We have used one box since it was on sale over a year ago. That is with a family of 7. It works great, but make sure to put it in the water, not directly on the cloths. I just start my water, as I make sure nothing is in pockets and undo the socks. By that time the water has dissolved the powder and it cleans great. I have just about used my box, so I will be getting another. I also use only about 2/3 of what they recommend for a load, so it is even less than .05 cents a load.

I have been using this product for about 9 years now.. Get it at Sears once a year and it last me for about 9 or so months..depending on my laundry loads.. I have a front load washer/dryer.. Whirlpool Duet actually..and it’s the best detergent I have used.. It is compared to Tide to me. I read that in Consumer Reports many years back and gave it a try

This is my favorite detergent! We have a front loader and like with any detergent, be sure NOT to use too much. I do have problems with the detergent not dissolving in a cold water wash, but I have found it works great when I wash on warm or on hot.

(Thanks, Jessa!)

For the front loaders do you put the detergent in the drum with the clothes?

    • Holly

My front loader has a section for the powder detergent. I believe you have to take out the section for liquid detergent. At least in mine.

Thanks so much! I had $7.22 in points available that I didn’t even know about so I got it for $6.71 shipped to store! YEAH!

      You are so welcome! 😀

My HE washer is a top-loader and I can’t be sure the powder would dissolve in the dispenser. Hate to buy a big box & not be able to use it!

Same here. Great deal but afraid it won’t work right

I have an HE top loader and have been using this detergent for almost 3 years! And always buy it when it’s on sale to keep a stock just in case! I’m so glad I saw this since I’m to the last 3-4 loads left of detergent! Also I have never had an issue with the soap not dissolving in the dispenser! I wash my kids clothe for school in cold water and never have had any issues! I love this detergent!

        Thanks for the info!

For those that don’t want to use it as a powder or say that it doesn’t dissolve fully in cold water, why not use an old measuring cup to dissolve it in some warm water and then put that into the dispenser. It’ll still mix with the rest of the water as it would if you dissolved it naturally AND one or two cups of warm water won’t kill your cold water wash.

    • Annie

Great suggestion. When I tried to dissolve the powder in the cold water in my washer, it left permanent spots on the bath towels I was washing.

I love it. Nice, light and clean scent. I have a front loader. I put in the powder detergent section and it works fine! Buying another box! Lasts forever! I only use about 2/3 of a scoop and it cleans my family of 5 clothes extremely well.

Please everyone make your own my family who does 11 load a week. 2 year old me and a husband whos a lobster man and has to change 3 plus times a day for reasons i do not know and understand but it costs about $15 to make ours just cheese grate 1 Bar of ivory or phelsnapa in laundry section 1 cup of borax and 1 cup of super washing soda. Works amazing smells and feel and washes better than even tide. I have an he new washer and dryer the lg ones and use 1tbl for mine and my daughters and 1.5 to 2 depending on how bad his clothes are. Not available at my store and & $22.00 shipping!!

I’ve been told that for powdered soap, you can just put it in the drum with the clothes in an HE machine.

Does our bill go up if we use hot water to wash instead of cold water?

    • Emily

Technically, yes, but only because you’re using the hot water heater to deliver hot water to the unit. I don’t notice any difference in my electric bill. I use warm water for towels/sheets, hot water for whites and cool water for colors.

    • maflies1

You would be paying to heat the water, gas or electric I would presume. Hope that answers your question.

I have gotten this deal before (thanks to you and your awesome site!!). I definitely don’t recommend that soap. It does not clean well at all :-/

  11. Janice

Question for Amanda – do you just mix up the 1 ivory soap – 1 cup of washing soda and 1 cup of borax at a time? How much can you make for the $15 you mentioned?
    Thanks
