(I am not trying to offend Collin and her crew with this comment. I am tremendously grateful for all they do, as they’ve saved me a great deal of money.)

Before you lay out money on a pump, remember that the Affordable Care Act (AKA “Obamacare”) requires insurance companies to cover breast pumps, but only certain models. Also, if you are on WIC, you are eligible for a pump, too, but again, only certain models.

I have WONDERFUL insurance and when I called to see what pumps were covered, I was told a “single, hand held manual pump” was all that would be covered. Not an option for a working mother with a 3 year old and a newborn! Don’t have time to do 1 side at a time AND manually! come on! Don’t get your hopes up!

I have pretty bad insurance, but I can get a Madela double electric pump fully covered- so it is always worth checking!

        • Adrienne

          Yes – definitely check!!!

      • Deb

        Adrienne,
I am an OB nurse and none of the women at my hospital have had your experience. But, as with any situation, YMMV!

        • Deb

So, all of this caused me to go to the ACA website. Apparently, some insurance companies are not required to offer breast pumps, although these are not in the majority. Also, the feds do not specify which pumps insurance companies must cover. I guess the women I’ve cared for all had coverage that provided for hospital-grade electric pumps. I agree with Adrienne that a hand pump is impractical for a working mother (or anyone, IMHO!).

          • Rae

Not a working mom but for my needs the hand pump was perfect. I mostly nursed my lo but when I had a chance to pump extra I did. Made it easier to let daddy watch them while i ran errands and he couldn’t use the excuse that he couldn’t feed the baby haha. I know a lot of women have a hard time with the hand held though and that made me hesitant to buy it but I had no issue with it! My insurance was one that was not obligated to cover one but the pump was under $30 so I didn’t have to difficult of a time to budget it in.

My insurance isn’t that great but they offered a free breast pump. I called medical equipment stores to find out what I qualify for and certain brands were covered and several models.

I want to add many many ladies have medella double pump in styles for sale in perfect condition because they didn’t end up breastfeeding for long.

Most are selling for $50 and it’s not easy!

Just but new tubing and the parts that touch you. People use used bottle all the time.

        Sterilize!

Also, people rent pumps. But a used ameda or medella.

PS… I’ve nursed 4 and do until 18 Mo. I’m also working on be coming a lactation consultant.

        • Deb

You need to be careful buying a used pump. Some models actually may let milk get into the machine and cannot ever be properly sterilized, even with using a new attachment set. Ameda pumps are a closed system and do not have that issue.

    • Stephannie Kotalik

Yes, you are right. Under “Obama care” breast pumps are covered but not all insurance plans are willing to pay for a high quality pump. Also, WIC provides a pump to nursing mother’s but NOT all nursing mother’s meet the criteria for an electric pump. I have been a dietitian for the WIC Program for the past 23 years and many Mom’s think they should get a pump and also get some formula for their babies and this is not typically the case.

I had this brand of breast pump with my first child – it was terrible and I wouldn’t recommend it. It died within a couple months and the company was no help in trying to fix it/replace parts. After it died I bought a Medela brand. I started getting twice as much milk when I pumped, my blocked ducts went away immediately, AND it lasted a whole year!
I don’t recall which specific type of pump it was – but the brand was Breastflow and it looked very similar to this one.
    BEWARE hip2savers!

I had this brand of pump with my first child as well. I used it for over a year and never had a single problem. In fact, I saved it and will be using it with my second as well!

    • Susanne

I agree Adrienne, I used this pump with my son & it only lasted a couple months with (using once a day three days a week) then the motor died. The company does have good customer service & sent a new one, but I still was able to pump more milk with a Madela manual pump than this one.

Definitely check with your insurance! I was able to get a $300 pump at no cost!

  6. Er0131

I agree with all of you guys to check with your insurance before buying a breast pump. I have the Medela one that my insurance provided free and it works great.

When you get your prescription from your doc just ask them to make it for a double electric pump. When I called they wanted to give me a single manual, but when I read them the script they were able to give me the electric. Might not work for all companies, but it would pay to ask them to add that wording!

Also pharmacies, some hospitals & med supply places rent the high end pumps (no milk or breasts touch the rented equipment & personally I think it worked WAY better then the lower end models, esp if u have any supply issues). WIC paid for mine for 6mo but the cost varied greatly from $1/day to $50/week, maybe u cld haggle the price? Just a thought.

If ur baby is compromised in any way, ie preemie, jaundice, heart or lung problem etc (3 of mine had problems @ birth) raise a stink & demand the hospital supply u a loaner! Esp if ur baby is going to be in the NICU. I’m shocked how often they just send home a hand pump. That is not going to get supply up enough for a newborn! Ok I can go on & on I’m a lil passionate about this lol

Breast pumps and accessories all qualify without a RX for flex spending accounts.

It all depends on the insurance company. I called about getting a free pump and was told I had to wait till my daughter was born meaning I would not have the pump at the hospital like I wanted. After birth I would have 30 days to get one. I was also told I had to purchase it from one of the medical supply vendors the insurance company approved . I had this one on my registry already so I said forget the insurance and ended up buying it at Target. It is a great pump and is easy to use with lots of useful accessories.

I had a wonderful experience with these bottles! My baby boy had no issues with them. I always got extra bottles on sale from Kohls!

  12. Katy

I’m using this exact pump right now 😉 Love multi-tasking! I had a different model that stopped working and the company not only replaced it, but upgraded to this one! It wasn’t a hassle at all. They overnighted it to me too because my baby refused to latch. Also the bottles – my baby wouldn’t nurse no matter what. I used the breastflow bottles and he started nursing about a week or two larer. Coincidence? 🙂
