Can anyone tell me briefly how you would etch glass with something like this?

    • Jennifer

You basically make a stencil of whatever image you want to etch and then you fill in the image with etching cream. There are thousands of images you can choose from in the silhouette online store or you can use any font already on your computer to etch things like quotes, names or monograms.

    • Robin

You would cut adhesive backed vinyl to attach to the glass and use either an etching cream or an etching spray.

  2. Tracy

I have a silhoutte and I love it!! I can do anything and everything with it! Got it off of the deal last year.

    • Xuan

Hi Tracy, i’ve always been interested in one but since its a bit of an investment, i haven’t bought one yet. Do you have the portrait or cameo? Can anyone else attest to what they think of these machines? Would love some feedback. Thanks!!

      • cbeths

I have a cricut that I purchased years ago before i knew much about the Silhouette. This is the one you want to buy, not the cricut. But, for my purposes… the cricut works just fine, and I paid about half this cost ($160.) I hear these have many less problems (clean cutting, precise depth, etc) than the Cricut also. I do have a two year old, so the advantage of my cricut is that I can just pop in cartridge and cut, you don’t have to do much searching for what you want to cut and no computer needed. But, that means limited images since you must buy cartridges. (I think you can hook the Cricut up to the comptuer too…but I haven’t done that.)

      • Julia

I received a Cameo from my mom last year for xmas and I absolutely LOVE it, there is so much you can do with it like cutting heat transfer vinyl to put on clothing, vinyl to decorate xmas ornaments or make PVPP signs, you can cut card stock, you can use it to make sentcils. The options are really endless. If you are crafty I highly recommend this!

      • sarah

I have the portrait. I like the compact size for storage. At times I have wished I went ahead and purchased the cameo but I have only thought that on one or two projects out of hundreds. I love mine.

      • Kimberly

I bought the Portrait last year and I have used the heck out of it. 🙂 I’ve used it for everything from making cards to creating cutouts for my bulletin boards. Something to note is that the Portrait’s maximum cutting width is 8 1/2 inches wide. For this reason alone I wish I had sprung for the Cameo. It cuts widths up to 12 inches wide.

Also, I have to say, their Customer Service is EXCELLENT.

      • Becky

I love my Cameo. Got it last year for Christmas. Had a Cricut before that and they don’t even compare.

  3. Heather

I’ve had a cricut and silhouette machine. I love the silhouette, will never go back to cricut! Very easy to use and does an excellent job!

  4. Katie

    I LOVE my silhouette!!

  5. Jennifer

I have both a circuit and silhouette cameo, hands down the cameo is the superior machine. I use it almost daily, many times just to use the software to design and print things (ie – labels, invites, subway art, holiday decor, etc). The software and the machine are very user friendly.

  6. Caitlin

We LOVE ours. We have used it to make ornaments, and now my husband builds guitar effects pedals and uses his own hand drawn designs to create stencils for his products using this machine. It is a very good investment. You can use it to cut so many things, even cake fondant and scrapbooking items. Definitely worth the price, at least for us!

  7. Brittany

I have a Cameo and love it! I’ve made car decals, party decor, labels, tags, iron ons for clothes, etc

  8. Jenni B

I want to purchase one, but the free shipping excludes any of the deals you’ve highlighted. Do you have another promo code that will work for free shipping? The Hip2Save gives the 40% discount, but not I’m still being charge $17 for shipping. Thanks!

    • Jenni B

I just tried to order again and this time using the Hip2Save code gave me free shipping! SCORE! Thanks 🙂

      • nicolegammeter

        Yay! 🙂

  9. diane

hmmm I`m not getting free shipping once i enter my zip code. i dont think the hip2save promo is any better than their black promo…

  10. Rae

I had the cricut used it twice and hated the limitations. I kept catching my self going back to just using x-acto knives and cutting my own designs. My sister wanted it and I mailed it to her… It never made it past the sorting facility. Thank goodness for putting insurance on packages. But I did not get the insurance amount as the USPS is also in the business of assessing value of your items based on when initially purchased. -_- So thankful for this sale because now I can send my sister a better product for the money I got from the claim!

  11. Lynndee

Just purchased one but the shipping is not free. Mine was $24.58.

    • nicolegammeter

Did you enter the code HIP2SAVE at checkout?

