In this video, I compare the cost of popular canned goods (like green beans, pineapple chunks, and crushed tomatoes) at warehouse stores like Costco versus grocery stores like Albertsons. Why can’t they do $20 back on canned goods? šŸ˜‰

Thanks for the great tips and video, as usual. I’ve never realized the savings on canned goods at costco!! Snack on cold green beans, though?? GAG!!! šŸ˜‰

  3. Bianca

    Yeah… I don’t need $100 worth of anything but groceries šŸ™‚

I am loving your kitchen. I oogle it on every video. How did you make your new house look so amazing? Did you remodel yourself? If so, where did you get the ideas?

    • Rachel

Ditto! When I grow up, I want that fridge!! Haha šŸ˜‰

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

Awww… thanks! šŸ™‚ I have a middle sister who is an interior designer, so that definitely helps! šŸ˜‰

Love LOVE the suggestions! We do a lot of mason jar storage! I’d love to hear what you do with “near death” (lol) produce! The idea of throwing away food is sinful to me; I’m sure you agree! So I’m curious what you and other hip2savers do when your bananas, apples, etc are on their last life?

    • Ashley

Peel and then freeze bananas in a freezer bag. Great for smoothies and protein shakes!

      • Jennine

And banana bread, banana ice-cream, banana popsicles just peel and freeze, i cut in half for my littles and pull out let sit for a min, wrap in towel it is actually good! My kid asks for a banana popsicle almost every morning

    • LoveSaving

We also peel and freeze bananas. Also great for baking this way. Try making applesauce with the apples. Super easy to do, just google it.

    • Valerie

Yup, I freeze a lot of fruit for smoothies or ice cream topping. I make lots of banana bread, cake, muffins, etc. I’ve also made chicken stock or soup out of near death veggies, when they are all cooked in the soup you can’t tell. šŸ™‚

    • Rachel

      Awesome ideas! Thanks ladies!

Does anyone have tips for saving on a Costco membership? I have been wanting to get one for a while now.

    • Steph

living social has a deal now. check livingsocial.com..
      ā€¢ $55 ($104.47 value) for a Gold Star Membership
ā€¢ Includes $20 Costco Cash Card and coupons
ā€¢ Valid for new members for their first year of membership only

      • Fran

Thanks!!! I’m visiting my son in FL and one is right down the street. The only one is see is for Dallas do you think you can use it here?

    • Laura

I get the second level of membership (not the cheapest one the one above it) and they give you money back at the end of the year (a certain % back from your purchases) I use that to pay for renewing my membership so it’s like it pays for itself!

      • Rose

You don’t have to get a membership. If you buy a gift card to Costco just show it at the door. It also gives you a limit on what your going to spend.

    • Donna C

You can split a costco membership with another household and split the cost. A friend and I have been doing it for years.

      • livingartphoto

As long as you feel honest about it. That is against their policy so you must have lied and told them you’re in the same household. They usually check addresses too.

    • Valerie

Yes you can split with a friend or family member. My mom has the Executive membership for her small business. She adds my brother, me and some of her siblings to her account. It works out well for her because she gets money back on all our purchases and we save on the membership fee. Win win!

      • livingartphoto

It actually costs the same to be added to a business account as it does to sign up on your own for a goldstar membership. And only the Primary and secondary cardholders earn towards the executive check. So if you shop often at Costco you’d probably be better off getting your own executive membership.
        — 10 year Costco employee–

    • Heather

I agree with the above reply about the executive membership. I get a percentage back every year on what I spend at Costco, and it ends up being cheaper than buying the goldstar membership, which is regularly $55 anyway. It is more to lay out, but my philosophy is, if I can buy it at Costco, and it’s a better deal, I buy it there. Toilet paper, diapers, coats for the kids, tires, etc.

  7. AMY

Is it $100 in one transaction or just combined in Feb. March?

    • Emily

The details on the form say it can be multiple receipts.

  8. Kate

Loved watching the video, I buy green beans in the 12 pack of 14.5 oz cans at Sam’s and it is a little more convenient and still only at 63 cents a can. You can do a little bit better with coupons and sales, but they aren’t always available. Green beans are a go to for a veggie at dinner for us, so it doesn’t take long to go through a 12 pack. The large cans are so much cheaper, but not sure three of us can eat one in a week. Love, the big cans of sauce and use them regularly.

  9. Kate

Buy one large can of crushed tomatoes, add basil, olive oil, garlic, red pepper flakes, meat, etc. in crock pot and make your own sauce. Put in freezer bags and a really in expensive way to have sauce flavored your own way and right in your freezer.

  10. Jackie

Collin you rock! Would of not known about this without you posting this deal! Grateful for all of your time you spend on helping others save!

  11. Neet

Harris Teeter actually has a better deal. Spend $50 on P&G and a few other brand items and get a $20 gift card. Google the Go for Gold promotion at Harris Teeter. Hopefully there is an HT near you! šŸ™‚

  12. Doaa

For executive membership you get 2% cash back. If by the end of the year you don’t make the difference between $55 & executive they refund you the difference. Happened to me a couple years back. I paid $100 for executive, received $62 at end of year. They refunded me $100-62. Check deaths with Costco

  13. lacie lair

Anyone know of how to check on the status of this?

  14. leticia
