we are moving this week and are thinking about only having internet hooked up in our house to save on monthly expenses. Does anyone use amazon prime and their primary tv watching? Where we rent now they have Comcast with pretty much every channel….so it’s going to be a big adjustment.

    • MaryE

@Ashley, i have Prime and its great. our house doesnt have cable either. I say invest in a Roku (google it). I also subscribe to Hulu plus and netflix. i havent needed cable in years.

    • Heather

I actually cut our cable off in January of this year and the kids primarily watch Netflix ($7.99/mo) only. There are some shows (Scandal, Greys Anatomy, etc.) that I love to watch.. and I watch them on abc.com! It was an adjustment for about 2 weeks.. after that, surprisingly, even the kids were saying they liked Netflix just as much (ages 4 & 10).

      • Manny

Heather if you have a digital tv, then you should be able to watch Scandal, Greys etc as they air. If you have an analog tv, then you might consider a digital converter box.
I haven’t had cable in three years and I don’t miss it. Between my digital converter box and my laptop, I’m all set. Occasionally I throw in a month’s Netflix subscription.

    • Natalie

Ashley, we did the same thing when we moved and I love it! We use Netflix but friends have amazon prime and love it. We also use Aereo.com, it’s a service that streams the basic network channels to your computer. It’s not in every city yet but it may be where are moving to. It is an adjustment but we love not paying for so many channels that we don’t even use!

    • McKensie

We use Netflix. Amazon instant video doesn’t seem to have as much to watch. They have a ton of things but a lot that I’ve seen you have to pay. There is also a website I found called project free TV where you can watch most TV shows the next day after the episode airs. I think you might be able to do that with Hulu Plus also, I can’t say because I’ve never used it.

      • Sally

Project Free tv = piracy of tv shows.

    • Bo

I have a friend who cancelled their cable and just used Amazon Prime for their tv. Ends up they spent more money per month with Amazon than they did with cable because a lot of the shows they watch cost $2 a show and that added up.

      • Julie

We just use prime for our t.v. Before we cancelled our dish we went online and found out that almost all the shows we wanted to watch that aren’t on prime we could watch online. Now we’ve picked up watching a lot of new series we wouldn’t have because they were available. We like to be able to watch a series from start to finish without waiting for weeks or having to watch commercials. Also we like not being tired to watching a show at a certain time so for us it works great.

      • Ashley57

We use Amazon Prime instead of cable and love it. We have a computer hooked up to our TV, so we also use Hulu for free.

    • Terri Harrison

I signed up for Prime but there were to many extras they wanted me to purchase. I have been with Netflix for over a year now and love it. the lids can always find a great movie or TV show to watch and so can I. I highly recommend Netfix. No extra fees for movies.

      • Terri Harrison

        Opps, Meant Kids.

    • Emily

I had Comcast and also had Prime. If you cancel your cable, you won’t be able to watch television shows on Amazon, the way you do On Demand with Comcast. Comcast has the newest episodes up the next day but Amazon has last season… and the newest seasons aren’t usually free. Browse the Prime offerings online, it’ll tell you if it is free with prime when you look up things online. If you plan to keep the internet, you can likely watch a lot of the shows directly from the channel’s website the next day, so you won’t need cable for that but for HBO and other premium content, watching it online means you have to log in through your cable provider first so they can validate that you pay for that content. Amazon is great if you don’t mind watching older seasons of things, but for new content you’ll want to keep Comcast or just watch them online.

  4. J

I don’t know how much I will be ordering from Amazon now…

  5. Jessie

Love my Prime membership!!! It’s well worth the cost.

    • jac

Don’t forget, if you are a student (with a university email address), your prime membership is $39/year and includes all the prime benefits!

    • Heather B.

      We love it too!

  6. sam

that is a bummer! it’s still not worth it for me to get prime at this point.

  7. Tam

whaaaat? the $25 shipping is the only reason i loved amazon…$79 is a lot to pay for prime. maybe if their streaming was comparable to netflix…

    • Matt

Before I had amazon prime I would sometimes buy stuff I didn’t need to hit the free shipping mark. I figure I actually save money by buying prime because if I only need a ten dollar item that’s all I buy and shipping is free.

