Safeway and Albertsons Announce Merger

The links in the post below may be affiliate links. Read the full disclosure.

BIG news for all you Safeway and Albertsons shoppers! Yesterday afternoon, Safeway and Albertsons announced a definitive merger agreement which will result in a network that includes over 2,400 stores (no store closures are expected as a result of this transaction). According to the Press Release, here is what customers can expect…

The Merger will enable Albertsons and Safeway to implement operational best practices in order to offer customers an enhanced shopping experience and more competitive prices. Realizing substantial cost savings will allow for investments that are expected to benefit customers, including price reductions as well as store remodels and refurbishments. The diversified network will allow for a broader assortment of products, enhanced fresh and perishable offerings, and expanded private label alternatives for customers.

What are your thoughts on this merger? Do you think it will be positive for customers and do you think it will impact couponers?

(Thanks, Alissa & Deanna!)

Terrible news. Only two grocery options in my town. Now we will have one. It’s a monopoly. I love Vons and avoid Albertsons at all costs. This will greatly impact the quality of food I can buy and the way I coupon. Super disappointed.

    • Jay C says:

I have not been able to shop at Albertson’s in years. They nearly killed my mother with a botched up prescription, and could have cared less. I know they have new owners, the old ones were useless, but I still cannot go into a store named Albertson’s even with the change. Now with our Von’s, where we shop the most, part of that family, not sure if I will be changing.

      • Sussie says:

Assuming you mean your mother was giving the wrong medication, that isn’t the fault of Albertsons, but the fault of the pharmacist.

        • Tina says:

I’m sure she knows that. It’s called “one bad apple spoils the whole bunch baby” It’s happened to me also. It was a person who made the experience bad, but the entire establishment lost my business.

    • Adrianne says:

I agree with your comment about going to vons and avoiding Albertsons. Albertsons products are terrible and prices have become too high in an already high economy.

  • Moria says:

I’m not happy about it either. We used to shop mainly at Albertsons. Then when they were bought out last year by Albertsons Inc or whatever it was, we basically stopped shopping at Albertsons and starting our main shopping at Safeway. Now that Safeway has been bought out by Albertsons, I don’t know where I will shop. We’ll see how this “lower prices” turns out. That’s what they said would happen at Albertsons. Which, in a way it did. They lowered the regular prices, but their sales suck now. Things are rarely on sale anymore and when they are its only like 10 cents off.

  • DeAnn says:

I guess time will tell. I’ve become a faithful Safeway shopper since becoming a couponer several years ago. I like the J4U program, and even the gas rewards. I hope they don’t change things. I’ve not shopped as often at Albertsons since their merger. I miss their double coupons, and the round up weeks.

  • Kimberlee says:

I’m not thrilled about this. Not a fan of Albertsons. I already only have one store in town (a Safeway). I’ve always liked Safeway, and hope this doesn’t mean many changes will be coming my way.

  • HAZ says:

    I agree, Albertson’s sales SUCK! I

  • Charlene says:

Watch out!!! I loved our Albertsons! They bought out United (Texas). United to be still uniteds, no changing names or anything! BUT the courts said that Albertsons had to sell THE ONE STORE in our city (court order). Sold it to cashsavers… that is a freaking joke.. Hamburger there is 5.00 a lb, When it was Albertsons I got it all the time for 3.00 a lb.

  • Bekah says:

Albertson’s where I live in Seattle is always over priced. The same cereals are literally $2-$3 more a box (organic cereal) then at Fred Meyer or Safeway. It makes me feel like we are losing Safeway as a good option. They usually have some decent sales, but Albertson’s here rarely does.

  • Tilla Ham says:

I abhor ALBERTSONS and the company that owns them. Safeway is my main grocery store and my sons place of employment. I will be very sad to see this go through, if their corporate owners try to turn safeway into a low budget, over priced, near expiration date, smelly place that all of the local Albertsons are.

  • Donalee says:

I agree with all that has been expressed thus far about Albertsons. I don’t shop there anymore!

  • Jennifer says:

Wow, not good! I haaaaaaate albertsons! They’re way overpriced! Every time I have gone into an Albertsons I get angry at something, like soda priced higher than the label on the bottle stated! I have never seen that before at any other store! Safeway/Vons is far better in prices and sales and I hopes merging with Albertsons doesn’t bring them down.

