Target Shoppers: Security Breach Affecting Millions

Attention Target shoppers! If you made any credit or debit purchases in-store between November 27th and December 15th, you may want to check your bank or credit card statements very closely. It appears that unauthorized access to Target’s payment card data during that time period may have allowed suspicious charges affecting millions of credit and debit cardholders. Keep in mind that this breach only happened in-stores and did not affect any online purchases. Head on over here for more details on how it may have affected you.

I just found out my credit card # was stolen I had a fraud alert from my credit card acct. about suspicious charges. Someone went on a buying spree at Best Buy & Target tried to spend over $2000 thankfully Target purchase was declined. Hah the bank probably knows I’m too cheap to spend that much! This was in Georgia.

Gail, I am glad the purchase was declined. You made me laugh with the too cheap comment.

So I couldn’t get through to any Target phone number (even my local store), so I went into my redcard account and “disabled access” to my card. PLEASE tell me that means I’ve closed my account. I can’t get through to any Target reps to help me, so if someone knows what “disable access” means here, please let me know!! :/

Ditto. I tried three different numbers. At one point I actually got through to a recording but then was told that they could not process my request and hung up!!! I hope I do not have to change checking account numbers. I also cannot get ahold of anyone at Wells Fargo so I will have to pay an in person visit. Cash is KING and I will start using it when shopping. This is only the beginning…

You can’t win, if you get rob of your cash who’s going to replace your cash

I called Target because I could not find a way to delete my account online. I was told, “There is no way to delete an account, we can only disable it”. I said, “Criminals can steal my information if my account is only disabled”. They said, “Don’t worry, our systems are more secure now”. What? Is this illegal? I should be able to “delete” my account. I think that it is time to file a class action lawsuit.

I can’t get through to Target by phone and there is no option to report my REDcharge (not Visa) card lost or stolen online, so I set my online alert to contact me if any charge greater than $0.01 is made and that will have to do until I can call and report the card lost to get a new one with a new number… So far, my charges are all in line with my shopping, but I might as well get rid of the compromised card and get a card with a new number.

Personally, I think Target should just do this for every single REDcard holder, at least the REDcard debit and Target-only charge cards that are under the store’s control. I realize other people and other ccs would still be affected, but this seems like a minimum Target could do without requiring every REDcard holder to call in about it.

Yes, but if I’ve “disabled access” for my redcard account, does this mean that it’s now closed, I have nothing left to worry about, and I can cut up my card?

It took me over a half hr, but I used this #
1-866-852-8680. The first few times, it rang when I hit 1 for operator, but then said the call couldn’t be completed. So frustrating! But I kept hitting redial while wrapping gifts! FINALLY, it rang and connected me to another automated menu. Wait for prompt 5 to Report Lost or Stolen Card. It’ll tell you your recent transactions and if you want to dispute. Nothing was out of the ordinary for me, so I pressed 1 to report card lost. I’ll get a new card in about 10 days. There’s also an option to change your pin #, but for my peace of mind, I just chose to have a new card issued.

    Good Luck.

This is so weird. I was contacted by my MasterCard company last night to tell me that I would be receiving a new card. I had already checked to see if I had any fraudulent charges on any of my accounts and so far so good. I had not visited Target in a long, long time so I don’t know if it had anything to do with that particular store. They just said that some (un named) merchant that I had visited up to one year ago had their accounts compromised.

We got the same thing from our bank today for my fiance’s Mastercard Debit Card. We had no fraudulent charges, but when my fiance looked at his credit report on CreditKarma.com today, he had 8 hard inquiries into his credit on Dec. 19 that are not legitimate!

My bank warned me that the redcards are linked to your bank account information, so the hackers have that as well if you have a red card. Thankfully I do not, and have already requested a new card with a new number on it. It’s so hard to carry cash, because sometimes I just don’t know exactly how much I would like to spend! BLAH!

    I have not been able
    To get through all
Day but this number just worked. 16123078622. Want to share to help others. I cancelled my card so glad to not be on hold any more!

    • monica

I have been trying for 4 days with the number in the back of my card and could not get through. Got through on first try with that #! Cancelled it and they are sending new one..It took 2 minutes:)

  9. Carol

I had a target card and I cancelled my card because of the breach. I cut up my card but I still have to pay off my account with them. Can I go into a target store to pay my account off with cash and not do not need my target card ? I hope not because it’s all in pieces. Another thing is thee a way to delete all my account info on there online account management ?

    • scott garrett

This is what I am angry about. I called them to delete my account. They say it is “not” possible to delete your account, that they are only capable of disabling the account. I explained to them that I want my account deleted, and that I’m not satisified unless it is deleted. I also explained to them that the same criminals could steal my information just as easily on a disabled account. Their response was that I don’t need to worry because they have more secure systems now.

They are actually re-modeling ours thankfully!
