HELP/QUESTION: Will Target Stores price match a Target•Com item that is OUT OF STOCK? …
I was just in-store and was told “no?” Which honestly I don’t get at all!!! Because I can immediately place an order online for in-store pick up at the very store I was shopping at and get the price I want? I was caught off guard and honestly, although it didn’t make sense I was not familiar with their Price Match Policy. So, when I came home I did some research. I found the Price Match Guarantee: the details says “Competitor online items must be in stock at the time price match is requested.” See how it only states “competitor” … There is nothing anywhere saying a Target•Com item must be in stock for an in-store Price Match. Confused I called the same store’s Guest Services and was told the same thing above^. I explained I couldn’t locate anything in their policy reflecting the “in stock” requirement. I was on the line for awhile, but I heard the associate speaking to two individuals and he returned saying he was sorry for the wait, but he spoke with the Manager and it does have to be “IN STOCK!” Am I crazy? Or missing something? Has anyone else encountered this before?
(The item is the Hot Wheels Super Loop Chase Race Track: online $24.99 vs. in-store $29.99 and currently B1G150%Off. And the reason I did not place an order online for in-store pick up was because I had two MQ’s and the Target 20% Coupon [which I was also using on other items I was purchasing]. The additional savings would have been $7.50! That’s a lot.)
I recently price matched to Amazon, and the associate told me (several times!) that price match items must be in stock (my item was–so I’m not sure why she felt the need to emphasize this!). This summer, I considered price matching to Target.com for a gift card item, and I was told that if I price matched the item, I would not get the GC. Likewise, they do not allow Cartwheel to be used in combination with price matches, so your deal wouldn’t work for that reason. Basically, with a price match, the only other discount you will get is a manufacturer coupon. They won’t let you stack any additional store discounts.
I was told that the product has to be in-stock online (whether it’s target.com or competitor) for them to PM.

Erin, Target will let you use CW/Target Q’s, but ONLY if the PM is still more than the in-house discounts. Like if something is $19.99 at a competitor, but $21.99 at Target and you have a $4 Target coupon. Well, using the Target coupon drops the price to $17.99, which is now less than the competitor, so no PM. But if the price is $25.99, the $4 coupon drops it to $21.99. They will then PM to $19.99 , giving you a $2 refund.
I’ve seen people post that they got the PM value, then used a Target coupon/CW, but that is incorrect.
And I know this is how it’s stated in their policy, but Target’s logic on price matching this way makes no sense to me. If they are going to price match the competitors $19.99 price anyway (which they will), why would I even bother taking the target coupon in, in the first place? It defeats the purpose of using a Target coupon at all if you are price matching, because someone can walk in there right after me without a target coupon and they’ll be able to price match and get the same $19.99 price as me! Am I the only one who thinks like this?
From Target’s standpoint it makes sense: they’ll PM a lower price but they’re not going to give you an additional store discount as well, which would be a better-than-price-match price (barring mfg coupons, which are reimbursed).
No, you’re not! I agree. What’s the point of having a Target Coupon if the price reduction results in what other retailers are selling it for on sale? There’s not really one. Unless the Target Coupon reduces it lower then what another retailer is selling it for. All those years of math are finally paying off. LOL! ! Definitely an odd science.
And I understand Erin’s point about not using the Target Coupon “on top of” the price reduction, because it would typically result in a great savings … Which they don’t want to happen (lose money).
I guess in short, since Target has their own coupons, this is how they found a way to address “stacking” discounts. If you look at a retailer like WalMart’s Price Match, it’s simple … Price Match (if in stock;) and use a Manufacturer Coupon. With Target’s additional Coupons/Cartwheel, it’s a bit wonky.
Their PM policy was more lenient a few years ago. The reason they changed it is b/c there was a super hot deal on some toy (that I honestly don’t remember what it was). It was on sale at Toys r us crazy cheap. Of course, Target had a printable store coupon for said item. Once it got posted online, it blew up and everyone everywhere was PM AND using the Target store coupon and getting it for like nothing! Target lost a lot of $$ on that item. So they eventually changed the PM policy. I guess they want to PM to stay in competition with other retailers, not undercut it by giving additional discounts.
Erin and Mel you’re definitely right about the Target Coupon/Price Match Policy! Something I honestly didn’t take into consideration. And my Target Coupon for 20%Off would have reduced the $29.99 to $23.99, while the Target.Com price was $24.99. (This may very well be why the cost was reduced online, as that 20%Coupon was only valid in-store?) So, they would not have price matched in this scenario, had the item been in stock.
But, my issue is really the “in stock” requirement for Target.Com merchandise! I just don’t comprehend it! If an item is Out of Stock online at any retailer, a lot of times people will check in-store. But, with Target.Com you have the option of trying to purchase the same deal by locating it at a store near you for pick-up. If you do, the store gets the sale and the stock is depleted. But, if I walk in looking for the same item and ask to Price Match it to their online price, why wouldn’t they? It just seems counter productive to allow me to make the purchase via online, but not in-store. My 2¢.