      • Lynndee

Yes I did. Dropped the price from over $200 to $119 but when I went to checkout and added my shipping address it added the shipping charges. I will send them an email and see if they can remove the shipping charges. Thanks for the deal! I’ve been wanting one of these 🙂

  12. Nikki

I am not getting free shipping either. Tried calling their customer service line and got a recording to leave a message. I also emailed them. Hopefully they will get back to me so I am not getting charged shipping.

    • Lynndee

I went ahead and made my order but I’m hoping that maybe they will refund the shipping. Still a good deal considering they are $109 on amazon for the one I ordered and that doesn’t include the $25 card.

    • nicolegammeter

Did you use code HIP2SAVE at checkout?

  13. Becky

LOVE my cameo!!! It’s been worth every penny. Got mine with a good bundled price on Amazon last year. It’s been indespensible for my husbands custom lighthouse business, as hand painting the lettering added a good 3 hours to each one. Working on personalized tumblers as we speak as teachers, and children’s gifts. Haven’t tried using it for etching glass yet, but already have the etching cream and its part of my to-do list prior to Xmas. Most things we do with it require no purchases from the silhouette store, as nearly any image can be created yourself.

  14. ELISA

I just placede my order and did not get charged shipping. i also had a warning on the security saying it was not 100% safe but i continued anyway. i ordered the holiday bundle that was $119. now i am nervous that it was a phony payment window. it also said due to high demand at holiday time order may be delayed, and it also said not to contact costumer service for two weeks due to high volume. did anyone else get these messages and i am suspicious because of the free shipping, that no one else received?

  15. joannemart

I’ve never heard of this system. Hubby just bought me the latest circuit for Xmas so I haven’t tried it yet, but now I’m wondering if per has this is the way to go. So many of you seem to like this system better. What to do, what to do?!!

  16. Dee

For those who say they own both Cricut and Silhouette, do you own the new Cricut Explorer? They seem very similar. I bought the Explorer on Black Friday for $149 at Menards. It also included a bundle. It’s still in the box, so wondering if I should look into Silhouette. I currently own a Cricut Expression and enjoy it.

    • Rae

There are websites that compare them and other brands side by side. Cricut if I remember right have a wider range of materials that they can cut but not by much and it wasn’t enough to change my mind. Silhouette cutters allow you to use ANY image you already own rights to… Like fonts that are already on your computer or even something you draw up your self cricut limit you to their images only. Silhouette needs a computer to run most cricuts can run independently with a cartridge. Once upon a time there was a third party software company that had made s program that allowed you to use the cricut like you can use the silhouette and import your own images but povocraft threatened law suit and made them pull the program. That was like three years ago RIGHT after I purchased my explorer and I was so irritated I didn’t get to purchase the program and not have to buy loads of the cats to use it… So it was only used twice.

      • Letty

You can use any image on the Explorer too. You just have to upload it. I use a lot of Google images

        • Rae

If the explorer can do that and you got it for 150 then it’s probably a good deal and honestly it would probably do just what you want it to OP.

I meant I had the expression I had the original. I wouldn’t go back to povocraft though even if they changed the programming. They do a lot of things that I don’t think are good business, they secure profit sure but it’s not consumer friendly. After three years of customers dumping them because of cutting off the third party software they came out with their own version that only works with the new machine. Another big complaint, though this may have changed since I last looked in to it was once a cart was registered to an account it couldn’t be transferred to anyone else’s account it could only be used by a second hand user directly on the machine. But I understand they have pretty much moved away from actual carts in favor of downloads right? If you like it and it works for you great! I had one and was less than happy with it but I like my silhouette portrait a lot. It’s all in what you need it for and what you prefer.

  17. Caitlynn Martinez- McWhorter

I’ve wanted one of these for years and this was the first time I’ve seen it in my price range! Thanks, Collin!

For those of you with cricuts or silhouettes, where do you buy your vinyl/transfer paper/etc? I know the michaels, hobby lobby, and joann coupons always exclude the cricut and silhouette brands in the fine print, and most of the time they sell just the brand names at those stores. Does anyone have a good place to buy off-brand vinyl and such in semi-bulk quantities for cheap? Thanks! I’m so excited to try out my new Silhouette!

    • Rae

It’s usually just the machines that are excluded from the coupons. At least that’s how it used to be because I purchased the vinyl with 40%q at Joann’s before.

  18. Elizabeth M.

$149 is one heck of a deal!!! Wish I had a Menards. I have an Expression and want to upgrade.
