I encountered a situation today, a lady behind me in the check out line, got firing mad because I had coupons, I probably had 20, she abruptly took all her items on the belt and said are you sure you don’t have another stack to give her, I said sorry, but I’m saving money, I’m on a budget, and she replies hatefully. yeah well not on my time, I’d like to know if anybody else ever deals with this during checkout and how do they handle it. This is the first time someone reacted this way, while checking out.

    • Kris

That is a bummer. It is hard at Walgreens because there is usually only one line. It sounds like you handled it well, but it would really upset me too. I have never had a nasty confrontation like that. I occasionally tell the person behind me I have alot of coupons if there are other lines to choose from and always apologize if it is not going quickly because of the coupons, but I have never dealt with anyone like that. Good for you saving money for you and your family, and you were not doing anything wrong so boo to her!

      • Maggie

Thanks Kris for the encouragement, because I just started couponing about a year ago, but this never happened at check out. I’ll keep on saving all I can.

I’ve only been couponing for a few months, but I too have experienced a few less than pleasant people during check out. They will mutter things under their breath towards me, sigh, snicker, make rude remarks, insinuate that I’m poor because I use coupons and ask if I’m going to use food stamps to pay and take up more time, etc. all sorts of things. There are just some really mean and nasty people in the world that want to rain on your parade because someone probably rained on theirs.

I just do my best to ignore those people when I come in contact with them and keep a smile on my face, my Mother always said “If you don’t have anything nice to say, then don’t say anything at all”.

I do however, do my best to find alternative check out lanes if I’ve got a lot in my cart or need to make multiple transactions and know I’m going to tie up the line. Like at Walgreens, I’ll go check out at the beauty counter or the pharmacy, there aren’t as many people there. Same for CVS, check out at the pharmacy. At major grocery stores, well you really can’t avoid that hold up, especially at Wal-Mart… though you can take your stuff to electronics and check out there which is often quicker than waiting in line at the front usually, lol.

    • Veronica

Maggie, sorry that happened to you today. Unfortunately, this does happen, and I can tell you that I have experienced a lot of mean comments from a lot of people. But you just have to put those comments aside and remember why you do what you do and always remember that you are a paying customer too and that you also waited your turn in line, so the person behind you needs to wait as well.

    • Cannielle

Sorry that had happened to you Maggie. I used to be very apologetic when checking out with coupons, but lately I have came to realized it is store’s problem for keeping the lines so long. They should open up another register when there are more than 5 customers in one line, I think. If she asked me if I had another stack I would say,” yes, but I left it home” with a big smile. Ha, that would totally pissed her off!

    • Krista

I’ve never had anyone be flat out rude like that. I’m sorry you had that happen. At Walgreens, when you have a lot of coupons, try to go to the cosmetics counter – they get a bonus for ringing you up, and you aren’t holding up anyone just running in for one item. When I am in a main line, I will always let someone go ahead of me if they just have a few items, but otherwise, it’s tough luck. A transaction takes as long as it takes, and there’s nothing much you can do except be organized with your coupons. Hateful people just ruin their own day, don’t let them ruin yours.

    • neyneyney

I just walk straight with my coupons to the cosmetic register and tell them I have coupon and i dont want to hold up any lines. They always drop everything there doing and check me out. I had store workers thanking me to checking out at the cosmetic counter.

    • Stacy

Just ignore them is what I do know. I used to be so worried I started couponing 4 years ago about what people would say or think. Now I don’t even pay attention to who is behind me. I waited patiently in line for my turn they can do the same thing.

    • Lori

Please don’t ever apologize for using coupons. You carefully took the time out of your day, found them, clipped them, organized them and lined them up with sales/deals to save your family money. Since I have come to follow Hip2Save, I have saved so much money!! Your time is valuable! People who get upset are either jealous that you made the time to clip & save (and they didn’t), or they are in too much of a rush. Society today! Coupons are paper money. Who cares how much money you have or don’t have. I know someone who is rich who coupons, and her attitude is, Why wouldn’t I??? People who look down on others who coupon are the ones with the problem. And though we want to be courteous to others, like someone else above commented, we all have to wait our turns in line. Just brush off the negative experiences keeping in mind you EARNED (worked for) those coupons you are using. And you are just as valuable a person as the ones who don’t coupon. 🙂

      • Marie

I’ve never had anyone say anything but I get looks/stares.

