for every plastic bag I bring with me. So far, none of my cashiers have made faces at me. They do it every time I come over with my stack of coupons but not with my bags.

Also, my husband often tells them that he’d like to bag our groceries so I don’t think it’s a problem.

    • emily

Hi Nicole, as someone who is eco-conscious, I am really appalled at your statement. I’ll be honest, I really don’t care what the cashier thinks, as It is my money that is being spent.

      • Nicole

Not sure why you’re “appalled” at my statement. You must not have read it. In fact, I think most people just skimmed it and added their own words in. No where did I say don’t use recyclable bags. NO WHERE. No where did I say we make faces at people. (seriously – you got that from where????) In fact, very few people responded to anything I REALLY did say. I said it’s hard to work w/ cloth bags and it’s much easier to work w/ sturdy bags. I don’t know why I’m reiterating this – if you didn’t bother to read the first post, it’s doubtful you’ll bother reading this one either.

  2. jill

    I just ordered mine!! Thankx!

  3. Heather C.

I wonder if you can order more than 1 and still take advantage of the $1 shipping fee…

    • liz

No i tried and the next one is $8.99

  4. Cremme

Our grocery stores no longer carry plastic bags here in the Bay Area. We bring in our reuseable bags, sometimes get paid $0.05 per bag used, and our cashiers happily bag for us. I’ve been using my own bags for years but now that we’re all in this together, I am so proud!

    • Cremme

      *reusable

    • Amanda

I wondered about this when the policy changed. What happens if someone forgets to bring bags? They just can’t shop that day or have to carry things out by hand? Or are paper bags still available? I also bet you can buy a cloth bag in the store, right?

      • Meche

If you don’t have a bag they charge you 5-10 cents a bag.

      • Lindsay

I have stores around me that don’t offer bags. You bring your own or they charge you 5/10 cents for one. Or you can just take all your items own without any bags. Sometimes they offer boxes at the front of the store that are left over from stocking. Yeah it’s annoying.

      • Evelyn

I also live in the Bay Area too and the policy started Jan. 1, 2013. Basically, you have to pay .10 cents for each paper bag if you don’t bring your own bag. I see lots of people walking out of the grocery stores carrying their purchases on their hands because they don’t have a reusable bag and didn’t want to pay .10 cents. Some, who also do not want to pay for the .10 cents, will just put everything back in the cart as it gets rung up and use the cart so that they can transfer their items in the car.

  5. Rebecca

How long do they take to get?

    • liz

I got mine in less than a week

  6. Heather C.

I like the concept of reusable grocery bags, but hardly ever use them… you wouldn’t believe the amount of bacteria that can be found in and on the bags after a few uses. And I definitely would never carry any raw meat products in them. Hubby says I’m “germaphobic”, but I try and explain to him that it’s not that I’m SCARED of germs/viruses/bacteria, I just know WAY too much about all of those sorts of things. More than I would like to know, really! All thanks to my background in the medical field! I’ve learned over the years while trying to educate myself as much as possible about any and every little thing, that sometimes it’s better NOT to know all the facts. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • Amanda

Well, you could wash them after a few uses. Or only put dry goods items in them. I also use reusable bags when I’m couponing at CVS, Rite Aid, etc. Do you also change your kitchen sponge every few days? I use mine for way too long, but luckily have not gotten sick yet and hopefully won’t! You seriously are supposed to change it twice a week; that would be so expensive!

      • Heather C.

I actually don’t use kitchen sponges just for that reason! I do however, bleach my sponge tipped bottle brush that I use to clean sippy cups, every few days. (Just did this last night actually!) And instead of throwing out sponges after a couple days, wet them and nuke them in the microwave for a minute. Or you can make a mixture of bleach water in your sink and soak them in that for about 5 minutes. Either will kill any bacteria living in the sponge. ๐Ÿ™‚

        • Heather C.

I don’t use sponges, but I do use those green scouring pad things. I do the bleach water treatment to those every couple of days for about 2 weeks, then it’s time for a new one. ๐Ÿ™‚

        • Amanda

I have heard about putting them in the microwave but I get the sponges that have the scrubber on one size and I’m afraid that would start a spark or a fire in the microwave. I also mostly use a sponge brush thing where the dish soap is in the plastic handle so I certainly can’t put that in the microwave. You can also put your sponge in the dishwasher but I don’t ever use mine. How do you wash dishes if you don’t use sponges? I don’t/won’t use bleach. It smells horrible and it would probably force my husband out of the house for a day (he has asthma). Plus, I would worry about not all of it being removed from a surface that people eat/drink from, like your sippy cups.

