    1. School just got out (and in some states is still running…) Back to school already?

    2. They are getting desperate because the vast majority of teachers dumped them when they stopped giving us the extra deals that help us buy pencils, paper, markers, etc. that we pay thousands out of pocket and never get reimbursed for each year.

    • Laura

      I take it you’re a teacher.
Thank you for spending out of pocket for the kiddos. Most in my area don’t. It’s the parents that have to donate a ton or our kids go without. I was sooooo happy when my kids were out of elementary school! I disnt find junior or senior high to be as costly as far as supplies.
With the high prices at staples I can’t imagine anyone wanting to shop there. Dollar store or walmart has to be cheaper.

theres a definite difference in quality of dollar store crayons/markers/dry erase board markers/etc vs. walmart and staples. if you hit the staples deals at the right time, you can get crayolas for $.25, supplies for a dime, etc….definitely better to shop around when it comes to supplies. you’ll waste a lot of money at the dollar store if you only head there.

If you have an Office Depot near you, they will match the Staples advertised price. I have printed off the Staples ad from their website and taken it to Office Depot and never had a problem. Our nearest Staples is too far to go for just a couple of deals, but we pass 3 different Office Depot in the course of a normal week.

          • Dawn

Thanks David! I had no idea Office Depot would price match from Staples. Do you know if there’s a limit to the amount you can purchase?

      • Shebella

We quite often have to spend our own money. My school does not give us money for supplies. The changes in the economy has caused a drop in donations as well. If we ask parents to send in supplies we have about 5 parents to participate, but if we ask them to send in junk food for a holiday party almost everyone participates. I really enjoy donorschoose.org they help teachers get the things they need.

For us, school just ended yesterday and starts back up in 4-5 weeks. School supply deals can’t come soon enough. 😉

If there is a great deal on any ad, take it to Walmart. Last year, they let me buy crayons for $0.10 price matched from staples ad for a whole class! 37 kids!

    • ester

Our Walmart is a pain in the butt when it comes to price matching and coupon usage

  7. JA

I don’t even want to think about back to school and we’ve been out for a month!

    • Dawn

JA… I’m with you! As a teacher, I love summer vacation. However, I do admit getting jazzed for those amazing back to school supply sales! 😃

i’ve been using rewards from recycling printer ink to buy school supplies. their program is more generous than office max (who also owns office depot). i have most supplies from last year stock up, but plan to hit super low priced deals for pens, pencils and erasers this summer.

  9. Gina

Didn’t staples ink program change? I tried to return some to get a $2 credit and I was told I needed to buy ink first. Has anyone else encountered that?

    • L

Yeah, they changed it earlier this year. And I think there is a minimum that has to be spent on ink ($30?) before you can get the rewards.

    • Jan

You have to buy at least $30 in ink (total after coupons and rewards applied) within the previous 180 days to get ink recyling credits. Once you buy $30 in ink then you are good for the next 6 months recycling before you need to buy ink again.

    • Tracy

you have to spend $30 on ink about every 6 months, then you can recycle 10 cartridges per month. I love this benefit. It is way better than office depot!!

    • erikam01

I turned in an ink cartridge the other day and they didn’t make me buy anything. Now I wonder if i will get any credit.

      • Dianne

You won’t, I did the same thing twice and the credit never showed up. I don’t like the changes that Staples has made including the 5% off the whole store which isn’t anything anymore because they won’t give it to you on the rebate items which is where I used to get them from but not any more. I have gone from buying $1,000 +/year to almost nothing except if they give me a ream of paper after rebate.

    • Shebella

Yes, It is awful now and they want you to spend $60 on ink. I never get credit for buying ink as well you have to spend a certain amount to get rewarded. Sucks!!

  10. Lynn

We have year round school here, so back to school is July 15. I am hoping for at least a few good sales by that time!

    • Jessica

      Lynn,
I am curious to where you live. What state are you in? My son is in love with school. We live in PA and he wants year round school here. He is totally bored with summer and he has only been out for two weeks so far.
