Do you suffer from dry winter skin?

A few of my family members have been raving about this wonderful homemade sugar scrub and I agree that it’s wonderful! I tried it after a sea salt manicure left me with itchy hives from the salon’s product. It works just as well as those expensive fancy scrubs and it’s made with natural ingredients!

Homemade Sugar Scrub

Supplies Needed:

Homemade sugar scrub with just coconut oil and sugar

Directions:

  1. Combine equal parts coconut oil and sugar.
  2. Mix in essential oils

coconut oil sugar scrub

Coconut oil is extremely hydrating and feels dreamy.

The sugar gently exfoliates your skin and combined they leave your skin feeling super soft after a bath. For a stronger exfoliator, you can use less sugar and add in sea salt. Use a quality essential oil or a blend of your favorite oils like I did here, or you can use a little lemon juice and rind as a natural scent. Your scrub may not keep as long however with fresh lemon.

Keep a little jar of this by your bathtub and enjoy! My pretty blue jar was just $1.49 at Cost Plus World Market.

This sounds great. You can make a scrub of olive oil and sugar to slough dry chapped lips. Or use brown sugar. Works like a charm.

I’m making these for Christmas 2014. I live in Houston, TX. This might be helpful to people: I did a lot of running around to different stores (since i didn’t have time to order online). What I found is that these things were in many different areas in each store. Hope this helps:
Here is what I got, where I got it and how much it was (prices may vary):
Louanna Coconut Oil Walmart $6.48 30 fl.oz. (in cooking oil aisle)
Plastic (if worried about breakage) or glass pint container big enough to scoop your hand into or use a scoop for. $1.25 – 3.00 each. Hobby Lobby, Michaels
You, of course, won’t use all of these ingredients up in one jar; thus, depending on how big your container is, you can estimate the cost.

Made something similar to this for my friends for Christmas. They all love it!!

  3. Kitty

A cheap scrub is brown sugar, sugar, vegetable oil, pumpkin pie spice. Smells great too!

  4. FuzzyPeach73

How long would this last? I use sugar scrub to help with my eczema, but it would be nice to make a batch every couple weeks, and probably cost less too! 🙂

    • J

Ours lasts at least a week but we use it up by then so I don’t know how far past that it would last.

    • Valerie H

I’ve made it and it lasted several weeks. I smelled it every time before I used it and it always smelled like fresh lemon and coconut. 🙂

  5. sally

wow, cool! thanks! sounds super easy I have these ingredients and will try this! I like your input on hip to save, Lina!

  6. Em

The tub is super slick after use though! Be careful 🙂

    • Lori G

It is a good idea to use a plastic jar for this, so if it gets dropped in the shower/tub, no glass breakage occurs! Also, getting water in the scrub will greatly reduce it’s ability to stay bacteria free, as will using germy fingers! Use a plastic spoon to scoop it out, and keep it dry and it will last for months! My container of choice is a recycled empty Talenti Gelato jar 😉

      • Elizabeth

        Great advice. And safe!

    • JA

For sure, I spent more time scrubbing the tub than I did making the scrub. It was like a skating rink!

  7. superchelsea

Okay- I HAVE to ask- has anyone who has made this tried tasting it? LOL- heaven knows I would be too curious not to- hahahaha!

    • summer

I scrubbed my lips with it and it tasted yummy😊

A cheaper routine one can do is use the scrub 2x’s a week and use African black soap on the other days. A bar costs $3-$4 for 5 oz and is packed with Vitamin A and E to help heal very dry skin. It also helps with wrinkles. I became painfully allergic to SLS and this soap has been a blessing. Thanks for this tip!

    • Jamie

Where would you find this black soap at?

      • Katie

Just google African Black soap. Looks easy to find.

      • Barbara

The brand “Shea Moisture” carries an African Black bar soap. Walgreens, CVS & Target carry the Shea Moisture products.

About how many drops of the oils did you use? I have never used oils and don’t want to overdue it 😀

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

Around 10 drops. This was about 1/2 cup oil and 1/2 cup sugar. Thanks!!

      • Helen

        Thank you! 😃

  10. Sharlene Anne

Excited to try this! Thank you for posting. Do you recommend buying the coconut oil from the Amazon link?

    • summer

I buy 55 oz of coconut oil for about $21 on vitacost.com. I hear they have a good price at Costco too.

      • prplbflywngs

My local BJ’s just started carrying Coconut Oil… however I didn’t get to look at the oz’s or cost. Now I will check it out for sure!

    • Rachel

I recommend buying organic COLD pressed to get the most benefit. I add a little to my coffee in the morning and drink it too. They had some at Sams Club big jar for about $15

  11. Rachel Pennington

Thanks for this! Sounds amazing. I’m also glad you put how much you actually mix in the comments since I’m never good at “equal parts” of anything. 🙂 My equal parts usually are too much or too little of everything.

