Always make sure to check with your insurance first, as most breast pumps should be covered free of charge!!

    • Priya

Yup! I saw this Ameda pump at our Target in San Antonio for this price a couple days ago. I exclusively pumped for 8 months with our first child using this pump and it worked great until the end, where the suction started to get weaker. I just got a Medela pump through insurance this time around but if my insurance didn’t cover it, I would pick up this Ameda one again in a heartbeat at this price! 😉

  2. Amber Sikovsek

Yeah there is a reason why this is clearanced. I absolutely hate this pump, its awful! My insurance paid for this pump after my son was born and the suction is horrible, I ended up returning it and having my insurance send me a Medela Pump in Style. I highly suggest not buying this as a first resort.

    • Amber

I used this pump the whole time I breastfed my daughter and had no issues whatsoever.

    • Erin

I agree. I exclusively pump for my daughter and after 2 months with this pump I was ready to quit. Decided to buy the Medela Pump in style Advance and I still love it 5 months later. It pumps the milk in a fraction the time and has better more reliable suction.

      • Amber Sikovsek

I agree Erin and the Let down Button is awesome! With my oversupply it really helped being able to be in full control of the controls, Ameda has nothing like that, its on auto pilot.

  3. Jacki

I saw this at the West Jordan, UT Target today also. I don’t need a breast pump so it’s still there. : )

  4. Dee

Definitely check insurance! Mine covered 2 free pumps! I got a Medela Pump In Style and a Hygeia sent right to my door. I leave one at work and keep the other at home.

    • Tena

Dee, I’m very interested in what you think about the Hygeia, since it’s one of my options too! I have never heard of it ’till now. Do you prefer it, or the Medela?

      • Dee

I’m not a fan. I like the convenience of the letdown button on Medela. You have to adjust the speed and suction strength separately with Hygeia. Some women love that and say that they are able to get more milk out. I actually get less out. It is also very loud. I leave the Hygeia at home and the Medela at work. At home, I only pump first thing in the morning and have been using my old Medela that is on its last leg. I’m usually in a hurry, so I don’t have time to play with the Hygeia like I want and probably should (I’ve got to get myself, a 4 year old, 3 year old, and 8 month old out the door!). I’ve been told that once I know which adjustments work for me, I’ll like the Hygeia more than Medela. Overall, I’m glad that insurance covered it and that I didn’t spend any money on it.

There was one double pump on clearance for $50 (reg $200) at the Oshkosh, Wi target today when I went at 2pm. It wasnt this brand but a different brand that even kept track of how much you pumped etc. I was tempted to pick it up but wasn’t sure of the quality.

  6. Dja

Was clearanced at my Target but still $100-$200 ( can’t remember the exact price) My sister used this pump and it worked ok for her. I heard they are not as durable as medela but have great customer service if something does break or isn’t working

  7. Jessica

I used the Ameda with my daughter and loved it. I was stalking the ones an clearance until I found out my insurance covered one at 100%. Great find

  8. Bekah

My insurance didn’t cover it, my daughter was born in October 2013. Is this a new thing for 2014 with most insurances?

    • julie

No. Its been around for quite some time just depends on your insurance carrier.

    • Amber Sikovsek

Actually Last Year Obama made it mandatory that all Insurances have to provide and cover breast pumps for women planning to return to work. It all apart of the Breast is Best that is getting pushed now. I didn’t end up returning to work but if your doctor writes you a script for one the insurance really doesn’t question it.

      • trina

Insurance doesn’t have to cover it if you have grandfathered plan! And insurance only has to cover ‘s’ pump, most are covering a single manual pump not these double electric ones! Just an FYI!

        • trina

Sorry ‘a’ pump not s pump…darn auto correct!

        • Monica

It is best to call a Durable Medical Equipment Provider. They do the leg work of researching the types of pumps covered under your particular insurance. Most, if niot all, have electric pumps as options. I think this started late 2012 /early 2013..

        • RT

77% cover hospital grade pump rental, but most of them require pre-authorization and a prescription. You can get this from your OB or baby’s pediatrician. The insurance company determines how long the rental pump is covered. (Does that mean they can just cover it from one month and call it a day? Probably not, but I’m not sure the text of the law prevents that.)
60% of insurance plans will allow an upgrade. If your plan offers a basic pump and the one that you want is more expensive, they’ll allow you to get the more expensive one and just pay the difference.

      • Crystal

My insurance only covered a manual pump. Worthless! Thanks for nothing Obama.

        • Marcheta

It’s actually better than nothing at all…ijs

          • Dee

Agreed! Who complains about a free pump? I have a manual pump that I carry as backup in case my electric pump dies.

          • Dee

Also wanted to add that sometimes it depends on the medical supply provider. My insurance told me that 2 electric pumps are covered or the rental of a hospital grade pump for a year. I was given a list of suppliers in my area and called around. Some suppliers only had manual pumps, others had pumps that I’ve never heard of. I found a company that carried the pumps that I wanted and placed my order through them. They were not on the list provided by my insurance, but the pumps were covered because the supplier is in my state. The supplier even called my insurance to verify my options before we started the process. Most places that I called just assumed that I had basic coverage. You have to call around! In case anyone is wondering, I used Lehan Drugs in IL. Awesome service!

