  7. shelaghc

Just an FYI – almost nothing from Kashi is either “all natural” or “organic” anymore. A lot of organic stores no longer carry them at all.

Also, Fage is neither “all natural” nor “organic.” I called them to ask about their status on that and they confirmed this.

Additionally, Horizon’s organic status has been challenged by several organizations over the years.

One such organization is The Cornucopia Institute. While Hip2Save doesn’t permit links in comments, I urge everyone who cares about organics to check out their ratings of the various companies regarding this important issue.

Informed consumers are the best way to keeping companies honest.

    • Melanie

I don’t see how any of us can eat 100% organic all of the time unless you only eat what you grow yourself & even then, how do you know what is in the soil? I just try to eat healthy with minimal processed foods – if it’s organic, that’s a plus.

      • shelaghc

My comment isn’t about how much organic we all eat.

I’m simply pointing out that some companies that either profess to be or are assumed to be organic or all natural really aren’t.

No criticism of anyone, including Collin, is meant.

However, I do feel it’s important to be informed and know what’s being put on the table and in our bodies.

And, honestly, if you’re paying organic prices – with or without coupons – don’t you want to know that the food is indeed organic? Otherwise, why pay the higher price?

        • Em

Exactly! Definitely research what you’re eating- why pay HIGH costs if it’s the same as the other stuff?

        • pam

Totally agree. I will no longer buy Horizon–they do not appear to care about humane treatment of their cows. 4000 cow farms are not farms in my opinion. I WILL buy Organic Valley, as when concerns have been raised about particular farms etc, they seem to have addressed those concerns quickly.
Thanks for pointing out the need to scrutinize all companies, particularly when they claim to be organic and humane.

          • shelaghc

Applause to you for making the humane decision!

        • Melanie

I agree – I just think it’s impossible to regulate.

          • Mae :o)

Not impossible to regulate — We just need to get the shindigs out of our food agencies.. and before it gets worse which will be too late.

Speaking of The Cornucopia Institute.. has anyone seen the movie Genetic Roulette? It’s def worth your time. Or even Food, Inc. Either film will certainly put the 1st line above in more perspective.

Love shelaghc’s “statement of concern for Hipsters to not just be good couponers, but educated consumers” — Hats off to you.

    • Cindy

I’d consider Fage to be “all natural” though… Although the term “all natural” technically doesn’t mean anything and is nothing more than a marketing gimmick (it’s term is largely unregulated), its products don’t have any unnecessary ingredients or additives. No added sugars of any kind, even. Just milk, cream and bacteria.

I agree with Melanie though, there may be some that are extremely strict with buying organic products (to the very T), but there’s many that just want products that are better for you, products that are much better than the current industry standard. Not saying that you’re wrong for scrutinizing some of the companies’ practices, but as long as it’s not filled with junk and hormones and preservatives and ingredients potentially hazardous to our health, I think it’s worth buying. Not to mention, maybe the USDA should implement stricter guidelines and standards so rules are uniform throughout and that these companies won’t be able to get away for scamming consumers as well.

      • Cindy

And if my comment seems like I’m trying to pick a fight or criticizing you, I’m sorry! Totally did not mean to make it sound like that. Just offering my POV I guess. 🙂

      • shelaghc

You’re absolutely correct about the “all natural” designation. That’s my bad – I was actually thinking of a term for growers – “certified naturally grown” which does involve actual certification with a non-profit group and is just shy of organic. (Not a USDA appellation, but still useful at farmers’ markets and with CSAs.)

As I said, I did speak with Fage and there seems to be no movement with them towards an actual organic product, but they do claim to be rbST free – without the scrutiny of an organic label to make the designation more honest.

And I agree wholeheartedly about people making healthy choices.

Again – there is no criticism of anyone meant. Just a statement of concern for Hipsters to not just be good couponers, but educated consumers.

        • Sarah

shelaghc, I didn’t think you sounded critical at all! But maybe that’s because I was going to point out the same thing 😉 I try to eat organic as often as possible, but that is still probably only about half the time, if that. The thing that bothers me (mostly with Kashi since the brand was really built on being “natural”) is that I feel lied to.

Companies can get in HUGE trouble for saying something is organic if it isn’t, but anybody can claim anything is natural, because there aren’t any regulations on it.

For a while, I had the thought that if it was sold in Whole Foods, Trader Joes, etc. it must be fine, but I have realized that there are some products in their stores (my Whole Foods still sells Kashi, for example) that are not products I want to eat.

Also, I think most milk/dairy products claim to be rbst free now, but again, I don’t know if there are any regulations on that (or what they are if there are regulations), so I am leery. If I had unlimited financial resources, I would purchase the $5 for half a gallon non-homogenized, free range, grass fed milk, but alas I do not have unlimited financial resources, and purchase milk alternatives most of the time.

          • shelaghc

Sarah – good on you for caring about farm animals!

I’ve found Trader Joe’s to be one of the more responsive stores where it comes to customer relations.
I noticed once that some brownie bites with the TJ’s label had HFCS in the ingredients. I pointed it out and the sales associate was actually perplexed. He said “We have to contact *corporate* about this.” (My emphasis.)
Not the manager, district manager, or regional manager. They had to inform the corporate offices. The next time I went to there, the product was gone.

