Target Coupon Policy Updates (Addressing Manufacturer’s Coupons w/ Other Store Logos + More)

Good news for Target shoppers! Target just recently updated their Coupon Policy to answer some questions that often arise when you are checking out with coupons!

First, Target has clearly addressed the issue of using a manufacturer’s coupon that contains another retailer’s logo and/or mention of another retailer (see examples above) – the policy now states that these are coupons ARE to be accepted at the register! Yay!

Another important clarification to note – the difference between “per purchase” and “per transaction.” Many coupons will state something like “limit one per purchase” in the fine print. As outlined below, this simply means that you can use one coupon per like item purchased. However, if the coupon fine print states “limit one per transaction”, then you would only be able to use one of this specific coupon per your entire transaction in the store.

To see Target’s updated Coupon Policy, head on over here.

(Thanks, Totally Target!)

This is great, hope the cashiers and managers are informed because they never seems to know what’s going on.

    • JA

      You are so right!

    • Diana

Yes! I hope they read it. I was just there yesterday and the cashier said i couldn’t use the people magazine q because it had walmart logo. Ughhhhhhhh… Another cashier told her it was ok so thank god.

      • kelly

i tried using the Hungry Jack syrup coupon that has a walmart logo & was told, first by the cashier, followed by a manager, that they couldn’t/wouldn’t accept it because walmart is the only store that gets reimbursed by the manufacturer. ugh!

      • ms coupon

the funny thing is if they just scan the darn coupon it would go through. I can’t seem to understand why cashiers and managers act as though the money is coming out of their pay checks!!

        • Tina

Some registers won’t ring up the coupon!! Walgreens and cvs registers do!! Thank god for the change!!

      • Meagan

I had the same problem but I went to cs and asked why it couldn’t be used and they said it could and rang up my items

      • Vanessa

same for me on the people magazine. I think the cashier pretended to scan the coupon just to satisfy me after I explained to her that it was a manufacturer coupon. I will be shopping at Target from now on with the coupon policy!

    • Your sister

      They won’t be informed.

  2. Noel

AWESOME!!! This is SO great Target has specifically addressed both of these issues. For me and my experiences shopping/couponing at Target the “per purchase/per transaction” clarification was definitely needed. Thanks for keeping us all informed Collin!!!

    • April

For sure. I literally spent 4 minutes (POLITELY) trying to explain this difference to a cashier yesterday at Target who didn’t want to take my coupons. Glad for the official clarification. 🙂

  3. Ash

I hope Now they understand the meaning of one per purchase and one per transaction!

  4. Nikki

What stores other than Target and Whole Foods allow you to combine both their store coupons and manufacturer coupons?

    • Michelle

cvs– coupons from mailers and the red machine

    • fran

      ShopRite

    • DianeNC

Harris Teeter allows customers to combine their e-VIC (electronic coupons you load to your frequent shopper card) with manufacturer coupons.

    • Joy

Price Chopper here in Northeast and BJs allow stacking of manufacturer and store coupons.

    • Mer

      Rite aid

    • Jennifer

Coborn’s in the upper Midwest, Walgreens

    • Jennifer

      Publix

    • Carol_R

      Walgreens

      • Maryann

My experience with Walgreens, has been you can only use as many coupons as you have items, regardless of what the coupons say, ex: 3 total items in order to use 3 coupons, 4 items 4 coupons.

        • Daisy

While that’s true, I don’t believe that the Walgreens store coupons apply to the overall coupon total.

        • Crescent City Couponer

That applies to Register Rewards/Savings Rewards only.

This is Walgreens’ policy on “Multiple Coupons”

The guidelines below are to be followed in addition to the General Guidelines listed above.

When purchasing a single item, Walgreens accepts one manufacturer coupon and applicable Walgreens coupon(s) for the purchase of a single item, unless prohibited by either coupon offer.

When purchasing multiple items, Walgreens accepts multiple coupons for multiple qualifying items, as long as there is sufficient stock to satisfy other customers, unless a limit is specified on the coupon. Management reserves the right to limit the quantity of items purchased and/or prohibit the purchase of excessive quantities. An excessive quantity is any quantity above and beyond normal household usage.

    • MARGOT

Raley’s and BelAir in California / Nevada

    • Preppy Pink Crocodile

Price Chopper and Shop Rite here in NY/the Northeast allow the stacking of store plus manufacturer coupons. Price Chopper also accepts competitor coupons so you can stack a manufacturer coupon plus say a Shop Rite coupon.

Walgreens, takes manufacturer coupon paired up with their Walgreen coupon booklet!!

    • mtnhoney

      Dollar general

  5. Rowen

Definitely printing this out and putting it with my cvs policy, since the cashiers never seem to know it…

  6. Susie

Off topic: I have two shutterfly codes for free 8×8 photobooks. They won’t apply to the 8×11 books so I don’t need them anymore. Feel free to use:
    HG63-86CR-Z9BG-HNWRBS
    KB2G-9G3B-EJX8-Y32RCJ
    Enjoy!