If you know someone else who buys from amazon a lot and wants to save on shipping maybe you could split it with them. The primary account can grace 3 or four other accounts with the ability of prime shipping. **note only the main accounts gets instant video and lending library privlages.

      • Kristen

That’s true, thanks for sharing your thoughts. I am the same way with sticking in random stuff to make the 25.00 mark!

  8. maryb

OT: Just want to share that I was offered a free $5 mcdonalds GC on mycokerewards.com after entering a code 🙂

    • Lolita

I was too, I clicked on the link, entered a code, and never got it. Entered another one, still didn’t. Emailed them, and they told me it was a limited time thing and that they probably ran out. My email said it was available until Oct 31 and did not mention limited quantities. I had tried using the link that had been posted on here, I’m not sure if that is what made the application think I already had it?

      • Amanda C

I got the same email and entered my code before it was even posted on Hip2Save. I emailed them as well and got the same response. Definitely disappointed because I read of so many others getting it on here who didn’t even receive the email and entered codes way after I did, but they received the gift card.

  9. margaret

I am a huge fan of Amazon and purchase a good bit (all with free gift cards) every month. I used to have free prime for a year but decided it was not worth the extra money when it expired. I am on all their subscription lists and cannot believe that a company like Amazon with excellent customer service did not give a fair warning!!! That really gets me that they would do it without that warning. I am not sure yet whether I will be able to justify the prime cost or just order far less frequently from them. 🙁

  10. nel

Prime is totally worth it for us! We don’t live where there are a ton of shopping options and in winter we love to just shop online. If you don’t think prime is worth it, you could consider sharing a prime membership with someone you trust to split the cost. You could both keep your own cc on file or enter your own each time and since you control the “ship to” info. with each order, it really isn’t that big of a deal.

    • bunny

That’s a great idea Nel! Splitting the cost so it’s just $39.50/year instead of $79 isn’t so bad!

    • babybasement

I thought that in order to share the subscription, the other person had to live in the same household?

      • Heather

Nope. Can have up to 4 households sharing. I share with my mom and sister neither live with me or each other

        • babybasement

Wow thanks! I didn’t know that. Thank you

        • babybasement

can the other people sharing see your purchases?

          • Emily

No, you invite their accounts to share your membership and you never see what anyone else does. They’re supposed to live within your household but they don’t seem to enforce that policy. Only one of you will get access to the streaming stuff though. I share with my Mom and Dad and I hooked their blue ray player to my amazon account. If they rent something from the amazon streaming, it shows up on my bill – but that’s not a big deal to me. They rent maybe 5 movies a year and that’s mostly when I’m home visiting anyway.

            • CJ

Thanks so much for sharing this info! I had no idea you could do this or I would’ve done it a long time ago. I haven’t been able to talk my husband into $79/yr but I’m pretty sure he’ll go for $40 if we share it with my mom. I love having free 2 day shipping & no minimum purchase amount required!

          • Christine

Sorta unrelated….but you can also share a normal $7.99 netflix subscription between 2 households legally. My husband and I are sharing with his parents and we first checked to make sure we weren’t doing anything bad. It says so on the site, not sure exactly where because my husband found it for us. As long as you don’t mind the other household seeing what you have watched then it is an awesome deal. Plus, you can make different “profiles” so that it will make suggestions, etc just for you.

            • Tilla Ham

my son and his friends all share Netflix, their game stop account, and whatever other things they do for gaming and tv..they couldn’t afford it otherwise as young college guys

    • Sarah

Just be aware: only the primary Prime account holder can use the free video services. I am on an account with my sister, which is GREAT for ordering, but I cannot rent movies, etc. for free. Only she can, because she is the primary account holder.

      • Casey

Very true! We shared with family for a while, but we could not stream or borrow from the Kindle library. I’d rather pay the whole amount and be able to do those things.

    • amanda

Does anyone know how this works with Amazon Mom if you share a membership?

    • nel

      Info from Amazon’s site:
      Share Your Amazon Prime Benefits

Free or paid Amazon Prime members can share their shipping benefits with up to four additional family members living in the same household, or up to four coworkers. Other Amazon Prime membership benefits such as Prime Instant Video and the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library can’t be shared.

