Price Points for Baby Items by Hip2Save

Calling all you moms and moms-to-be (and dads, grandparents etc)! I posted this question last year on Hip2Save and received over 200 helpful comments… so I thought it would be worth reposting again, especially since all of my kiddos are out of diapers and I don’t regularly purchase baby items (except for when I want to spoil my adorable niece Charlie 🙂 ). SO, if you have a baby or toddler, please help new Hip2Save mommies/daddies by sharing YOUR stock-up prices and any other money-saving tips/advice that you can offer a first-time parent. I would also love for you to suggest your must-have baby items (i.e. for me, it was my Sling and a Bumbo Baby seat) and baby items that you may feel are totally unnecessary.

And congratulations to all the expectant Hip2Savers! 😀

“My breast friend” CHANGED MY LIFE. lol. #1 breastfeeding was a HORRIBLE 5 month experience before I stopped producing. I had a boppy and I hated it, I know other who love it I don’t know if it’s cuz I’m uh… “well endowed” so my back already hurts on a regular basis..??
Anyway… I got a my breast friend and I seriously can not say enough good things about it. Completely changed my experience for #2. I love how it buckles in the back to give me such good back support. No more leaning over to try and feed. I also love the shape of it. It holds the baby in the perfect position. 🙂

If you’re on the fence whether or not to use cloth diapers, I highly recommend Jillian’s Drawers try cloth diapers for $10. I tried cloth diapers through this program and found out I like them and that they save money. It’s a great way to try cloth without spending a lot of money if they don’t work for you!

A Bit OT, but anyone know how to effectively clean those yellow stains from baby clothes? I (of course) washed all my son’s clothes before packing them away when he outgrew them, but now here I am pregnant with boy #2 (coming mid July) and I get out the baby clothes to find stains! And they’re of course only on all my favorite ones. What to do?! Any advice would help, thanks!

    • Leah

I’ve had good luck with dreft stain remover spray.

    • Lacy

Medela makes a cleaning product that is specifically targeted at getting breastmilk out of clothes and other stuff! Check it out!

    • Gina

The sun! I wash the clothes and hang in the sun to dry. For really stubborn stains, soak in oxiclean and spin out the water, but don’t rinse. Hang wet in the sun. Once dry you will need to rehash to get out the oxiclean. Leaves the clothing looking brand new! Works great on cloth diaper stains too!

    • Mel

Use a Fels Naptha bar, they are like $1 and work every time! Treat before you wash and you’re good.

    • marissa

My boyfriend swears by Shout stain remover for every stain no matter what it is and how set in it is!

    • Elizabeth

The same thing happened to me. I soaked all the stained clothes in oxyclean. The majority of the stains cane out!

    • ronda

Ivory bar soap rub it in let set wash in regular wash.

As for must-have products, our son would ONLY sleep if swaddled. And not in one of those regular blankets, it had to be the Summer Infant ones with the velcro. Took us 3 sleepless weeks to figure that out. Also, my niece that I have babysat since her mom’s maternity leave ended napped so well in those at my house that her parents went and bought some too. Now we give them as gifts to any expecting couple!

I have developed a sense of price points over this last year. My daughter is now 16 months. For diapers I like to spend less than 0.20 per diaper and for wipes less than 0.02 per wipe. Costco diapers when they’re on sale are usually a pretty good deal so I’ll stock up then. But QFC (Kroger) often has Huggies on promotion so I’ll stack a coupon with a sale and can get pretty close to the Costco price. Costco diapers do not usually fit newborns until about 2-3 months, just an FYI.

Most of my daughter’s books and toys I have bought second hand or received as a gift or hand me down. Same with her clothes. I never pay more than $10 per outfit for her and will get new clothes on sale at JC Penney or Costco. Before baby, I wanted to dress my daughter in Ralph Lauren and Baby Gap. After baby, I cannot say enough about Carter’s esp their “Sleep and Play” line. Sizing is great, styling is fresh and hip and they wash well. Costco and JCP usually have great Carter’s sets on sale.

I love sleeper sacks by SwaddleMe and Halo. I don’t usually pay more than $15 per sack and usually get on sale or second hand. They’re great for dads and for when your kid is a thrasher.

I still use my Ergo and baby is 16 months! Great for walks with friends or running errands. When they’re little, they just fall asleep and you can have your hands free. I can even nurse while wearing one. Takes some practice but it’s pretty convenient. I paid $100 for mine but you can get these on sale on Amazon for $60-70.

