    Is this really a.good deal

Sounds like a lot of money for poor college students

    • Baylie

MacBook wise, I’d say yes. I feel like when Best Buy markets these “college deals” for students with .edu addresses, they’re hoping to target an audience that is looking for either (a) new & “now” electronics or (b) upgrades to what they may currently have…or students with scholarship money or graduation money. Collin just shares to help everyone out and spread the word of great deals, even if they don’t always line up with typical stereotypes, such as the broke college kid. Everyone can use a deal 😀

It is if you are in the market for a Mac book.

  3. susan

    waiting for the email :/

Screaming deal!! That is $200 off what apple is selling them for! Thank you 🙂

    That’s one lucky college student…..

I am a college student and i heard MacBooks tend to last a lot longer compared to other brands.
I wish i could afford a MacBook air / pro.

    • Ann

Same here. My friends have had their MacBooks forever and I’m already on my 3rd laptop in the past 7 years.

Ahh, I’ve been wanting a good deal on a Mac, but now that’s its here I’m not sure if I should blow $750 on a new laptop. The old ones I have are windows and really really slow, plus I need it for work… AHHHH. anyone know when this expires?

    • Alyssa L.

It appears to be a weekly deal in Best Buy’s weekly ad, which means the sale (the $150 off) is good until Saturday, 8/16, or until Best Buy sells out. I would go ahead and request the coupon, though, so that you have it on hand in case you decide to spring for it.

I’ve had the same Mac Book since 2009, and while it has slowed down a bit, it still works great. For basic student needs, it doesn’t do anything that a PC can’t, and it does cost a heck of a lot more. Still, if I had to buy a new computer tomorrow, I would get another Mac. The Logic board in mine died about a year and a half ago, and I opted to pay to have it replaced ($189 through Apple). When it first stopped working,I figured I would just go and get a cheap PC to replace it, but when I started looking I found the quality of the PCs wasn’t as nice as my almost four year old Mac.

I am a college student and have a code but already have a Mac. If anyone is interested email me at nikitaorchard@yahoo.com. I would be willing to trade for something

Just some tips: I started off college with a not so great laptop and by the last two months of freshman year I got a desktop (hp). I never needed to bring a laptop anywhere and most teachers do not want you bringing a computer to class. I have a macbook now because I had a period of time where I was commuting and that made things easier. I feel laptops are the norm for most students, but if you can’t afford one right now I recommend a desktop. They tend to give you a lot more bang for your buck…also I got my desktop off ebay and saved a lot.

Hands down, college students need a laptop. You can’t drag your desk top to the library to do a group project. This is a great deal. My son has a MacBook and would never go back to a PC. While some professors may have a problem with the clicking of the keys, most are fine. Because my son is left handed, for some reason it was easier for him to type notes in class than to write them.

      • danielle

In my experience a laptop was not necessary. I see how it can vary by university though. My school has computer labs everywhere and setups in the library that a very group friendly (I’ve never had a group project where anyone brought a laptop, we always used the library computers). In class my professors did not like laptops because most people would browse the web instead of listening to lectures…which was a distraction for anyone sitting behind them as well. As for typing notes, I’m an amputee and type a lot slower than I write…so for me personally it wasn’t beneficial.

I know a lot of people that stress out and think they need a laptop, I just want to let them know that it is not always necessary. This is just my experience though and hope it can help someone else.

I’m a big fan of a desk top too. I went thru college and med school without a lap top. Now all of the MS who come thru my department are carrying tablets. Smaller than a lap top, same concept. The few that actually come to lecture have tablets or iPads, no laptops. We just had this discussion the other day, they have desktops at home. There are so many computer labs everywhere on campus it’s definitely feasible not to even have a computer at all. If you’re an incoming student wait and see what you’ll need. It’s definitely by personal preference on your note taking, papers and such can always be done on campus (check your local institution for what is available to you!)

    American Express offers…spend $250 @ Best Buy get a $25 statement credit.

If you have an AMEX card that you can use to purchase your MAC, see if you have any money back offers you can synch with your card for best buy purchases. Also, check Ibotta for rebates from Best Buy. Every little bit helps!

I just bought the macbook last week for my daughter to take to college next year. If anyone has an extra code, let me know. kdka@twc.com

    • laura

Apple will typically run a back to school special as well. Every .edu is allowed 2 computers per year.

  14. Whit

I had a coupon from the post office for moving for 10% off any item at best buy. If anyone else has these they will stack the coupons. Mine scanned right through along with the student discount taking an extra $75 making it $675!

    • Whit

Also I had a $10 for spending $100 offer in my ibotta to use too 🙂 some people may have higher I saw some people had $20 for spending $200 offers.

    • Lisa

deal is done 🙁 and the best buy where we live wouldn’t let me stack the post office 10% coupon and the college student $100 off…

OMG! Thank goodness I checked this site. Yesterday was the day my son was going to spend his graduation money to get his college computer (checks in the dorm Sunday). Best Buy was $100 cheaper than Apple so we were going today to get one. Thank you Collin for posting this. He will now save another $100 plus a $25 GC he received for graduation as well. WhooHoo! $724 is a great deal. Oh and FYI, my older son purchased a MacBook 17″ 2 years ago with graduation money and says its so much better than the Gateway we bought him when he was in 8th grade.

    • Daniel

      Why’s he getting another laptop?

      • Laura

        This was a different son

I just purchased my MacBook Air a couple weeks ago and I LOVE IIT!!! I got a great deal too, I purchased it from the Air Force Base= no tax and they price match best buy and if you opened a store card you got 10% off so I got mine for $750 no tax!
But as a college student I am constantly on my computer!! I am in a full time nursing program and ALL assignments are turned in online!

  17. Guest

I just got a Mac for graduation and I love it!!! My mom bought it for me and at best buy they told her if she had my student email she could save $100. She didn’t have mine but she called my cousin to see if she could use her student email and she said of course, and ended up saving her $100. It’s a great laptop, I absolutely love it!

My husband is starting grad school this fall and has had his MacBook Pro since 2009. With the exception of having to have the hard drive replaced last year, it has been perfect. We both use our machines pretty heavily, sometimes 6-7 hours per day. The battery life of MacBooks is amazing. I can use my computer without it being on the charger for 5 hours. We are, hands down, Mac people. The up front cost is more, but you’ll have less issues and won’t need to replace your machine, which makes it a better long-term investment. That being said, we’re getting one of the 13.3″ Airs and retiring my 2009 MacBook Pro. Should be able to clear it off and sell it and get at least $500 for it. BTW, they also have nice resale values. 🙂

Is anyone else having problems getting the email? I submitted it this morning, but still nothing. Thanks!

I got my MacBook in 2011 when I was attending grad school. My parents bought a dell laptop last year and they are already shopping for a new one. I think they hold their value fabulously.

  23. Gizelle

Where do I enter the email to get the code

    • Alyssa L.

At the top of the page – it’s a blue block, with step 1 being “ENTER YOUR .EDU ADDRESS.”

  24. Alicia Willie Barton-James

Thank you very much for sharing this excellent deal. My daughter who is attending college is very happy today. She got her Macbook Air 13″ for $749. Last year they were $999.99. This is an awesome deal. I don’t have to wait until Black Friday because this is an awesome deal. The reviews are great.

  25. Carla

Is the sale over? I clicked on the link and the 13″ is coming up as $899.99.
