Thanks to ObamaCare, breast pumps are now free…er, at least paid for by tax payers. 🙂

    • Deb

not for all. my insurance did not, even with a script. Some insurances are grandfathered in and don’t have to provide one.

      • Sarah

same here. i feel your pain.

    • Liz

Most of us are Taxpayers so its fine…people who dont have kids pay for public schools too(no thanks to Obamacare) but i dont c u ppl saying anything about that…thats how it works in a civil society…we all stand up for each other !!!

      • Cindi

I don’t think she was meaning anything by it, more like correcting herself by saying they’re free. Nothing is ever really free, obviously all government programs have a cost.

      • meg

Why get so huffy about it? She didn’t get smart.

    • Cindi

Yes, but my hospital provided me with a different brand that works nowhere near as well as medela. Since I have milk supply issues it just made sense to buy one anyway! This little pump is great to express on side while you nurse the other, which really helps to get more mik since you are having a natural letdown.

Anyone have any opinions on this pump. I know the electric is better but this price seems like a good deal.

    • Jessica

I had this one and I actually preferred it over the electric pump. Less hassle and it worked really well.

    • GG

I’m on month 11 of pumping. I gave up my electric months ago and greatly prefer manuals. I prefer the freedom of pumping wherever, they are quieter, lighter, and you can control the pressure better. If you can afford it, try it out! I’ve tried pretty much all the manuals, I prefer Lansinoh’s (older model), but there’s nothing wrong with Medela’s.

    • Elizabeth

I have this pump! Compared to other hand pumps this one really gets it all! I love it!

    • Molly

most insurance companys will cover atleast part of a pump, I would check with them before paying full price!

      • TL

It has to be medically necessary, is what my insurance said. For example, baby in nicu unable to nurse.

        • Sara

Most insurances don’t require medical necessity, mine (Anthem BCBS) didn’t even require a script. I just had to call them and was able get a free electric one with storage bottles, etc

    • Tygre

I have this pump and love it. I used my electric for the majority, but this whenever I was out and about or working. I actually got more milk with this than my electric.

    • tam childers

13 mths pumping i ditched my eletric an only used this. Got twice the milk in half the time. Love it.

    • LadyO

I had this pump and used it regularly for nearly {gulp!} 3 years, for my son. Loved it! I had an electric one, but I found it to be cumbersome and hard to travel with. This one is lightweight and easy to use, once you get used to it. Extra bottles, if still sold separately, are very useful to have on hand, if you plan to BF more than short-term.

    • Tonia

I love mine! I have owned a few over the last 10 years as a mom of 4 breastfed kiddos (currently nursing my 6 month old) and I prefer to use it over my Medela double electric. Less hassle, less pain and personally, my body responds much better so I get more output 🙂

  3. Jessica

Seems like a good price to have one u can easily take with you on the go if your away from your baby and not able to use your electric pump

    • Renee

A hand held pump would take forever. It something you can bring with you to relieve pressure.

  4. Anna

I love this pump!!I wish I got it on sale bc I bought 2 so that I can save time on washing. Have one wash and one ready to use. It is super convenient to bring this out when I am away from home and baby. Electric might be faster but electric is louder and a lot more to wash in my opinion. Even at home, I use this manual pump when my baby is napping near me. I do recommend getting the Pumping Pals shields to pair with this pump. You will get more output with those shields and also less nipple pain. Hope this helps.

  5. Katrina

I’m sure it depends on milk production, breast shape and a zillion other factors…but I always hand expressed milk, with no pump. It worked better for me. The pumps (I tried a few different ones) just didn’t work as well and were painful for me. Just my two experience.

    • Katrina

      Two cents and experience lol

  6. jess

My hospital gave these free when you delivered your baby. Call and ask to speak with lactation specialist.

    • Maria

Lucky…my hospital gave the tubing to the pump, but not the actual pump itself.

