Yay – this awesome promotion is coming back again next year! If you love to read a good book and to tell other people about it, you may want to apply now (before January 5th, 2014) to be a World Book Knight Giver.

On April 23rd, 2014, World Book Night, an annual celebration designed to spread a love of reading and books, will take place in the U.S. and U.K. and they’re looking for 25,000 volunteers to each hand out 20 copies of select book titles. That means they’ll be giving away a total of 500,000 FREE special World Book Night paperbacks! Wow! πŸ˜€

In order to be a book giver, you must be:

*Aged 16 or over and a resident of the U.S. (go here for the U.K./Ireland site)
*Able to pick up 20 copies of your book from your local bookshop or library
*Committed to giving your books away on World Book Night to non or light readers

How Does it Work?

*Head on over here by January 5th, 2014 and fill out the form to register to be a World Book Knight Giver.

*On the registration page, you’ll need to make 3 book choices and state why you’d like to participate and where you are thinking of going to give out your books. Keep in mind that World Book Knight Givers will be chosen based on where, to whom, and why you want to give books away (95% of applicants are accepted).

*You will be notified in early February 2014 if you have been chosen to be a book giver and which of the three books they are able to provide you with. You will then choose at which local bookstore or library you’d like to pick up your box of books ahead of World Book Night (during the week of April 14th 2014).

*Then, on April 23rd, 2014, you’ll just need to go to a coffee shop or hospital, church or community center, an after-work party or train home, shopping mall or local school — and give out 20 FREE paperbacks. Keep in mind that these paperbacks will be specially-produced, not-for-resale World Book Night U.S. editions, and there will be 35 titles for you to choose from.

(Thanks, Dayna!)

    @Sasha – most of these are children’s books. πŸ™‚

    • Debbie

No, most of the books are adult titles. The “children’s books” are young adult titles.

      • Tilla Ham

several of the books are in my consideration childrens books as my children read them in 2nd or 3rd grade

This is a great program. I participated a couple of years ago and gave the books to staff at our local nursing home. It was actually hard to get some people to accept a book, as they thought a free best-selling book was too good to be true!

  8. Catie

I have participated the last two years and loved it! Great program!

  9. Anna B

I have also participated the last two years and it has been a WONDERFUL experience! I hope I get accepted again this year. The application process is easy peasy and there aren’t any strings attached. If you are thinking of applying, definitely go for it!

Please read about this I have been doing it for 2 years now. It is geared for adults not kids. The idea is to get the older generation reading. Kids because of school already have to read. It is a awesome program. I go to my local shoprite and hand out the books, people are amazed they are free!!

It is such a wonderful program, but it is actually World Book Night, not World Book Knight πŸ™‚ Although promoting reading is worthy of knighthood, in my opinion πŸ™‚

I have been a book giver for the last 2 years, and have taken them to our local Senior Center to hand out… the seniors are always so excited to have a new book, and touched that I choose them to give them to!