Little things that I thought were silly but I have used every day: a baby tub ($20 at Target. Should have taken friends up on their offers of second hand tubs!), baby washcloths (Gerber, $5 a pack), white onesies by Gerber ($10 for a pack of 3 to 5 onesies depending on size).

Stuff that you probably don’t need and that I got rid of pretty quickly: a wipes warmer, a diaper genie, clothes with a lot of snaps and that have to go over baby’s head, bibs (why won’t they keep them on???), socks for newborn babies (they don’t stay on. Ever.), anything that requires special cleaning or dry cleaning. If it’s cashmere, your newborn does not need it.

    • Dja

I love my ERGObaby too! Used the Bjorn when my baby was a newborn but by 3 months or so it wasn’t very comfortable. The ergo is super comfortable and sooooo great to nurse in. I love the hood that snaps up for privacy and I wear a zipper hoodie or jacket to cover the sides and can walk around and get all my shopping done. It’s awesome! (And I scored mine at Marshall’s for $69.99)

My other favorite item was my stroller. It definitely was a splurge ( even though I got it at a $300 discount!) and I know it’s not for everyone but I love, love, love the Uppababy vista. I do a lot of walking and shopping and errands by foot and wanted something with a large basket underneath to carry everything. It holds so much and it wheels so effortlessly and smooth on all sorts of terrain even when loaded up with all my junk lol
And it has options to attach another seat to make it a double or a ride Along “skateboard” for an older kid, so good investment for a growing family

My do not buy suggestion is any type of baby shoes before they are walking! No matter how cute they are I now know that 1. They neverrrr stay on 2. Have no purpose and 3. Are actually quite uncomfortable for the poor kid – I won’t even save mine for they next they annoyed me so much so on eBay they have gone!

  6. Cannielle

$3.00 for Huggues/ Pamperd,$2.00 for store brands. $.49-$.99 for Huggies wipes( WARNING: new moms, Huggies wipes are the best).Newborn doesn’t need many outfits, just more onesies. Forget the wipe warmer and Diaper genie, a stepping waste basket with lid works wonders.( Of course, keep it in the bathroom and empty it every night).

    • Stephanie

I was given an arm and hammer diaper pail, which I still use. My son is 2 and almost fully trained, but will be using it again with the new baby on the way. The refills are pretty cheap plus you can refill the baking soda yourself so you dont have to pay for the freshners every few months.

  7. Julie

I’m trying to prestock diapers and wipes before by first comes. So far I have been able to get a lot of wipes free (with coupons or free with purchase). I’m trying to stick to 10 cents a diaper and have a nice stockpile so far. I know that afterwards any sale will have to work so I’m trying to get the good deals while I still have time! For everything else I’m waiting to see what shower presents I receive but I did get some Burts Bees Baby Shampoo for $3 (with coupons) which I thought was too good to pass up.

    • Brittany

I would hold off on stocking up until you know what works. I did that with my first and diapers. She got bleeding open sores from Huggies, she could only do Pampers

  8. Happymama

Diapers: Jumbo pack – $4.00 or less.
Box of diapers – $10.00 or less.

Wipes: One tub/refill – no more than $1 (I just stoked up at Kroger for .19 ea)

Clothes: Always hit up friends for hand me downs (free!). My daughter will be one soon and she is set w/ clothes till she’s 4. Don’t forget to go to garage sales, and never pay more than $1/ outfit.

Baby food: Always use a coupon and spend no more than .30 a jar/ .50 a 2 pack. If you can’t find a coupon when you need, check Big Lots.

Formula: Sign up for all programs (Similac etc) and use the checks!

One thing I’d Invest in is a nice Play yard that has the bassinet, changing pad/ storage combo. Use a walker for the kitchen (mine is using hers right now!) and I found it second hand for $15. Find a cheap high chair…I paid $20 for a great Graco at a garage sale.

Things I found unnecessary: Bumbo seat…although we have a cute pic of the baby in it! (sorry Collin! Still love ya!), and the baby swing. I can’t believe I’m going to admit this, but I paid full price for my swing at Babys R Us, and used it for 6 months. Thankfully we have family that will use it to make use of the $179.

Ok, that’s how our family was able to stay afloat this year when the breadwinner had two surgeries this year and we are not eligible for assistance. It was a tough year, but was so much easier with your sales and deals. Thanks a million Collin!

    • Judy

what diapers are you using for $10/box? that sounds like an amazing deal – you must be a coupon rockstar!