  • claudia says:

Ehw.. Hate Albertson the only thing they ever have on sale is their private label which is crap… I hope they become more like safeway becuz of this

  • Krista G says:

The stores are so different in how they operate. Hopefully, they will unite the better of their store policies and promotions. Thankfully for me, there’s still Fred Meyer if both stores become intolerable :)

  • Casey says:

Wow! I love my Albertsons so much. I get great deals there and everyone is so friendly.

  • Glenn says:

I don’t have any major beef against Albertson’s or Safeway, but I don’t see how there won’t be any store closings. Both where I live now and where I recently moved from, Albertson’s and a Safeway Affiliate (Randall’s/Tom Thumb) were the two closest stores. Even if the merger doesn’t close stores directly, I (and I imagine most people in similar situations) will just go to the nicer/newer/bigger store since prices would be the same now.

  • tisha says:

MAN… this is not good – Tom Thumb was the last store in our area to still double and triple coupons – and allowed stacking w/ store and manufacture coupons – big bummer – I’m sure their coupon policy will be changed to Albertsons :(
    I guess I’m back to HEB…

  • PJ says:

I am not familiar with Albertstons. The Safeway I shop at is not coupon friendly and I always have to check my receipt to make sure I was not overcharged or make sure I received my Just for U discount. In my experience they have poor customer service.

  • Rachelle Betow says:

I’m bummed. I used to shop at Albertson’s but I agree with what everyone here has said: their sales are terrible. Safeway has really stepped up offering a lot of great deals with the J4U program. I can only think that Safeway is going to be more like Albertson’s now so I guess I’ll have to do most of my shopping at WinCo. Bummer. :( Maybe they’ll read this thread and the safeway people will realize that Albertson’s is just bringing them down! lol

  • kathy says:

Yup, I’m with the others: used to like Albertsons but hate it now. I can’t even stand the substandard ads they print these days. And I, too, love Safeway’s J4U. If Albertsons adopts the J4U, that’d be great, but something tells me that’s not going to happen. Time will tell.

  • Jessica says:

Yikes! :( I do not like Alberstons at all. We don’t even have them in our area anymore, but when they did, they were way overpriced. I love my Safeway stores.

  • Anna says:

This may be a way to at least save your local store. Dominicks was our Safeway chain, and they closed all stores in Chicago last year. Dominicks was a huge chain until Safeway took over in the 90s, and it just fell with Safeway. Now they are being converted to Jewel (Albertsons) or Marianos, a nice but very expensive store. A lot of stores are vacant. I don’t know if Safeway is struggling all over or just Chicago, but this may be a reason for the merger.

  • Tilla Ham says: please email Cerberus capital management that bought out safeway and let them know not to change your store!

  • Michelle W says:

My Albertsons in AZ is GREAT! Very friendly, good sales and does great things for our kids school. They even have covered parking!

The Safeway is friendly but overpriced except for a few sales items. I do like that they allow you to use an ecoupon with a paper coupon so that can save you money sometimes. Will have to wait and see.

  • Jennie says:

Things seemed to be going downhill for Safeway for a while now. I completely stopped buying gas there due to lower gas rewards and a per gallon surcharge for credit. I’ve had many items ring up wrong and some pretty blatant bate-and-switch with misleading signage. Even their plastic bags are thinner, I cant even get the groceries to my car before the bags begin to break. Guess the decent into darkness is now complete, good thing we have a Fred Meyer in town.

  • julie says:

I’m sad to hear that albertsons is buying out safeway and not the other way around. I live in a small town with a safeway and walmart. I refuse to shop at walmart so I end up at safeway. Albertsons is very high priced so if they change over I won’t be shopping there, either. I will be traveling 20 miles into town to shop at winco if this is the case.

  • Lauren says:

I live in the boise area and I actually really like Albertson’s. I’m not familiar with Safeway. Albertson’s is over priced but they have great sales frequently. I only shop the sales but I love the employees at mine. They are so nice and helpful!