That said, they have no control over the other brands they sell, but if enough customers complain, they *will* cease to carry it. They’ve done that many times over the years.

btw, if you have a Food Cooperative in your area, look into that for healthy alternatives. Coops generally have more organics and nearly always support local small farms. Most of them (in my experience) have sales, take coupons, and have various other ways to save costs.

I am able to shop at my local coop without breaking my bank – I’ve even managed to get free or almost free things there!

    • Sherry

Shelaghc, I really appreciate the referral to The Cornucopia Institute, it had some great information I was not aware of and is helpful in making future buying decisions. Thanks for sharing! 🙂

  8. Melanie

wow! Calm has great reviews on Amazon! I might have to give it a try. Is it something that you have to take every day? How long would a can last? The only vitamins or supplements that I buy are ones I can get for free with coupons so this is pricey for me!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

It is on the pricey side, but so worth it in my opinion! 🙂 I do take it every night before bed.

    • Rachel

I was also wondering how long a jar would last. I saw the reviews on amazon and am intrigued!

    • Kelly

I’m also intrigued by the Calm….it does seem like a great product! Ordering pronto…thanks Collin! 🙂

My favorite organic/all-natural product is Annie’s cheddar snack mix. It’s as good as other snack mixes, but better for you! Their Mac n cheese is great too, the white cheddar one is awesome.

  13. Katherine

Collin–do you recommend a flavor on the Natural Calm Magnesium supplement? I think you were featuring the unflavored, but have you tried others? Thank you.

  14. Jeanette

Hello. Are the fage coupons under a certain zip code? I didn’t see them.

  15. Amy

I Love your videos! Your not shy and I love to watch just to see what you will say next!
Your so cool that way. Keep up the great work!

  16. Ambo

Great video. Thanks for all the links.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      YW! 🙂

  17. moon

hi collin or other hip2savers, what organic food stores do you shop at that will accept manufacturer coupons? tia!

    • rose

Most of the organic/natural products I buy come from regular grocery & big box stores, like Winn Dixie, Target & WM. Sometimes I hit Whole Foods, stacking their store cpns with manuf cpns. I also buy online at Abesmarket & vitacost.

    • cathy

i shop at trader joes and whole foods and safeway (pretty big selection actually).

      • M

Just about all of them to my knowledge.

  18. Mary

Love your kitchen! Thanks for the video. Lots of great information!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

You are most welcome! Glad you enjoyed it… 🙂

  19. Sherry

Another source is also to consider, if you have Grocery Discount stores. I just recently got one in my town and have been absolutely shocked at the number of organic products from name brands, baking to dairy products at prices better than grocery stores w/ coupons so keep that in mind. Case in point, I bought for 99 cents Stoneyfield’s whole milk organic yogurts for my daughter, at my regular grocery store, they are $3.89!! it was a huge savings for me. the only draw back is they don’t always carry the same brand so you have to look and hope to get lucky.

    • Renee

Very true! I’ve often found cheap organic products in Big Lots of all places!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Great tips! 🙂

  20. marie

Went to Nunaturals website to check out the products and they have a free sample available on the stevia packets. All you need to do is send them a self addressed stamped envelope. Don’t know how this powdered formula compares to the liquid but at least we can try it for free and see before buying the liquid and not liking the taste. Here is the info from the website.

Send a self addressed stamped #10 size envelope (this is a 4.125 x 9.5 inch envelope addressed to you at your address with a first class postage stamp (currently is $0.45 as of 4-21-2012). put on it) to our address shown below.

NuNaturals 2220 West 2nd Ave Ste #1 Eugene, OR 97402.

Please note if you do not include a self addressed stamped envelope in your mailing to us, we cannot send samples to you so please make sure to include this.

We will send you 2 packets of NoCarbs and 2 packets of White Stevia to try. Find out why hundreds of product review sites rave about NuStevia as being the best tasting Stevia on the market. There is a limit of 1 trial pack per address.

  21. Renee

Thanks for the video Collin! Ive been trying to eat more natural products, so this will def help! Also I tried Fage yogurt after you recommended it, thinking I’d never like a non flavored yogurt, & it’s my new favorite! I added a very little honey & chopped pecans-yummy!!! Thanks!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Yum!! Glad to hear you like it. 🙂

  22. Victoria

Collin! I am slightly obsessed with your website and videos! You are too funny and make couponing so awesome on another level!! Keep the videos coming!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Thanks, Victoria. I sure appreciate your sweet comment. 🙂

  23. Steph

I’m so with you, Collin, about the Maranatha peanut butter and the Fage yogurt. They’re my personal brand favorites, too. I’ve never tried the Pamela cookies (for the very reason you gave about them not looking very good based on the packaging…funny how our minds think alike!), but now that you’ve recommended them, I’ll certainly give them a try. Speaking of our tastes being the same, were did you get your cute coffee mug?