      • Happymama

I found most of my diaper deals here! I got some as a new Amazon Mom member, Baby’s R Us had BabyGanics for $15 and I had coupons, Target has had some boxes on clearance recently, I found a box of Pampers at a drug sore for $9.99 on clearance, and just yesterday I saw some Pampers for $20 at Walmart (I have a $10 manufacture coupon from contacting them with a previous issue). It is possible! 🙂

There is a coupon rock star, but it’s Collin!

        • Melissa Stone

I agree with only 10$ a Box ($3 for the jumbo bags) as well usually target has pretty great deals if your a couponer that is….which i definitely suggest any mom start because it will save you hundreds if not thousands in the long run when it comes to baby stuff!! Especially if you email company’s or sign up for mom brand ambassador programs for free stuff <3

          • Susan

What are the mom brand ambassador programs?

  9. crystal

Jumbo package of diapers for less than $4.00

    wipes- $1 a package/tub

    baby shampoo – 75 cents

  10. adrienne

I rarely, rarely ever bought baby/toddler clothes new. I didn’t receive too many hand-me-downs, but I became familiar with the local thrift shops that stocked good quality stuff (usually in nicer neighborhoods). Same goes for books and many toys.

I also cloth-diapered (I line-dried to save electricity, which is expensive in my area) for as long as I could, and I tried to make my own baby food as much as possible using organics purchased from Costco. I tried not to go crazy investing tons of time into these endeavors, and I stopped whenever I felt it was too burdensome. I want to save money, but I want to live life and enjoy my time with my kids, too!

  11. matilda

Carters baby clothes are the best and they have really held up for 2 of my girls so far! I love them so much that I work there! Always check their clearance! Remember that you can use a coupon on sale items but not clearance, shop the baby sale! Use you coupon to get items that are 70% off and get your 20% on top of that! It’s usually cheaper at that 70% price point than when it 1st goes to clearance Plus you earn rewards for every 50 you spend! And try your best to buy ahead! They have the best return policy ever! Hold on to your reciept and return it in a year if you want! In the month of June was our big clearance summer sale last year.

  12. Amy

This post came at a great time. I am pregnant with twins and have begun looking at baby supplies. There is so much out there and I am trying to figure out what I really need and what a good price is for the basics like diapers. I never paid attention to baby stuff before at this is my first pregnancy. Thank you to all the ladies contributing to help out us first timers!

    • Susan

Wow twins?! How exciting! Congrats 🙂

  13. Cara

    Must haves:
Moby wrap for the first few months
    Ergo after that
I didn’t have the Ergo with my first and as I watched my friends use it for years with one kid, I realized I should have gotten one. So I did for number 2 and use it almost every day (he’s now 14 months old).
He can nurse in it (and no one can ever tell, ha) and it’s comfy for me. Easy to put on and easy for my husband and into share back and forth with simple size adjustments. Oh and so much better for baby’s hips than the Bjorn.

    • Susan

Is there a particular style of Ergo you recommend or is there only one style? TIA 🙂

  14. Beth

Not sure where to post but Crazy 8 sent email with “mystery” % off…I got 25% off and am NOT going to use it…hope someone can! Please post if you use it so others know it’s gone:

Get diapers from Costco the wipes and diapers worked out in a pinch especially when Huggies were not on sale. Costco always has coupons for the diapers and wipes. Pajama sets from Costco and Carter’s always used their coupons. The white noise machine he totally loved. Earth best organic ships direct also

    • Happymama

Costco diapers are really good quality too! 🙂

  16. Sam

Don’t spend more than $300 on a bob stroller. Cloth diapers saves lots of money! Breastfeed as long as possible to cut down on formula costs. Make all your baby food. Thrift stores and yard sales have great baby clothes.

  17. Judy

  18. Monica

My son was all pampers and now hes almost three and i have a six month old girl and have learned luvs are just as nice lol. MUST have silky blankets with all silk on the one side both my kids fall right asleep with them and wont sleep with out them!

  19. Tara

Best things were the rock and play and the Graco sweet peace swing where you can put the carrier on if the baby is still sleeping from the car. And all Aden and Anais products..love them. Biggest waste of money I would say are the bedding sets..I only used the extra fitted sheets I bought separately and by the time I put my daughter in the crib (9 mos) we had to lower the mattress and the skirt had to come off anyway.
Diapers i buy pampers and I have mostly bought from babies r us..they do sales anywhere from $10 off a box, $20 off 2 or $20 gc. The $25 off 2 is the best sale and I had the VIB card which gives you 10% more for the money you add..but they are ending it today 🙁 I buy the biggest boxes of diapers I can..I feel like they are cheaper then buying those small packs.. Price varies by size..we buy size 5 right now and I think I’m around 22-24 cents per diaper

  20. KS

For stockpiling diapers before baby is born, how many of each size do you moms recommend?