          • Heather C.

I wash dishes by hand… No dishwasher here unfortunately. ๐Ÿ™ I use a thin waffle-weave dish cloth in a sink full of sudsy water. And actually a TINY bit of residual bleach won’t hurt you. I worked at Burger King when I was in college, and when we washed the trays the food is served on, we would rinse them in a sink full of very dilute bleach water. I was shocked that this was the procedure the manager asked me to follow, and actually asked to read in the manual where it said this was how it was to be done. Sure enough, that’s what it said!

            • Amanda

Yeah, but (most) people don’t put food directly on the tray. I would be worried about putting bleach on my dishes. I actually got Soft Scrub with bleach for free after SavingStar rebate that I decided to get to try because my kitchen sink is white but not so white anymore. Regular Comet is not getting it back to white. So when my husband was away this weekend, I decided to try it (so he wouldn’t have to breathe it in). But I was so scared using it because it had a warning on the back to seek help at poison control (or wash your hands with hot water for like 20 minutes or something) if you get it on your skin! I wasn’t wearing gloves and did get a little on my hands (how can you not?) but I washed my hands right away and I was fine. Bleach just freaks me out.

              • Heather C.

Yeah, bleach fumes are pretty harsh. Do you have rusty water? If so there’s a product called “Iron Out”… It comes in a white spray bottle, and it is AMAZING at removing rust stains from sinks, toilets, tubs, etc… No scrubbing needed! It seriously can’t be beat.
Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry

                • Amanda

Heather. I don’t think I can respond to your actual comment because we have already gone too far into the chain. Anyway, no, we don’t have rust in our water. The white sink just looks off-white in places. It’s not as smooth as it once was, so I think stains are seeping into the porcelain. And I’m starting to worry that cleaning with Comet actually did that. I don’t know any better about what to use, and we only bought the house a year ago. It was perfectly white then. But I think the prior owners only used the dishwasher so perhaps just letting things sit in the sink is causing it to show wear.

                  • Heather C.

That stinks, especially because you’ve only been using the sink for a year!

                    • Amanda

Yeah, and it’s even worse if I made it that way! Anyone have any suggestions for cleaning a white porcelain kitchen sink?

                • Amanda

Oh, I guess it did work!

            • anna marie

Amanda, before they had all those different cleaners bleach was used to santitize everything.when i do my dishes in the sink or in the dish washer i add a little bleach and i also soak my dish cloth in water with bleach.

            • summer

Yes! Bar keepers friend removes all stains!!! Magic. It is a powder cleaner. You can find it at whole foods, Publix, even Williams Sonoma

              • Heather C.

I think they’ve got that at Wal-mart too… My mom always used BKF. ๐Ÿ™‚

Awesome, thanks. Maybe I’ll take a look for it.

      • Cindy

Same here, to be honest! Longer than 2 weeks, but less than a month and I’ve never had health issues either. Granted, we do bleach the the sink, cutting boards, knives and the sponge dish often so I think that helps too.

        • Summer

I put my sponge/scrubber in the dishwasher (top rack) every night after doing dishes.

    • mel

oh, so true about the germs/bacteria. That’s why I wash all my reusable bags once a month. I never put meat in them either, I do tell the cashier plastic please!

      • Nicole

I have a few customers who come through w/ really really really dirty, crusty, yucky bags. It’s always so gross filling them. They smell and everything. ๐Ÿ™ I wish they’d wash them out or just run a clorox cloth over them. We’re not allowed to suggest something like that of course.

        • Heather C.

Oh my, that is so gross. ๐Ÿ˜› LOL!

    • Cindy

That’s why it’s important to sanitize them every so often (once a week or whatever), whether it’s washing them with soap then hanging them to dry or using those Lysol wipes and wiping them down to the core. Fact is, there’s bacteria wherever we go and it’s a natural part of our environment and it’s just impossible to eliminate them all. Just by doing a thorough cleaning and then washing your hands after handling them shouldn’t put a damper on your or your family’s health. And I don’t mean for thi to go directly towards you, but I think we’re just so caught up on health scares, breakouts and that total “SANITIZE THEM ALL!” mindset (partially thanks to media and these healthcare/pharmaceutical industry) that really, as long as you take proper precautions and let common sense kick in, nothing’s going to happen to you. I’ve been reusing these bags for a long time and I’m a bit of a germaphobe but not to the extreme, and my family’s rarely ever had stomach issues and things of that nature.

