SavingStar: 20% Cash Back on Avocados (+ Upcoming Changes for Kroger Stores & More in October)

SavingStar.com has just released a new offer good for 20% back (up to $2) on your loose Avocados Purchase valid through 9/22/2014. This offer is not valid at Giant Eagle, Big Y, Shurfine, Shursave, Kennie’s, Family Owned Markets, Thriftway, Shop n Bag or Stauffers of Kissel Hill stores. .

* Note that after you purchase the avocados, the 20% cash back will be deposited into your SavingStar account within 2-22 days depending on the store where you made your purchase; you will also receive an email when the savings post to your account. And remember, once you get $5 in your SavingStar account, you can transfer the savings to your bank, PayPal, or Amazon gift card.

And, if you are a Kroger shopper, be sure to make note of this upcoming change! Starting October 1st, Kroger will transition from an “automatic” (loyalty card) retailer and instead participate as a receipt-scanning retailer. This means that you will redeem SavingStar offers at Kroger stores by submitting a picture of your receipt, instead of linking SavingStar offers to your Kroger card. This change impacts all Kroger stores, including: Kroger, Dillons, Baker’s, Gerbes, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, JayC, King Soopers, City Market, PayLess, Owen’s, QFC, Ralphs, and Smith’s.

Do you shop at Safeway, Vons, Food 4 Less or H-E-B?! If so, also starting in October, you will be able to save even more with SavingStar! Yep, SavingStar just announced that you’ll be able to submit for offers at these stores. You’ll just need to take a picture of your receipt using the SavingStar mobile app.[/h2s_box]

Just one more reason (no more double coupons) why I rarely shop at Kroger anymore.

    • Laura

      Agreed!!!!

    • Anon

I think this is an improvement! Kroger is by far the worst about crediting Savingstar! I have had to contact customer service numerous times about missing rebates.

  2. Ben

I’m sure you meant “note of upcoming change” instead of “not of upcoming change”.

    • Collin (Mrs. Hip)

      Whoops…just updated!

  3. Tracy

Bummer about having to scan the receipt. It was so easy with the loyalty card that I usually bought all Saving star items at Kroger. I have a terrible time scanning with Saving Star. About half come back. I never have that trouble with Ibotta or Checkout51.

    • emma

I also have problems with scanning through the savingstar app. Will have to go through cvs mostly if possible.

    • Anon

I have lots of problems with my Kroger items crediting, so this will be a welcome change for me!

    • steph

I probably bought 90%+ of my savingstar items at Kroger. Now with this change it will hurt Kroger since I will not be buying nearly as much unless it is available at CVS. Not surprised at all about the change thou.

  4. Kathy

    That is annoying

  5. VANESSA

Oh dear, I don’t have a smart phone. I guess I lose out. Hopefully CVS doesn’t follow Kroger.

    • steph

Same here, you are not the only one.

    • DianeNC

You can still scan without a smartphone (I don’t have one either.) You just scan your receipt on a copier or printer (I have a small printer/copier/scanner at home), save it as whatever file type they’re requesting (probably .jpg or .pdf) and then just upload the file to them on their website. That’s how I’ve been using Checkout51 as well.

      • steph

But it says to take a picture of your receipt using the savingstar app. Where are you seeing a file type to upload it to?

      • Karen

Thanks, Diane, for this information. I thought I was going to have to stop using savingstar because I can’t justify buying a smartphone. I went to their website and saw this. I would have missed it if you hadn’t pointed it out. I’m going to look for Checkout51 also.

    • VANESSA

I just saw on their website you can just upload your receipt from your computer starting October 1st.

  6. TJ

That is a really annoying change. I am sad bc now I probably won’t be as likely to use it…

  7. LaDonna

I’m quite bummed by the change because I used SavingStar via Upromise which isn’t possible in the app that I know of. =(

  8. Stephanie

My android device isn’t compatible with Ibotta or Saving Star, and I have no idea why I have dual cameras and the minimum requirements. Do you have to G3 or G4 network because I’m Wi Fi only.

    • Karen

It might be that you have an older phone that cannot handle the latest updates for these apps. Contact them to find out. I use Wi-Fi also, but have a newer phone, and have no problems.

  9. gohogsgoinar

    This was from the website:

Other recently added retailers include: Walmart, Target, Kmart, BJ’s, Costco, Sam’s Club, Walgreens, Dollar General, Family Dollar, Meijer, and WinCo.

Has anyone tried to get a rebate from Dollar General, Walmart, etc?

  10. frannie

    I don’t have smart phone.

    • DianeNC

Hey, Frannie. You don’t have to have a smartphone. See my response above.

    • VANESSA

I just saw on their website you can just upload your receipt from your computer starting October 1st.

  11. Autumn

Stephanie, I have the same problem with my phone & was hoping someone could help me too. My Android phone isn’t compatible with Savingstar 😢Does anyone know what operating system it works with? Android Gingerbread, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean or Kit Kat? I wish I could use it to, I love shopping at Food4Less ☺ Does the Savingstar app work on Tablets?

    • Stephanie

I have a tablet with kit-kat. I have dual cameras. Checkout 51 works great.

  12. DianeNC

I didn’t see Harris Teeter listed as one of the stores we’ll now have to scan receipts for SavingStar – doesn’t Kroger now own Harris Teeter as well?

  13. Nicole

in the email it says through the savingstar app or savingstar.com so I’m hoping they will allow us to submit pictures of receipts online now since i do not own a smartphone

    • DianeNC

You don’t have to have a smartphone to scan receipts and upload them to Savingstar.com (or Checkout51). See my explanation above.

  14. VANESSA

I just saw on their website you can just upload your receipt from your computer starting October 1st.

    • lulie

I don’t even know how to upload a receipt on my computer:( Do I take a picture of the receipt with my digital camera? I don’t think it would even be readable. Would this work?

      • mel

Yes, you would take a picture or 2, depending on the length of the receipt with either your digital camera or smartphone. Make sure to mark the items first. I circle the date and use post it flags so I’m not marking all over my receipt b/c sometimes I use the same receipt for Savingstar, Ibotta, Checkout51 & Jingit!
Download the picture/s to your computer, save it to a file that will be easy to remember/find. Then you upload the photos to SS.
AFA it being readable, I think they can zoom in on their end, just try to take a clean picture that is not blury. Good thing about digital is that you can retake as many times as needed!

      • DianeNC

If you have a scanner or a copier or printer that scans, you just scan your receipt that way, save it as a .jpg or .pdf file (whichever Saving Star is asking for) and upload the image on their website.

(If you don’t have the equipment to do this, most FedEx Office locations have scanners.)

  15. Karen

I have redeed through Walmart with no problem.
