I’m new to the Starbucks app can someone tell me how to earn more stars. Do we have to have a gift card loaded to the account? Any extra details to know about?
You get points toward stars when you buy drinks. When you reach certain levels you get freebies like free flavor shots and unlimited refills on coffee and tea. Free drink on your b-day. They will send you updates on promotions. P.S. It’s addictive and you will end up drinking more than you wanted. Any gift card can be registered through the app and you can reload the money on it in $5 increments at the store or online with paypal.
You get a star for each transaction, not for each purchase. Because I’m so frugal, I often make separate transactions. You get to your freebies faster that way. Often you will get emails with bonus star offers enticing you to try something different or to patronize A different SB restaurant or at a different time of the day. HTH!!
Katherine, if you use the app to pay (which, I think, requires you to have a gift card registered to the account), you’ll get a star for each individual purchase you make.
One strategy you should consider is to purchase each item separately, in order to get a star for each purchase. In my case, this means that when my hubby & I go on a starbucks date, we each pay separately.
Sometimes you’ll get bonus offers, and they seem to vary widely from one customer to another. I’ve had offers for 2 bonus stars with the purchase of an espresso drink, 10 bonus stars for accumulating any three stars over a certain time period, 4 bonus stars with the purchase of a particular breakfast sandwich or muffin, etc.
Another thing to be aware of: sometimes you’ll find offers loaded to your app; sometimes they won’t show up there, but you’ll find offers in your account when you log on to the desktop site; and sometimes you’ll receive email offers. These might be a coupon for a BOGO or discounted (or even free!) offer, or an offer for bonus stars as mentioned above. In my experience, each type of offer will appear only in one place; I keep a list in my wallet (on a post-it stuck to my registered card) to remind me of offers and expiration dates. I’ve been known to log in to my account online, only to discover a great offer that came and went before I knew about it.
Also watch for promotions throughout the year, but especially near the end of the year, for discounted re-loads of gift cards. For example, pay with an AmEx card and get back $X when you spend $Y at Starbucks or starbucks.com. Or get 20% cash back when you pay with a different particular credit card. Or load $X onto a gift card, and Starbucks will add a $Y bonus to your account. It’s nice to know that the $5 overindulgence I’m drinking really only cost me a fraction of that amount, especially when I am able to combine promotional offers. 🙂
Enjoy!
Wow thanks for the information I didn’t have a clue either! Do we have to pay for the drinks from the app gift card or can we pay cash and still earn stars toward purchases?
You pay with the app OR your registered SB card. It’s the only way to get stars. If you have cash, just ask the barista to load it to your card before paying. I have teens, and if they want to go to SB after school, they will pay me cash, I will give them my card and I get the stars for their drinks ☺️. I still have my phone on me with the app so we can be in different cities & be using the same “registered card!”
Question- I registered my Starbucks card and have been refilling the amount on it. Last time I went to Starbucks I used the balance and the employee never gave me back my card- I did not notice. Can I get a new card and keep the points I had on my old card or do I need to start new?
If you registered your card, on the website, you can report it as lost and they will mail you the amount it has in the card.
You can add lots of cards to your account and they all count towards your rewards. My DD6 got $30 in Starbucks for her birthday and I added them to my account so I get a star each time she gets a kids hot cocoa!
you can link it to another card if you had it registered.
Also, any stars you earned are still associated with your Starbucks rewards account, and not with a particular card. So you still have those stars even if you used up the card & left it behind. Probably the easiest solution is to “unregister” that card & remove it from your acct (use the online site or app to do that). Then just get a new card and register it before using.
Everyone else covered it, but how frustrating! Hope you’re able to recover the $ through the means mentioned.
I just read again and see you used the balance, so I guess I hope you’re able to easily link in a new card. I lost my favorite card once but it still shows up in my app because it’s registered 🙂