    • liz

I don’t use mine for groceries as much as i do regular shopping and would NEVER put meat in them! Ick!

  7. Em

I have an extensive medical background. Guess how often I wash my bags? When something actually spills on them.

Also, plastic isn’t truly recyclable like glass. It can only be recycled a few times before it becomes unusable. Plastic is crap and should be avoided at all cost.

    • JoAnn

Not to mention how much energy is used and pollution is caused by the recycling process itself.

    • Cindy

Agreed! Recycled plastic are almost never (as far as I know) used to remake a 100% recycled product (if that makes any sense) and it can’t be recycled indefinitely unlike steel, aluminum, glass, etc. It is really convenient I’ll admit, but it’s also one of the biggest pollutants and to be honest, unnecessary product in a lot of the cases.

  8. Krystal

I love reuseable bags! This one looks awsome!
*do u know how much bacteria Is on the bottom of a purse/diaper bag and how many ppl the after they got home from the store or going out they set it on the table or counter! The amount and type of germs would really scare most ppl. So it’s not just reuseable bags and sponges. Germs are everywhere!

    • Heather C.

You are so right! The very reason why my purse never goes on the counter OR table, but straight on the coat hook when I come home. It’s also one of the reasons I use Vera Bradley purses… They’re cotton and wash easily. Plus the fabric designs are ADORABLE!! Love me some VB! ๐Ÿ™‚

Yeah, I always mean not to do that, but guess what? My purse ends up on the kitchen island!

    • Kelly

Just went to the link and saw it is limit one….

  11. mely

Just giving a heads up they do not ship to APO,AP, AE even though it does have the option for it -___- so now my account is locked lol

  12. daltonjsmom

Also, at CVS when I bring my own bags (actually, 2), one cashier will not give me any extra bags to use at all, even if I am buying 2 carts of stuff. The tag says s/th like “bring your own bag with this tag” and receive an ECB every 4 uses or whatever. Has anyone else ever experienced this? It amazes me how much variation there is even b/twn cashiers at chain stores.

    • Tarri

My CVS, does not care if you have one reusable bag or a ton. They use how many you have and then they start putting in the plastic bags and still let you use the green tag. If I only have few items and I forgot my reusable bag I just hand them the green tag and say I am carrying it out by hand.

      • Meredith

FYI, I’m not sure if all CVS have stopped yet but my CVS no longer carries the Green Tags and I was told that they will stop excepting them soon. Possibly as soon as the beginning of March. The cashier told me about it a few weeks ago and yesterday said there was something happening at the beginning of March having to do with the Green Tags but she wasn’t completely sure what.

        • Amanda

I hope that’s not true! I love the free ECB I get from using Green Bag Tags! My supermarket already stopped giving 5 cents per reusable bag. Is Target next?

  13. Amy

Got mine! So much cuter than I expected! Good quality bag and since I do bag my own groceries so that they are packaged RIGHT (cold with cold, don’t rip open meat packages..etc) IT IS GREAT!! We get a five cent credit for each bag we bring. This is an GREAT offer..and the cutest little girls are on my bag…..LOVE THIS OFFER> THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!!!

  14. Steph

Vault has some pretty good quality sturdy totes for $16. I had a $25 credit to use(didn’t even know i had till i got an email today saying they were about to expire). You have to spend $35 to b able to use the credit. so i got 2 ttotes and added something cheap to make it around $35. so just around $11. free shipping. also they had some really cute bracelets an necklaces too and children clothes. Anyhoo if u have any credits its def worth it to look around. might score some stuff! https://bit.ly/YzTxHB

    • Monica

Oh the lemons. Haha that made me smile. An oldie but goodie post!

  16. AMY

Collin…Where did you get that red basket holding the cuties? Sorry off the topic, but I’m in love with that thing! LOL!
Been looking for a cute something to put all my apples, oranges, bananas ๐Ÿ™‚
