We got rid of cable and purchased a Roku 2 months ago. So far we love it and the money we are saving is awesome! We have 4 children and they don’t even miss cable 😄

  2. Danielle

We have the Roku 3….love it! My 6 and 4 year olds can use it better than me! 🙂

  3. Shanshan

My fav is to watch youtube on it. You can pair Roku with your pc, and do a youtube search on what clips you wanna watch, even making a playlist, then have it played instantly on you TV through Roku.

Yeah I plan to cancel my cable service after Christmas, coz my fav channel TLC is not worth watching anymore.

  4. Felicia

Love, love, LOVE our Roku. Took me 2 yrs to convince hubby to kick cable to the curb and invest in this box. Ended up bring it home and said, “THIS is my birthday gift!” He loves it just as much as me.

Side note, you can now get the same apps in the newer Blu-ray DVD players, snagged one for daughters Christmas on Black Friday for half off – $49!!

  5. Vanessa

So do you need to have wifi or internet access to use it?

    • Jennifer

Yes, you need internet access. We have WiFi for our Roku; but I know others just plug an ethernet cable into the Roku and that sometimes makes streaming even better.

  6. Mona C

How do you use this? I just signed up for directv and installation will be on 12/11. All I want from cable is AMC for the Walking Dead. Can I watch it here?

    Thanks in advance!

    • Jennifer

In general, you can’t watch the current season of a show that is on air right now on the Roku; but in a lot of cases you can watch previous seasons. Here’s a link about how to watch the Walking Dead if you don’t have cable… https://www.tomsguide.com/us/where-watch-walking-dead-online,news-17723.html but all of them you would have to pay for.

We had DirecTv for over 10 years and just got rid of it a couple of months ago, and now have the Roku 3. We love it!! But, I do understand if you have to watch your favorite show as it airs 🙂

      • Jennifer

In terms of how you use it… it gives you access to some free “channels” that you can watch shows for free on (for example, PBS Kids, so my kids can watch Sesame Street, Thomas, any PBS Kids show for free). Also, your paid subscriptions will go through your Roku. You can access Pandora and YouTube on it as well. We have Amazon Prime and Netflix; other people also have Hulu Plus. Before we got the Roku, we accessed Amazon instant video and Netflix through our Blu-Ray player. My husband said it’d be a lot better/faster with the Roku. I was skeptical and didn’t really want to spend the money… but, I have to say that it is MUCH faster and better!! I love it and recommend it to anyone. And, I love not paying DirecTv every month. 🙂

        • Mona C

Thanks so much for the feedback!!!

    • Queenjen87

All the previous seasons are on netflix. I think you can watch the whole episode the next day on their website. But I have not confirmed. My dh and 1 lived quite happily without cable for 8 years … Staying with my mom new for her health reasons and she won’t drop cable, so we have it now. But still, we don’t really need it. Kinda nice to watch the alabama games on a big tv instead of front row sports tho 🙂

    • Amy

Get the PlayOn channel on the Roku and watch The Walking Dead for free, on demand

    • andrea

Can you watch the sports channels such as espn, or BBC America?

      • Lauren

You have to have a cable or satellite subscription to watch ESPN or know somehow who’ll give you their sign-on info. Their are subscription sports channels for NBA, NFL, etc. I don’t think BBC is available, but there is an Acorn TV channel that has a cheap monthly subscription fee (I think $3.99) and those are British shows.

      • thriftyamy

You can watch ANY sport – LIVE – if you get the Roku Channel called PlayOn, which has hundreds of subchannels, one of them is called VipBox2 – that channel broadcasts all sports – I watch the Cleveland Indians all summer, on my TV through that. No extra cost!

  7. ihearthip

Oh yeah I refuse to give cable tv my money!

  8. CO Mama

Amazing value for your money! We’ve had ours for a year and love it, super user friendly, nothing bad to say about it. Getting one for my parents this year, going to save them $1400/yr when they cancel their cable bill!!

  9. Lisa

Can you watch any local sports on it? Specifically we watch hockey and is pretty much the only reason we keep Comcast.

    • Jennifer

Sports is a problem :(. We got an antenna so we can watch football on the network channels…but my husband misses his college basketball, hockey, etc. He says there are ways around it and paid subscriptions you can add, but in general sports is the biggest reason we didn’t cancel cable a LONG time ago.

      • Amy

All you need is the PlayOn channel on the Roku and the app Vipbox2. That gives you all the live sports

        • Dana

Hi Amy- do I download Vipbox2 to my Roku or computer?