  12. rachelpennington

Thank you for this, and thank you for adding in the comments how much of everything you use. Somehow my “equal parts” always end up being too much or too little of everything. 🙂

  13. Summer

I use 1 c sugar, 1/2 cup coconut oil, and one squeezed lemon– works great!

  14. 78Brownie

I LOVE sugar/ salt scrubs. I did vanilla bean, sugar, and coconut oil. I’ve done coffee, hemp oil, and brown sugar (what a mess but invigorating), and I’ve also used, tea, EVOO, salt; I needed to add essential oils. I want to try powdered milk in my next batch.
Do you know the shelf life for this mix? I’m thinking about the fresh lemon.

    • jessica

Just don’t do salt with lemon. Ouch!

  15. superfabwonderful

I can’t say how much I love making scrubs for others. This is a homemade gift that really gets used. Add a couple of cheap nail polishes from Dollar Tree and you have one happy sister or friend!

I mix equal parts olive and coconut oil, some sugar brown or white to the texture you like, then lemon juice. Make it fun, this last batch I added vanilla. Smelled like frosting, yumm! Or add honey, peppermint… you name it. The great thing is you can make quickly. And it is very, very hard to mess up!

  16. kara

I use this scrub all the time, I LOVE it! I do equal parts coconut oil and sugar with a splash of vanilla.

  17. Fahtima

Lol i’m with you on that one

  18. summer

What do you do if your coconut oil is liquid? I live in Florida….not the same creamy texture.

    • summer

I mean, if you don’t think to refrigerate oil before making….i.e. My scrub is liquidy now…

    • kristin

I’m in Texas. Just keep in fridge till use.

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

I think it will just have a different texture but still great! I do refrigerate sometimes too in the summer.

  19. edy

I use coconut oil in my coffee to drink a little, I also, make smooties with fresh fruit and coconut oil, delicious, use coconut oil for hair and skin / cvs started selling coconut oil not to long ago, walmart has it and sam’s very cheap 9.99 big jar – will make the scrub too

  20. Danielle

I love YL oils for scrubs! Sam’s has a 54 oz. for $15.00 for the coconut oil that I bought this weekend; we prefer the smell and consistency over the one at Costco. I whip mine with the mixer for the same high humidity problem then put into jars. To fix the slick tub I have Dawn dish soap handy to cut the oil after the shower.

  21. Valerie H

I’ve made one similar to this several times and love it! I keep in it a Tupperware container since we have a cast iron tub and I wouldn’t want a jar to shatter. Works great!

  22. Sherri

I LOVE coconut oil. It can be used as a facial cleaner, skin, lip, & hair moisturizure, and A MOUTHWASH!! Look up “oil pulling”. It kills bacteria that causes bad breath and has eliminated my dry mouth. As a dental hygiene student, I had to try this because people are always looking for the natural way to help with dry mouth and bad breath, well this is the answer! I have tried it myself and my dryness is completely gone and my morning breath is gone by the time I spit it out, although you still must brush your teeth afterwards. Plus, coconut oil naturally whitens your teeth. You get the most benefits swishing it in your mouth for 20 min. a day, sure its a long time but you can do it in the shower. I wish they taught us this in school, but then again maybe the teachers don’t know. I’m glad I do.

  23. GJ

Is this an all-over-body scrub? Can you use it on your face, or would it be too oily?

    • Lina (Hip's Modern Martha)

Yes all over! You can use just the oil as a natural makeup remover too.

  24. Katybug23

How do you put it on? Do you just scrunb it on or what?

    • BearsBootsnBlessings

You put it on your face and scrub. When done, wash off. I use it in the shower all the time. I am not sure what others are doing that cause oil to be in their bath tub. I have no issues like this.

  25. Tammy Blankenheim

This was so easy to make! My hands haven’t been this soft in years! I am giving small jars with my xmas gift baskets this year and going to get more scents!

  26. Beth

I use this scrub everyday after I wash up with soap. Scrub it all over then a quick rinse and then shave. It gunk sip the razor a bit but you will be incredibly smooth!

  27. Beth

    Gunks up

  28. Grace Morgan Blackenter

Just keep in mind that coconut oil goes solid below a certain temp, the body scrub I have here that I made this week with it is rock hard now. Its a easy fix though, just drop the container into a bowl of hot water or let it sit where the water in the shower hits it to heat it up and soften it. I’m using it for a demonstration speech for a class I’m in and I put samples for the class in little plastic condiment cups with lids and they worked so well I may give it as gifts in the little cups too!

  29. Rachel

I Love this, it’s great! I have been using it for years!! I have many oils that I use, and love different oils for different moods too!! Perfect!!!
And yes, use the glass instead of the plastic, if you put essential oils in it!!!
I have oils I am selling if you need some too add!!

Try Mexican sugar and lemon..It’s amazing