    • Tera

      Both were used

    • JW

Thanks, Susie. I tried both codes, but it looks like someone else got to them first. Very nice of you to post.

      • Oharra

If anyone wants a 8×8 free photo book email me I have one I won’t use!
        Cassidy_oharra@yahoo.com

        • Melissa

          Thanks!

  7. Vangie

I’m so excited! Can’t wait to go back to Target. I was staying away because I had such a negative experience on my last trip. I was frustrated, embarrassed and shocked that they kept insisting I could only “purchase” one item.

    • Melissa

I hear you, Vangie! I had such a humiliating and demoralizing experience on one of my shopping trips this summer that it took me two months before I returned, and then I was hesitant to even use coupons because of the bad treatment I received. Mind you, I wasn’t using very many to begin with. But the clerk didn’t know the meaning of “purchase” and would only allow me to use one coupon per shopping trip, treating me like I was a scammer trying to misuse the system.

      • Kelly A.

I’m glad to hear I wasn’t the only one. I had the same experience back before last Easter when I had my complicated shopping trip using those $10/$50 grocery purchase coupons. Just my luck, this manager decided that per purchase meant per transaction. I left all of my things there. I do shop at Target, just not as often and a lot more cautiously. I am so glad Target came through for the coupon shoppers on this one!

  8. Carol_R

Do you know if this means that they will accept Catalina manufacturer coupons are for a specific produtc that were printed at other retailers such as Walgreens or Rite Aid?

    • DianeNC

I’m going to guess yes, because although the source you got them through was the Catalina machine, if you look at them, they say “Manufacturer Coupon” right on them. I know my local Harris Teeter said that’s all that matters – even if the Catalina manufacturer coupon came from another store and has their logo on it.

    • rosana

My target has done it. Cvs is the one that wont take catalinas with other store named.

    • DadoftheDeal

I’ve done it at both Harris Teeter and Lowes foods. I was trying to figure out if that was the case at Target as well with the policy change. Maybe I’ll try next time I’m in.

  9. Plumaria

This is great. Now, I wish they could also clarify product doesn’t have to match coupon pix. For example: coupon states “$5 off any always pads 20 count or higher” they don’t see the, particular pad on picture so they won’t sell it even when it’s an “always pad” that has 32 count which is more than the “20” count min on the coupon

    • DianeNC

I agree, Plumaria. If the cashiers would just take a minute to think about it, they would realize how ridiculous that is to rely on the pic as opposed to the actual wording of the coupon – a perfect example is if a coupon is for “any” of a particular manufacturer’s product, they obviously can’t show a pic of their entire product line on the coupon, LOL.

  10. Pat

Yeah! Now if Kroger will do the same thing. Sometimes they will take the coupons that say walmart and sometimes they won’t. Depends on the manager on duty.

  11. DJB

    ! ! ! W O O H O O ! ! ! Finally!

  12. Nl

    Thanks for the update!

    • nicolegammeter

      You are welcome! 🙂

  13. Jessica

This is so exciting! I got into a really heated argument with a manager at Target about coupons from Cub and Walmart even though they specifically said “manufacturer coupons” and not their regular store coupons. I ended up giving up, noting which cashier I went to, and avoided that Target for awhile. Actually, any time I get grief from a cashier, I try to remember who it was and never go to them again. Teenagers are the best. 🙂 They don’t care about anything and will just override it. They’ll usually listen to me when I tell them why I’m right, too.

Thanks for sharing this awesome news, Collin!!

    • Sara

      Totally agree about teens!

      • Daisy

I always have the worst experiences with the teens. They always hold up the whole transaction while they find a manager to double check things.

        • Carm

I have the best luck with the young men. Older people typically seem to be set in their ways whenever a problem happens in my experience.

  14. Kathryn L Cazares

Target want our business. They just so not want us to use coupons! I do three or four transactions in one visit. Letting the people behind me wait. The cashiers can only handle it this way. I just have to be organized so it moves along quickly

    • Rochelle

My local Target will not let you break up transactions if you are using coupons.

    • Cassie

I do two to three transactions every time I got to Target, but not because of coupons. I use the envelope system for my budget, and my budget does not have a “Target” line item. Groceries, Medical, Clothing, Household… all those categories have separate envelopes.

  15. Torri

Does this mean they can take register rewards? I can’t remember if they state manufacturer coupons or not

    • Jane

Those say redeemable only at walgreens so sadly no:( I wish!

    • Suzyq

      Kroger takes register rewards

    • Suzyq

Actually they say manufacturer coupon and redeemable at wags not “only” redeemable at wags so I would say yes target should take them!!

