I love this seat. I’m able to keep my tall kids rear facing as long as possible. I own 2 of them. Plus they fit rear facing in my mazda 3.

May I ask how old are the kids? Seems that the room for the legs is very small when rear facing for 2yo.

      • Mamax2

They just bend their legs or cris cross. There is a FB group called “Car seats for the littles” they have a lot of info about extended rear facing 🙂

      • Ashley

We stopped rear facing at 11 months (recommended is 12 months). Our boy is so tall, his legs wouldn’t fit!! I couldn’t imagine him rear facing until he was 2!! He’s 3 now.

Actually the law is 12 months, recommended is 2 years old. My 9th percentile for height boy was rear facing until 2.5 and perfectly comfortable.

          • rachael

            That’s 99th not 9th, autocorrect fail haha

          • maggiegt

Which car seat are you using for the 2.5 yo boy? No need to bend his legs?

        • Megan

Recommended is not 12 months. Recommended is at 2 years minimum, and until beyond that it’s recommended to keep rearfacing until your kid reaches either the height or weight limit of rear facing in their seat. There are seats on the market now that can rearface ALL kids at least past age 4. And their leg room doesn’t matter. They just sit criss cross or with legs over the side of the seat.

I’m sorry but for a long car ride I can’t imagine my little one having to sit cross legged the entire ride. I believe it was 12 months and then recently was changed to 2 years. My little one is also 90th percentile for height and she was extremely uncomfortable rear facing so we switched her at a year

            • Megan

No 12 month old should have to sit cross legged in a rear facing convertible seat to fit. You should check out the Car Seats For the Littles website and Facebook page. There’s tons of pictures of kids up to and beyond age 4 that are completely comfortable rearfacing in their seats with plenty of room. Legroom obviously varies from seat to seat, but there are tons of seat options for extended rearfacing that didn’t exist a couple years ago and work very well for taller, heavier, and older children.

My daughter is almost 3 and is still rear facing, and yes.. on long distance travel. My 2nd was turned around at 3. He has been off the charts for height since infancy due to a genetic overgrowth syndrome. There are literally seats for every size kid on the market right now, designed to rear face to a minimum of 2 years of age.

Leg room does vary seat to seat, but they simply cross their legs. I never had a complaint from DS2 about leg comfort until he was facing forward. He tells me all the time his legs are asleep just dangling there.

All this aside, the spines of small children aren’t well developed to support their head and neck in a crash.

How do you get 10yrs of use when carseats expire after 6?

    • Nicole

Carseat don’t expire at the same time across the board. Each maker has a different standard. Graco is now ten years.

      • Whitley

Thank you! I’ve been holding out on buying this because I was wondering about the expiration.

        • M

Convertible seats expire differently than others, the back of the seat expires after 6 years while the base of the seat (used as a booster when the back is detached) is good for 10 years. The expiration for each part is imprinted on the bottom of the seat.

    • Victoria

      that’s the same thing I was thinking…

  3. Christine

I imagine safety requirements will change over time as well.

This seat is deep and my daughter who is 95% can stretch her legs out and doesn’t have to bend them unless she wants to. She is completely happy rear-facing. We sing songs and play games. The seat is comfortable and she never complains.
I always say a broken leg is better than a broken neck so rear facing until 4yrs old is best when the spine is mature enough to handle a crash when seated forward facing.
