Several years ago, we adopted a rescue dog that required very expensive allergy shots. In looking for ways to save money, I found two companies that sell pet supplies that are way cheaper than 1-800PetMeds or purchasing supplies directly from my vet. Since that time, I have used two companies exclusively–KV Pet Supply and Omaha Vaccine Company.

I was also able to purchase Prednisone for my pup at a VERY discounted rate when compared to my vet’s office or local pharmacy. I now purchase IAMS dog food at BJ’s because I can stack a $1 MFR coupon with a $5 BJ’s coupon. It is much less expensive than the grocery store or Target.

Collin, could you possibly do a post about how your readers save money taking care of their beloved pets? You and your readers always have such great ideas for ways to save!

So with that being said, please share your tips, tricks and secrets for saving money on pet food, supplies, medical treatments etc.

When I was going to get my cat neutered (found out he was already when brought him to vet), they told me about a voucher you could get if you called an 800 # to discount the price. They would FAX the voucher to the vet. I’ve since moved, does anyone know of a lower cost way to spay/neuter? I now have a puppy and she needs to be spayed. The vet wants $265.00 which is why we are waiting.

I would try the humane society or the aspca. They are a lot cheaper.

I never had a dog when I was younger, so Macy is my first pet (Rescue dog!!) It’s amazing how much you can love an animal. Anyway, I had a lot to learn, so I watched SEVERAL youtube videos. I can bath and groom my dog myself. I am comfortable trimming and smoothing her black nails. It just took patience and practice. If I can’t find dog treats for free using coupons, I make them myself. There are millions of easy recipes for this on google.

Ways that I save on pet items is by signing up for the pet stores in my area. Pet World Warehouse emails me a $5 off $25 coupon almost every month. They also have on certain dog food brands buy 10 bags and the 11th free. Petco give you a $5 gift cert when you spend $100. Also they send me 10% off my total purchase and coupons for the dog food I buy which can be combined with manufacture coupons. If you go to the Petco website every month they have at least 2-3 coupons available which can be combined with manufacture coupons. My local humane society and other pet stores offer on certain days discount shots with no office visit fees. Liking pet stuff on facebook also helps. I have been able to print off coupons for free bags of treats. If there is a Menards in your area they sometimes have an 11% rebate on items you buy. They sell the dog food I buy so I get 11% percent back and use the rebate towards the next dog food purchase which also can be combined with manufacture coupons.

If you have more than one pet, bring them on the same visit for the yearly physicals. My vet offers a multi-pet discount when I bring all three.

We bought clippers and nail trimmers/sanders and groom our Yorkiepoo ourselves. We also shop at PetSmart because they frequently send us coupons in the mail as well as includes coupons on our receipts when we check out. They have a puppy introduction booklet you can get at the checkout counter that includes discounts and coupons throughout the store, as well as $15 off premium dog food as well as a free bath & grooming package, so it basically pays for itself! You can purchase these booklets for $20 even if you don’t have a puppy 🙂

We also applied for a low income voucher for our puppy to get neutered. We are not on welfare, but are private school teachers who have a very low income, so the animal services in our area have a spay/neuter program so we can get a voucher for $20, whereas it would have cost us over $200 oop!!!
