I LOVE LOVE LOVE Ed Emberley books! I think a 4.5 year old may be able to do it guidance from a parent. There are some other beginner drawing books that use this same method that might be better for a younger kid, but it depends on your child.(Great Thumbprint Drawing Book or Follow the Directions and Draw It All By Yourself) The way he teaches to draw is simple to follow. You learn to draw something line by line, adding one at a time. I do know that the images in these books are pretty small, the Big Green Book, and Big Red Book, and Big Purple Book have larger images. I have used these books over and over for my own use as an adult. I love them!

I got them for my 5 year old who loves to draw. I’m saving them for Christmas but I looked through them and he could definitely do them. Its just shapes.
My son had these when he was younger and LOVED them! If for some reason he’s a bit too young, he’ll use them when he gets older.