      • mel

Suzyq, I had some RR’s and at the very bottom underneath where it said $1 compliments of XXXX, it said “Redeemable Only At Walgreens”. I think the RR’s that print out for purchasing items in their ad, print like that, so using those at Walgreens would be a no-gp. But national catalina RR deals, those I think print out just saying “Redeemable At Walgreens” and should be able to redeem at Target.

  16. Sabrina

I have had my battles with cashiers, as every couponer has, but they only do this because there are SO many people that take advantage of the system. The cashiers are threatened that they can lose their jobs over coupons and many of them are just younger people that don’t know the language like we do. I’m very excited to see this clearly stated on their website so us good couponers have some back up! Target does want our business, couponers or not, and this shows that they listen.

    • Carol_R

I agree and I don’t have a problem with a cashier scrutinizing my coupons. I do have an issue with them not knowing their own coupon policy, particularly if they’re long time employees.

  17. Ana

This is great, but it’s still going to depend on the manager, regardless. I like Target in general, but I’ve had a couple of really bad experiences with nasty managers who won’t listen to reason, no matter what.

    • Carol_R

I’d suggest that you complain to their corporate office.

  18. Melissa

Shutterfly free 8×8 book code DAHQ-0PAD-HSBF-U7H147 valid through 10/31/14.

    • Melissa

      Thanks Melissa!

  19. Kris

Awesome! Thanks Collin! Just this morning I tried to do the People magazine deal at Target and the cashier and manager would not take the MC because it states redeemable at Walmart. I will definitely be printing this to bring along. 🙂 Love Hip2Save!

  20. Molly

So what do you do when you hand over your coupons, they seem to all go through, but when you get home you notice one missing? For example, the latest beauty product deal at Target. The $10 off $35 didn’t come off.

    • Carol_R

I’ve gotten in the habit of checking my receipt before I leave the store.

      • Jessica

I used to notice those when I got home, too. Like Carol_R, I check before I leave the store. If something is missing, I go right up to Customer Service and tell them what it was – Cartwheel didn’t come off, coupon didn’t get rung up, etc. They’ll always fix it for me. They’ll usually just give me cash back. So, as much of a pain as it is, I recommend checking before you leave the store.

    • Brianna M

      Molly,
I had an incident similar to this yesterday. I bought 2 maternity tees, used the 40% off cartwheel and forgot the $5/25 target coupon. I went to customer service afterwards, thinking they would return it and repurchase it, but she didn’t have to do that. She just scanned the receipt and my coupon and gave me $5 back in cash. I hope that helps you.

  21. Mia

I never had problem to use coupons with any other logo on them at my favorite Target store ( and yes I drive 20 min. to go there and pass 3 other target store) but it’s good to have coupon policy printed on hand just for time that you may have problems . It is nice that they put these in coupon policy. Thanks Collin for let us know 🙂

  22. Jaime

FINALLY a company that is spelling out the difference between per purchase and per transaction!

  23. dana

What about the coupon doesn’t say 4 like coupons its unlimited. So if I have 10 target says their limit is still 4. Did the limit change at all? If I go to Walmart I can use all 10 like coupons at once

    • mel

That didn’t change as far as I know, it’s still a limit of 4.

    • Eunice

you can use more than 4 like coupons as long as the coupon has no wordings like “limit 4 like coupons per household per day.

  24. Molly

Thanks! I try my best to check it over before leaving the store. I normally have a 4 year old running off and a 2 year old trying to run off, screaming the entire time. I love couponing but my kids do not! Lol!

    • Tara

      I feel ya!

    • far

Hi Molly, I wanted to share with you what I do with my children (same age with yours): Have them get anything they like in the store, like if you will buy it for them, but tell the cashier that you will not buy them, and will return it at the end. And in the end of the transaction, they might cry when they realized it that the toy (or whatever it is) stays in the store, but it doesn’t matter, because you are done and going home. I hope this experience can help many moms who has similar situation.

      • suzie

Sounds like that might work for a while. . . but what about trust?
Bigger issues in the future. 🙁

        • Far

Never told them that you are going to buy it. Just say: “you can play with it for now..”

oops. reading too quickly. I guess you weren’t asking :).

  28. Sonia

Has anyone else experienced trying to buy those Gillette Fusion gift packs that have razor, shave gel, body wash, and deodorant and having a coupon for each item in the pack but Target only lets you use 1 coupon? Target policy does not mention this scenario but I don’t understand why they can’t accept one for each different item if there are legitimate coupons for each item. I would still owe money but could save as well. Same thing happened with the Covergirl Outlast nail polish that was packaged with the Gillete Venus Snap with Embrace razor and shave gel. I had 1 from Gilette for the razor and 1 from Covergirl for the polish. I could not use both! Frustrating.