    • gina says:

Albertsons originated in Idaho and the stores there are super upscale compared to the ones in wa state. They’re on a whole different level there. Beautiful hardwood decor, salad bars, really nice organic section etc. The employees are really polite and helpful. Ours are overpriced and just kind of eh.

  • Erica L says:

Here in SoCal, Vons prices are often double Albertsons prices. I can’t stand to shop at Vons. In addition, I prefer to avoid the hassle of the J4U program. At Albertsons I get great stock up deals every week and I don’t even have to have a store card. Just bring my coupons and I’m good to go. I hope this merger doesn’t change things for the worse.

  • RfromLTown says:

Have to admit, when doublers ended, we but stopped shopping Albertsons. Safeway can be good on some sale + coupon items plus the Just 4 U can be good. It’s a much cleaner store, too. It might be crazy, but Wal-Mart is where we shop the most.

How many areas have both an Albies and a Safeway within a short distance of each other? Ours is within a dozen blocks of each other. They say no store closures. “Bull”-oney.

This is not good for the consumer around here. Just when I thought our area was going to start to get some competition in the grocery business, this happens. Good thing Winco is coming to town.

  • Maja says:

In our town we had 3 Albertsons stores, and 2 of them closed month ago, I’m sorry that people lost their jobs, but I don’t like Albertsons at all, dirty stores , overpriced, bad sales etc…We have more that 10 Safeway stores, all are coupon friendly , clean, always sales items in stock, friendly employees, great J4U program, no stores closed in last 7 years here ,etc… I’m hopping that this merge wouldn’t change Safeway, if they become like Albertsons I’m going to move my shopping to Winco or Fred Meyer…

  • Teri says:

Oh booooo! I get 4 grocery store ads a week. Safeway, Albertson’s, Frys and Sprouts. When I make my grocey list from the sales I rarely have anything from Albertson’s. They are just too expensive. With that being said, the Albertson’s bakery in Peoria AZ makes a wicked White Chocolate Truffle Cake that we splurge (7.99) on once in awhile. Worth every penny.

  • RT says:

I HATE Albertson’s and love my Vons. I hope things don’t change. My Vons is so coupon friendly and all the employees are so kind and helpful!

  • Jennifer says:

Also not happy with this. I used to shop at Albertson’s because they were the only store to double here, as well as gas rewards (with a pump close enough to use…our Safeway’s nearest associated gas station is MILES away), and the occasional $5 reward was nice. Once they merged and lost all of those benefits, especially the occasional doubler, I stopped shopping there. On rare occasions, I will go there for savingstar discounts, but now I mostly go to Fred Meyers for those…

  • Marie says:

I worry about the unionized Safeway workers. If there’s no voice for them what’s going to stop the whole corporation from turning into another Walmart?

  • Amy says:

Welp! That seals the deal! I will stop shopping there altogether! Awful experiences at Safeway and Albertsons sucks too! Will be using the alternatives! Whole Foods, Costco, Trader Joes it is!! Yay organic!

  • foga says:

Dammit!!! I detest shopping at Albertsons n if I had the time I would rally for its complete shutdown. Hopefully it works out but I highly doubt I’ll be shopping there. I wish I had a Winco closer to me.

  • CW says:

It’s been years since I’ve had an Albertsons in South FL. They couldn’t survive here. I wish you all the best of luck and you all make me feel so fortunate that I have Publix, super Target, super Walmart, one Winn Dixie, a Whole Foods and soon a Trader Joes all within a 5 mile radius of my house!

    • Maja says:

oh yes you are lucky that you have Publix:) In WA state we have only Walmart (not me favorite), Safeway (which I love) and Albertsons (I HATE them) and Target (which I love too)…But for organic foods I choose Safeway and Whole Foods, but Safeway is cheaper …

  • Laura says:

In my experience, our local (AZ) Albertsons is ridiculously overpriced and I will only go in there to buy something on sale. They double coupons only on rare occasions. On the other hand, Safeway is my go-to store; they double coupons up to $1.00 and I save 50% on my bill on average using sales, paper and digital coupons. My budget will be devastated if they become like Albertsons. :(

  • Samantha says:

I’m seriously annoyed by this, especially since Albertsons stopped overage to your cart and to add to the many who have already said OVERPRICED! And more often than not I at least get one item that’s expired (when I’m not being diligent and forget to check) you would think they would take better care to rotate their stock, I mean what else are they doing with that surplus from people who still pay their overpriced items???

