Sent from reader, Janelle:

I used a mini photo album to help my daughter create her own mini coupon “binder”. She gets first dibs on coupons and loves cutting coupons for gum and other treats. Sometimes I give her a couple bucks and allow her to choose a lunchbox snack for the week.

It has gotten her more excited to go couponing with mom! She gets a treat and I’m teaching her to spend money wisely. Everyone wins! Especially when she shares her gum with me!

HAPPY FRIDAY! 😀

I need advice on how to organize my coupons. What do yall use? Pictures or advice? Mine are a big mess right now. 😳

    • Kerryiu

I used to clip all the coupons from inserts but then i noticed i was only using 50-60% of them, then I had to discard them. Now i keep all my Qs separated by dates in a jumbo box file folder & clip only what I find from H2S.

    • Suzyq

Agreed I do what kerryiu does because I was spending soooo mich time cutting coupons just to end up throwing them away. I sort inserts by date and then have a handful of zip envelopes for my pro tables that I know I will use

    • Nikole

I have an app on my phone called my coupon keeper you simply scan the bar code and it puts in all the information for the coupon then in the notes section I put a number. I have a little black index card box from Walmart with index cards in it with numbered tabs at the top. I put the numbered coups In the corresponding tabs for easy access anywhere. If your looking for a coup search it in the app and it tells you exactly where to find it in sec. I love my system and it works great for me.

      • Lindsay

I’m over the binder system. It’s to time consuming. I haven’t used it in over a year. I’ve just been printing the high value coupons and using them. Your system seems more practical.

        • Heather C.

Me too, Lindsay! I just don’t have the time for my binder anymore. 🙁

      • Karen229

I couldn’t find that app for iPhone. What kind of app is it?

        • Nikole

Its called “my coupon keeper” I have an android idk if it is on iPhone

          • doris

thanks Nikole!!! Going to give this a try!

      • Kim M.

I LOVE this idea! Just a couple questions… Once you scan your coupon, how do you redeem it? Are you giving the cashier your phone to scan the coupon upc on your phone? How do you upload an entire coupon insert? Last question, can you scan muti coupon inserts? Because I get like 4 Sunday newspapers. Thank you for your help in advance.

    • Stacey

I use this little coupon purse that I got from Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005DRQYKK/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It works better for me than a big binder since I’m on the go a lot and never know when I’ll have a few minutes to pop into the store or print off some coupons wherever I’m at. Since it’s so small and compact, I can always keep it stashed in my bag. Plus, it’s less clunky to dash into the store – and it just looks like a little clutch purse so I’ve never felt silly having it with me.

It’s canvas material with a Velcro closure so it holds up to my tossing it about. I made up my own dividers that fit the way I shop, only print out high value coupons or coupons for products that our family regularly uses, and spend a few minutes at the beginning of the month tossing expired coupons. An added bonus is that it clips to the basket of the cart to keep it out of my way when I’m shopping.

I love this little guy! I’ve had it for nearly a year now, and it’s still it great shape. (I got the green one – the color of money!)

    • Cari

That is a great idea! Thanks for sharing, I think my daughter would like to do something like this too ;).

    • rae

I ditched the binder almost two years ago and plan my shopping trips around what coupons I have. We also changed what we eat and what chemicals we use in home about a year ago so that made how many coupons I actually used from newspapers minimal. I think that app that was mentioned above would be super handy if I were still using a lot of coupons. I just keep what I print or cut out to use of I happen to get a paper, in my wallet.

      • RB

I keep the coupons IN THE CAR. Same with the ExtraBucks.
(Entire inserts in a tote bag in the bag seat or trunk works fine.)
Previously there were too many times I was at the store and saw something on clearance and knew I’d seen a coupon recently but didn’t have the coupon. I don’t have a smartphone, so it was time-consuming to search manually (i.e. without a coupon database)– so I started to do like my Mom and write on the cover of the insert the main coupon inside for products that I was likely to want to get & use coupon, especially the high-dollar ones.

        • RB

I mean “back” seat. Also meant to mention that I, too, switched from cutting out the coupons in advance that I might need/use after I began using the grocery coupon match-up on Southern Savers (for Publix and Harris Teeter) directing me to which date the coupons ran in the newspaper (which meant it was quicker to leave the inserts whole than to file the coupons by category and than to search through and taking time both for cutting and eventually having to go through them to discard expired ones).

  30. jac

This is such a great idea. I especially love that you give her first dibs on the coupons–what a privilege that must feel like for her, and how important she must feel! I think it’s awesome to instill this sense of being fully a member of your “team” by giving her a little power to make decisions, instead of simply being required to endure Mom’s shopping b/c she’s the kid and Mom’s the boss. I applaud you for having such a forward-thinking approach to parenting. I’m sure it will pay off as she matures and begins to make even more decisions for herself!

  31. Sara

Adorable girlie! My little lady loves to coupon with me too. She is only 3 so we do not have a binder yet but I see one in her future.

  32. Sandy

Great Job Janelle! I am from Minnesota and recognize the Cub ad and even the little wallet your daughter has. My daughter has the same one…crazy. Anyhow, I feel like I must know you. My kids ask me for gum and candy coupons all the time now.

  33. Shelby

Precious!! She is adorable, and lucky to have such a great mama to teach her so well. Excellent choice, Collin!

  34. Happymama

Such a cute picture and idea! Love it!

Off topic, but I didn’t know Cub Foods was still around! Do they still have the red crayons up front? I was just telling my husband a story about the huge snow piles at our former Cub Foods when I was a kid. These plies of snow remind me of the winters we used to get in Ohio….feeling a little nostalgic. 🙂

  35. Rebecca

She’s adorable and your idea is a great one! I’m going to try that with my daughter! Thanks for sharing, Collin!

  36. Heidi

Very cute and what a fantastic way to teach your daughter about the value of money. Way to go mom!

  37. RB

I like your activity idea, Janelle. It’s a clever way to enlist her assistance and instill practical, frugal habits while motivating her to -want- to be involved.