  9. Courtney

My insurance covered this one last year (born oct 2013). I thought the suction was fine, just didn’t like that the breast shields weren’t detachable making it hard to use a hands free bra. Pumped the same amount in the tame time frame for me. I prefer my Medela bc I can be hands free, but I purchased it myself. If insurance had given me a medela I would’ve been stoked!

  10. Marcheta

I saw this for this price in DFW, Tx. I offered to get it for my friend who is due in September, but she declined because insurance is providing one for her…

    • amanda

I’m in dfw as well! Which store did u find it if u don’t mind me asking?

      • Marcheta

It was at the Target in Mansfield off of Debbie Lane. They had this one and the Breastflow pumps.

  11. Crystal

How do u knw if ifs covered under your insurrance I have kaiser any suggestions

    • Gina

I just called my provider and they confirmed that a breast pump is covered 100%. Maybe give them a call?

    • angela

      You call and ask

    • Lindsay

Breast pumps should be covered for everyone now as part of the changes in the Affordable Care Act.

      • Kristy

It is up to your employer to include this in your plan, it has nothing to do with the ACA as I called my insurance a couple of times hoping it would change and breast pumps are not covered under my insurance, working in a hospital I thought for sure it would be covered!

    • Olivia

You just call your insurance & ask about breastfeeding benefits. They’ll get you in touch with the right dept. The pump is usually sent 30 days before due date. Mine even covered milk storage bags for a year, sent every 90 days.

    • Amber Fowler

I have Kaiser, as well. I looked up the number for Member Benefits, and called to talk to a rep. Sure enough, I will receive a pump, completely free! They will explain the process to obtain it, etc. They were very helpful!

      • crystal

Thanks so much Ladies Newbie mama here 🙂

    • annad

I have kaiser and plugged in my info in the medela website and it told me how and who I can contact to get one

    • visitor3

It’s a new Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare) requirement. Other accessories & lactation supplies are also covered, so ASK ASK ASK!

FSA: Also any breastfeeding supplies (pump, milk storage bottles/bags, pump accessories, lanolin ointment) are eligible expenses for health care Flex Spending Accounts. No prescription required, even for the lanolin. Also include a claim your mileage to the store ($0.235/mile for 2014) if you didn’t buy online. Adds up!

  12. Jacky

I bought a First Years Breastflow double pump on clearance for $54 reg $180 at my local target. It had a digital monitor that kept track of previous pumping. It had great reviews online and was selling for full price on Targets website, as well as Walmart.

  13. Frugal Mama

I have kaiser too. Your rn will be able to order it after you have the baby. You have to return it by 1 year tho. It’s like a loaner program but better than buying one. It’s a double electric hospital grade pump. It’s worth it.

  14. Marlene

Wic in california also provides a electric breastpump for working mothers or mothers that are going to school 20 hrs or more its a medela pump in style

  15. sarah

Wow, I can’t believe no one at the OB, L&D, postpartum, or the NICU mentioned that insurance typically covers these…instead I’m learning years later on a savings blog. I had a preemie in the NICU, needed to establish a milk supply, and remember running to get to the breast feeding center, during its limited hours, to rent one at a very high daily rate. Hoping insurance didn’t cover it back then (7 yrs ago) – otherwise, I’m very disappointed. But, I did buy the Ameda and it worked great.

    • Colleen

They didn’t have to cover them until the PPACA went into effect

    • makaylaisabel

Always, always ask. There are accommodations. I had a baby on the NICU and they provided the pump in the room and gave me free meals as long as I pumped. Will pump for food! lol My milk went to some other babies since my baby was in tubes 🙂

  16. Katie D

Google “affordable care act breast pump” it should take you to government site–please read! I would not buy one out of pocket when you can get it for free!

    • angela

Not everyone. My insurance plan is grandfathered so no free pump for me.

  17. Laura

I bought the Ameda Purely Yours (regular version) in 2010 for over $200. I have used it during each of my three daughters’ infancies (yes, I have had 3 babies since then), and it still works great! I did not pump on a daily basis, but I have never had an issue with it!

  18. Nikita

I have an Ameda Purely Yours breast pump that I never used, it’s still in the original box. I never even opened it. If anyone is interested I am willing to sell it for cheap. Just email me at nikitaorchard@yahoo.com

  19. Mary Beth

I just found this at the Meyerland target in Houston, TX. We are expecting our first child in November. There was still one pump there.

  20. meghan brooks

Just wanted to chime in and say call your insurance company before assuming they will cover pump. I had baby in Feb and my insurance would only cover it if it was a medical emergency… like baby in nicu.

    • visitor3

Good advice to call ahead. For the pump to be free, my insurance requires me to order through one of their preferred providers up to 30 days before my due date. I should not just buy one in a store and file for reimbursement.