    • Fran says:

Albertsons left town years ago and I am sorry to see them merge with Safeway. My experiences with them were awful. Out of date medicines and dairy, prescriptions filled wrong in the pharmacy, flies in the produce section. A friend of mine went to their deli to get a fried chicken special they were running and the young man behind the counter told her she didn’t want the chicken dinner, and when she protested that she did, he told her Ma’am, for the health of you and your family, you don’t want the chicken dinner!!! So sorry to see them come back to town. They are over priced, dirty, and in my opinion irresponsible when it comes to the health and safety of their customers.

  • Carrie33 says:

I stopped shopping at albertson’s years ago. Dirty, rude, overpriced and expired/refrozen food.

Safeway is great here. Not only is there bakery one of the only that still bake from scratch (worth the price) but they have excellent meat and sales and gas rewards.

Guess it is only Winco and Costco for us. No other choice other than Walmart (won’t shop) and yokes. Love yokes but is 10 miles away

  • bob says:

why don’t you’all contact albertsons and let them know how you feel, perhaps they will listen, grandpa bob

  • Sharon says:

I lived in Salt Lake City where I shopped at Albertson’s all the time. I really liked the store. It always had good deals and wonder produce. I haven’t shopped at Safeway as much lately because they don’t have the deals they used to. I loved when they came out with their coupons to add to your card and then you could stack manufacture coupons with them. Then they started marking all their coupons as manufacturer coupons so thre went the good deals. Maybe the merger will help Safeway get back to what it used to be.

  • Mkim says:

I hate Albertsons at my area in Texas. Their supervisor at my store has really bad attitude, stuff are overpriced. I really hope the merger doesn’t change anything at Safeway & affiliates.

  • Lisa says:

I love albertsons chocolate chip cookies!

  • Lizzie says:

I love reading all of these comments. It makes me so excited seeing what people think of supermarkets I’ve never been to :) lol I gotta get out of NJ sometime

  • rosana says:

I have a safeway and Albertsons within 3 miles. Use to go to safeway all the time when it started the j4u & I was able to combine manu coupons with their coupons, then everything went don’t hill. The few times I been there I check my receipts and here I go to customer service or the free items from j4u won’t come out free I have to show it on my phone. And Albertsons I only go to get a really good…good deal las last week got 5 old orchard juices for 3.xx and that was it. The store that I shop is frys (kroger) I know that publix is coming to AZ but it will be far away.

  • Sophie says:

There are neither store where I live. BUT, I work in the transportation industry and I can tell you, delivering anything to Safeway is a NIGHTMARE. The restrictions they have on deliveries are outrageous and result in us declining their business; or if we do we charge them extra simply because of the hassle involved in dealing with Safeway. No issues with Albertsons.

    • Nancy says:

Sophie, I am in Transportation also and I can agree that Safeway is horrible. Here’s to no more Retailex and $500.00 for any late deliveries!! Woo-hoo!!! :) Go Albertsons!

  • Deanna says:

Ditto, ditto, ditto. Its a sad day…..

  • JS says:

Wow I don’t have a Safeway or albertsons. I lived in Texas and didn’t see any either must have been my town?

We have bilo, ingles, food lion and publix. All overpriced minus sales. I ALWAYS ad match and save myself hassle.

  • Haley says:

We don’t have Albertson’s or Safeway here (Albies got bought out by Fresh Market?) but I was hoping for a Safeway. Maybe not now, though :(

  • nay says:

I live in sacramento we have saveway but albertson I haven’t seen any stores around here in 10 yr or so. Don’t know if it hurt us or not. I to love the just4u I get great deals.

  • S.W. says:

We have both stores and I was disappointed to hear that Albertsons was buying Safeway. The Albertsons stores in the Seattle area are nasty. Old locations with dirty floors and rude employees. Safeway on the other hand has invested in remodeling all their stores. Dreading what’s to come from this merger. Thank goodness for Target, just wish we had a Target superstore with more grocery options.