    • Rebecca

Target is right. There is ONE barcode scanned so that classifies as ONE purchase. One coupon per purchase.

    • sarah

You are buying one item and trying to use more than one coupon….. no no. This is why there are rules

    • Eunice

if you’re buying gift packs, you can only use 1 MC regardless if there are different brands inside. They are being sold as one.

  29. Carol S.

Our Target is awesome. I’ve always been able to use a Manuf. coupon w/ another store’s logo.

  30. Regina

Good Luck. Cashiers, supervisors and managers are always ill-informed about the policy. I tried to get some of the great deals posted on this site. I was treated rudely and poorly at check out and unable to use coupons including Target store coupons. Happened more than once even after their 1-800 customer service apologized. So not shopping with Target anymore. Don’t have time to look for deals, gather coupons, make a trip to the store and shop then be hassled at checkout and not be able to check out.

  31. Inda

This still doesn’t address whether customers can use manufacturers coupons on items that Target offers gift card promotions (buy two, receive a $5 Target GC). I had a store manager tell me this week I couldn’t because of a “new store policy.” Still waiting to hear back from corporate customer service.

  32. Tanya bates

I called corporate and they were informed that they were wrong and I was correct in the same situation as the first coupon policy update! I was sick of their crap, so I called their HQ and embarrassed them!

  33. Nisi

color me ecstatic! this will help me out for sure!

  34. pat

Has the mobile Q changed? New policy states a mobile Q is considered a Target Q and only one Target Q is allowed.

    • mel

Correct. It doesn’t matter the source of the Target coupon (whether it’s a home mailer, a booklet handed out in the store, mobile, printable, insert), you can only use ONE of those plus a manuf coupon PER item. You can’t use a mobile + printable + insert on the -same- item, you’d have to pick which one you’d want to use. However, if you have 3 items, you could apply each sourced coupon per item, as well as stacking with 3 individual manuf coupons. Hope that makes sense!

  35. Vanessa

When it says it doesn’t accept manufacture rebate coupons are they referring to the similac checks?

  36. Becca

Now what about “limit one coupon or offer per guest” because that’s what the printable target coupons say and I have been told several times that means I can only use one coupon per day. Even though I called corporate and they said I was right because their website says they take 4 like target coupons per transaction and I was told I was right but it’s up to the store though. Ugh I really hate couponing at target!!

  37. MCouzens

Finally, common sense!!!!! Another reason why I love Target!

  38. Sam

NOOOOOOOOOOO. If the coupon says limit 4 then we can use 4. if the coupon says limit one they will not accept it. i already spoke to 2 of the district managers and unfortunately thats the case. So don’t waste you’re time trying to argue.

    • Brad

“Limit one coupon per purchase” means you may use one coupon per physical product being purchased. So if you purchased 4 products, you may use 4 coupons. The statement has been on coupons since the 1930’s and frankly needs to be changed to “One coupon per item purchased”. Proctor and Gamble coupons state “One coupon per purchase. Limit of 4 like coupons per transaction.”

  39. Brad

Now if EVERY retailer could update their policies to clarify the “One coupon per purchase” statement on coupons. There are SO MANY cashiers and managers who think that this statement means that you can only use one coupon for your ENTIRE shopping trip/transaction. It really is upsetting when you have to explain to them that it means one per item and even then they don’t always believe you…

  40. l

Just had a very bad experience.
What do you do when the manager doesn’t know their own store policy??
Even though I was very polite, she refused to believe that the store policy I had was indeed, Target’s.
In the past, I have just put up with whatever (cancelled the transaction or just paid anyway) with a smile on my face. But, as my life has become a lot more busy lately, I don’t have time to go back to the store later. Why can’t they just train their employees??? And, a manager, above all, should be very informed of coupon policies and how to read a coupon – this is tantamount to their position.

  41. Josie

At least where I am, all of the Target employees know this, including sales floor team members who are just up due to long lines. If somebody gives you trouble, they’re doing it wrong: honestly, Target is one of THE BEST places to stack savings. I love that I can stack a manufacturer coupon, Target coupon, and a Cartwheel savings on any single item. Loving it!

  42. Cassandane

I need to print this new policy out. I just left a NE Ohio Target where the manager said this new policy doesn’t apply. Why I asked? Because on my iPhone the website that shows up when I am looking at the new policy is “help.target.com” and the manager said that is not the same as “target.com”. -_- basically she was told by mgmt that help.target.com is made up by bloggers and extreme couponers so we can circumvent the actual coupon policy, despite the fact that help.target.com shows up anytime you search Target’s searchbar….

  43. jacq

So where in this debate do the $$ OYNO Catalinas fall? Even when they state manufacturer coupon. I take that to mean the manufacturer is offering the price cut to reward the store for selling certain items by having the customer return to THAT store only to use it. Even though it doesn’t say “only” on it.
