DIY christmas card holder

Raise your hand if you look forward to getting the mail in December with anticipation of Christmas cards like me!? Our family loves getting and receiving cards and here are some great ideas on how to display them.

Below is how I’m displaying cards this year. I simply covered a large canvas (used in my everyday décor) with fabric and attached red ribbon with thumb tacks to the wood in the back. I also made a cute swag to put at the top with floral wire and holiday items. You can then use paper clips or clothespins to attach photos.

Last year, I made a very simple “tree” shape with ribbon along with these super cute vinyl presents from the local craft store…

Here are a few other creative ways to display your cards:

How great is this Pinup Wreath made from a large embroidery hoop and clothes pins from Martha Stewart?

Sunny Side Up Blog did a great job of hanging cards on the banister with her garland.

Attach ribbon on kitchen cabinets for a simple and festive display like Greener Grass did.

Repurposing old shutters to display Christmas cards is so genius. Love this idea from Pretty Handy Girl. Keep your eye out for shutters at thrift stores and garage sales!

These simple Christmas card trees from eclectic whatnot are beyond gorgeous!

Look how cute and unique this Latter Christmas card display is from Better Homes and Gardens.

What a great idea to display and keep together last year’s Christmas cards from Dixie Delights! Just use a hole punch and binder clip.

How do YOU display your holiday cards?

I made a sign out of wood that says, “Merry Mail” and then stapled (with a staple gun) some ribbon to the back. I then hang them with small clothespins. I love it!

Not only a contest winner, but crafty too! 😉
      Merry Christmas, Ashley!!!

Thank you! My first cards came in the mail today and I was sure where I was going to put them. Now I do – the banister. Stopping at JoAnn to get ribbon on the way home from work.

Thanks for the great ideas to hold Christmas cards. I try and put them on my front door inside and they are always falling off. Will try one of these? Thanks, Collin!

Liseja, I do the same thing as you, hang them on my door. I make a three fold out of about a 2 inch piece of the large packing tape like what was on sale at Wag’s a few weeks ago (not sure how to explain folding the tape, but most people know how to do it so the tape is sticky on both sides). Because the packing tape is large and strong, the cards never fall down. 🙂

      • Liseja

Great tip! Will look for that type of tape. 🙂

My parents just tape them to the door (from the inside). I think it works great!

We put ours in the fridge with magnets.

I got my first card today to and these ideas are great!

We have a metal front door and a Hallmark cookie themed magnetic advent, when we take off the magnet “cookie” for that day, we then use it to hang up our Christmas cards on the door. I love the idea of using a binder clip and hole punch to keep them together, I think I may do that starting this year when we put them away. I can use cardstock to create an album cover with the year. I’m also planning on making non-holiday photo wreaths with clothes pins as gifts for my in laws this year.

Fabulous! I was just trying to scheme up new ideas for my cards the other day. thanks!

I’m always up for new ideals for cards. We get so many it’s always the first thing I try to come up with new ideals for. I have put Christmas paper and bows and ribbon on our coat closet in living room – think I’ll do that again. I do like ideal of hanging cards on the tree.

I usually hang red velvet ribbon along the inner door frame between the kitchen & dining room (there were salon style swing doors when we moved in, which dh & I took down so its an open flow throughout the rooms) This year, I draped garland around the door frame (got it off clearance last year!) I attach the cards with clips or clothespins.

I put washi tape and Christmas scrapbook stickers on binder clips. Stand the clips on end and put the cards between the prongs. They look great on our shelf!

  11. Bobbi

I hang them up with tape around a door frame in my kitchen. Everyone sees them on their way to the living room.

I’ve been needing a way to display the cards, so thanks for posting these ideas

I wish I get more than three or four cards. No one in my family really sends them out anymore. Everthying seems to come via Facebook these days!

I made one inspired by the large embroidery hoop. I shaped a metal coat hanger into a circle, then covered it with cute red/green/white snowflake ribbon. We use reindeer clothes pins that I found on clearance to hang our cards. I love the shutters though…maybe next year 🙂

Thank you so much for the ideas! I have been trying to come up with an idea on where to our Christmas cards. With a bit of ribbon they are now decorating my kitchen cabinets. I think I’m going to get my cricut out and decorate the paperclips that I’m going to use to hang them.

I have coupons $10/50 plus free shipping for shutterfly that expire on 12/14 if anybody wants it : DHAA-4CX4-M1TT-XYDGVB and DHAA-7K5H-D6RV-41AY79

I love my card holder, it is a metal flower (looks like a poinsettia) with a jewel in the middle. I got it this year at Hobby Lobby 50% metal decor only $12. Lots of cards can fit tucked into petals. I love saving photo cards from years past to fill till I get new ones.

  18. April

I don’t do anything special to display Christmas cards, but I always save them. When the holidays are over, I cut them up and use them as gift tags. 🙂 It saves me from having to buy them or waste ink printing them, and they look great.

  19. Malia

I display my cards on our kitchen cabinets during the holidays. Afterwards, I place the special ones in a scrapbook dedicated to just Christmas cards. You can see the kids getting older as the years go by. : )

I chalk painted the side rail of my daughters old crib red & added greenery. It turned out super cute!

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

      Very nice! Great idea

Last year I hung string with a bow at both ends in my dining room and used clothes pins to put Christmas bags on it with pokemon cards and candy in for my son to count down till Christmas. As he opened them to count down we filled the empty space with our Christmas cards. It worked so well we are doing it again this year with Yugioh cards in the bags.

    • SarahP

That is such a cute idea! 🙂 thanks for the tip!

We tape ours on the back of our front door. We can then see the pictures & enjoy them as decorations throughout the entire season!
