I bought the Swap Force starter pack for my kids and it’s put up for Christmas. That being said and since I know absolutely nothing about this game, I’ve heard there are certain ‘types’ of these characters that are needed to unlock different parts of the game to continue playing. Can anyone verify this for me and maybe state their preference for character types…this is a great deal I don’t want to pass up but can’t afford a whole bunch of these either. TIA
You can look up each individual character to see if it works for yours. We have swap force which is pretty universal with a lot of the characters. We have 24 different characters and only 4 don’t work with ours. The good thing is my kids still like to play with the characters without the game.
The characters that actually swap are the characters that unlock the special levels. These characters will still play the game and there may be some places they can unlock but the swapping ones get you into the bigger levels.
This link helped me out to determine which ones I needed to buy to unlock everything

Hope that helps.
Sophie, your link was a LIFESAVER! Thank you!
This is true… I was frustrated because my son would make it to a level and couldn’t move past it without a special figure.
I bought some on ebay for a lot less than in the store and he loved it because somehow the skylander figure will “keep” all the upgrades from previous games so they had “extra powers”, this helped him move along the game faster and accumulate more “coins” for the ones he already had. Hope it makes sense. π
Wow!!! I never considered that benefit of buying them from ebay, but how clever! I bought several of these after reading this post, but they didn’t have Trigger Happy, which is the one my son specified that he wanted, so I bought it for $10 from the Microsoft store and it was free shipping. Phew…this game is pricey though. So far, I think I have about $250 tied up in it…more than I payed for the xbox 360!!!!!!!!!!! haha!
Funny what we’ll spend our money on for the kids. I have a hard time allowing myself to spend $10 on a pair of jeans for myself though.
I thank all of you so very much! So very helpful. I obviously can’t ask my children since it will be a gift for them. π
^^^ thanks for all the comments. I didnt realize you had to keep buying additional figurines to unlock levels. I was going to give the starter pack as a gift to my nephew, but sounds like this game may cost them extra $$$ to keep playing. Will be returning it!
Your nephew can enjoy the game with just the characters it comes with you don’t have to buy more to play.
Not sure what starter pack you purchased but if it is Swap Force, one positive thing is that the characters will probably become cheaper and cheaper as the new one enters homes this holiday season, as it will be considered the “old” version. lol. We have swap force and it makes for a good incentive for my son to work towards earning new characters through chores, good deeds, etc.
Oh good! Great for Christmas
My son LOVES Skylanders…grabbing a few for his birthday or Christmas. Now just hoping I can get a good deal on the new Trap Team version!!! π