  2. Rebe

Thank you Collin! With the Phazyme, my Boston Globe insert had it, but I am afraid I can already hear it beeping because it exceeds the item value 🙁

  3. veri

    Sorry Maggie,
I would have done the same and would have added sorry for taking your time, but feeding my family is priority may god bless u to never be in my situation.
Hope for a better shopping experience. 🙂

  4. paula

I am sure it will beep but if you have a walgreens like mine that is patient and know what they are doing the associate will just have mark down the manufacture coupon so use the walgreens coupon first, we have 3 walgreens and an associate at one of the stores that i usually do not go to(this is why)tried to tell me she could not use my coupon because it exceeded the amount of the item and i nicely told her she was wrong and to call the manager and he showed her how to do it.

  5. Tina

It worked here in central ca… I got the $3RR after buying 4 for $4.00 then i bought toilet paper with the RR… thanks

  6. Jodi

Help please….I recently couponed and got 20,000 balance points 🙂 (with the flax seed deal) anyway I am unsure can I use balance point to purchase other balance points items, will I still get the points? What about using balance points for RR items? Thank you for your time anyone who answers my question.

    • kt

You can not use your balance points items to get more point. Use them to get RR items, then use the RR items to get more points. hth

    • Krista

As far as I know you *can’t* use Balance Points on another Balance Points item, or you won’t get the points. You can use them to pay for a RR item, and still get the RR. Don’t forget that if you redeem $20, it only costs 18,000 points, not 20,000. But you can redeem in smaller amounts now too.

    • Alissa

Unfortunately, you are not able to earn balance points on a purchase where you redeem balance points. Although, you are able to use RR and earn balance points and vice versa. Hope this helps.

  7. Sharon

I had a checker (beauty counter) tell me last week that I couldn’t use the $2.00 coupon on 2 Colgate toothbrushes. The register wouldn’t take it and she said it was because of the RR connected with it. I have totally given up on Walgreens. I hadn’t been in months, and thought I would try it again. Nevermore.

    • Chels

She was wrong. Cashiers that aren’t knowledgeable make up excuses all the time…the worst ones are when they’re wrong/lying. I’d rather they be honest and just talk to a manager to figure it out. Try calling someone higher up over next time–maybe it’ll be a learning experience for the cashier. The RR will always print regardless of coupon usage. Unless it’s the wrong item, the RRs were rolled, or the catalina machine is acting up, the RR will always print!

  8. Heidi

I think Walgreens check out systems are making it difficult for couponing. I often have problems with “beeping” coupons. But if I turn around and do another exact same transaction, using the same coupons, then they went through. SO sometimes it just beeps for no reason, or what? It is great if I run into a knowledgeable cashier who will just type it in manually, but once I run into those who have no idea about their own policy, it can get frustrating. DOes it only happen to me?

  9. Leah

My walgreens prices really vary. I am in between 2 stores. I go to one and the phayzme is $4.49, but they are out. I go to the other one less than 3 minutes away and the phayzme is $5.29, but they had it in stock. Bought it there, thinking yay no beeping, will just pay the .29 a box oop after both coupons, to not have problems. WRONG, it shows coupon does not match item…lol. Oh well, manager pushed it through and all is A-Okay 🙂

  10. pam

I bought 3, 99 cents Hallmark cards and used my $2.00 off 3 cards. I also got 2000 points. I had no problem. My question is I printed 2 of the Hallmark coupons. Will it allow me to redeem the other coupon and give me 2000 more points? Thanks for all of your help.

    • Cindy J.

Yes, it will. I bought 18 cards, used 6 coupons and got 12,000 points in one transaction.

      • pam

Oh thank you Cindy soooo much!

      • Holly

I just noticed that the Q states “limit 1 coupon per customer”.

  11. anu

I’m confused. the coupon I just printed for the hallmark cards, is a coupon for hallmark stores, how can I use it at Walgreens?

    • Holly

I just printed the Q. The barcode on the left says for Hallmark gold crown stores. And the barcodes on the right says for all other retailers.