    • Susan

      Great question! Following.

  21. Laura

I have the same question how many of each size diaper did you ladies use? I have bought all diapers so far for under .10 cents a diaper and under .01 cents per wipe.

    • Judy

our daughter is on the small side (5%) – but she was in size NB for 1 month, size 2 for 6 months, and size 3 for 10 months — they stay in 3’s the longest, so I’d focus on that size
as for quantity – plan on 12 diapers/day for the first couple of months, then it drops off when they aren’t eating every 2 hours

  22. Lindsay

My price point for diapers is between 6-13 cents a diaper, based on brand and size. But when they are on sale, I really, really stock up, so that I can be super picky about how much I pay. Amazon mom is having a killer sale right now (50% off your first box +20% off with subscribe and save). And I just scored 552 diapers for 25.44 or 4 cents a diaper..YAY!!! I don’t like to pay more that 1.7 cents a wipe. At Sam’s Club, I can get wipes for 1.3 cents a wipe, so I just go there if there are no great sales. The best things I ever had were my jumperoo, pack n’ play, and swing. My baby loved those! I also love the Adan and Anais swaddlers. They are great for swaddling when it’s warm!

    • Maria

Hey Lindsey, how did you do that amazon diaper deal? TIA!

    • Maria

What brand/size did u get through amazon mom for that deal? Im considering amazon mom because i live in a small town and only two stores that i could maybe get a deal is walgreens or walmart. When u subscribe and save, do they send u more on a schedule? Do u still get better than 20% deals like that?

    • Susan

Holy cow that Amazon diaper deal is awesome!! Thanks for sharing..I’m going to check that out now 🙂

  23. Whitney

Buttpaste. THE best stuff around for diaper rash and can find it in a variety of stores! It is a bit pricier than the others but I would put this on my baby after their bath and the rash would be gone by morning. Would highly recommend!

  24. Angie

Babies R Us will match Amazon, and I have learned Dollar General Pampers Sensitive Wipes (At least here in Elizabeth City NC) are only $2 for 56 count before any coupons regular price

  25. Nell

I bought amazing cloth diapers for far less than any sales on disposables over time, made cloth wipes. Sooo easy, no chemicals, and virtually no diaper rash. We’re all set for our current baby and any future babies!

  26. Amber Waterbury

Sign up for Mperks Baby rewards at Meijers! Every $100 dollars you spend you get $10 to spend on whatever you want, and you don’t have to spend $100 all at once they keep track every time you enter your rewards. A few times a year they do double points and you can earn $10 for every $50 you spend!

  27. Kristen Dobson

“MyBrestFriend” nursing pillow!! Ergo carrier (with infant insert) pack n play with newborn cradle and changing station. Must haves!!!!

  28. Audrey W

Have you heard about the minimalist mom? Yeah, we live similarly.
As far as price points go:
15 cents a diaper or less
2 dollars a Onesie, or pants
1 dollar or less for toiletries
^ when I can get them at these prices I stock up enough

Other than that we reply 95% on homemade wipes and food and also hand me down toys and clothes. If I can’t get it second hand and we need it, we need it so I’ll just shop for the best price on whatever it is.

  29. Audrey W

Oh and the must have baby item in this house is the Fisher price rock and play. Love it! I could go on, but I’ll save you, it’s just a must have.

  30. elise

Went to our 1st consignment sale and bought almost $600 ‘worth’ of things for $150. You can look up local sales here, just make sure you go to the actual sale page, since it’s not always updated if there is a postponement or something. https://consignmentmommies.com/SeasonalSales

  31. Lacey

when I was prego I wanted everything new. But now since my daughter is 6 months old I have realized that they so fast that gently used items are they way to go. I have gotten an 120$ jumperoo for 50$, a 50$ bumbo seat for 10$ used and mulipal toys and clothes used. Used is they way to go. Saves lots of money$$$.

