Happy Friday: Homemade Thanksgiving Craft

My kids and I went on a nature walk this morning and gathered a few items for this fun, easy, and frugal Thanksgiving craft. The only thing I had to buy was the feathers (about $1.25 at AC Moore after coupon). I got the google eyes on clearance from Target’s one spot, we had glue, and the felt beak and wattle were small scraps remaining from other projects. My eight year old made the understated, more traditional one on the left and my three year old made the flashy one on the right. What I liked about it was that it was great for both ages (which isn’t always the case!) and that it can so easily be modified based on what you have.
To make these, I hot glued acorns to the top of the large end of the pine cone. You might want to glue some “feet” or some sort of a base if your pine cone wants to roll once the head is attached. I hot glued the wattles and beaks, and my kids stuck on the eyes and glued on feathers. My son also came up with a great idea for gluing the feathers: dip the ends of the feathers into a small container (we used a miniature Play-Doh canister) of school glue rather than using the applicator, which is messy. Super easy and fun!

Picked up a pinecone for a project one time and found a nice big spider in it. So we no longer pick up pinecones for projects. Beware!