To manage sharing your Amazon Prime membership:
Go to Manage Prime Membership .
      Click Invite a household member.
You can then do the following:
Share your membership by entering the name, relationship, birthday, and e-mail address of the person you’d like to share the membership with along with your birthday.
Note: The person you invite will need to know the month and day of your birthday to accept the invitation.

Stop sharing your membership with someone by selecting the bullet next to their name and then click Remove.
Note: Amazon Mom and Amazon Student members with Amazon Prime shipping benefits and customers receiving a free 30 days of Amazon Prime benefits with Kindle Fire won’t be able to share their benefits. All existing shared household members will continue to receive shipping benefits if the primary member switches to the Amazon Prime shipping benefits offered by one of these programs, however, the primary member won’t be able to add or change shared household members if they move to one of these programs.

      • Eve

Okay, you can share with household members. Or four random coworkers, but technically not other family who doesn’t live in your house? But coworkers? Weird.

  11. Mourrene

For me, Amazon Prime is a decent investment. They don’t add enough “free” movies often enough to make it a good choice for movie watching for me. However, I was able to catch up on Grey’s Anatomy episodes(through Season 8) so it paid for itself with that alone. I bought a Roku last summer and am seriously considering ditching cable. I need to try HuluPlus to be sure it has the shows I like to watch. Thanks, Natalie, for sharing about Aereo.com. Hopefully they are available in my area.

  12. Tarah

We have Amazon Prime and I really can’t imagine not having it. With the extra savings through Amazon mom and the added subscribe and save discount, it really makes it worth it for me. Additionally, the amount I save in being able to order online and not have to run out to the stores is amazing. The streaming is pretty decent as well…they have a few things Netflix doesn’t have, including a season of Dora, Bubble Guppies, and Team Umizoomi! No, it’s not as good as Netflix BUT for 6.58 a month you’re getting free shipping, streaming, extra discounts, and the Kindle service.

  13. Lolita

I got Amazon prime right before they started doing the Add on program. I was upset because that was part of the reason I got it (so I wouldn’t have to buy $25 worth of stuff). Now, some of the things I want to buy are add on and I cannot get them until I have $25 worth in the cart, and then when I finally do, sometimes they are out of the add on item I wanted originally. I almost wish they would let me pay an extra dollar or something for the add on so it is no longer an add on.

    • Tina

I agree with you! I have had Prime for several years now. Now everything I want seems to be an add on item. It doesn’t seem worth having anymore.

  14. Ashley

Booo! I wish they’d waited until after Christmas. Oh well, just means I’ll have to shop a little smarter and make sure I’m ordering everything I need at once.

  15. babybasement

I am really disappointed in Amazon for not giving their loyal customers any advance notice of this. I get that they obviously didn’t announce it ahead of time because they may have lost new Prime customers joining which still sucks for them because they kind of joined under false advertising now but it would have been nice to plan my monthly purchases a little better knowing this. I also notice that Amazon is making lots of products ‘add on’ items and for these reasons, I may need to reconsider my prime membership in 2014.

  16. Kathy

I love prime. We don’t have cable/satellite. We use Roku, Plex, Amazon, and some other free options. We don’t miss cable or the cost. Prime pays for itself in just shipping for us, so the streaming and other features are an added bonus. We do get prime cheaper because of their student discount. If you have a college email you can sign up I think, but I would pay full price for Prime.

  17. Krystle

Don’t forget that there are ways to get a discount on your Amazon Prime membership, One way is by being a student. I got a free trial last year and then signed up for $38 I believe and after my free trial was over and paid my yearly fee I have all the things a regular prime member does. You just need a .edu email in order to get the discount.

    • Anna

Awesome I have an edu email since I work at a hospital yay and it worked! Thanks for that info I get 6 months for free

  18. Candy

Since Amazon has been charging NJ sales tax I’ve gotten creative and started looking elsewhere. Staples price matches them for everything and you get the 5% back if you are a Rewards Member, Walmart.com I’ve noticed is in direct competition with their prices an u can do ship to store same with Best Buy and Newegg has been putting out coupons like crazy. I use to order everything from Amazon but no longer.

