To save money we do not have cable. We only stream movies and tv shows, primarily from Netflix. I’m wondering if anyone has used the streaming with Amazon Prime and what you think of it and the selection available?? It is cheaper than Netflix over all and I like the added benefit of free 2 day shipping (on select items) and the discount on diapers and wipes so it is tempting to switch.

I have amazon prime paid. I really do love it because I do shop on amazon a lot. It used to be for baby stuff, but now its more parts for the car, dvds and blue rays, household items, last minute gifts (*cough mother’s day. to my mom in two days 🙂 ), and aquarium chemicals for my DH’s tanks. I don’t use the streaming very often. We have a blueray player that streams netflix and prime. I don’t use the prime very often, but it is nice to watch an older movie on that isn’t on netflix any more. (Pay it forward not to long ago. That is a good movie!) I wouldn’t say drop the netflix and get only prime. Just about everything I order on amazon qualifies for 2 days shipping and I like instant gratification and not having to worry about shipping on small orders or making it to the $25 dollar mark. Overall, get it for the shipping, not the movies. Oh and BTW, when I renewed from the old free amazon mom to the paid I got an offer for $70 off a $100 order (this was in november) of select baby items when you purchase amazon prime. For me it was like paying $9 for prime and buying $100 worth of baby stuff. I got a bed set for my toddler, a leash backpack for the Indy 500, a set of forks and spoons, a foldable potty seat, and a few other small things. That was a nice offer.

I have Amazon Prime and love it for the free shipping. We also use it to stream a fair amount of tv shows that sometimes Netflix doesn’t have. However I still wouldn’t want to give up Netflix because they have a larger selection of content for the flat $9/month. Amazon prime free video selection is just decent IMO.

Can anyone confirm (or deny) that this would include Downton Abby Season 3?? (-:

J, they have Downton Abbey Season 3 but only for purchase. It’s not part of the free streaming. Looks like Season 2 streaming is free.

And The Good Wife is free – my favorite!

If you get this mark your calendar when to cancel!!! I forgot to cancel 🙁 Looks like we’ll be canceling our Netflix for the next year and using this for movies/tv shows instead…don’t want to pay for Netflix on top of the $79 I was just charged for Amazon Prime.

Try contacting amazon customer service and see if they will give you a discount for Prime. Sometimes if you go to cancel they will offer a better deal. Of course that may depend on how often you buy from them, I’m not sure. Still, it’s worth a shot! Their customer service is outstanding 🙂

Contact them, I also forgot and was charged the $79 a few days ago, only used it once and wasn’t planning on using it again. I called and the convo was a full 2 minutes, she was really nice and cancelled and is refunding full amount. A reminder email from them with the canceling option would have been nice but I’m grateful they are refunding

If you do the 30-day trial, you can go to your account settings and choose not to enroll in the automatic renewel. That’s what I did as soon as I began the trial, because I knew I would probably forget to cancel too if I waited!

They usually allow Amazon users to have FREE 30 day trial of prime I think once every 13 months.
I had a FREE 30 days around Thanksgiving 2009 and then again around Thanksgiving 2011. I usually want to wait around the holiday time for some of the better deals since they usually match some of the physical retailers.

I also never understood why they need a credit card on record in order to receive the free prime. When I use amazon, I use gift cards as my form of payment. I told the online support that once my 30 days are over, I do not want to continue the prime. I even told them right away when they did offer a free trial, they still wanted a card on record and then you can cancel the free trial and remove the card.

Andrew – you can easily cancel your membership online once your trial is over. It tells you the date the trial ends and you can cancel prior to that day. I have NEVER had to call customer service to cancel and I have had the free trial several times.

I absolutely love Amazon Prime. As much as I have purchased these last few months on there, it has been worth the money.

If you’re a student, sign up for the student version because at the end of the trial you get the regular prime for 1/2 price for up to 4 years. Can’t beat $40/year! Which reminds me….mine just switched over to regular prime; I’ve gotta start streaming! (Free streaming isn’t offered with the student version).

Amazon Student offers a free 6-month trial with a valid school email address.