          • thriftyamy

            To your Roku

          • thriftyamy

Go to PlayOnscripts dot com and then click sports and then scroll a couple of pages, in alphabetical order, to see VipBox2

It’s 80$ at RadioShack right now with 2months free hulu plus & 3 months (I think) of rdio. Plus sign up to RadioShack for their emails & receive a 10$/25$ Q that brings this to 70$!

    • mona c

where does it say about the 2 months free hulu?

      • Liz

When you purchase any “new condition” or “factory refurnished” Roku device including the 1,2,3 and the stick, you will automatically get 2 month of Hulu Plus for free, just remember to cancel it before the deadline so you don’t get charge afterwards (only in case you don’t want to continue with Hulu). When you set up a Roku, it will ask you to set up an account online (to set up and personalize your channels, set up payment method – you only get charge if you purchase or rent a movie through them directly) , then you will get an email from Roku with a description of how to sign up for the free Hulu Plus thing. HTH!

We live having a Roku. My DH wont get off the cable kick but we have it only on his tv and min. The 3 year okd nows how to work it to find stuff to watch on netflix which is $8 a month and we have Hulu Plus for the same. Also Drama fever ( shhhh). If you get the $5 off codes that Target been printing on catalinas then the Target app has movies to rent. They have vudu app that you xan use to put Digital codes. If you have freinds or family that buy blu rays with digital, ask for the codes!!! If they arnt going to use yhem that is (one time deal on those codes). I have gotten many new released movies free from family after they bought and fave me their code they dont want. Which you can watch any time like you own it. On the different apps that is. Or if you buy the blu rays put the code it and have the apps for others to chose movies to watch, not just on the bly rat player!!

  12. Chrissy

Oh dear lord i cant spell. Ladies and gents i am so sorry! Hope you understood all that!!!^^^^^^

  13. Chrissy

And omg! If you loose the remote an have a smart phone. There is an app for the phone to control the Roku!! Free! After paying $25 to replace a lost remote…… Grrr

  14. carnini31

love our roku 3, we use it all the time for netflix, amazon prime videos, and sooo many streaming stations. We especially like that we did not have to look for a smart tv for these types of apps when we recently replaced our TV, that was a huge savings too.

  15. Pat A

If you search with bing you can earn enough points to get Hulu plus for free! That’s what we use with our roku box…love no cable bill!!

    • Jenny

      Thank you. Great idea!

  16. lisab

Does anyone know if you can watch amazon prime streaming movies through the roku?

    • Ashley

Lisab, yes. Amazon is a channel you can add to your Roku. I watch Amazon prime TV/Movies all the time.

  17. lisab

I am not sure the difference in the amazon fire tv and the roku 3. If anyone can help, thanks!!

  18. Viv

Is their a difference between the Roku 1 and Roku 3? Thanks

    • thriftyamy

processor speeds – go to roku.com for comparison chart

    • carnini31

roku 3 is way faster then the roku 1, as other person mentioned, see the roku site

  19. susie

We have one Roku HD and love it, But because My husband likes History and Military, Speed Channel, It’s anyone know what we could do to drop the Comcast and still get these channel?

    • thriftyamy

join the fb group The Little Black Box of Tricks – that’s where you’ll learn how to get the most out of Roku – i have been a cord cutter for over a year – i watch any show i want that is aired on regular tv/pay tv/and premium channels – ALL FOR FREE – there’s lots of military channels and all the shows on the History Channel/Military Channel, etc can be found through the Roku channel 1Channel via Playon.

      • susie

Thanks for your reply, We’ll try that.

  20. Fla_gen

I love food network. Is that available thru roku?

  21. Ebony

I have a roku and I don’t understand how to get the most out of it, it’s actually costing me more because I have to pay $8 for netflix, $8 for Hulu and still can’t see my favorite shows so I’m still paying for cable. Netflix has the same darn movies for like months, I have other apps but have to pay $5 to watch movies.
Also can you watch local news channels at all? I would probably still have to pay for internet like $49 a month plus basic cable so it’s still like $90 a month without a dvr.
What am I missing I’m still not seeing how to actually save money with it.

    • thriftyamy

you are missing out on everything – join the facebook group The Little Black Box of Tricks – you’ll learn lots – get the Roku private channel called PlayOn once you get this channel it opens up literally thousands of new channels, one of them is called 1Channel – this channel gives you every TV show ever made up to current day – and they can all be watched on demand – no extra cost for these channels – don’t waste your money on hulu or amazon, all those movies/shows are on 1Channel…we only pay for wwe network and netflix – my tv bill is $18/mo

  22. Pinki

Is this the lowest price you have seen for Roku 3? How often does it go on sale?

    • carnini31

rarely is it on sale, it is a good price.