  19. Melissa

I think that Amazon Prime is an amazing bargain for all you get. Amazon loses money on shipping alone for my family! In addition the free streaming and Kindle books are wonderful!

  20. Rachel L

If you are a student, I believe you can get the Amazon Prime Membership for $40. Almost half the cost and totally worth it!

  21. kt

We Pay $6.99 A Month For Amazon Prime. They Offered The Price AFter Our Trial. It Ends Up Being $5 More Than The $79 Yearly Price. But It Was Nice They Offered A Smaller Start Amount. We Love Prime, But In January I Will Just Pay The $79. I Think Its Worth It!!!

    • debra

I did the same thing last year. I don’t even feel the cost each month. We don’t really use the streaming much since we have DirecTV.

  22. Dawn

That stinks. I was getting some gift card money for Amazon in the next week or so and would have had $25 and then I would get it as close to $25 as I could…..now i need more gift cards to get up to $35 🙁

  23. deidre

We have Prime for the free shipping, but mainly the streaming. It’s our only source of shows and as long as you’re willing to watch different things its great! We like it better than Netflix and Hulu.

  24. LisaR

You may want to consider a ROKU also, I love mine!! it allows your T.V to access. your Netflix, Amazon prime, Crackle, Hulu and many other free stations!!I love Netflix!! I almost always watch shows from there!!

    • Ang

I agree! ROKU boxes are awesome!

      • Tomoko

Yeah, I love my Roku too.

  25. Michele

Does anyone know if there’s a way to stream sports? We haven’t cancelled cable because my husband had to watch all the major sports games. We stream netflix and we would stream Amazon if we could cancel cable. Ha! Silly sports.

    • Jessica Short

A lot of the Sunday and Monday night NFL games are shown online. Just go to NBC sports or Fox Sports online and you can stream them for free. I don’t know about college football or other sports. But I don’t have cable and haven’t missed much football.

    • Jen

Same here…HUGE Atl Braves fans. We tried to sign up for MLB.TV (around $100 per year for all regular season games) but the Braves was the only team “blacked out” (and we live in NC!!! Arggghhh!). What sports/teams are you interested in? You may be able to sign up for packages like the one above.

      • Michele

We live outside Philadelphia and have to have all the philly teams availible. Plus hubby went to Penn State and has to watch Penn State football. Unfortunately I don’t think we’ll be able to scrap cable until there’s an easy way to stream sports. And games have to be watched on the TV. Unfortunately our 27″ computer monutor won’t cut it. Ha! Silly hubs.
That stinks the Braves were blacked out for you.

        • Emily

Hook the computer up to your TV for streaming sports.

    • debra

You will not be able to see all the games if you don’t have cable. Just signed up with DirecTV so hubby could get all the games this year. He loves it so its worth the $55 a month plus I get the added bonus of extra Viggle points.

    • mrl

I would be interested in hearing how others are dumping cable and still watching sports on their television (professional mostly – NHL, football, baseball). Our kids watch very little TV – they get their screen time fix with their kindle/ipad and my husband and I don’t watch any weekly shows. The only reason we “need” cable is because he likes to watch sports.

Also wondering what dumping cable would do to our internet bill. Both are through Charter Communications and are part of a bundle package. Wondering if Charter would just raise the price we pay for internet to off-set the money they’d be losing if we dumped cable.

      • Michele

That’s my concern as well. We bundle cable, internet and phone (which we don’t need but it’s cheaper the have). I’m afraid dropping to just internet would only save us a few dollars. We have Fios.

        • Ashley57

I am a Florida Gator fan, and I have not figured out how to watch the games, so if that is really important to you, I think cable is the only way to go. (I see some at friends’ houses, go to sports bars, go in person, and then I miss some, but I am not a huge sports person)

          • Emily

My boyfriend wanted to drop cable and I told him that I needed sports (we’re nontraditional in our love of sports) and he suggested we watch at the sports bar instead. I don’t drink so it would just be meals for us there, and I figured that two meals a week for the two football games I wouldn’t want to miss – would far exceed the price of cable and be too much of an inconvenience. We’re keeping it for now as a cable/internet bundle.

      • jenn

We bought a $30 antennae at walmart and use it to watch whatever games are in our local channels.