    • jan

Are you sure you got it free? Check your hospital bill. I know they charged me for tucks pads, tylenol, breast cool soothers, and everything 🙂 maybe it’s just my hospital 🙂

  7. Tiffany

I have this pump. Loved it! But they give them to you at the hospitals where i am. I got one when i had both my boys. 3 years apart and 2 different hospitals. Niagara county

  8. Shabnam

I have 2 of these and i love it. Very easy to use, have one at my bedside for early mornings. Much better than the $279 electric one hubby got me.

  9. Shannon

If you plan on working full time and pumping three times while away from baby, you’ll get better return with a double electric pump which came be made hands free with a pumping bustier. Allows for pumping without much downtime from work if you can shut own office door. Electric pumps are a must for daily pumping but manual pumps are great for one the go and occasional pumping.

    • Lin

Agree. I bought the Medela yellow electric hospital grade on craigslist for $400. It worked really well. I had the Medela manual for travel (TSA did not like the electric pump! I always had to pull up online ads/ photos to convince them! I did not pack it onto checked luggage as almost everything that can be broken breaks for me in checked luggage)

  10. Jessie

I’ve had four children and used this pump with the younger two. Loved it! No problems at all.

  11. Mama

Works better than the electric at expressing milk! I would feed on one side and pump the other side at the same time to help supply issues!

    • Cristine

That worked great for me as well! A little trick I has to learn;-)

  12. Carolyn

Perfect timing I was needing one and I still have my registry completion coupon for Amazon. Thanks from new second time mom! And great manual pump especially if I just need a little pumping to be comfortable instead of the whole Big Bang of the electric

  13. marlene

Im enrolled in the wic program here in southern cali riverside county and wic offers an electric medela pump strictly for breastfeeding workings/school moms that done get formula. They also have manual pumps available. I pump every day so i use mine and love it

Great pump! Better than my eletric one.

  16. Nikita

If anyone is interested, I have a brand new in the box electric breastpump. Email me at nikitaorchard@yahoo.com

  17. Sarah

This is the same pump that WIC will give to breast feeding participants, at least in Utah. If you are eligible for WIC then I would check there before buying one, every state has the program.

  18. Cristine

I got one of these free from my local WIC office with my first child. It works great! I used it with my second as well and it’s still like new.

  19. jan

I found it hard to manual pump. I had this one and sold it. My hand cramped up and very little milk. My babies never used bottles and i am a SAHM so it wasn’t a necessity. I’m getting a electric with my next baby through insurance. Maybe the next one will take a bottle 🙂

  20. Jen

FYI you can price match at Buy Buy Baby or Babies R Us i fyou don’t want to pay for shipping. You can’t combine a price match with a store coupon, however.

I own this pump as well as an Ameda double electric; I got the Ameda (free) through my insurance and bought this one for ~$30 last year. I bought the manual in case of emergencies- for example, I travel a lot with work and twice had my batteries die and nowhere to plug in the electric pump. This didn’t get all the milk out like the electric, but it got me out of a jam. It is also way smaller and for occasions where I didn’t need to get milk out to store/feed the baby, but rather to just relieve the milk build up, this little guy worked great.

Also, if you have an HSA or FSA through an employer, pumps and all/most breast feeding accessories qualify- I got lanolin, special breast ice packs, storage bags, etc. using my FSA funds.

  21. Amy

Can anyone compare it to the Ameda manual pump? I think that’s the brand my hospital gave me. It’s teal in color. Thanks.

  22. Mom Of 2

FYI there is a coupon for an additional $5.00 off in store!! I snagged this pump this evening for $20.99. I also have a medela double electric pump but it can be a pain so I just wanted something a little more handy. I already sterilized it and tried it out and I’m impressed that in just 12 minutes it did about the same as my electric. A little more work of course to pump myself but I found it more comfortable.

If you go for this deal in store please note it was regular price at my target but they price matched it at customer service and then took the $5.00 off coupon after the price match!