  32. Makingtime2save

I love the Sears Shop Your Way Reward system for getting free points, which I use to buy baby clothes that are on sale! If you sign up for the yearly membership you get $3 in points free every month (it’s $39 yearly, but they often run promos for less). If you sign up for a free shop your way “personal shopper” you usually get at least $5 in free points monthly!! Stack those together and you have $8 to spend each month! Plus with the membership you get free shipping on items over $10. I usually type in Carters and then change my search criteria to $10 and lowest to highest, select some cute set and pay about $2 oop for it =)
Sears will often just give away free surprise points just because, as well as coupons that you can stack to make it even better!! I buy baby clothes from Sears all the time and never pay more then $3.50 per item (set of onesies, pack of socks, 3pc outfit, etc)

  33. L

The book Baby Bargains is awesome. I try to avoid the frilly extras and just get basics (I have never gotten a crib bedding set just a few sheets purchased with a coupon ideally on sale as well). Cloth diapers are no brainer for savings. Second and almost five yrs later and I have most the same diapers, the vast majority used from birth through potty training.
Nursing is a huge money saver among many many other reasons to breastfeed. Babywearing carriers/slings make it convenient although my hubby wears the baby a lot too.
We do baby led weaning so the baby eats table food. I don’t buy overpriced baby
food nor do I make elaborate purees. I just figure out basic items baby can try.
BabiesRUs has occasional floor model sales as well a a lots of coupons. I’ve scored a deeply discounted stroller and high chair this way.
Convertible carseats are designed for newborns through toddlerhood and are good savings. Check out Car Seats for the Littles for specific recommendations.
For clothes I try to pay around $3 per item or under $5 for dress or footed pjs. Clearance at Walmart and Target help. Consigment stores can be good. Been loving recent post for The Children’s Place though:)
A big money saver for me is expect to reuse clothes and items aiming for gender neutral colors. Also look for items that grow with child like Arm’s Reach Bassinet convertible style which can also be a play yard or the Fisher Price newborn to toddler rocker. That thing hung around forever and got used often. Much better investment than a swing or bouncy seat.

  34. Smilecrazy520

Watch for Kohls deals with clothing… you can often stack deals and shop clearance for great bargains. My favorite is end of season gold star clearance with an extra 20-25% off clearance plus sometimes $10 off $30 and earn Kohls cash. Thanks, Collin, for posting codes! Garage sales are also great… 50c to $1 per item.

We like Luvs or Huggies but find Luvs run a little smaller. Stacking Target coupons, cartwheels, manufacture coupons, and gift card earnings tends to be great diaper deals. 14c per size 4 is about the best we can snag.

We loved (that others told us weren’t worth it)… the Diaper Genie for the first few months when you have 10-12 diapers per day; it does contain the stink. Changing table… we still use it daily with our 2 year old.

Life saver… bouncer that bounces/vibrates on it’s own and Gentle Giraffe on the go musical animal.

Also love (little older) Tranquil Turtle.

Could do without… Bumbo: by the time he was big enough to sit in it, we had 3-4 weeks before he was so strong he would tip it over.

We made our own baby food in our Ninja blender (no need for special baby food blender) and then froze them in trays. After frozen, we put them in zip lock bags. We just put cubes in a container in the fridge the night before (loved the clear and green containers that have 6 in a plastic tray… no leaks). Baby started with 1/2-1 cube serving and went up to 2. Favorite recipes: Top 100 Baby Purees. Saved LOTS of money!

Formula… we liked Kirkland brand from Costco. (Like Simlac) It was less than just about any deal we could create with coupons on name brand formulas. Our little one ate it with no troubles.

  35. Susan

Lots of people have recommended the Ergo – is there a particular style? I see they have several options. TIA 🙂

  36. Stephanie

I get my diapers/pull-ups and wipes from Sam’s Club. My son was allergic to the off brands and anything scented so I stuck with Huggies or Pampers, and the wipes has always been Huggies, They are about 40 a case but it works out to between .17-.25 a diaper, plus they have deals often on them. The wipes is is about 20 a case but you get 4 packs in a case and each pack will refill a tub 2-3 times each, plus in each box they give you a tub and sometimes you can also get refillable travel packs (which are really nice and dont dry out quickly like the hard ones from the store).

    • Stephanie

Oh yeah and for those really bad diaper rashes, A&D ointment with Karma Sutra honey dust. It works amazing. you can get the honey dust from an adult store, it come with a feather duster, but I swear by it. It is all natural and talc-in free, plus it is eatable so if the baby gets ahold of it, it is safe unless they have a honey allergy. Works amazing.