  26. Jessica Short

Can someone tell me, are the Add-On items at Amazon not covered with Amazon Prime? I haven’t ordered enough Add-On items to know how they work, but with Christmas coming up, I want to make sure I know. Thanks!

    • Em

You have to order the minimum for the addons- even with prime

    • Kelly

If your Add-On item is eligible for subscribe & save and you have other subscribe items you do not pay shipping with Prime.

Subscribe & save has been a life saver to me and makes Prime so worth it. The less I have to drag 3 kids out for the better!

  27. babybasement

When you add and ‘add-on’ item to your shopping cart, your total Amazon purchases must equal $35 or more to get the free shipping. Amazon will give you a note if you have not reached that minimum amount so you know.

  28. Lisa K.

I more than get my money’s worth out of subscribing to Amazon prime. I do a lot of shopping at Amazon and like to have access to the instant video library too, so it’s worth it to me.

  29. Casey

Amazon Prime is worth every penny.

  30. Ashley57

I think that people need to remember they are one of the only sites I can think of that offered free shipping after only $25, and it has been at this cost for a long time. It doesn’t surprise me that they had to raise it – I am glad they are keeping the program at all.

    • Laney

I’m disappointed about the minimum increase, but I agree most companies have much higher minimums for free shipping. Guess I have to shop a little smarter for Christmas too!

  31. Janet

I pay for prime and love it. Totally worth it for me.

  32. kimberly avila

i LOVE prime. i split the cost with friends, so it only came out to about $13 a year (you can have up to five people) and i shop so much, it’s great to pick something and have it at your door in two days. the only downfall is that if you’re not the main account holder, you don’t get the amazon’s instant streaming, but that’s okay. i just love it for the two day shipping.

  33. Sarah

I am very disappointed about this change to $35. Prime is not an option for me. I actually very politely expressed my disappointment in this change on Amazon’s FB page and they deleted my comment. Just another reason that I probably won’t be shopping on Amazon that much.

I’ve read several news articles recently about Amazon’s biggest competition in the online world is Walmart and I think this was a stupid move to make to up their prices on anything. With Walmart, most things are ship to store for free, no minimum ever! And even TRU has this option on some items. Shouldn’t be raising prices around the holiday times!!

    • Kayla

I really hate when companies remove comments on Facebook. I love amazon but that is truly shady.

I’m a big fan of coach bags. And when i went to sell one on ebay they sent me a cease and desist letter saying I could not sell their bags without their permission. Despite the fact that I’ve sold many in the past with no issues. I am always changing my collection out. When I contacted them on Facebook and asked them why and why don’t they make it known so people know not to try to sell them they removed my comment. It’s like they want people to try tow cell them so then they can sue them or something,

      Shady!! I hate that

  34. Kathleen

I wish it didn’t go up but, I love Amazon. I will still shop from them.

  35. Sarah

I was just reading today that Amazon isn’t actually turning a profit right now. They sell items with such a thin margin of profit that they haven’t been making money. So it’s hard for me to complain about them raising the threshold for free shipping. They’ve also done away with Prime members being able to get any item overnighted for $3.99 (the cost now varies depending on weight).

    • Kayla

They can’t be doing too bad. They make a ton of money on kindles, games, apps, books etc alone. Not counting everything else they sell. They’ve been doing the $25 min shipping for YEARS so eventually it had to go up. Things always do. I highly doubt they are not making money. They also get and deal with commerical based shipping so they are not losing money in that.

  36. Andrew

Amazon went downhill for me when they raised individual shipping costs on DVDs from 2.98 to 3.99. At that point, if I had $25 worth of stuff, then I would choose Amazon. Mostly since they raised rates, I Price matched things at Best Buy or bestbuy.com.
Now that bestbuy.com has removed the free shipping option and the stores are shrinking media, I was contemplating using Amazon more. But since they raised the FSSS to $35, I will just request the free month of Prime something in middle November to coincide with Black Friday and then hopefully, any remaining funds from my account are down to 0 when prime ends.

  37. Jarrod L

Maybe jeff beazos needs the money after he paid 250 million for the post, guess its time to shop elsewhere to.