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Hi Steph,

Well, you are definitely gonna have to give the Pamela’s cookies a try – they are so darn good! 😀 As far as the mug goes, it was a gift from a friend so I’m honestly not sure where she purchased.

  24. Jenny Bosse

    Collin,
I just wanted to point out I live in a very small area, we only have a walmart supercenter and a rite aide. At my Walmart there is a awesome gluten free organic section; I was ordering things that they had there, it is so amazing! BYW I love Fage yogurt!

    thanks for all you do!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Wow! That’s awesome to hear that they have a nice organic section. 🙂

  25. Sharon

I save on natural and organic at earth fare. They have great coupons and now have an app with even more coupons and deals! Just yesterday I got Nature Valley waffles, organic apples, and several other things for $1 each.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

I’m super jealous… I hope Boise gets an Earth Fare soon. They always seem to offer great coupons and sales.

  26. Christa

Thanks, Collin! I seriously want to go to the store right now and try out all of your favorites! Love these videos!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Glad to hear you enjoy the videos! 🙂

  27. Bobbie

Yay, I’m so glad you’ve been making the videos again! And this is my favorite topic! It’s awesome to see these products gain popularity and an increasing number of coupons showing up for them lately.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      I agree! 😀

  28. Lora

Collin, your hair looks really cute…thank you so much for the video!!!

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Awe… thanks!

  29. michele

Thanks for the video and the reminder about those sites that offer coupons. Since I’m EBF my baby girl now I’ve been trying to eat much healthier.

  30. Valerie H

I joined the Driscoll’s berries survey group awhile back. For every survey you complete you get a coupon that you can print twice. At first they are 50 cents, then they go to 75 cents and now with over 16 surveys I’m at $1!!! I do them all the time and have not had them turn me away or stop the coupons so I get a 2 $1 coupons from every container and keep buying more! We love berries so it’s a great deal for us. I highly recommend this program!

  31. Sarah

I have been very impressed with Target over the last few months. They have a lot more organic products than they used to (my Target is one of the ones that has a limited grocery section with some fresh produce and meat, but is not a full grocery store). The prices aren’t always the best (although sometimes they are reasonable), but it makes me happy to see.

My personal obsession is their organic blue corn with flax seed tortilla chips. Ohmygoodness, so good. Not the healthiest thing ever because, hello, they’re chips, but they are fantastic.

  32. melissa oat

Thank you Collin! You did it again! Organic Food & bowel movements two of my favorite things to talk about (jk) but I do have colitis lol. I don’t know if you have a TRader Joe’s around you- but the actually sell Pumpkin Spice flavored Coffee- it isn’t junky either it has a few natural spice ingredients- I microwave my milk with honey in the mug ( my sweetner of choice) I then use my $2.99 frother from Ikea and then pour the freshly-brewed tj’s pumpkin spice coffee. It tastes amazing! For $6.99 for a container it really is a good deal- when you think how much a PSL costs in any size! You could totally prob. make this coffee- think pumpkin pie spice on whole beans- maybe even a cardamon pod then grind it all up?
Hope this helps and thanks for your great video! xoxo
    Melissa
    P.S.
Did you ladies get my Hobocamp package 😉 ?

  33. M L

Thank you for the additional information & I have to give a shout out for MaraNatha’s Almond Butter

  34. ola

Love your videos :), entertaining and informative :). Keep it up :), looking forward to the rest :).

  35. Sheree Powell

Liked the video, loved your scarf. It would be great to see you in action buying these products using the coupons. Where you shop for them and what kinds of deals you get. I don’t normally buy all organic but I’d like to. Next time maybe a shopping trip using organic coupons and the best places to get the lowest price. Love the kitchen and your hair. 🙂 Future video ideas – teacher gifts, mens gifts, things to donate, my-the hardest person to buy for, coupons toy deals for older kids, shopping at dollar tree, shopping at family dollar or shops like that. PLEASE KEEP MAKING THE VIDEOS!!! I LOOK FORWARD TO THEM EVERY WEEK!!!!!

  36. johnathans_jiggle

Yeah! I’m gluten free so this was really great to see some of my go to products! Thank you for taking the time to put up links!! I’ve book marked this post. Oh, and I take some magnesium before I start work to calm me down. It works great! Thanks for all the info!

  37. Lisa

Col – I have been with you for years and years and this is probably my favorite video you have made yet! Great to know which organic products you trust and your video editing was spot on!

  38. April

If you have a Wegmans near you I think their organic store brand PB is way better than Martha.
I think it would have been funny if you had your I pooped today shirt on covered with your scarf and then flipped the scarf out of the way at the end 🙂

  39. Tonya

Thank you thank you thank you! I’ve been so lost since trying to switch everything over to whole, natural and organic this was very helpful. I have visited in so long b/c I can’t buy all the free/cheap coupon stuff from before. Would love to see a weekly organic match up for each store! Thank you again!

    • Jane

that would be awesome for me to! Starting this new Whole30 it would be great!

  40. Meher

Guys you should really watch this movie- documentary it is called Food Inc.
it is must watch by everybody who eats food.

  41. Meher

You would never go back to the same eating habits after watching this movie Food Inc.
